6 Best Day Trips from Barcelona, and the Itinerary to Know for Each | Condé Nast Traveler

"Hostal Sa Rascassa—in the tiny cove of Cala d’Aiguafreda, 10 minutes’ drive from Begur—is essentially a restaurant with five rooms, each of which has direct access to the ocean. That last word is important, because it’s where the magic happens. The restaurant uses all of its oceanic wizardry: First, in its logo, a poppy-red illustration of the spiky rascassa (scorpion fish) that it’s named after. Secondly, in its courtyard, all shady trees, pots of lavender, and the undeniably salty taste of sea air. Third, in its simple menu that doesn't trade in double-digit ingredient lists or molecular foams; instead, fresh fish that lets its quality do the talking. Much is grilled, such as octopus or brill, there’s a fish rice, or, for something lighter, a warm salad of scallops and prawns. One specialty to definitely try in Begur is the rock fish (or peix de roca ), which even has its own culinary festival." - Gemma Askham,Jessica Benavides Canepa

Hostal Sa Rascassa, Near Begur, Catalonia, Spain - Explore & Book

"At this five-roomed hostelry, it's all about the food. In-the-know gourmands come from afar to dine at the exceptional restaurant and soak up the sensational surroundings; Sa Rascassa sits on a pine-covered hill, and it's a mere 50m from a quiet unspoilt cove with clear water, with coastal paths to superb nearby beaches. From your quietly stylish room you can hear the waves lap on the shore. The real highlight, though, is the restaurant, laid out under trees bedecked with fairy lights, and overseen by super-friendly staff. The menu is fabulous, with pear and walnut tarts and lobster and chicken bake among the Catalan favourites; the extensive range of wines is similarly up to par. Grab a chilled cerveza from the honesty bar and watch the sun drop into the silvery sea to round off the day. If you can find availability here, grab it with both hands - you won't regret it! Highs The food is worth the drive alone, some of Catalonia's best; we feasted on straight-from-the-sea fish and rock mussels, grilled and steamed to perfection Fantastic sea views from the rooms' shared terrace All you can hear are the birds in the trees and the waves splashing the shore; the ambiance is super-relaxing Wonderful walks that lead out from the front door, and great snorkelling/diving in crystal-clear waters; you can plunge straight into the Med from the harbour below the hotel All the staff we met were charming and helpful, stopping to chat over dinner, and pleased to give advice on the region to hotel guests Lows The restaurant is closed on Tuesdays Rooms are fairly simple, and can be noisy during the evenings due to their position above the buzzy restaurant No pool, and you're left to your own devices from 4.30-7.30pm (this isn't a full-service hotel) July and August feel very busy, and generally have a 4-night and 7-night min stay respectively, though this can be flexible Nervous drivers might baulk at the steep 3km road from Begur, and the car park is often full in peak season (you might have to unload then park further up the hill)" - Laura Dixon

Everything was just perfect! The location was absolutely amazing, no distractions or crowds of town. Only 5 rooms, so it always felt calm and private. The cove was only steps from our room, and was only busy on the weekends. The restaurant was always serving up delicious food, never a disappointing dish. The staff was fun and attentive. The whole experience was exactly the kind of luxury that we seek out. Sa Rascassa delivered in every way. We know we will be back, and we can hardly wait.

The rooms are not luxurious but very clean and comfortable, and an excellent value for the price. An outstanding breakfast buffet is included, with fresh-squeezed orange juice and farm-fresh eggs cooked to order most days. The service is very good. Highly recommended! Pictured is the view from the large outdoor space shared by 5 rooms.

Had a wonderful time here. Beautiful location right on the water. Staff all were excellent. Super friendly and charming and professional. Good wifi throughout the hotel and even on the beach. ||I'm sad to be leaving but hope to be back someday.

Lovely setting and very friendly staff - but unfortunately my “secreto” dish was so underwhelming for 26 euros! Three tiny, undercooked, tasteless and unseasoned pieces of meat sitting on basically what looked like a pure of sweet potatoes and apple compote (everything had the same color). I complained about the dish and the staff seemed genuinely interested in my feedback which was good. I didn’t finish the plate and they didn’t offer to bring me anything else. That was ok. But then the bill came and they didn’t remove the dish from the bill which I thought was really cheap and unprofessional from their behalf. I would understand if I finished my plate but I barely touched it. Even the couple next to us (who also complained about a dish) asked me if they removed my dish from the bill and they were completely shocked to know that I had to pay for it because they heard me complain. Things like that make people never want to come back. Come on guys you can do much better!

Absolutely unacceptable experience. We walked into the restaurant — which was completely empty — and politely asked for a table. Without any explanation, we were flat-out refused service. The staff just looked at us and said “no”, as if we weren’t welcome. No reason was given. No “we’re fully booked”, no “we’re closing soon”. Just a cold refusal. Meanwhile, the place remained empty the entire time we stood there. It was very clear: tourists are not welcome here. There’s no excuse for this kind of treatment. If you’re looking for a warm and welcoming place to enjoy a meal, do yourself a favor and go somewhere else.

We stayed in September and the hotel was just magical. Perfect view from the terrace and located along the nicest part of the Cami de Ronda. Oscar and his team really looked after us. They have really thought of everything. |There were only 5 rooms which were simply decorated but have everything you need and it’s very peaceful at night. The restaurant food was outstanding and the setting under the trees with the fairy lights was so lovely. Other restaurants and night life are a short drive away. We visited Begur, Pals, Cadaques and Aigua Blava and always commented on how nice it was to return to our peaceful hotel right by the water, away from the crowds. We had no issues with parking but did feel a car was essential to explore the beautiful surroundings. |A really special hidden gem.

What a hidden gem! Simple luxury in a gorgeous part of the costa brava, tucked away for privacy. The restaurant food was divine and the service warm and friendly. Will always try to book here when we come back. Thanks to Oscar and team for a lovely experience and sharing their little stretch of spain
