"It took a while, but the Hospes group has moved into the capital. The patented Hospes formula (classic building, modern-luxe interiors, signature spa and restaurant) is on display in this classic 19th-century building just off the Plaza de la Indepencia, deep in the heart of Madrid." - MICHELIN Guide

"Hospes Madrid From its perch overlooking the iconic 18th-century Puerta de Alcalá, at the northwest corner of the verdant Parque del Retiro, the Hospes Madrid appears to be a traditional institution of the Spanish capital. Built for a widowed duchess in the late 19th century by renowned architect José María Aguilar, the red brick townhouse is a prime example of Bourbon Restoration architecture, but, when the luxury Hospes chain took it over, the design team transformed the onetime private apartments into an ode to minimalist modern style, complete with frameless mirrors and clean-lined white leather sofas. The ground-floor café, too, was once a landmark for the upper echelons of Madrileño society; the new owners reimagined the Cafetería Independencia as a sleeker version worthy of a design magazine spread. But lovers of tradition and design need not fear. The Hospes team didn’t throw the baby out with the bathwater. They preserved original architectural details such as ornate crown moldings and wood beams, alongside the café and restaurant’s acclaimed cuisine and prime sidewalk views. And they even improved a few things, too, converting the old stables into a luxury spa and turning the top floors into duplex-style suites overlooking the park. So maybe the Hospes Madrid isn’t quite the beacon of old Madrid it seems, but that’s not a bad thing."

Hospes Puerta de Alcalá

"Start us off with an overview.Located near beautiful El Retiro Park, the compact Hospes Puerta de Alcalá has a townhouse façade that belies its contemporary interiors. And when you can chat with the front desk via Whatsapp, it’s clear this hotel is a next-gen addition to Madrid. What's the backstory?Reflecting the architecture of the Bourbon Restoration, this structure was a purpose-built series of residences for a bourgeoisie arrived via horse-drawn carriages, pulling up to the wooden entrances that remain in place today. A member of the Hospes chain, the hotel is located in Madrid's elite Plaza de la Independencia neighborhood. Tell us about the accommodations. Any tips on what to book?Rooms retain their original architectural accents, including tall ceilings and crown moldings. Polished hardwood floors seem to be a growing trend across Madrid, and the cushioned headboards call like a siren if you’ve just arrived after a long-haul flight. Deluxe rooms are larger than the standard Dreamer category, and Deluxe Alcalá rooms have the best views. The character of the building really comes to life in the top-floor Junior Suite, which features original cathedral ceilings and exposed wooden beams. Families can opt for a suite or a Family Room with a third bed—kids will love to run around in the park across the street. Drinking and dining—what are we looking at?An onsite restaurant serves Spanish food from around the country; it's busiest at breakfast or in warm weather, when tables and chairs spill onto the sidewalk. There are also particularly impressive options for diners with dietary restrictions. And the service?Service is efficient, but nothing particularly memorable. What type of travelers will you find here?Spanish and European guests predominate, but Americans will find this local option quite welcoming, too. Daily walks through the park before and after sightseeing are energizing ways to unwind. What about the neighborhood? The majestic Puerta de Alcalá, straddling Salamanca and many of the famous museums along Paseo del Prado, is right nearby. Is there anything you'd change?WiFi is only free if you book with the hotel directly—everyone else has to pay. Any other hotel features worth noting? In addition to the free wireless Internet router to use around town, if you book a room directly through the hotel, you'll get a short massage and welcome drink. Bottom line: Who should stay here?Outdoorsy types will love the location near El Retiro Park." - Ramsey Qubein

We had a wonderful room facing the rear courtyard. It was quiet and easily accessible (we used the staircase our entire stay except for check in and check out when we had our luggage). The amenities in the room included a Nespresso coffee maker that we used daily. We enjoyed the complimentary champagne in our room as well as the turn down service and the staff went above and beyond with their service and friendliness.||Our stay occurred during the blackout and we were lucky that the hotel was able to accommodate us with cold foods: salads, sandwiches, wine and beer. They pulled in the standing propane patio heaters from the front restaurant, which was closed to the public, so that we could have light in the rear patio seating area.||The location conveniently across the street from the park was perfect for morning runs. Although we didn't get a chance to use the exercise room, pool, or hammams, they were great amenities to have.

After a long day and late night arrival we appreciated the pleasant welcoming reception by the hotel staff. They have a complimentary welcome drink of water and champagne. ||The location is ideal for walking around to museums, restaurants and public transit. ||As a Marriott “Autograph” hotel, the historic architecture makes this place charming with interesting spaces. ||Given our titanium elite status we had hoped for a room with a view. Instead we got a courtesy bottle of champagne. Our room was clean with a well stocked mini-bar, and Nespresso coffee maker. There was a large bathtub that seemed to be an awkward addition as it made for a tight fit accessing the toilet room doors. The rain head shower was terrific as were the quality of shampoo and toiletries. ||The breakfast buffet is a bit pricey with all the usual dishes and accoutrements. Breads, cheeses, meats, fruit and cereals fill the buffet bar with egg dishes ready to order. ||While it was available onsite we didn’t partake in the spa. They offered various massages and facial treatments. ||This is the place to come if you want to be centrally located and in walking distance of the tourist attractions.

Room is big and clean. Pillows are difficult to support my head & neck. Breakfast menu is average not impressed. Dinner for half-board is limited. Restaurant manage Mr Wong helps to get better selection the second day. He is super busy and friendly. Location is great. Near two landmarks. From airport to hotel: 5 euro by bus (crowded), Uber overcharged me by 20 euro (price on the app is not the same as final cost). Please be careful. Taxi fee is ~33 euro fixed cost.

This is admittedly a high quality hotel. We stayed in two rooms each with a balcony facing the Alcala rotunda, and both were exceptional. The beds were fresh clean and cozy. The staff is professional, the breakfast very fine. The front desk, or rather one or two persons who sometimes man the front desk, may be the hotel’s weak link. Maybe it was the language barrier, but the vibe was welcome upon arrival but inverse to Hotel California after check-in, where instead of “you can never leave”, they prefer no one to ever stay. I think their job would be easier if no one ever checked in? Probably a bit more schooling in customer relations is in order.

Manuel was incredibly welcoming and knowledgeable. He guided us to the best, local coffee spot and made sure everything was perfect for our stay. The hotel was beautiful and everything was within walking distance. We were welcomed with champagne, chocolate, and friendly faces. This will be our go to hotel when we come back to Madrid!

The entire hotel staff were very helpful, very friendly, very congenial, and very knowledgeable, I would especially thank Manuel, Daniel, and Ilia for their enthusiasm and assistance with anything we needed or wanted. Also, the ladies who waited on us for breakfast were outstanding. Everyone was fantastic.

As my usual hotels were sold out, I chose this hotel as it was close to where I needed to be for my business trip. The (rather expensive) rooms are on the small side and not really functional for a business traveller: no desk, only one power socket, dozens of switches for the lights, yet two lights illuminating the step cannot be turned off, rather loud A/C, a super slow lift (one for the whole hotel) and no real lobby (however, the restaurant at the square is nice to have an afterwork drink). Furthermore, the coffee machine in my room was broken. Staff were very friendly and helpful. For leisure the rooms are fine, but don’t expect a super luxurious 5*, rather a quaint 4* city hotel.

Manuel, Nelson, and the rest of the team took exceptional care of us during our stay - the room was lovely, clean, and comfortable. The staff were all extremely helpful and friendly, and they made our honeymoon special. The complimentary breakfast was delicious and high quality. The hotel is a perfect location, and easy find after a day of walking around Madrid thanks to its proximity to the arches and the park.

Yelp
Loved this hotel. A fabulous buffet breakfast is included in a indoor patio setting. Very good location....walked throughout Madrid, Prado, park, etc. Taxi stand for transportation to the airport is just outside. Madrid is a beautiful city.

Yelp
Stayed here after doing tons of research (and I mean tons) regarding the best hotel to stay at while in Madrid. Many reviews had stated that this hotel is in an excellent location as it's walking distance to many of the main sites in Madrid and is in a really nice neighborhood. It's located in the Salamanca area of Madrid, a ritzy neighborhood with great shopping and restaurants, but also within walking distance to all the major sites. In terms of location, I think we couldn't do any better than this! It's right across the street from Retiro park, within walking distance to plaza mayor (the city center square) as well as the el prado museum and reina Sofia. The restaurants in the area are also top notch and there's endless shopping right around the corner. In terms of service and staff, the hotel was amazing as well. The front desk was super helpful and booked dinner reservations and excursions for us such as the flamenco show. Everyone was nice and welcoming. The rooms themselves were also nice. The only slight criticism is that the toilet area and shower area are somewhat exposed. The doors are glass and see through so if you're looking for complete privacy in your room, it's a little inconvenient (although when I was perusing several reviews from other hotels, they had similar complaints so I wonder if it's just a European thing). Otherwise the rooms were very nice.

Yelp
Food was fantastic, Service not so much. Between 7:15pm and 9:15 I was served one (1) uno beer! We ordered Tapas to start and entrees. He came and set the tapas pretty quick and my beer but then we waited nearly 1-3/4 hours for a second beer and entrees. All three of the staff were infatuated with the register. It was crazy all the people waiting for food, drinks, orders to be taken, their bills while the staff stood at the register looking totally confused and flustered. I get it this is a slower pace in Spain, but really? We weren't the only ones frustrated and to add to the situation when we did finally get our bill they charged us for bread that they put on the table that we didn't ask for. two euros each for 2 tiny little rolls, then they charge for three beers which we did not receive! While we sat there Thirsty and not receiving our beers they probably provided them to other tables? Atmosphere was great, food was wonderful but the service and billing errors would keep us from going back.

Yelp
The service here was amazing and the breakfast buffet that came with our stay was actually very good. They have fruit, cheese, bread, yogurt parfaits , bacon and cream cheese with lox. You can order eggs and other items such as cappuccinos, lattes etc. Our room was spacious but not much room to store your clothes. Only one small chest of drawers. I used the closet for most of my clothes . Nice turn down service with chocolates . 24 hour room service. Very comfortable beds!

Yelp
Just had dinner here tonight with five work colleagues, and myself. The starters were fine, but when the oxtail and pork steaks came out at 12 midnight, they were certainly NOT fried, grilled or baked...... They were definitely MICROWAVED. They were then presented on a plate with just fries..... No sauce or jus.... NOTHING. Just a crusty piece of meat with fries. And you get all this for $320 I'm guessing the chef went home early and the waiters did our food, because it was horrible. And Jorge the waiter did not care. But that is ok, because the are hundreds of other places we can go eat in Madrid which are fantastic.

Yelp
This evening I had dinner at Hotel Hospes with my mother and sister while on vacation in Madrid. We chose this restaurant, because we were drawn to the ambiance, as it has a view of Puerta de Alcalá (the arches). Please don't make the same mistake we did. Sure the ambiance is appealing, but that is where the allure ends. The food left a lot to be desired. We ordered garlic prawns, yet received small, what appeared to be canned baby shrimp, the size of my thumb nail. The carbonera was tasteless and bland, as was my sister's sirloin steak and potatoes. The service was disappointing. I have a lot to say about what I didn't like, but my mother sitting over my shoulder is telling me not to. In summary, you have many amazing restaurants to choose from in this beautiful city; stay away from this one.

Yelp
I was really impressed with this hotel until I went to bed; the music at the club next door doesn't end until 3am and it's crazy loud. I can stand the sounds of a normal city life but that was absurdly loud. The constant thump of bass was torture. When you're laying wide awake in bed at 1:14am, counting the minutes until the music ends, and the only solution is for you to get dressed and move rooms,it's easy to also remember the jackhammer outside the front entrance of the hotel at 4pm today, the broken shower floor that literally rocked up and down like a teeter totter and the pipes that randomly poured water out of them.

Yelp
We only stayed here one night, but really liked it. The front desk was very personable, and you are treated to a glass of Champagne while you check in. The room was surprisingly large, and well appointed. It had a bed, sofa large shower, separate bathtub. You can walk to virtually everything. there are very hip bars right outside the front door that were always busy. Major shopping is right around the corner. The hotel itself is small, and there seems to be two "wings", although the are very close to each other. WiFi is complimentary.

Yelp
Although this is not a true five-star hotel it is well situated in a very good neighborhood with a lot of little bakeries and coffee shops and lunch places close by. The staff was excellent and Rumen and Ilian especially were very helpful and patient with giving us directions and names of places to eat. A great spot for a first-time visitor to Madrid thank you
