Great food & Service as always. Chef Hastings really knows how to pair flavors together for a true dining experience. This was an anniversary dinner so splurging was required! Started with the Hot & Hot Tomato Salad which is always refreshing and the Short Rib Pappardelle which had a hardy rich broth. Our entrees: Ancho Rubbed Iberico Pork Chop came with an Arepa Cake with blistered peppers that had a very rustic campfire taste that paired great with a Pinot Gregio. The Cobia fish was flakey & buttery & was great paired with a local IPA from Cahaba Brewery recommended from our waitress The desserts were The Torta Della Nonna which I asked the waitress to recommend a dessert wine that wasnt too sweet. The wine she paired it with made the almond ice cream have a black currant wash of flavor at each bite. Excellent! I do not care for dessert wines but I wanted to try it. The Peach Cobbler & Blackberry Ice Cream tasted like a southern comfort dish you would get at your Grandmother's house. When our waitress heard it was our anniversary she sent use a small pour of champagne. It was nice she wanted to help us celebrate. If you want to broaden your palette with the best local ingredients & have a true dining experience. You need to visit!

We celebrated my hubby's birthday at the Chef's Counter, which we really enjoyed seeing the controlled chaos created by an excellent chef & sou chefs! We loved the food (Tomato Salad app, Red Snapper/Scallop entrees, fabulous & inspired cocktails & superior wine selection! The only thing we weren't thrilled with is not being able to see our server, given the nature of bar seating. Still an excellent fine dining experience!

Hastings has outdone himself, this time. So, my girlfriend and I decided to go back to Hot and Hot (our third visit) for our 3 year anniversary on Saturday night- June 22nd. The bar in this city when it comes to fine dining has been set so high, meeting and then exceeding one’s expectations is the arms race- who can do it the best? With Hot and Hot, and with Ovenbird, we’ve learned having a high expectation is both valid and warranted, but we never expected the entirety of the meal to be THIS IMPRESSIVE. Allow me to elaborate and share our experience: As a wine blender, step one for me before ordering anything is the wine choice. We were pleasantly surprised to see extremely good choices by the glass- and with Murder point raw oysters being available, the choice was clear- a glass of Picpoul de pinet each. A perfect pair for oysters and obviously placed on the menu for this reason. And the oysters were PERFECT. Of course how can you go wrong with murder point, Alabama raws… but there’s good, and then there’s these. Imagine an oyster so delicious, nothing else is needed. Ordering our second course and the entrees is where everything went from incredible to extraordinary. A chance for our server, Kevin, to go above and beyond. And he went beyond and then the clouds… and then space. As I was making my selections, I initially thought to pair the duck with blueberry with the tempernillo. It is my favorite varietal of red and I expected it would work well with the duck. However, our incredible server KEVIN quickly acted and instead suggested a different option- an off menu Cab blend. Seeing my skepticism, instead of explaining the cab further, he quickly went and grabbed a splash instead. He didn’t ask. He didn’t hesitate. He just did it. And that’s the single best way to do it- a wine I’ve never had? I’ll need to see for myself. One SMELL of this blend was all I needed to know the perfect pairing he had concocted. The cab- A post and Beam from Napa- had smooth, blueberry notes, shockingly perfect for a duck with a blueberry Gastrique. We chose the Crudo for our second course- again pairing with the picpoul perfectly. Fresh, delicious, and a perfect Segway into our main courses. The duck was quite literally divinity on a plate and the accompanying Pave was cooked so perfectly, I was questioning my sanity. My girlfriend went with the amberjack and we were blown away by the flavor and the texture of the fish. Once again- cooked so perfectly! I wouldn’t usually include an empty plate in the post, but I want to emphasize the notion that if I felt it appropriate to do so, I would have licked the plate. The amberjack was simply stunning and the duck was the best I’ve had in my life. All the while, we received the absolute best service we’ve had in birmingham, and that is saying A TON. Never camping, but extremely attentive, Kevin (and his accompanying S.A) made our anniversary perfect down to the smallest of details. The steps of service were so perfect and spot on, it was even part of the discussion with my girlfriend during the meal. Lastly, dessert. You can see I went with the incredible blueberry Leche- completing the theme built by our server, Kevin. It was so delicious and so perfectly sized, I’m thrilled we chose to order two desserts instead of sharing 1 as we tend to do. But THAT in itself was also due to the meal. The portions are perfectly sized, allowing this to be possible. Instead of being so full and miserable that we couldn’t enjoy dessert and the rest of our night, the amount of food per course was perfectly balanced and portioned. The reality is this: “Hot and Hot” would have a Michelin Star in its name if the damn trail respected Birmingham enough to come here. I can’t stress enough how important it is to try this restaurant and see for yourself how impressive an experience you will have. If you’re a foodie, respect wine and food, and want your mind blown, this is your spot.

More like "Not and Not Fish Club". We tried to eat here, but when we showed up for our reservation, they were sold out of literally HALF the menu. I have never had this happen before. The options were so severely limited that we decided to leave. The wait staff was apologetic, but no manager came to talk to us to explain what had happened, or acknowledge the inconvenience. We weren't expecting a free drink, or future promises, but some acknowledgement of the situation would have been nice. Surprising service at a James Beard award winning restaurant. Ironically, we went to Ovenbird instead, which is under the same management. They were also suffering from a limited menu. The server said it was due to a gulf storm. I'm not sure if that explains why H&HFC was out of BREAD, but at the very least she made attempt to acknowledge the situation. Most bizarre dining situation I've come across in some time. Not inclined to give this one another shot.

Without fail one of the best dining experiences of my life. This place has cemented in my mind the importance of James Beard awards when deciding where to eat in a new area. My wife and I visited Hot and Hot and were greeted with a comfortable upscale experience. Service is performance art and the wait staff are nothing short of perfect. Nate P and Bob (who some may recognize from his time at the also amazing Bottega) were consistent and attentive. I would normally try to describe some of the food but I think the pictures will speak more than a thousand words here. I'd confidently tell anyone that they could order anything here and not come away disappointed.

Our first time at their “new” location in Pepper Place. The atmosphere is aligned with the trendy industrial/loft motif that so many other restaurants in Birmingham seem to emulate. While the new location is certainly upscale and nice enough, I really do miss their old location off Highland Avenue with its eclectic features like glass block, hexagon tiled floor and curved architecture. Two things that haven’t changed by the move to the new location are the excellent service and the amazing food! Following a round of pre-dinner cocktails and an appetizer of their well-loved H&H tomato salad, I had an entree of oven roasted snapper and the hubby had soft shell crab. Everything about our experience at Hot and Hot this evening was superb!

Went to Hot and Hot fish last night and enjoyed several dishes from the menu. It was a very interesting combination of flavors. The biscuits with basil butter are to die for! They are a perfect combination of nice and crispy on the outside with a pillow-flaky inside. Definitely recommend to get one for the table. I ordered the seafood pasta and the scallop on it was cooked to perfection. It was a black ink pasta which was interesting to see since it wasn’t specified. I would say they dish could have used a bit more salt, maybe an extra pinch or two. Nice combination of flavors. The tomato salad was good but not my favorite. If you like cocktails, the Corner of Havana and Torino was very good. The Gold rush could have used a bit more bourbon and less lemon juice. Overall we had a very good experience, our server was attentive and knowledgeable and the food came out in a timely manner. Dining time from being seated to check out 1h40. Expect to spend about $100 per person.

Google
This was my first time here after hearing about it for years. I would say it was good but not great. The service left something to be desired as we sat at the chef’s counter and the couple that came in after us got to eat their appetizers before our order was ever taken. The peppers in my dish had been sitting out since they were cooked and were not even warm. The pork chop was delicious though. My wife got the tomato salad as her entree and she enjoyed it. I’m not opposed to going back but I won’t seek it out.

Yelp
Our experience at Hot and Hot was exceptional. There are a few inconsistent reviews on here, about this place, but take it with a grain of salt. The food is outstanding and fresh. The Hot and Hot Salad is don't your typical salad, but holds such good flavors. My oven roasted salmon was amazing and by far my favorite part of our dinner. My girlfriend got the duck and wow, that was just as good. I do not think you can go wrong with any of their entrees. For dessert we got the hyped Chocolate Soufflé, but I was quite disappointed in the hype. The gentleman to my left asked if they changed the recipe and this was my first time here. Do not let that stop you though! It was still good and allows me to try other items next time. Great service, great atmosphere, and great location. Wonderful job here guys!

Yelp
We came here for appetizers and drinks, mainly because we did not plan early enough to get a dinner reservation. After work, there is plenty of seating, but the restaurant basically functions as reservation only around 7PM. Like many others, I heard amazing things about the tomato stack/salad, and had to come try it during the summer. Although yummy, I can't say I would intentionally come here for the tomato stack, especially when various restaurants now offer their own versions of a tomato salad. The best part was the service. Our waiter was so friendly and helpful throughout the night, and we felt very special.

Yelp
Food and service was awesome. Highly recommend and will definitely be back. You may want to make reservations though.

Yelp
We came here for one a nice date night. It's one of those places we've heard about, but somehow never been to - but I'm sure we'll be back! We sat at the bar and got 'dinner and a show' - it was a fun experience. They definitely stay busy! For an appetizer, we started off with the Beef Tartare, and it was very good. The two different kinds of meat gave different textures, and it was nice to swap it up. My wife and I differed on which we liked best. I got the "Jim's Steak" and she got the Lamb duo. Both were excellent, and I would recommend either to anyone unsure of what to order. Overall, I highly recommend this restaurant and wish we had come here sooner.

Yelp
My best friend and I celebrated her birthday at Hot and Hot and were fortunate to be seated at the Chef's Table. We were so excited to dine here and of course made reservations! We enjoyed many dishes, but especially the famous heirloom tomato salad! Chef Hastings stopped by to speak to us and we all chatted about our cool Instax Polaroid camera we always take with us. I took a Polaroid of Chef and my best friend, and we left it with him. The restaurant was lovely, and we enjoyed all our various dishes, except I did not care for one, I think it was foie gras (however, it may have been bone marrow - I really don't recall), I chalked that up to being an "acquired taste," and we moved on to other things. I have not had an opportunity to return to Hot and Hot since my best friend moved away from Birmingham, but I do highly recommend it! Every detail from servers' uniforms, to plating, to presentation, service, just "soup to nuts" a memorable dining experience! Thanks Chef Hastings and all the Hastings (Idie, Molly, and Jeb)!

Yelp
This it my First time visiting the new location in PepperPlace. I went with my girls for my birthday dinner. The ambiance was nice. Our server Bobby ensured we felt comfortable- he was very personable and knowledgeable of the menu and made recommendations- I even noted his excitement about some of the items. The dishes were well prepared. I enjoyed it all!

Kristi C.

Yelp
It's been too long since we've been to this Birmingham icon but decided to celebrate my daughter's birthday there on Friday night. Couldn't have been a better choice! Food was fantastic, service was perfect and Chef Hastings was gracious enough to spend a little time at our table which made the night quite special! I was so excited they still had the tomato salad on the menu. I the soft shell crab, birthday girl had the snapper, other daughter the grouper and SIL had the steak. It was all amazing. Desert was also incredible. We all enjoyed the food, atmosphere and service. Fantastic experience!

Yelp
What a cute place! Hot and Hot did us super well for an impromptu night out- one of the few nicer places in downtown that had reservations available within a few hours notice. Would have loved to have not been sat in the very back near the exit door, though. The service was top notch- each server and employee was extremely kind and consistently checking up on us, asking if we needed anything. Very well-informed and caring staff. We had the cheese biscuits as an appetizer and they were delectable- soft, fresh, and cheesy, paired very well with the herb butter. Three soft slices of bread were served on the side of the biscuits and while I'd love to believe these were baked in-house, I do feel like they gave off store-bought vibes. The lamb duo had its ups and downs. The gnocchi was PERFECT but only four total pieces come with the dish. The roasted vegetables and puree are absolute perfection, no complaints. The ground lamb ball was by far the best thing- we are lamb lovers and this was for sure the most flavorful kafta-esque dish we've ever had. The lamb chops however left a bit to be desired for. Every bite was a surprise- some were tender and some were insanely chewy. Some were more rare and some more well. Some were so loaded with fat that I had to get the bite down with water as if it were a pill. Don't know if we'll be back, but it was a nice one-time experience.

Ashley D.

Yelp
I was so pleased with our experience at Hot and Hot Fish Club. I had possibly the best cocktails I have ever tasted. Our waiter was engaging and knew the menu well. He guided us through the menu and was knowledgeable. They suggest you order your items together so we both had the saffron fettuccine and short ribs. Then we had the soufflé and carrot cake for dessert. It was excellent and we both left satisfied and grateful!

Yelp
Hot and Hot has been a Birmingham fine dining staple for as long as I can remember and a few years back they moved to a new location and so I got the chance and made it in to see that new location recently and am happy to report that things are as good as, or maybe better than ever. The menu still has the classics for those of you who have been going there for a long time. Cheese boards, their amazing bread service, etc...as well as the top of the line selection of seafood and farm-to-table goodness that they've come to be known for. If you're looking for a sure thing, best in class, award winning experience then don't think twice. That's what they deliver and they have been doing it consistently for a long time. Whatever you order will be amazing. There is no "special thing" on the menu that you need to know about. Every plate that they serve will meet even the highest expectations. Important to note that if you're not feeling the seafood that's ok. The menu is full of things that should satisfy palates across the board ranging from meat and potatoes to bone marrow, carpaccio, and a variety of other options including some truly unique deserts, (get the poached pear). The shortrib would embarrass your grandmother...and any dish with duck is always a win at any Chris Hastings restaurant. Never sleep on the duck. About the new location...it's spacious, it's modern, and it has a significantly better parking experience than the old one. No need to valet, no need to walk a block to get to the place. It's also on the same block as a variety of other dining/drinking/entertainment so you can experience all that in the event that you show up early to your reservation. Reservations are seriously recommended. Make a reservation. Overall this place is a great example of how consistent execution, creative and inspired menus, a freshness-first attitude from the Chef, and a feel for both hospitality in the service and for detail in each dish can amount to something as simple as dinner being transformed into a truly special experience. If you're in the market for an upscale dinner where the chefs are focused on the details and the quality control is standard-setting, this is your spot. Don't think twice just go there.

Madison K.

Yelp
It was a perfect ending for our afternoon in Birmingham. We got reservations for 2 about 3 hours before and I'm not disappointed at all! They ran out of Tile and Grouper so we had Swordfish and Snapper in their place, but that is understandable as it was 8:30. The fish was cooked to excellence and the turnip puree was to die for. We had oysters as an appetizer and they were nothing to write home about. We will be back to sit at the chef's table which looked so fun on a night that dining outside isn't so inciting.

Dennis S.

Yelp
I have visited Hot and Hot in the past and it has always been top notch. I decided to take some people from out of town here recently, who specifically asked to go here. I have not been to Hot and Hot since it has switched locations. The Good: The Hot and Hot tomato salad was an expertly crafted dish. I am not a big fan of tomatoes, so a tower of tomatoes did not sound appetizing to me. This dish was the highlight of the evening. Each bite was different, which is a shout out to how the dish is prepared. Sometimes the aioli shines( one of the best aiolis I have had), sometimes the basil comes through, and some bites the bacon shines. The boudin stuffed quail was the second best dish. the boudin had lots of flavor. As someone who spent 5 years in New Orleans, I would put this boudin against the top boudin I had there. The average: The flour, water, egg dish was very one note. I couldnt taste any hot sauce, and the enriched broth didn't have a defining flavor. The braised ribs were cooked well and tender. The bone in pork chop dish was saved by the arepa and the cilantro crema. The shrimp pappardelle was just your average pasta dish. The below average: The shrimp in the pappardelle was overcooked. This is not something I expect at a restaurant of this caliber. The mango salsa on the pork chop, could have been "insert any fleshy fruit here" salsa. The pork chop had a great crispy outside and was cooked all the way through and tender, but the crust had very little seasoning. With the mango salsa not providing any other elements, the dish fell flat. Overall a very surprising experience, I had at Hot and Hot, as I have had much better meals here in the past.

Nathan B.

Yelp
Fantastic meal and the service was excellent. I had the lamb, my wife had the Barrel Fish. We both had the tomato salad. Everything was amazing in terms of presentation and taste. We sat at the bar so weren't expecting much in the way of service, but the bar staff was friendly, funny, and in the money with their menu knowledge and recommendations. The physical space has a great vibe - brick walls, large windows, candlelight chandelier. Very thoughtful and functional design. If there was any way to improve it would be to have a gluten-free & dairy-free dessert option in the menu. 9.8/10. Highly recommend Hot & Hot if you are in the area.

Debra H.

Yelp
Very nice restaurant in very trendy Pepper Place. Ambience is very on point. Modern industrial chic. We were a bit early, but were seated promptly and drinks were served. Our server was congenial and extremely knowledgeable about the food. He made outstanding recommendations and provided prompt, friendly and professional service. The Chicken fried wagyu steak w/ fingerling garlic potatoes, seasoned greens and buttermilk gravy could easily have been a five star dinner. All that was needed was to cook the potatoes until they were actually done properly and to offer enough gravy to actually taste. The cassoulet was short on duck confit, while the white beans were gritty due to under cooking. Desert was spectacular, much better than the entrees. The jump from very good to outstanding for this restaurant is easy, insure properly cooked meals w/enough food to taste. We will return!

Tarrika E.

Yelp
First visit since the location change. My friends and I enjoyed the ambiance more here. It felt more open, spacious and welcoming. Bobby was our server and he was sensational, spectacular and wonderful. Food was good, he recommended the drink similar to the espresso martini to my friend and she loved it. Great experience, no notes.

Paul C.

Yelp
Hot and Hot is a sophisticated, but not stuffy atmosphere. We received excellent service on Saturday night. Reservations are recommended. Our party of four sat outside on the patio. Despite being a chilly evening we were comfortable as each table has a dedicated propane tower heater. For appetizer, we shared the Shrimp Crepinette. I wasn't sure what to expect, and the disc shaped patty didn't resemble a shrimp. However, the flavor was very tasty. And, it was served on the best grits I have ever tasted. I enjoyed the Ribeye for my dinner. It was a beautifully tall cut of steak that looked more like a fillet. The steak was prepared medium-rare, and had a crispy seared outside, and a pink center. The crust seemed to be a simple salt and pepper sprinkling that enhanced the flavor of the cut. The steak was good, but I was expecting a little more fat marbling in it. The steak is served with Buttermilk Sauce Fingerling Potatoes, Collard Greens and Fried Chicken Skins. I really enjoyed the potatoes and collards, and thought they were the perfect combination for the steak. The Fried Chicken Skin were something unique, and I wasn't sure what they were until looking back at the menu. I thought they were just okay. I also tried the Paper Plane signature cocktail. It was very tangy. Overall a very good experience and I would recommend.

Kathryn S.

Yelp
Just a few nights left for the famous tomato salad so a friend and I sat at the chef's table and watched them Prepare lots of food. We also split the seafood risotto and chocolate soufflé. Divine! Chris Hastings even stopped by to say hello. Place was packed on a Wednesday night.

Helen H.

Yelp
Had dinner with family and loved the experience so much. I started with a cocktail that was delicious, followed by an appetizer of oysters. The oysters were so tasty and so far Donald, our waiter, was very attentive and knowledgeable. I decided to try the noodle bowl and was not disappointed. The seafood in the bowl was seasoned and prepared perfectly. The broth was so yummy it could have stood on its own. I love the seating choices, (chef's counter, bar, table) the decor, the location, and the service. I love this place!

Jaydip D.

Yelp
We had great expectations of this place as I had dined here about five years earlier but we were extremely disappointed. Not only we had to wait for 45 minutes for a seat, they had run out of some of their main dishes although the menu was small. On top of this they failed to notify us of items cooked in shellfish oil and we had told them that we had shellfish allergy. Additionally they charge 3% for using a credit card... Who does that!! Definitely not coming back here again. Not sure what the hype was about

J M.

Yelp
Don't hesitate! Book your reservation for a gastronomic delight! The farm-to-table concept was on full display with a fried okra and tomato salad. Our scallop dish was most unusual. Perfectly cooked scallops served over tomatoes, cucumber and avocado with bacon vinaigrette and vidalia onion puree and a red plum puree. Finished our meal with peach cobbler with blackberry ice cream.

Janis T.

Yelp
Hot and Hot is one of my all time favorite places in Bham and that's saying a lot because there are many to choose from. It's a James Beard award-winning restaurant and it's easy to see why. The menu options are creative and consistently wonderful. The service is always on point with every need anticipated without hovering. The decor is understated but elegant and it feels comfortable. I also appreciate that there's never a fuss about separate checks. Don't skip dessert because they have some amazing offerings. This is a great place to reconnect with friends, celebrate a special occasion or just enjoy a wonderful meal. Don't forget the reservation and know that Chef likes everyone present before ordering so they properly orchestrate the meal.

Dana H.

Yelp
We recently celebrated my husband's birthday at Hot & Hot Fish Club. We enjoyed every moment there. The space is airy, modern, welcoming, and comfortable. The menu had so many tempting choices. I had the legendary Heirloom Tomato Salad as a starter and my husband selected an orecchiette and shrimp dish. Both were delicious. Each of us selected a main course of grilled halibut which was perfection. The highlight of the meal was an incredible house-made peach and blackberry cobbler topped with a generous scoop of blackberry ice cream. Heavenly! Every bite of the food lived up to the reputation one knows and expects from this local treasure of a restaurant. This is one of the best restaurants in Birmingham and has been for many years. The vibe is relaxed, casual, and welcoming. Yet, the service is like a well-oiled machine. Everything is smooth, consistent, and satisfying.

Jeanine F.

Yelp
I've dined here twice, once in the winter and once in the spring. It's a great space and they're very accommodating, but in my opinion the dishes aren't as elevated or tasty as I'd expect them to be for the prices they charge. Personal preference, I'd recommend Automatic Seafood instead.

Carrie L.

Yelp
My husband and I had dinner here and sat at the bar. The restaurant is precious. Love the open kitchen that allows you to see and hear the cooks prepping and preparing your food. We were one of seven couples at the bar. There were 2 bartenders and they were getting slammed. There was a couple at the end of the bar that was well known to many and they received the majority of the service. We had to wait quite a while to place drink orders, order food, request for more water, and tab out. The other couples felt the same way, as we watched the couple on the end have a top notch experience. We ordered the oysters, Vidalia salad, scallops, and duck. The food was delicious! It was fresh, flavorful, and everything was served in good portions.

Collin C.

Yelp
Service was sub par. Food was good, but not great. It was not busy, but could not get anyone to give us any attention.

Mikey G.

Yelp
Went here to celebrate my birthday and was just absolutely blown away. The staff was just incredibly friendly, the atmosphere was super lovely- and the food is some of the best in Birmingham. My biggest complaint is that I haven't visited here much sooner, and the risotto rice completely destroyed anything I've ever personally cooked, so now I don't know if I will ever be able to cook it again.

Cheryl M.

Yelp
I was super excited to come here for dinner to celebrate our anniversary. It's really nice inside and has a nice outdoor seating area. It is noisy inside so I don't think it would be great if you want a romantic dinner. At the advice of the table next to us, we ordered the cheese biscuits. This is two large biscuits with butter. They were pretty tasty. I'm not really a fan of biscuits so I probably would not order these again but if you like cheese biscuits you will probably like them. For dinner I got the boullibaise. It was a couple pieces of fish, 1 clam, 2 shrimp, and mussels. I love mussels and will often get them as a main dish. These mussels were the most pathetic mussels I have ever seen. They had a normal sized shell but the mussel itself was teeny tiny. I've never seen any so small. Frankly, I'm surprised the chef would even serve them. The broth was bland and even if it was tasty, the bread that came with it was a hard piece of toast that would not have been good for soaking it up. So this dish was disappointing to say the least. Hubs ordered the red snapper. I tasted it and it was really good. He seemed to enjoy it. I probably should have gotten that. I had a blood orange martini to drink. It was pretty good. I ordered a second one but I finished my meal before it arrived so I didn't get to have it. We were not charged for it. I don't know if we will come here again but if I so, I will order something else and hope for a better experience.

Yelp
Great location. I love that bulging! Unfortunately, Hot and Hot confirms to be a disappointment on my book. At the former location I could not stand the noice and the crunched space. The new location is instead great. What went wrong this time was the food. My main dish was a perfectly cooked delicious grouper, that came with an overpowering oily sauce that was way too much for that delicious chunk of fish. My wife's dish was very good and very creative. Shrimp stuffed in a chicken roll. Great creation! What I could not stand was having a $12 gazpacho appetizer that had absolutely no taste whatsoever, which was made out of 1 chopped shrimp. 1 shrimp! $12! No taste. The Tamale appetizer was also nothing tastier than those you buy at whole foods frozen. Another $15. Also incomprehensible is charging for soda refills. Never seen that before! Service was mixed. The attending waiter was nice and professional. The assistant was so unprofessional. He did not respond to our salute. He literally threw a fresh knife on the middle of the table. Did not clean a fur spill he made. He served us the wrong dishes. No whatsoever care. The place is great for a special night out bcz of the ambience. I will hardly go back. Way too expensive for what you get. Of the $150 for two, what I minded the most was the $3 for the soda refill. Yelpers have much better options in B'ham. But this is just not a place meant for Yelpers!

Yelp
Good food, slow but friendly service, but more than anything very overpriced. I know restaurants have their prices and you can expect high pricing at a nice place, but this seemed expensive for what you got. Our meal was $150 after tip and that's with only two entrees, bread, and 1 cocktail. We started with the bread - 2 pieces for $8! They were very tasty, but seems wild to charge that much for two biscuits even if they were large. I did love the flavor, and did love the butter, but wow on the price. And this is coming from a New Yorker used to New York prices. My dad got a steak and it did look good, and my mom and I split the grouper, mainly because by Thursday night they were out of the daily specials, snapper and halibut. It was tasty and I did like the accompaniments but nothing out of this world. Again, overpriced. Our server was nice but soooo slow. They might be understaffed. The best part here was the hostess though who was super sweet.

Yelp
Had not been to Hot and Hot in several years. This may have been the last time. Not sure they will be an options for others looking out to next year. Too many better places with a better vibe and taste. Menu looked wonderful at first glance. Everyone had trouble deciding what to get. now we know why. All four of the entrees were MEH and most of all lacked flavor. My duck was small and uneventful. both fish dishes were overcooked and bland. chicken fried steak was the better of the 4 entrees. the quail was very good and the tartar was good. drinks were small and wait for table was 15 minutes after reservation time. scene was weak. this was a friday night at 715. next stop will be another choice. disappointed Hastings place has fallen out of top picks in this restaurant heavy city "chicken Fried Steak"Red SnapperWagyu Beef Tartare

Yelp
Hunter and Tyler were excellent. I had a great time. The only feedback is don't order the tuna. It is served with the fatty tissue you see on chicken that rips the meat apart? Get the snapper instead. Way better choice. Beet salad was nice too. Perfect crunch.

Yelp
The food was great; but the service was excellent. I was in town for business and dined alone. I decided to sit at the bar for dinner. Destiny and Tyler were the bartenders and their service was bar none. Top notch service and food.

Yelp
What I Ordered. . . Opening Act: Flour, Water, Egg. The Big Show: Braised Lamb Shank. Closing Act: Raspberry Bread Pudding. Flour, Water, Egg. This was the best out of the three dishes listed above. The pork was extremely tender. The broth had a very rich flavor profile. I really liked the combination of pork, mushrooms, greens, cheese, and pasta soaked in the broth. All soft textures with different flavors unified by the broth. If this was simply a pasta dish, then a lot of these elements might feel "thrown in." However, in this case, the broth enhanced the taste of all these individual elements. Braised Lamb Shank. This was just an impressive piece of meat. Very tender and flavorful. The shank was slightly dry in some places, but that was ok since it was a great opportunity to just taste the good flavor of the meat itself and not just the flavor of the fat. The bed of wild rice, persimmon, and kohlrabi was very unique. And bonus - there was some slightly pickled eggplant (which I love) in there too. Raspberry Bread Pudding. Warm, comforting, sweet, and tart. What made this bread pudding shine for me was the tartness of the raspberry sauce. The juxtaposition of the sweetness of the bread pudding and tartness of the glaze will make this bread pudding memorable for me. Overall, a great experience! Would have been even better if I could have joined the fish club!

Yelp
If you know, you know! Chef Hastings is amazing and Hot and Hot does not disappoint! I have eaten at his other restaurant OvenBird and couldn't wait to try this one. We went with a group of seven and the wait staff was 100! Knowledgeable, great with ingredient descriptions and wine recommendations. It is located in Pepper Place and it is so industrial chic. Large open restaurant and really beautiful outdoor dining as well. We ordered several table appetizers and desserts. There was not one complaint. Appetizers: -Bone Marrow (Short Rib, Mushroom Risotto and Rich Jus) -Hot and Hot Seafood Spring Rolls served with Coconut Curry Sauce -Assorted Southern Cheeses and Charcuterie Plate (House Pickled Vegetables, House Mustard and Seasonal Accoutrements) -Cheese biscuits with basil butter Main: Duo of Duck (Sweet Potato Hash, Baby Carrots, Turnips and Rich Jus) *The best duck I've eaten to date. Not greasy. Perfectly cooked and paired with the perfect assortment as listed above. The waiter recommended the following wine and I wish I would have had two glasses. Desserts (we literally tried them all): -Elton's Chocolate Soufflé (Crème Anglaise and Whipped Cream) -White Chocolate and Raspberry Bread Pudding (Raspberry Coulis and Whipped Cream) -Carrot Cake (Shortbread Sable and Butter Pecan Ice Cream) -Apple Crisp (Caramel, Brown Sugar Crumble and Whipped Cream) Top Picks: ~Hot and Hot Seafood Spring Rolls served with Coconut Curry Sauce *the most delicious and surprising appetizer I've ever eaten ~Duo Duck (see above) ~ White Chocolate and Raspberry Bread Pudding (Raspberry Coulis and Whipped Cream) *light and refreshing and a unique option ~Cocktail: A Change of Season If you only have time for one restaurant in Birmingham, pick Hot and Hot!

Yelp
Great dinner experience at Hot & Hot. Was there for a business dinner with a fairly large party of 8, seated in the back. Service was very good. We were seated promptly and the waiter was very attentive, knowledgeable, but not overbearing. Had cocktails, a variety of appetizers that the group split - standouts were the cauliflower, the fried boudin, and the oysters! My entree the grouper; it was fantastic. We ordered a sampler of desserts and everything I tried was delicious, including the carrot cake which I would not normally have ordered. I really love the new location at Pepper Place. The atmosphere was great. Too cold for outdoor seating - and our group was probably too big - but I think I'd really enjoy that on a nice evening.

Yelp
So delicious and excellent service! We split 4 appetizers between 3 ladies and it was the perfect amount of food before hitting the town!

Yelp
We are here for our anniversary dinner and was blown away not only by the delicious food but by the service. I believe our waiter was Bobby and we couldn't have asked for better service. The whole dinner was so smooth and flawless I wish I could give more than 5 stars. We will be back very soon!!!

Yelp
Went here for a romantic anniversary meal and was NOT disappointed! Everything you hear about Hot and Hot is true. A Birmingham fine dining staple, this lovely restaurant is perfect for a big evening out. We started with the charcuterie and cheese plate. I wish the portions had been a bit larger, but everything was delicious. For our entrees, I had the pan seared scallops and he had the Duck. My scallops, served in a bed of creamy risotto, my perfectly cooked scallops were seared on the outside and just the right amount of doneness within. His duck was served on the rarer side, and was delicious as well. For dessert we shared a chocolate soufflé. Our waiter was attentive and wonderful. Amazing meal!

Yelp
Service trumps all. A friend and I recently visited Hot & Hot for a 7:00 dinner reservation mid-week. When we arrived, we were notified that our table was not ready as the previous guests decided to stay for dessert. Completely out of our control, but I was quite irritated at their practice to fully pack the restaurant without considering guests with reservations. We were able to be seated about 20 minutes later. In the grand scheme of things, it wasn't a terrible wait... but it was a wait. The unexpected flip side to this delay was the most impeccable service. The staff doted on us the entire night -- from appetizers, wine, and dessert on the house to consistent (but not overly persistent) check-ins -- they certainly made up for the initial delay. The food was good; not "the best I've ever had." I'm also not the greatest fan of the ambiance. It's an open space and there's not much privacy between tables. It's not the best option for a one on one conversation, but I would suggest it for larger group dinners. In all, the food is good. The service is what sets this place apart.

Yelp
We visited Hot and Hot for the first time last night for my bf birthday. We were greeted immediately with a smile from the host. As she was seating us I noticed several more smiling faces around the room. The atmosphere caught my attention as well. It felt very relaxing and fancy at the same time! Our server, Don, greeted us shortly after we sat down and offered his assistance in anything we needed regarding the menu and our visit. You could tell he loved his job and was so happy we were there! He was exceptional! The food was phenomenal. Man, probably the best meal I have ever had! Through out our entire time there, we felt extremely well taken care of! One of the best dining experiences I've ever had! I can not wait to come back! I am going to tell everyone I know they need to visit Hot and Hot! Thank you all so very much!

Yelp
Food was cold. Very disappointed in the service. Zero ambiance. Our party was looking forward to trying this legendary restaurant but overall we will not be coming back.

Yelp
Best tasting and curated menu I've ever experienced. Great atmosphere, friendly knowledgable staff. Great dinner! Will definitely be back.

Yelp
The food left a lot to be desired. Tomato salad was bland and shrimp on top was completely unseasoned. Drinks were good but dessert was lacking actual sweetness

Nîmes G.

Yelp
I'm sorry Chris, my husband compared your food to captain Ds but to be fair - he really loves captain D's!!! You didn't laugh at his joke but did recommend the tomato salad and he hasn't stopped eating tomatoes since. So thank you for expanding his palate, dates have been much more fun since. I got the wagyu salad but I felt like I would have preferred them separately next time as they were both enjoyable but took each other's limelight in differing bites. Still not over the tomato salad, myself as you can never go wrong with fresh veggies that are perfectly paired with their dressing.

Yelp
Don't get the duck. Maybe it was a new guy who had never cooked duck breast before, completely un-rendered, skin was as close to burnt as you can possibly get and lifeless. Ordered medium rare, came out utterly well done on skin side and medium-well on the underside - cooked completely unevenly. If I would've prepared that and served it, I would've been humiliated, much less at the establishment of a James Beard winner. I don't play this card a lot, but I'm a chef in the industry as well here on vacation, drove an hour to get here and could not have left more disappointed. I should have sent it back upon just seeing the hack job done on the skin, but I'm not that type of person. Everyone has off nights and I get that, but I won't be back. Bread service was a joke, 4 pieces of bread and 2 oz. of butter, at best, for a table of 5. And lastly, for an establishment to not offer free refills, feel free to communicate that to a table with 3 small children. It is wildly obvious that this restaurant is hostile to guests who have children, absolutely no items list on the menu for them, and upon asking the server the only option available is a basic butter pasta, that my children hated no less. If this is a James Beard restaurant, then mine must be Michelin.

Yelp
We sat at the chefs counter and loved the experience seeing how the food is prepared and plated. Everything taste amazing and the service was incredible.

Yelp
One of my favorite places. Normally, a five star experience, but my latest visit was just so-so. The steak I had was disappointing. Not a good cut (marbling minimal) not well-trimmed. Had the carrot cake for dessert. Good, but not too special. Service was great though. COVID - really good. Sustainability - environmentally good. Business wise, the reduced volumes can't be good for a business that is this labor intensive.

Yelp
This was my first time dining at Hot and Hot in years, and second time total. The decor is nice and home-y. As expected, the service was great. We began with a charcuterie board which was large and had an array of meats and cheeses along with other accompaniments. Next, butternut squash soup which was delicious! For dinner I had scallops prepared with a purée celery sauce and au jus. Very good. It was also served with a conservative portion of Swiss shard and apples that I would have liked a little more of. For dessert, the chocolate soufflé which was delicious and just sweet enough. The table had two bottles of wine throughout the evening. I believe the wine list may be out-of-date because with each bottle ordered, a red and a champagne, the first choice was not available. But the table enjoyed the selections that were ultimately purchased. Overall, a great dining experience! All of the food was delicious and exceeded my expectations.
