La Renaissance

"In the little town of Argentan, the modern lines of the contemporary parallelepiped extension of La Renaissance cannot be missed. Local boy, Arnaud Viel, is at home here, as is his neighbour, philosopher Michel Onfray, who prefaces the restaurant’s menu. Normandy takes pride of place with freshly sourced seafood from Carteret lobster to Veules-les-Roses oysters, without forgetting monkfish from Port-en-Bessin or Créances carrots and foie gras from Auge. Save room for the decadent dessert trolley laden high with miniature delights (not a common occurrence today!) and for the chef’s signature dessert: a sphere of multifaceted textures…" - Michelin Inspector

This review is in two parts. 4.5 star if I could have ticked that!||We had an older room in the building - we have requested it before. The shower was nice, the toilet at an odd angle with a dodgy lid and the door handle between the bathroom and small sitting room came off! The bed was very comfortable. There was some noise from the road outside but it quietened down at night. Reasonable value for what we paid and I am sure we would have been moved had we complained. The little box of chocolates was a lovely touch as was the personalised message. ||The restaurant is superb and the main reason for our visit. We were greeted like old friends..I think this was our 4th visit. And a great stop on route to La Loire valley. Everything from the appetisers that came with the drinks to the main food was exceptional. The "Sommelier with the ponytail" was a lot of fun and gave quite a performance, particularly in the discussion re the live langoustines.. Arnaud also dropped by. We were given some petite fours to take away with us as, after a 5-course menu ,were pretty full. The quality of the food and presentation is excellent and not bad value for money. Breakfast has lots of choice and interesting cakes etc. We were made boiled eggs personally at breakfast.. ||Note. Do make sure they have availability in the restaurant before booking accommodation. ||The accommodation by the side of the swimming pool is much more modern but we are not keen on ground floor accommodation. I intend to return in the Autumn however so maybe will book that next time.

Stayed here for a week with colleagues whilst we visited Haras du Pin. The service and the rooms as well as the quality of food was exceptional. I would definitely come back again. I used the pool, spa, sauna and bathtub. Overall the most relaxing stay Ive ever had. The host always made sure we were taken care of and it felt like home away from home. Very cosy. Breakfast was more than enough and lunch by Arnaud Viel every day was a dream. Michelin star for a reason! It was like eating the stars every day! The cat is adorable and the perfect touch who would greet me every morning and night. She is deaf so do not approach without letting her see you first. Never have I felt emotional leaving a place but here

A return after 7 years, we were pleased to find out that the chef Arnaud Viel had obtained a fully deserved Michelin star. Again, the culinary experience was top. Every part of the 5 cours meal with the accompanying wine was excellent and a real voyage for all the sensors in the mouth. Delicious and culinary surprising as you in our pictures. Miss Viel manage the hotel and the excellent staff who assured that the culinary art work of the chef is explained and it's tast fully appreciated. We will for sure come back to enjoy again your hospitality and kindness ☺️

I was in the area researching my uncle who fought in the final battle of the Falaise Gap around Chambois. This hotel was the perfect spot to stay in the area. The room was spacious! The bathroom was one of the largest of everywhere I stayed on my trip. They have a spa with a whirlpool and outdoor pool. I took advantage of the whirlpool but it was too cold for the pool. The best part, though, of this hotel was the restaurant! The food was the best I had on my whole European trip! I can see why it has earned a Michelin Star! I ate everything even with my food allergies and it was wonderful! You will not regret choosing this hotel to stay. The only thing is that, like most hotels in France, there is no elevator so you had to walk up the stairs. They were nice enough to carry my suitcase up and down at checkin and checkout.

I will keep this short. Arrived soaking wet a group of 4 friends on motorcycles must have been a sight. Greated by a charming young lady who sorted out 2 suitable rooms and organised under cover parking for our bikes. Clean and comfortable rooms. Decided to go to the town for diner don't bother as nowhere open should have dined at the hotel. Ok breakfast only continental but was fine. Highly recommended.

Great place to stay if visiting Normandy. Sensibly priced and fabulous service from the team there. The restaurant is an absolute must. Fabulous food and a great wine list.

A very nice hotel. The restaurant food is absolutely stunning and worthy of a Michelin star as a minimum. I have often been disappointed by the food in France, particularly in Paris. However, this restaurant I would drive a 200km detour to go again. Best food I have had in years.

Jules on reception gave us a very warm and friendly welcome, our room was very comfortable and well equiped and we enjoyed our stay. Our only minus was that the dinner menu was much too fussy and 'cheffy' for us, so we ate out.
