Hostel Home was one of the least welcoming—and least safe—places I’ve stayed at, especially as a female traveler. Personal items went missing constantly, labeled food was taken from the fridge, and even food and belongings in the rooms were used or eaten without permission. The beds felt uncomfortable and unsafe, creaky and shaky and privacy was non-existent, especially in the mixed dorm where volunteers rotated between beds, adding to the uneasy environment. The living room was almost unusable as a volunteer slept on the couch constantly, and volunteers dominated much of the common areas like the kitchen, living room, and showers, making me feel more like an outsider than a guest.
The shower and toilet facilities were just okay, but could have been cleaner. A male staff member regularly made female guests uncomfortable, asking invasive questions and making inappropriate jokes, creating an unsettling atmosphere. And despite being in the female dorm later, it still didn’t feel private—male volunteers would enter without even knocking. Overall, this hostel made me feel anything but safe, and I couldn’t relax during my stay.
