My third time here. Always a great experience! The food was tasty and portions are large! Nai, our waitress, was very helpful. It was my birthday and they set up party favors and gave me a free dessert! It felt like home! Highly recommend.

The worst Thanksgiving EVER!! I wish I can get my $150 back but you get what you paid for! Store bought food and not homemade soul food. 1. Stuffing-stove top with no seasoning and the crumbles was still hard 2. Fried Turkey- not cleaned correctly, not seasoned, VERY DRY!! 3. Mac and Cheese—-exactly what I typed differently not BAKED MAC & Cheese. Extremely dry and the cheese wiz was salty 4. Yams (lol) no seasoning whatsoever just large chunks out the can differently not fresh sweet potatoes 5. Cake- extremely dry 6. Cranberry- not homemade straight out the can 7. The rolls was cold and stale 8. Mashed Potatoes while the instant potatoes were extremely salty and watery! Went straight in the trash! I had high hopes because I visited the restaurant over 3 times but this was a complete disaster! No love or effort was given!

Visted HBSSC this morning, nothing less than Amazing. Was not aware that we needed reservations for Brunch. However we were blessed to get a seating for two. Our server Sierra was top notch. Sierra created us with a smile and enthusiasm. The atmosphere was very pleasant. Now down to the food. The servings are not for the weak. Sierra warned that they were big, big. We ordered the Catfish-grits and potatoes, Chicken and waffles, Strawberry lemonade, OJ, Side of Eggs Turkey Bacon, side of grits and the Banana pudding pancakes with a side of milk. Needless to say almost all of it went home. I did ask Sierra if anyone has ever completed the meal at a sitting, she laughed and said No. Its a lot. Very good. The service provided was highly professional, courteous, and friendly, resulting in a positive experience. We will return and make sure we make reservations if its a Sunday.

My husband took me here for birthday this evening. My husband had to call to let them know we will be a few minutes late because we ran into a traffic jam on 295. We were coming from north jersey/central area. The restaurant wasn't crowded. There was small group celebrating their father's birthday. We were seated and placed our order right away. We ordered a lot food. We knew we was going to take some food home with us and have for 2-3 days. We just sampled. We ordered three appetizers and two entrees and dessert to take home. We sat for maybe 5-10 minutes and the fried chicken wings came out and the caribbean egg rolls and seafood mac and cheese. The chicken wings were a tad salty and three pieces were a little burnt between the flat part and tip. Not a big deal; we didn't complain about that. A few minutes later my husband receives his turkey wings over rice and I received the chili salmon over yellow rice. My chili salmon was overcooked/burnt. It was burnt at the top and skin burnt at the bottom. I removed the skin and some of the salmon stuck to the skin as I removed it. I didn't eat that part. I tasted the salmon and it was dry, too burnt and rice had too much of the chili garlic sauce over it, which i didn't like. I couldn't continue to eat it. I told our waitress the issue and she said we would have to pay for another dish and they will take my dish away. I told her when we was here for brunch and they served us burnt pancakes, they replaced it at no charge. I said I thought they wanted us to let them know if we had any issues with our food, and they will take care of it. She went to get, who i assumed to be the manager. His attitude rubbed me the wrong way when I explained to him my issue and he said I should have told them I didn't want sauce over the rice. I said, this was my first time ordering it; how was i suppose to know that. I asked for no extra sauce on the rice. He said he will just replace one piece of salmon and will not give me anymore rice. He said I ate half the salmon. Remember, I said, some of the salmon stuck to the skin. I didn't eat a lot of it. My husband told him to forget it and the man walked away. I was totally disgusted by his bad attitude and I lost my appetite. As he started to walk away, my husband said that's it, we're leaving. He said we can start packing up everything. He said, he didn't even like his turkey wings. The skin wasn't soft he said; meat not really tender. He said they just poured gravy over the wings. It wasn't cooked in gravy. We wasn't even there long. We packed up appetizers and the $30 chili salmon, we told our waitress she can throw away along with the sweet potatoes we both asked for as a side. We didn't like at all. My birthday was ruined. We regretted ordering desserts from them. My husband said he shouldn't have gave anymore of his money. He felt bad that I barely ate my entrée and said he was taking me somewhere else to get an entrée. I didn't want him to do that but he said it was my birthday and he wanted to do that for me. He regretted taking me here. So, we went to our favorite Italian restaurant afterwards and ordered me an entrée and took it back home. We will never go back to this establishment again. Too many stipulations, like reservations and the amount of time you have to eat. You have to keep looking at your watch. I was telling a lot of people to give them a try. Now, i regret it. We should have went with our first instinct and not go here. I wish them the best but never again.

Excellent experience. I went after a conversation about restaurants in the barbershop. Of all those discussed there was 100% agreement their food was delicious. I had to try it asap. It was hard to find but check cashing place before entrance to Betsy Ross bridge was the landmark. I missed it but decided it would be worth it to go back around and it was. Short wait for one of the best soul food meal I've had out, fried flounder, mac and cheese, cabbage, cornbread, and 7 up pound cake. . Hot, well seasoned, huge portions, great ambiance. Treat yourself. Only complaint given at barbershop was inconsistency in being open. Fortunately I didn't run into that. It is well worth it. For those looking for a quality dining experience and who want to support a Black owned business you can't go wrong. Price might seem hefty but portions more than make up for it.

THEE best in brunch!!! The food was amazing (and my husband is a chef)! We enjoyed the food, the service, the atmosphere! Everything was a 10! We went for Father’s Day 2025 and my husband said it was the best one yet!!!

My family and I visited this "restaurant" to celebrate my mother's birthday. It was a horrible experience overall from beginning to end... From having to put a deposit down for every five ppl in your party, to pre-ordering your food, to having to have a confirmation that your reservation was accepted... Even though we pre-ordered our food, it still took 45 minutes for all of our food to come out, note that the first plate was served within 10 minutes of us sitting down, and we're still told that the 90 minute table limit is in effect. The older lady in the front rolled her eyes and turned her head away from me as if she was done talking to me when I mentioned that my party did not have enough time to eat. I explained in the email for the original reservation that we were celebrating a birthday and would have a birthday cake and was still rushed out. I feel like my family and I were rushed during a celebration and not given enough time to eat even though the food came out literally one plate at a time over the course of 45 mins... I also disliked that I was not told until the end that the tip had to be paid in cash, which the waitress separated and took her money first before settling the bill.. This is not a place I would suggest if you have a large party, actually I would not suggest this place at all due to the treatment and poor customer service and lack of planning on their part. The food was ok, but was priced super high for a take out spot that basically has a little bit of seating on the side... Oh, and having a dj in such a small space makes you feel like you have to yell to speak with the person next to you, because the music is way too loud for a Sunday morning brunch. None the less, I am so disappointed with my experience at this place and warn anyone who plans on going to be prepared for any nonsense that may come your way.

We had a wonderful first experience eating tonight at Hot Butter Soul! The food was delicious, huge portions and reasonably priced, the friendly service was great, the aviance of the decor (even in the restroom) was beautiful and the music was jamming! We will definitely be back and bring more friends!

The customer service is terrible. My daughter and I wanted to try this place. Unfortunately weren't able to due the change of time for reservations which is not stated on their website. Scheduled reservation on website no response only to call and the time to make a reservation changed without notice and without a response to the email. I won't attempt to go again the reservation was made online at 11:00 am. Called regarding the reservation and was told the time changed from 6:30 pm last reservation to 6:15 pm. Information regarding reservation cut off times needs to be posted.

Not sure I forgot to review this place. Today, I had my second brunch experience at HBSSC. During my first brunch I tried the Rich Auntie's Breakfast, which included catfish, grits (of your choice) or potatoes, eggs, and biscuits. My partner had an omelette. We had a pleasant conversation until our food arrived. We were pleasantly surprised when our food arrived. WE HAD SO MUCH FOOD!! The portions are EXTREMELY generous. The catfish was fresh, nicely seasoned and coated. I wasn't a fan of the eggs and the cajun grits were just okay. I'm very particular about my eggs and grits. So, I try not to focus on them since they are only "sides." Today, I gave the chicken and waffles a go and my grandma had the Rich Auntie's breakfast. Our food took maybe 20/25 ish minutes to arrive. Still, not a bad wait. AGAIN, when I say my plate was PACKED with food, I mean it was completely full. I had a leg, 3 wings, and a chicken thigh WITH two french vanilla waffles. The chicken was so seasoned. It was moist, crispy and truly delicious. My grandma enjoyed her catfish and cheesy grits. She wasn't a fan of the eggs and her biscuits were "doughy." Overall, we both felt like today was a nice brunch. Now that I have brunched twice, I would like to grab a dinner reservation to see if the dinner is just as good as the brunch. Stay tuned....

OMG!!! I found this place on line and it was amazing. The service was good but the food is what took the cake. We all had something different. But the food was good tasty flavorful and the portions were ALOT I had noticed people taking the food out but it wasn't because it was not good. It was because it was so much to eat in one setting. Y'all these portions were huge. The ambiance was cute but comfortable. Do I recommend this place HELL YEAH it was .

All the food was so good!!! Their hours are very specific and brunch is reservation only - the dinner items and brunch items are when I went two different times. I don't eat soul food often but the food was well worth the price. Their portions are also HUGE. made 2-3 more meals out of the leftovers. The Caribbean rolls had a throw up smell after I took it home so I threw them out - but perhaps they just went bad. They were fine at the restaurant! Would definitely return again to taste other menu items!

Let me start by saying I had high hopes. Black-owned, soul food, catchy name--I was ready to throw my coins and my calories into supporting this place. But baby, let me tell you: this wasn't a hot butter supper. This was a room temperature microwave struggle plate from 2009. The moment I walked in, I knew I had messed up. The vibe was giving "you bothering us" not "welcome in." The girl at the counter looked like I interrupted her nap and her situationship at the same time. No greeting, no smile--just attitude like I personally insulted her auntie. The menu was taped to the wall like they just decided what they cook based on whatever fell out of a Sysco truck that day. I ordered oxtails, mac and cheese, and collards. I got sadness, confusion, and a stomach ache. The oxtails were dry and gave more bone than meat--like a Flintstones chew toy. The mac and cheese? Child... it tasted like someone made it while arguing on FaceTime and forgot the cheese. And the collards? They were bitter, angry, and clearly had unresolved trauma. Not a turkey neck in sight. Just pain in a Styrofoam container. Now let's talk about the owner. The main character in this tragic opera. Loud, rude, and clearly thinks running a restaurant is just about posting selfies in an apron. Instead of fixing the mess, they were too busy arguing with customers and gaslighting people on Instagram like they were on a bad season of Real Housewives of Pennsauken. I watched them roll their eyes at an elderly woman asking for her order--a senior citizen. Lord, forgive me for what I wanted to say out loud. It honestly breaks my heart because I want to support Black businesses, but this is not the one. The food is bad, the vibes are worse, and the only thing seasoned in this place is the drama. This ain't entrepreneurship, it's embarrassment. A disgrace to the culture. Soul food with no soul. The ancestors did not fry chicken on cast iron skillets for this.

3rd update The fried fish here has never missed. I wanted some, but the last time I got a platter I did not like that yams, mac & cheese nor the peach cobbler. The yams and cobbler had too much corn starch in it. That being said I was craving the fried whiting and it comes with two sides. So I said you know what, I'll get it but I'll just try different sides. I struggled because I just love my fried fish with yams and Mac & cheese. Either way we ordered and as always they give you a lot of food when you get a platter. This time I got the fish with corn pudding and the greens. It was delicious. Not the corn pudding I'm used to, but still very tasty. The greens were also on point. My husband got the cabbage and mac & cheese with his platter and that also was very good. The owner is very nice and the customer service is always good so I wish this place nothing but the best. I don't know if there were any changes to the yams and cobbler but what we got this time we enjoyed. We ate it for two days because it was so much food.

Brought my daughter in to get lunch , heard about the place through social media , food was good , proportions were plentiful the overall experience was good , heard their Brunch is a different experience, so have to go back and try it , but I definitely have recommended this restaurant, and will continue to..........

Food was plentiful and delicious. Definitely enough food to share, if that's your thing. DJ played cool music, set the vibe for brunch!

This is the best brunch I ever had. I have been to plenty of brunch spots here in the USA and other countries and this is the best. They load you up with great food and it all tastes good. My family and I had brunch on Sunday. When we pulled in the parking lot, we could hear the music from outside. I thought we were at the club. There was a DJ in the corner playing hip hop and R&B. The music was so loud we could not have a conversation at the table. My parents are in their 70s and 80s and had very little conversation because of they could not hear. Not what I was expecting on a Sunday. The music needs to be turned down and the selection of music needs to be family appropriate. I had my 11 year old and there was a birthday party behind us with two girls maybe 6 and 8 years old seated. I don't want to hear about hands touching a$$e$ while I'm eating. My second issue was the server asking me if I wanted my change after I paid the bill. Our bill was $185 with $28 tip included. I waited 4-5 minutes and then she came over asked me if I wanted my $15 change. She returned about 10 minutes later. I would have considered leaving extra but I was annoyed. Turn down the volume of the music and train servers to not to ask customers if they want their change. If they want you to have it, they will leave it or tell you to keep it. Other than those issues, the food was great.

The food was delicious and perfectly seasoned!! The service was excellent. I'm definitely a New Customer!! I give them a 12 out of 10. They did not disappoint!!

I have been eager to try this place, and I must say, they did not disappoint. The food and its (huge) portions were fulfilling. Our waitress was super nice, and every bite of our food was delicious. We walked in to eat right when they opened, and there were multiple people doing the same. So we will definitely schedule a reservation next time to make sure we have a table. I heard it's the best way to go. The background music is also comforting. Thank you for the good experience.

I drove an hour from Northern Ocean Co. to Pennsauken only to be told they were reservation only by smug host. Back in September, I saw a TikTok about HBSSC, so I made a reservation (for convenience sake) and my friend and I are there. The food was delicious, the ambiance was great our server was adorable... all around lovely experience. The only thing that I found problematic was you can't leave a tip on credit card for your server, so we had to scramble for cash. Fast forward to February 23, 2025: I made pretty last minute plans to meet friends for brunch, recommended we got to HBSSC and everyone agreed. On their website, there was a reservation pop-up and when I clicked on it, they were no openings until Wednesday, but I figured it's a restaurant and there was nothing SAYING RESERVATIONS REQUIRED, so I left my house and drove an hour to get there. Got there, went in with my one friend and looked around for my other friends when the host said, 'can I help you?' He wasn't nice or polite about it, but I chalked this up to my walking in and not acknowledging him initially because I was so focused on looking for my friends. At that point, I asked for a table for four and he smugly said 'no, it's reservation only.' I looked at him, said 'oh, ok', turned around and left pissed more by his energy than anything. I ended up going to Bahama Breeze where we all enjoyed our meals and drinks and spent way less money than we would have there. There are too many restaurants in the area for that type of service. Period.

Very disappointed to have to write this for a black owned business but here we are. Like other reviews, the reservation process is terrible. Put clear instructions or just don't have your business listed on open table at all. I've never heard of having to get a reservation confirmation with open table. We too had people coming from out of state to try this restaurant. While I get it seems they are trying to offer a different type of dining experience, the location doesn't match the requirements for what a patron has to go through for a reservation. It's on the edge of a highway and very easy to miss and the parking it's super limited. Whoever the owner is, get rid of the guy at your hostess stand. He is rude and very dismissive. When I arrived I had no idea about the reservation policy I only had a screenshot from my sister with the time and number of people. He was completely dismissive saying "you did it wrong that's a request you have to send an email asking for a reservation." Ew. I'm standing there confused because I didn't make the reservation- I'm sorry reservation request- I was just a member of the party coming in. So I believe it may have been the owner who came out to see what was going on. The guy goes "do you see the name here for party of 6??" asking the owner and I'm looking at him like what is this guys problem. I wasn't arguing him or anything for him to have that nasty attitude I literally just came in with the name and number of people assuming we had a reservation, that's all. The owner seemed nice and maybe would have been accommodating if they had the table place but I would never ever go back just because of that guys attitude. If you guys don't get rid of him and reevaluate your reservation operations, your business will not be around much longer. Especially if this same issue makes its way to social media.

When I saw this spot open up, I was eager to try. Since it's reservation only, I made my reservation a couple weeks in advance. What was strange is that when you make a reservation online, it doesn't provide a confirmation or any contact info to confirm that it was received. I went anyways only to arrive to this place at my reserved time and was told that the owner didn't confirm my reservation which is done the previous night. I asked the hostess to look it up and they saw that I had made an inquiry for a reservation but it was somehow on me to confirm which was not in my control. They wouldn't accommodate us for my party of 4 who drove from other states to get here. That was very unprofessional and they don't have to worry about getting my business.

So I made an online reservation on Friday 5/16/2025. Got the confirmation the next day. Made my reservation for Sunday 5/18/2025. When we got there the older gentleman in the front was mean and nasty to us. Saying this is a private event..did you not see the sign? Granite if I made an online reservation and got the confirmation email per your establishment protocol. Why would I be looking for a sign? He proceeded on talking down to us as we left. I wasn't going to say anything, but this level of unprofessionalism for an establishment cannot go unnoticed! We are both medical travelers who like to support our own..we will gladly share this unbecoming experience of your establishment with others. Unfortunately I can't give less than one star.

Rude host bad attitude, could not seat five people. They seem to have an excuse, for everything. Just admit you under staffed and over worked. Treat people like you want to be treated. Will never go back there. Do not go thee I repeat Go where you treated with respect. Like The Yard House. Great service.

THIS PLACE MIGHT NEED A KEITH LEE INTERVENTION (like he did with some of the ignorant restaurateurs in Atlanta): I saw this place being hyped up on TikTok and decided to go check them out and support their business. I placed a pick up order on Door Dash (for $150 worth of food mind you). We were so excited to try this place and support an African-American entrepreneur... When I arrived and told the person at the reception podium I was there to pick-up a Door Dash order, the guy was a bit abrasive and quickly said "we don't do Door Dash on weekends". I was confused but proceeded to show him the order details hoping there had been a mix-up. Anyway, although the restaurant's website and DD made no mention of the weekend ordering restriction, I guess I was in the wrong for not knowing that fact through osmosis! In any event, the guy (who I presume was an "owner") was so rude and just downright abrasive that it just soured me on the whole experience. I left empty-handed and disappointed. Note to the owner(s): Common courtesy can go a long way -- even when a mix-up or snafu occurs. I won't be back and will be sure to share my "experience" with everyone I know...Good luck with your business!

I arrived at the restaurant at 6:45 only to be turned away by management. They claimed that they cannot sear anyone after 6:30 in the dining room. They don't close until 9:00pm. This is absolutely ridiculous. I will NEVER, EVER go to that venue again

The food at this place is very tasty. The portions are enormous but the reservation process sucks. When you submit a reservation you have to wait for an email confirmation which you may or may not get a response. They have confirmed and then said it was a mistake. They need to use a legitimate reservation site. They say they take walk ins but they really don't and they always say their booked but the tables are always half empty. But I love the food!

The Food here is awesome!! I had the whiting and grits.. and we shared the chicken and waffles.. the portions are huge..it was enough food for everyone to try a little of everything (there were 5 of us) and the dj and ambiance made it grown and sexy.. only thing is it's BOB and we didn't notice until we were already there. I was so busy eating.. I didn't take any pictures .

If only I could rate the food a minus zero. The food was way too salty! The cabbage was soggy and bland . The chicken wings were undercooked almost raw. I can't believe they serve only chicken wings with the so-called "chicken and waffles." The fish is advertised as whiting when it's actually tilapia. It's no surprise that there is a disclaimer on their menu . Only go here if you want a stomachache and food poisoning. A total waste of money!

Finally stopped in today. This place is literally around the corner from me and I never stopped in, shame on me. After hearing two of my boyz hype this place up, it was time for me to see what all the hype was about. This place deserves all the praise they get. Don't be fooled by the outside appearance, the ambiance is great on the inside. Staff is very friendly, helpful and polite. Now for the food. I had a mixed fried chicken platter. The chicken was cooked to perfection, moist on the inside and a beautifully fried skin on the outside, crispy and tasty. For sides I had candied yams and the signature corn pudding, both amazing. I especially liked the corn pudding. Not sure why they call them sides, you get so much they could be mains. Portion size was much more than I expected. Very nice portion size, you definitely get your money's worth. I will be stopping here again, and again, and again. Can't wait to try the fish.

I am so glad that this place was put on my radar! So far, I have had brunch here twice (once was for my birthday brunch), and both visits exceeded my expectations! I can't wait to go back and try the dinner menu.

The food here is on another level! The sweet potato grits are EVERYTHING! I wish I had 2 more stomachs so I could eat more. I will definitely be back for more!

My first experience here was interesting, an older lady greeted us but kept harping on that there was one less person in our party than we reserved, as one of our friends couldn't make it. She wouldn't let go of the issue, which we thought was odd especially since we were the only ones in the restaurant at that time. I will say we all enjoyed our food, I have no complaints about the food the one time I was able to eat here. My next issue is their @ "reservation only" policy on weekends doesn't make since to me, I go to brunch a lot and this is the only place that requires a reservation, but however often looks empty. My husband and I went and was turned away due to not having a reservation when only 4 ppl were in the restaurant (yes I counted) they said they had a party of 8 coming in soon and couldn't accommodate us because that's the rules. Wow they just let $70 give or take what our bill would be walk out the door. Just seems like poor business practice, ppl often wake up and say let's go get breakfast or brunch spur of the moment. Well another establishment got our money that day. We gave it another try and made a reservation and guess what....it was closed for a private event. Now why would they allow reservations to be made on a date they were closed to the public. A courtesy call could have been made because we don't live around the corner from that place. I give up!

They have HUGE portions and well seasoned food. The staff were these two adorable and friendly sisters. We had grits and catfish, the catfish was fried to perfection. The Grits were smooth and cheesy. We had the pineapple upside down pancakes.OMG I ate those pancakes all day and night the stack was so big! I would go back soon to try another item because there were so many things I wanted to try. The only thing I would fix are the drink containers are way to big. The ambiance was pretty, I loved the selfie wall.

Being originally from the south it's hard to find that home cooked soul food meal living in Jersey. That is until I discovered this place. The vibes and staff are unmatched! Everyone is truly treated like family! Highly recommended!

The very definition of Soul. The Food is good and I had a brunch. The pancakes, scrambled eggs and even the fruit met all my expectations. The fried chicken was especially well done, surpassing the chain restaurants chicken. The small restaurants win again, please don't miss the opportunity to experience real soul food.

Very great American food at its best! The service is amazing the people absolutely wonderful! The chef has great talent of taste! Ambiance is fantastic!
