19 Houston Tres Leches Cakes to Add to Your Bucket List

"Horno Monterrey Bakery serves a variety of Mexican cakes and pastries, but the tres leches is a local favorite for birthdays, holidays, and other celebrations. Check out flavors like mocha and pineapple-loaded piña colada." - Lane Gillespie, Sean Hekmat

This place has the best Tres Leches cake in the world! Bar none. For a special treat, put it in the freezer for an hour before eating. Oh, heaven on earth!

My wife got an awesome tres leches cake for me for my birthday from Horno Monterrey Bakery! I loved it! It was so delicious. She said that the service at the bakery was great too! I am so glad she got it for me! I can’t wait to get something from there again!

Google
Stay away from this bakery! Today “Dia de los Muertos” went to buy some Pan de Muerto and they had the worst Pan de Muerto I’ve ever had, expensive and worst quality than Walmart bakery! They were burned and taste was completely bland tasted like just any other sweet bread, it had barely any sugar on top, even the decoration was off! Note that the owners of this bakery are not Mexican, how can they sell authentic Mexican bread? 👎

The lady on the front is always mad and yelling to everyone. Even though they have bad customer skills I would come back just because of their cakes, however I found a hair on my tres leches cake and I had to throw it away. Not coming back.

Google
Had to find a last minute chocolate cake, this place was the only one opened on Easter Sunday. The cake we got was so delicious!!!! It legit tasted like a Mexican Gansito!!!! Chocolate covered chocolate filling with Strawberry marmalade and a whipped cream like filling. Will definitely be back for more!!! Customer service was meh! Lady was rude and seemed in a hurry to get us out. Older man was courteous and at least greeted us.

Google
26 yrs found this wonderful bakery tres leches great and love all special Sunday cake

Google
I came in to buy a tree leches cake for my brother’s birthday cake was very good and affordable. Definitely coming back to buy more

Google
The people are rude the service is not great. I asked a question and all the lady said was if I read the paper and I told her I can’t read in Spanish and all she said was “oh that’s sad” never coming back here again.

Yelp
Tres Leches never disappoints! So light and delicious! The owner is super nice. Also bought concha's and they were soft and tasty.

Yelp
my family are regulars at this bakery and it's our go to for birthday cakes. we tend to get the tres leches cake but the square shaped one. sometimes they're out of the square and we have to get the round cake , but the issue is the round tres leches cake is always dry in multiple spots. the square one is consistently soaked so it's very disappointing that a differently shaped cake is so different texture wise. other than that, i really enjoy their conchas and bolillos. the staff seem a bit rude at times but i'm just there for bread im not there to have a conversation, so i personally don't really care. if customer service is important to you though, it could be a problem.

Yelp
The "Magdalenas" here are amazing. They have a great assortment of baked goods! The owner is super friendly.

Yelp
Located in shabby parking lot, the outside just says "Bakery". Inside, it's clean, and the lights are off. Why are the light off? Are they trying to save money on electricity? I don't know.... I got two items- tres leches and an apple turn over. Trec leches was extremely dry! HEB does a much better job and I would just go there. The Apple turn over was descent. It wasn't crazy sweet how you find apple turn overs at American bakeries. The lady behind the counter was friendly. I came in, got my stuff, I paid and left. Doubt I would ever go back.

Yelp
No maches que ridículo. Ponen horas que supuestamente están abiertos, llegas y ESTÁ CERRADO!!!!!!!!!!!! Y ya an echo esto varias veces casi nunca están abiertos

Yelp
Fresh and tasty treats! We were so excited to come by and grab a cake. They had such a nice variety. Everything we ordered was delicious. The woman behind the counter was so sweet and helpful. She explained everything that they had when we had questions and made great recommendations. We decided on a tres leches cake, but of course got some ice cream for the road. I wish we also got a cookies and cream cake, they looked awesome! We will be back for sure and grab some conchas and other treats.

Yelp
Still one of my fave spots to hit locally. Tres leche cake is the best I've had. Empanadas are excellent. Cookies are delicious. Breads are also wonderful. Prices are SO reasonable, too. You can walk out with a full bag of goodies to eat and not spend over $5. Great customer service and consistently delectable baked goods. A true treat!

Yelp
The first time we went (back in 2017) we were not impressed with the selection. Went back again this year and will be my go to for pan dulce! Their pan dulce tastes just like the one I used to have growing up from the panadero. What's even better is their cakes. We bought a tres leches cake last minute, and they were able to add a special message on the cake. It is definitely one of the best tres leches cakes I've had.

Ruth A.

Yelp
El pastel tres leches está bueno en sabor pero siempre está seco siempre que compramos siempre está seco y l a señora que está ahí siempre está molesta como que se enoja porque uno va a comprar si no les gusta trabajar no valla oh retírese .

Yelp
There's a few things I do when I first get home to Texas. This includes buying Julio's Tortilla Chips, eating tex-mex, and getting some Shipley's Donuts. This time I added a Mexican bakery search. Horno Mexican Bakery popped up in my Yelping, and was about 15 minutes away. Really, I'm going for churros, no lie. I ventured over as soon as possible, about 11 AM on a Friday and there were still many options at the bakery. As others have said, the outside sign only says "Bakery" but the window sticker has the name. Inside, you walk in and see the cases of breads and pastries. There is a stack of platters and tongs, and I just grabbed one of each and started loading up. The grand total for my ~10 items was $6. Damn, I should have loaded more! Especially the churros. My only complaint may be that some of the filled items weren't quite filled enough. I also wish they had a few different flavors of churros. No doubt I will be back next time I'm in Houston.

Yelp
Good pastries at reasonable prices. I have to write 80 characters so I am extending this review with nonsense.

Yelp
I use to live locally and this was always my favorite bakery for a Tres Leches cake. For New Year's 2023, i got had a family member to pick one up for me. It was such a disappointment. I think they forgot to soak the cake with the full amount of milks as it was soooo dry.

Bee V.

Yelp
Tres leches cakes are the bomb.com there's always some available, super moist, and delicious flavor but not too sweet. They are perfect ! Service is always fast.

Yelp
We were really looking forward to trying this bakery based on some of the reviews. I guess we had very high expectations that were not met. The bread is ok, pastry was well baked and tasted good but fillings of the different pastries were not that good in our opinion. Another issue was the lack of variety, we expected more kinds of Mexican sweet bread. Their tres leches cake was not to our liking, we much prefer Alma's or El Bolillo.

Yelp
Fantastic Tres Leches cake and super friendly. Clean. New to the area, but I will definitely come back and try more of their tasty looking treats.

Yelp
I walked in here expecting to taste the best tres leches of my life, but unfortunately the cake did not measure up to my expectations. The other reviewers made it sound divine! Instead, when my family and I all had a bite of the tres leches, we all found it dry and lacking sweetness. It wasn't quite desserty enough and trust me, we've had plenty of good tres leches before. The lady behind the counter wasn't friendly either-- in fact, she was quite rude! We tried to make small talk while asking her about the tres leches and waiting for some of my family members to pick out their pan dulce, and she just seem so annoyed to have us there. Sorry that we are interested in purchasing some pastries? :/ The conchas were tasty. My grandmother's concha was a bit stale, but mine was soft and fresh. They weren't too sweet, which I appreciate. My brother's churro wasn't so good though. It was too hard for him to chew, so sadly, we had to dispose of it when we left the bakery. Overall, this place seems overrated. I might come back for conchas and to try some other pan dulces. They had some guava and mango empanadas that looked delicious! Hopefully someone nicer is working behind the counter that day....

Yelp
My family and boyfriend love the cakes here. I always pick one up for a special occasion. They are always tasty and fairly priced!

Yelp
Love all the pastries here! I love coming here in the mornings and picking up a vast array of sweet breads. Their tres leches is also on point as well! Employees are always nice and greet me with a smile. Sweet breads are even still good after a few days after rewarming them. I usually walk out with a box of pastries and never spend of $10. Prices are dirt cheap and quality is top notch. Best steal in the Klein area for some good authentic Mexican pastries.

Yelp
This bakery is awesome! I used to come to buy my grandmother sweet breads etc at first... However everything is so fresh that I've started to come for my home as well. One word of advice I will give, is to come early.. I typically come first thing in the morning because if I wait until the evening everything is gone ... Well I'm exaggerating a bit but a solid portion is and I haven't had a chance to try their cakes and pies but I'm sure I will soon they look really good. Oh and by the way it is a traditional Mexican style bakery and As you can see I think it's a really great one.

Yelp
I came to this bakery for a birthday cake(tres leches), and everyone was right, it's delicious! I was also pleased with the price. The baker stated their pineapple tres leches is their best seller, but they were out. I will make sure to order it for the next family birthday. Also, I tried their pan dulce and the taste was on point.
google avatar

Lisa B.

Yelp
Def the best tres leches in the area and a cake is only $14.99!! The quinitos were on point! I wasn't a fan of the empanadas bc I felt they needed more filling so I'll just stick with the quinitos! Going to order a cake of tres leches for my birthday! They also have cuatro milks which I'm curious about!!

Yelp
I love this place!!! Ever since I was a little girl my parents have been getting their tres leches cakes here for our special events. I would give this place. 5/5 but their customer service is horrible. I went in on Saturday to get a tres leches cake, the women behind the counter was washing dishes. So I was standing there waiting for help for a good 2 minutes while she washed dishes in the back. She finally acknowledged me and proceeded to say "what do you need" very rudely. I was like "I would like the last tres leches cake" .......... likkkke I came in here for a cake, what do you think I needed? She's very rude, which is unfortunate because I'm pretty sure it drives a lot of customers away. This wasn't the first time I encountered her and all three times, she was very rude, as if it bothered her that I came in for business. Won't be coming here again, which sucks cause their cakes are so good. And we've been customers at this bakery since I was 7.

Yelp
I came across this sweet little bakery by accident and I really liked it. They have an assortment of deserts including Mexican sweets and bread. They even had Mexican popsicles. The man working behind the counter was very friendly. I will be a regular!
google avatar

Dianne M.

Yelp
Best tres leche cake I ever ate before. Awesome! I highly recommend this bakery. Prices are great!
google avatar

Shazana K.

Yelp
Best tres leches cake I've ever had. Been going here for over a decade and their cakes are consistently divine!

Yelp
Love this bakery for their Tres Leches cake. My husband is not a sweet lover but he do like their cakes. It is not too sweet which is what I like, and perfect moisture. Their chocolate cake is good as well. Not a big fan of their pan dulce. The short lady is a bit rude, not a people person at all. The owner is super friendly!

S K.

Yelp
I have been coming to this bakery to get lots of tasty treats for around 6 years now. I LOVE the custard filled churros, tamales, pineapple upside down cake, bread pudding, fruit (guava, mango, pineapple, etc) or caramel filled empanadas, pastries, croissants, breads, and cakes (German Choco, Tres Leches, etc). GLUTENFREE FREE DINERS: I talked to Carlos the owner, and we have 4 items here that are gluten free that I have been fine with. They have elote tamales, as well as 3 sweet treats. The rice cookies are great, taste like a shortbread cookie with a good crunch. There are also some fruit filled margarita cookies. My ALL TIME FAVORITES are the quesadillas, which are actually like a muffin hybrid of yellow cake, but are made with rice flour and cream cheese, I love love love these when I need to quench my cupcake or muffin cravings.

Yelp
I stumbled upon this little bakery a few years ago looking for an emergency slice of Tres Leches. Their Tres Leches is yummy and moist.
google avatar

Khoi Tuan P.

Yelp
Really good.... bought all 6 types of cake slices and cupcakes and churro perfect taste.
google avatar

SukiLeiRu M.

Yelp
Small bakery but you're there for goodies... Yummy pastries and deserts!!! Will definitely be going back there. Their cookies, turn-overs and cakes are so delicious!!! Definitely yum-yums there. You must stop by. It may look empty from the outside but what they bake will most definitely surprise you. I'm very glad I finally stopped in.
google avatar

Itzamara J.

Yelp
Their milhojas cake is the best I've had in this area! I always order it for my moms birthday, the one part that sucks is that I'm not always in town (since you have to order it 2 weeks prior), you have to make the orders in person. You can't call to make an order or pay over the phone. I've had to get friends to do it for me when I can't physically do it. The lady that is always there (middle aged) always has such a blank stare and comes off rude and monotone. I've been coming here for about 9 years and have just grown use to her. The owner on the other hand is super sweet and welcoming, he will try his best to fit your needs for what you may want to order. The bolillo, all the pan dulce, and the cakes here are good and it's super cheap!!!
google avatar

Ruben G.

Yelp
I've been a customer since 2005, at the time it was great traditional Mexican style bread (Pan Dulce) made in house by the owner he is I'm Spain great guy, they have the Best Tres Leches Cake in town, Never dry, not too sweet and at a good price. Unfortunately In the past couple of years, the "pan dulce" started shrinking and the price started expanding slightly, I guess the economy is making him cut back, it is still good "Pan Dulce" and it's still the best Tres Leches in town(no cutbacks on that) I hope he bring back his original recepies sizes soon, I found another excellent bakery "El Bolillo" but only visit when I have to drive downtown since its about 20 miles from home.
google avatar

Jamie A.

Yelp
From the outside appearance you would never expect a bakery like this in a little strip center. The pan dulce was really good, not great, but good. The empanadas were light and flaky and come in a multitude of flavors. The cream cheese one was the best! The cuernitos were okay, but I like mine to have a little stronger anise flavor. The bolillos were freshly baked and a bargain at 3 for a dollar. I did try a slice of tres leches. It was good, but not the best I have ever had. It was a little sweeter than I like. It had a nice frosting, but I prefer mine with an Italian merengue. The owner was very nice and friendly. He made me feel very welcome. I will definitely be back to try more.

Yelp
Cakes are so good and open late every night until 8 pm. Call ahead if you have a favorite Mexican cake they sell out fast

L T.

Yelp
Wasn't the greatest, simply okay. Went for the churros, they were not fresh anymore so I was disappointed. The rest of the pastries are okay. I feel you can get better ones elsewhere.

Yelp
I have never before met such a rude person in my entire life. I came in here to see if I could get a tres leches cake for my son's birthday. we called on a Friday to see if it was too late to get a cake for Sunday. They told us we had to come in, but at no point did they say that we had to order at least two days in advance. I came in today on a Saturday to try to get a cake. The lady at the counter looked at me as if I was crazy, never once smiled, then rudely said that I needed to come 2 days in advance. But then decided that she could do it for me. She then waved her hands around asked me which kind of cake I wanted. It was my first time coming into the bakery and I was so surprised at her attitude I didn't even know what to say. Finally I said I just wanted something simple just with the words Happy Birthday written on it. When I said I had to have it by 2 p.m. she sighed again loudly and in annoyance, so I just said that's fine, I can take my business elsewhere. I have had their Tres Leches brought home by other people and enjoyed it and which is why I wanted to get the cake for my son's birthday, but let it be known I will never return and will never try to get a cake from there again, and also will not recommend this place to anyone who wants to get a cake. Go get it at HEB, you're probably better served there.
google avatar

Meriem B.

Yelp
Had it not been for yelp I would've never found this place. The sign just says "Bakery" and doesn't show the name of the business unless you look at the windows. When I walked in I was pretty disappointed in how small of a selection they have. We only bought 3 empanadas and 2 conchas to give it a try. Once I got home and tried them, I was pleasantly surprised at how delicious they were. The empanadas had wayyyyy more filling than most places usually put in them. My favorite was the cajeta one for sure. It wasn't the typical rich cajeta. It was more of a milky cajeta that was yummy! Their dough has a delicious flavor that isn't overly sweet. If i'm ever in the mood for some Mexican bread and i'm in the area, i'll definitely stop by again.
google avatar

Lisa J.

Yelp
I've been going here every time we've needed to do laundry since our dryer broke. Every time I come here, I'm always warmly greeted by the employees and it smells WONDERFUL. And the pastries are really reasonably priced! The churros and caramel empanadas are amazing, and aren't in the least bit expensive. You have to try this place at least once. I guarantee that you won't be disappointed. : )
google avatar

Marielle S.

Yelp
This place is my little hole in the wall. While I was abroad, I dreamed of their conchas, cuatro leches cake, pan de anís, and all their other delicious goods. I'm from Mexico, and I can say this bakery has better pastries than some of the best bakeries in Monterrey. Please go here, it's the best. It really is. Try the anis bread. And splurge on some empanadas.
google avatar

Karron G.

Yelp
Tres Leches cake here is hands down the best I have ever had!!!! They make it from scratch everyday and it has real whipped cream that is lightly sweet and oh so fluffy!! I promise you will not find one that tastes better anywhere else, because I've had them and they were sorely in adequate. Their other bakery goods are delectable also!
google avatar

Angelika F.

Yelp
I went there for the first time today and was amazed by the selection and the prices! Their cookies are also quite delicious. Definitely recommend!

Abhignya M.

Yelp
Best place for tres leches! Love all the different types of breads. Must visit place!

Beth P.

Yelp
I really enjoy the conchas, empanadas, bolillos, and all the pastries here. Amazing value and a special treat for our family! Haven't yet ordered a cake from them but have bought slices from their display case - very tasty! Some reviews mention rude service, but we've never found that to be the case. We've always had a pleasant experience and frequently had friendly conversations with the folks here. Definitely try this place!

Yuni E.

Yelp
This is a great bakery I was impress with the variety of the bread that I took one of each :)) I even find mangoneadas very nice lady that helps us and describe the owners pictures on the wall when we ask her about them she was a sweet lady :))I'm a happy camper with this place will back soon.

jax j.

Yelp
THIS PLACE HAS SET THE BAR FOR ALL TRES LECHES CAKES IN MY LIFE. I cannot express this statement enough. I've tried countless Tres Leches over the years in Houston, LA, and NY but this is the one I compare all the rest to. It's sily, soft, not too sweet, and doused in 3 types of cream- how can you go wrong? Tres Leches cakes are one of those baked goods that tastes better the 2nd, 3rd, + 4th day of existence. The milk will have a chance to penetrate all the layers of the cake. I tried the Strawberry Tres Leches cake for kicks once and it wasn't nearly as punchy and flavorful as the Tres Leches cake. Strawberry Tres Leches is 6/10, whereas the original Tres Leches is 13/10! ;) I love you Horno Monterrey Bakery!

Ana E.

Yelp
This place has good sweet bread. And the ladies are super friendly. Place is always clean and smells so good
google avatar

Evy R.

Yelp
Tres leches was not as great as other people here are saying. It was too sweet for my taste and dry.
google avatar

Tiffany G.

Yelp
This place is great. I love "mom and pop" kind of places. This place has great sweet bread. I am used to Arandas bakery so the selection is much much bigger compared to here. But if Im looking for sweet bread without driving 30min to get it this is my go to place. Having a smaller selection that Im used to is the only drawback.
