"While the bulk of Philly’s best summer produce comes from scenic Lancaster County, there aren’t all that many spots to enjoy it in situ. That’s where Horse Inn comes galloping in. Located in downtown Lancaster, the lively pub might not have the most bucolic views. But the oft-changing menu reads like a who’s who of mom-and-pop farms. Drinks-wise, the selection is decidedly democratic with everything from $2 domestic cans to expertly crafted cocktails. The venue, around since the 1920s, has a throwback vibe with a hint of speakeasy charm — fitting, considering the site was at one point an actual speakeasy." - Caroline Coral

Excellent food. Live music was also excellent. Three of us had a drink at the bar and then moved to a table for dinner. We shared the loaded French fry appetizer as we had been traveling and wanted something quick. They were good. I had their delicious version of a BLT with fried green tomatoes, mozzarella and local bacon.

Our meal tonight was really good - Thank you to Abbie our server. She knew the exact flavors of the dishes. Wonderful halibut. Per husband the shrimp and grits were the best he ever had.

We found this little gem many years ago and have returned time to time and are never disappointed. Last night was no exception. Food was phenomenal and service was great. Always love the atmosphere. Parking is always a little tricky but we usually find a spot.

This place was awesome definitely would go back. Burton B was an amazing waiter the food and drink was excellent. Great atmosphere cool building. They are doing a great thing. They even have a vending machine you can buy a T-shirt in that's cool too. Cool little town parking lot is a book warehouse I believe. Fall fried gains are awesome so delicious and my husband got shrimp and grits he said it was the best shrimp he ever had.

Google
Great food, fantastic service and amazing atmosphere. Was there from out of town for a business dinner and was treated to some unexpected live jazz. Top shelf mixology going on in this place as well. A must try.

One of my favorite places to dine and drink in Lancaster. I love that this place is so top notch, but the vibe is very relaxed and fairly casual. The food and drinks are always consistent and I've never had a bad time here.

Google
For starters, the food here was very good. It was flavorful and filling. The servers were helpful and friendly, and they were great at assisting their customers. I thought that the building was neat too and I liked seeing how it had been converted from a stable to a restaurant. I would gladly come here again if I found myself in Lancaster.

5 Stars isn't enough to rate! It's more like perfect 10!! The burger was the best I've ever had nation wide 🏆 and the horse 🐎 fries was an experience I won't ever forget. Andrew was a delight to meet and atmosphere put the cherry on top. Kudos to the chef 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Yelp
After having the debate of whether our GPS had betrayed us and dropped us into the middle of nowhere, we finally followed some Yelp pictures to find this spot. It's not that the signs aren't visible or the address not accurate, it's just that it feels very out of place in an urban downtown without a ton of other businesses close by. Moving past that initial hiccup, you climb up a flight of stairs to reach a trendy, fun inn with great food and a deep beer list. My group was seated immediately by a friendly hostess, though we were met by a waitress who seemed to be having an off day. Happens to the best of us! What wasn't having an off day was the food, which was stellar. We got cheesy fries with sausage incorporated as an appetizer, and they were phenomenal. I grabbed a burger after that, which was a combination of short rib, brisket, Chuck, and dry aged beef. The flavor oozed out with every bite, with crisp, fresh toppings punctuating every delicious morsel. To top it all off, the salad was awesome too, both in look and taste. This is why you can't always trust your instincts, even when they scream "your wife is right, you did put the wrong address in the GPS."

Yelp
Our last dinner on vacation in the area we came here and it was delicious! We were staying right up the street so we actually walked to dinner too which was nice. Service was great.

Jeremiah R.

Yelp
This place is so cool. It's a very old establishment with a newer owner. Worth checking out just for the history. The food is very good and they make fantastic mixed drinks. They make their food from scratch, very fresh. Best burger in town!

Rakesh R.

Yelp
We walked in just past 5:00pm and were able to snag the last available table. Pro tip: make a reservation! We aren't from the area so we had no clue how busy it would be. Every seat was filled. There was live music (pianist) who was incredibly nice. We took our baby daughter near him to get a closer look as she was really enjoying it and he played a short, fun rendition of "If you're happy and you know it..." for her, which she loved! Service was very friendly and the cocktail was stellar. Food was great. Burger was perfectly cooked. Fries were fantastic - had a light breading on them, providing a crisp exterior. The burrata appetizer stole the show. Don't think twice; just order it. The shrimp and grits were just OK - probably wouldn't order again but I'm not a huge shrimp and grits fan anyway. The pot du crème dessert was the perfect end to a great meal. Great experience. If we are ever in Lancaster, this is where we'll go (and we'll make a reservation!).

Yelp
One of the best places to eat in Lancaster...at least always one of our favorites. Fun and interesting atmosphere, great service, and always delicious food. Drinks are creative and tasty. It's always a great time if the Tom Pontz project is playing too, but sit far enough away from them if you want to have a conversation and listen at the same time. Come here for a nice date evening, or time with friends. You won't be disappointed. Clayton was our very friendly and helpful server this evening. * Added note - follow their IG page, and their garden page for more insight into the business . They pride themselves on good, service and support local food suppliers/businesses.

Yelp
A very nice, tavern style restaurant with very good food! Decorated well and lively. There is standard fare as well as several interesting dishes that you will not find elsewhere in the city. Service was laid back yet prompt. Only 'complaint' would be the difficulty to get a reservation/table. They reserve a certain percent and leave the rest of the tables for walk in. I'm not a great planner and previously attempted to go last minute; and it took 4 tries to get a table with a reasonable wait. Highly recommend!

Lindsay B.

Yelp
Wonderful place. Drinks were great, food was delicious, service was fast and super friendly. Will definitely go back! The tips and toast were wonderful. The pot de creme was perfectly chocolatey and salty.

John M.

Yelp
I drove past this place one time because it didn't even look like a restaurant from the outside in this little neighborhood. This time I went in. Up the stairs to the bar and restaurant. What a kool place! Old firehouse turned into a really nice place with a kool vibe. I ordered the chicken liver pate' with berry jam on top served with toast tips. This was over the top! Fresh and really tasty. Next I got the pork sandwich with collard greens. It was such a good sandwich! Had a Smokey taste which really kicked it up. I sat at the bar, service was great! I'd recommend this place to any and all.

Larry M.

Yelp
What a great place! Full of history and a wonderful atmosphere. Food was a treat and service was top notch. We had the burrata with beets and candied walnuts, the shrimp and grits and a cheeseburger with "horse fries" (a must if you like french fries). One of the best burgers I've ever had. Everything was excellent. We only wish we lived closer so we could return.

Sara C.

Yelp
Wow! Completely unassuming when you walk up, looks like nothings going on... then you walk upstairs and are welcomed by the warm and chatty atmosphere. We were sat quickly despite being told 30-45 min wait. Piano player was wonderful and added to the vibe. We ordered the Kalettes, cross between kale and Brussels Sprouts (a winter crop apparently) flash fried with sesame seeds and a sweet and tangy fish sauce, so delicious!!! The burger was a 10/10, and the fries were perfect. My date had the fried cauliflower and rice with kimchi, very spicy and flavorful. Shoofly pie for dessert was delicious. Excellent service, Would definitely be back!!

Fred B.

Yelp
Bartender Tim is an amazing mixologist! And my burger was one of the best I've ever eaten!

Yelp
Got here at 7PM on a Tuesday and it was packed. There was some parking on the other side of Marshall that was full, so I parked a few blocks South and walked over. I would consider Horse Inn a speakeasy. The entrance is nondescript and I would not have known it was a restaurant had it not been for Yelp. Once you go upstairs, there's a bar area with tables in the back. I was seated at the bar almost immediately since I was by myself. Tried two dishes the bartender recommended: Tips N Toast - chunks of steak, cooked medium and sitting on french bread in a pool of sauce. Pretty flavorful - black pepper, Worcestershire?, red wine. Wish the bread was separate because it was soaked through and didn't have much life to give. Farmers Salad with Ranch - lightly dressed (which is my preference) and a ton of different fresh veggies. Maybe the marketing of local greens and house-made dressing got me. Thought this was solid, but nothing special. My recommendation? Bring a friend or two and share. I would have liked a half portion of what I ordered and then gotten to try a few more things. Grab a cocktail. I felt kind of lame coming to place like this and not trying one of their unique drinks. Unfortunately, work beckons for me tomorrow. Make a reservation. This place is popular!

Mark B.

Yelp
Absolutely spectacular. Possibly the best Manhattan I've ever had, the chicken pate app was awesome, the chicken cassoulet was perfect, and the fluffernutter pie was great. 5 stars, gotta go!

Jessica M.

Yelp
I looked at the menu ahead of time so I already knew it offered more than basic pub fare, but I still have to say that I was extremely impressed by the food, especially in the context of the somewhat dive-y atmosphere (in a fun way!). We loved the chicken liver mousse, beets, and catch of the day (halibut), and my mezcal cocktail was really fun. The service was great. And then halfway through our delicious meal a band started playing some live jazz! If we lived in the area we'd be regulars, but the next time we visit we'll be sure to come back.

Dan M.

Yelp
still 5 stars. I had the Nashville hot chicken which was hot and CRISPY! Had to get a side of horse fries as well. My wife had gemelli, which was the first time we had pasta, amazing as well! We ended with the pot de creme and wet bottom shoo-fly pie. My wife really wanted the shoo-fly pie but ended up eating my pot de crème, it was sensational. So happy to come back and can't say enough good things about Horse Inn.

Patrick S.

Yelp
I really like the atmosphere in this place. I had shrimp and grits and my wife had a BLT. Both were excellent. Dessert was excellent. Home made icecream was very good.

Margaret D.

Yelp
What a wonderful place! Atmosphere is outstanding! Old world charm. The staff is amazing! Food and cocktails are absolutely delicious! Burgers and horse fries = bliss !!!!

Xandrea J.

Yelp
Pleasantly surprised! My husband and I took a little road trip out of the city for the weekend and decided to come to Lancaster. I saw many of the positive views on the Horse Inn and thought we'd give it a try. When we first walked in and went up to the host stand, I was underwhelmed. Theennnnnnnn, we were actually seated in the larger part of the restaurant and I was impressed. It was larger than I thought, had a nice ambiance, there's even a set-up for live music. Now, let me get to the good (no the great) stuff. First up, I ordered the petey pablo drink. It was sooo delicious. I am a cocktail snob, so trust me when I say that drink was goodT! (yes with the T at the end). I ordered 2 more - each one, was delicious. I was not expecting top tier cocktails from a place called the Horse Inn. Next up the food! When I tell you I was not expecting this good ole, down south, put your foot in it cooking!! I had the chicken and dumplings and some of my husband's horse fries, everything was 10/10! The chicken was moist and seasoned to perfection. The dumplings, were moist and sopped up the gravy they were sitting in perfectly. I can taste it while I'm typing lol. I would definitely go back! Also, the service was great! Our waiter was very friendly and even gave us recommendations for dining for the remainder of our weekend! Do yourself a favor and be sure to stop here if you're visiting or passing through Lancaster!

Yelp
During a recent trip to Lancaster for the Polar Express, we stumbled upon this gem without having a reservation. Arriving at 530p, the hostess said it would be an hour wait. I'm happy we stuck around because we really enjoyed everything about this historic establishment. Situated in a former stable, the building's rich history was evident and they did a great job offering a glimpse into Lancaster's past. Our food was delicious and the staff was accommodating to my family especially since we had two young children. The extra effort in both food and drinks - especially their cocktails, showed they're serious about impressing their customers. My wife loved her steak tidbits and my burger was great.. The kids enjoyed their food and in all this was a great visit. For those in Lancaster, this is a a must-visit spot, where you get everything from history and hospitality paired with great food and drinks.

Kylie C.

Yelp
This place was really hyped up to me by the locals I was with (it's a fav of theirs). As a former local, it was nice to find a place I'd not been too (although with Lancaster's constant evolution, this isn't hard to do anymore). They had live music - that usually guarantees brownie points from me. Two older guys on bass and keys jamming like nobody's business. The food was good, overpriced for quantity (but it was locally sourced, so that's probably why $$+). Small menu, fun drink options. I give it 4 for the vibe, dessert, and creative drinks - just know your bill is gonna be higher. It's loud, between the music, conversation, and nothing to soak up the sound...so prepare yourself to shout when talking or get reallllly close to your dining companions. I did order a salad (which I feel like let down the waiter/bartender) compared to my two other dining companions orders (handhelds and the special fries that this place is known for). My steak was rare, which means it was perfect and cooked to order. Fresh greens. I sampled some of the fries, and they did live up to the hype. Dessert (not pictured!) was FABULOUS. We got the chocolate mousse dish. It was so creamy, rich, and hints of sea salt on top P.s. it's an old converted stable, pretty cool!

John S.

Yelp
From the outside the Horse Inn is as nondescript as anyplace I've ever seen, but the inside has amazing atmosphere. They are extremely busy, we weren't able to make a reservation and we just a 1 1/2 hour wait at 5 o'clock, but we were able to sit at the bar. They have a good variety on their menu and prices are reasonable, but everything is à la carte. I have the tips & toast and my wife got the farmers salad, both were excellent. I highly recommend, but I'm not a fan of the à la carte.

Katie L.

Yelp
This place is a GEM. The food is unreal, so fresh & delicious. The drinks are unique & excellently crafted. The ambiance is gorgeous: it gives speak-easy meets equestrian. Live 3-peice band. It's a historic Lancaster establishment for a reason. 15/10 love this place!

Ann Marie C.

Yelp
Been meaning to try this restaurant and wow, wow, wow .... It did not disappoint! The decor was cool and the piano player did an awesome job. It was kinda loud, but it fit the vibe and we didn't mind it. Our waiter Lewis was great! He had a wonderful personality, made recommendations, always checking-in on us to see if we needed anything. Great beer selection, I had the blood orange IPA and it was good! We ordered the wings and pea salad. The wings were small, but not dry and perfectly dressed with bbq sauce. I got the burger and fries and hands down the best burger I ever had, loved it! The guys got shrimp and grits and it was prepared perfectly and bursting with flavor! We ended with a coffee, chocolate mousse and sweet cream ice cream! A perfect ending to an outstanding meal. The menu is limited, but if you're a foodie ..... run, don't walk and enjoy!! Cheers!

Ana'ar M.

Yelp
Great food, good people, and a fab atmosphere. It's a one of a kind experience. The famous Tip's n toast is soooo delicious, the seasonal menu items are amazing. Drinks are one of a kind and the personnel are very helpful.

Fred S.

Yelp
Went here for my wife's birthday and it was fabulous! Happening atmosphere and delicious food!

Nick R.

Yelp
Great combination of food and drinks. Parking is the only complaint, as it is on a side street.

Steven R.

Yelp
Fantastic food! Fantastic ambience! Very eclectic place! BUT...parking stinks. I'm not sure if there is parking or not, but we parked on the street and got a ticket.

Lorraine G.

Yelp
Great hole-in-the-wall place to grab a delicious meal! We thoroughly enjoyed the craft cocktails and corn ice cream

Mario H.

Yelp
It's a great date spot or simply nice comfy dinner spot. Service was great, and food was great. We had a mishap with our salad serving where we asked specifically for a different dressing and it came out wrong, but they quickly fixed it. Pork chop is plenty and delicious. Too bad we missed any live music, but we didn't mind at all. Great place to visit. Would come back again.

Amiyah F.

Yelp
Just average. The meal was decent, but portions are quite tiny and overpriced. It is just too fancy and elitist. The serving of mussels hardly came with bread; ordered extra and charged $6! A bit absurd, in my opinion.

Adam H.

Yelp
An hour and a half wait for a place that is empty and doesn't take reservations. Didn't even waist my time and will not go back again.

George S.

Yelp
Everything about the Horse Inn is authentic! The bars, the booths, the live music & friendly servers just top off the creative house drinks & the cool seasonal menu items! The horse fries are a must try for 1st timers and if you are adventurous the chicken liver pâté is flat out delicious! You can make reservations or walk-in & hang at the bar if you need to wait for a table....you'll enjoy the wait!

Lorena C.

Yelp
ALWAYS ask locals about their favorite spots & you'll find gems like "Horse Inn". The outside is simple but there is NOTHING simple about this place. Walk into a cool cozy & sexy atmosphere, a great date night spot :) The hostess was so nice, sweet, & accommodating because we did not have a reservation. Started our visit at the bar for a drink while we waited. The bartender was attentive & helpful AND THEN made us amazing drinks, "Old Fashion & Manhattan". Once seated we ordered "Horse Fries" and they were crispy, savory, & melted in our mouths. Hubby ordered a "Horse Cheeseburger" and he said it is in his TOP10, which is impressive since it's his favorite & most ordered meal. I ended up with the "Summer Sausage" out of all their amazing choices. I was NOT disappointed but it was missing something...maybe a PICO or GUAC, something cold, refreshing, raw...but it was delicious. We also had a "Saving Grace" which is a lovely, perfectly balanced Vodka cocktail. Oh and there was fantastic live music that was the icing on the cake...AWESOMENESS ALL AROUND :) DEFINITELY TRY THIS PLACE, great all around!

Ginger O.

Yelp
I was very pleased with the service, food, and atmosphere! What more can be said? I definitely recommend the place, and will return often!

Cass O.

Yelp
This place is awesome! Great drinks, great fires and great atmosphere! What more could you ask for? I am not sure if they have parking or it is street only but parking would be the only down side.

Lydia C.

Yelp
Amazing place! I'm from out of town and was looking for a place for a late dinner. The vibes inside were awesome. My boyfriend and I tried two of the signature cocktails and they were great. I got the beef tips and they were delicious. Would definitely go again the next time I'm in the area!

Yelp
Honestly, worth it. $3 random beer, great atmosphere. ode disappointed there was no piano player, food was AWESOME, service was stellar, will strike again

Yelp
Great place.... Parking are just down the street. They music the night we were there.... Nice touch!

Yelp
No negative reviews during this difficult time. Our small businesses need our support now, more than ever before. Please be patient and be kind and remember to think local. Even with takeout, please consider tipping generously. We need to do all we can to save our favorite businesses and their employees. Online ordering and curbside pickup was super easy! Gentlemen was wearing a mask and I observed him using hand sanitizer after each car side delivery. The Korean Fried Cauliflower was tasty! And had a kick! We also ordered the Shrimp & Grits, Horse Inn Cheeseburger, wings, and Horse Fries. Everything travelled well and we were more than satisfied!

Deb F.

Yelp
Fun quirky ambience with a great history. Food is always solid and the beef tips continue to delight every time!

Michelle M.

Yelp
Note: Beware of the parking restrictions just outside of this restaurant. Otherwise, everything else from the service to the food is exceptional! Our server, Louis, was great -- he was friendly, helpful, and provided nice banter and recommendations. The beer selection is good as is the food. We thoroughly enjoyed the Horse Inn burger and wedge salad. The chocolate ice cream (Louis sold it to us with his giddy grin) reminded us of the chocolate milk at Oregon Dairy. Best part is the ambiance. The piano man playing rock classics reminded me of the Westworld soundtrack. We sang along as he played and we truly enjoyed our date night.

Harley H.

Yelp
Parking downtown was easy, not always the case in the city. The restaurant is adorably decorated, so much to look at enjoy. Lots of wooden features and time-piece decor. The night we were there, the had live music. Very enjoyable, and not overbearingly loud like many places can be. Our service, both at the bar and then at our table was quick, friendly and efficient. There was a lot you could to choose from on the menu, the variety offered many selections. I had a burger this evening. It was a good-sized burger and it was bangin! Highly recommend giving it a try.

Sandra M.

Yelp
Food was good. Serve was good. Problem was they didn't except Horse Inn gift cards. I found this out when the bill came. I was given gift certificates to the Horse Inn as a birthday present, which is why I was there. The restaurant had in the past been an excellent restaurant so I did not think to ask before I ordered if they except Horse Inn gift cards . The manager informed me that THEY had a technical problem on there end, so they could not except Horse Inn gift certificates at that time. The manager did comp the drinks. I'm stuck was $100.00 Horse Inn gift certificate that equals $0.00. I also noticed on the bill they add a service tip for the kitchen . I would have generously tip the kitchen had they taken the Horse Inn gift certificate Just saying....

John F.

Yelp
The neighborhood go-to. Top quality across the board. Quite possibly the best all-around restaurant in town.

Matthew B.

Yelp
Went with a small family group. Great fun place. Kitschy western theme with lots of decorations and a great jazz trio. Good food, great drinks and service. I can see why it's popular - and tonight was no exception. Repeat performance warranted.

Richard B.

Yelp
Great food, great service. Best cheeseburger I've ever had. Just be sure to get there right at opening if you don't have a reservation!

King T.

Yelp
I was in Lancaster for the night and wanted to find a good place for dinner. There were some recommendations for this place, so I thought I'd give it a try with my coworker. It's in the middle of a residential area, and can be easy to miss unless you have an eagle eye. After making our way upstairs after walking inside, we get to the actual bar and restaurant. Piano playing filled the air, and there was a vibrant atmosphere. There were a TON of dates going on in the restaurant. Literally every table was coupled up, which makes sense because the place had a fairly romantic vibe. My coworker and I ordered Horse Fries to start, he ordered the burger and I got the Tips and Toast based on the recommendations from our server. The food was pretty good. I really enjoyed the Tips and Toast, although the toast was essentially just soggy bread drowned in sauce. But the steak tips were cooked very well, and I really liked the wine sauce. My cocktail was really good too (I believe it was called the Bonality Now). Overall food was good, atmosphere was nice, and my drink was excellent!
