Hot Dog Johnny's is the definition of a classic done right. From the moment you step near the stand, you’re hit with the nostalgic aroma of the hot dogs and all the toppings—pure magic. The atmosphere is effortlessly welcoming, like something straight out of a neighborhood storybook. There's just something about the vibe: people chatting, and the simplicity of good food bringing everyone together. But what truly sets Johnnys apart is its legacy. They’ve been around for years, and you can taste the tradition in every bite. Whether you're a first-timer or a lifelong regular, you're treated like part of the family. Their consistency, charm, and that unbeatable snap of the hot dog make them a cornerstone of the community. Long live Hot Dog Johnny's —this place is iconic, and it only gets better with time. It is a must to try their frosted birch beer and or freshly made buttermilk.

Google
Amazing hot dogs with toppings for $2.07 in the year 2025 in a cute historic establishment in Buttzville, NJ? Incredible. I came here as a kid on my way home from summer camp and I’m so happy it’s still going strong. May Hot Dog Johnny’s live on for eternity. 1000/10 ⭐️🌭❤️

Google
My boys and I dribble from pa here just to enjoy a great hotdog. Great food great prices friendly staff and always clean. Never a disappointment ..

Google
By far the best hot dogs of my life. Flavor exploded in my mouth. Workers are also very nice with their samples of buttermilk and birch beer.

Google
There are two food items on the menu: hotdogs and fries. That says it all. Hot Dog Johnny's is a specialist in great hotdogs. My son pounded back 3 in no time. I held back and just had a pair. Also a nice outdoor seating area and frsh birch beer and birch beer floats, which tried---both are excellent. Highly recommended that you pull in here!

Google
Long time NJ institution in business over 80 years. Basic no frills menu of hotdogs and fries. Got hotdogs with everything (chili, mustard, onion and pickle spear) and large fries. Washed down with their traditional birch beer. Prices are very reasonable. Sat outdoors under the covered patio. Grounds and buildings are well kept and clean.

Google
Fun roadside stop! Great Birch Beer and hot dogs. Don't expect an expanded menu. Hot dogs, fries, & drinks (including floats). CASH ONLY!

Google
Will always be my favorite hotdog spot. My parents were engaged here, even their ashes are here.. it’s my first memory of a hotdog, it’s the go to spot for my kids for a lunch road trip..

Yelp
Redemption! I was very rough on them last time out but to be fair, the last time I visited it was the dead of winter and I went there right at opening so not at all a fair shake. So, today, I went back at 1:00 on a beautiful Saturday and the lines were long and the place was hopping. The vibe is totally old school with people taking orders all willy-nilly and the lady in charge is shoving hot dogs and fries in brown paper bags a mile a minute. So, the hot dog, which is deep fried, was out of this world. Full of flavor and a nice snap to it. The fries were classic roadside fries - crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside. I'm so glad I went back and gave them another shot. So totally worth it. Can't wait to go back; just need to make sure it is a time when they have some business and have the kitchen in a good groove.

Yelp
This place is adorable! I have driven by it many times and decided to finally give it a try last week. The fries were crispy and fresh. The birch beer was also amazing. I got my hot dog with everything on it - it was just okay. All that together was about $7. Such a fair prices and such a great ambiance. It is definitely worth the visit if you want a vintage vibe. I will be back to try the milkshakes! FYI - they are cash only.

Yelp
Still a nice stop for a quick bite to eat. Simple hot dog with mustard, fries and some great birch beer! Friendly staff, clean picnic area right along the picturesque Muskenetcong River flowing steps away.

Yelp
For anyone reading: they are a cash-only establishment. We stopped for lunch but the bugs in the parking and exterior area were soooooo bad it was like the plague of locusts. We don't know if it's seasonal or just an unfortunate coincidence the day we stopped, but combine that with the fact they only take cash, we couldn't actually order any food. We do want to try it, but will have to come back... hopefully for a better experience. It does seem locally popular and like a cool place.

Yelp
HOT DOG JOHNNY'S WILL FOREVER BE ONE OF MY HAPPY PLACES. Haha this sounds dramatic but if you enjoy a beautiful summer day under a shady tree along a nice flowing creek and your favorite food you'll know what I mean. I keep a blanket and a little tiny folding table in the trunk just for this. My order - 2 dogs w/ ketchup, mustard and a pickle. Order of fries and a coke. Their fries are one size and I believe their drinks are one size as well.

Yelp
My first time here was when I was 8. 40 years later it remains the same to me. Nestled next to the river off the road, it's a relaxing and scenic area to enjoy a quick meal. It's a testament to consistency and simplicity. The original Johnny's Hot Dogs are cooked in Peanut Oil, topped with mustard, chopped onion and a pickle spear. Simple and straightforward. No Chili, No extra, No "special" dogs and it's not needed. Fries are average but good, and if you like Buttermilk you're in luck. Otherwise grab a birch beer or other soda with your dogs. Service is usually good, never had an issue before. Johnnys has been here over 80 years and refuses to change or bend to trends which makes it unique; and reminds us of simpler times when everything wasn't so complicated.

Yelp
It was good not spectacular. Servers were very nice and very helpful. I would definitely go back but it's not a must go place for me.

David D.

Yelp
Why do they still have poor quality hot dogs? They are terrible and now they don't even slice their pickles thin so it fits

Yelp
Made a point to come visit on my last trip back to NJ. it had been decades since I had stopped. Such a nice nostalgic visit. memories came flooding back. Great dogs and birch beer. It you are in Buttzville, stop by and grab a couple of dogs, some great fries and a birch beer. Love this place.
google avatar

Frank P.

Yelp
Yea, it's just a stand in the middle of nowhere Buttzville NJ. But it was worth the drive from the Bronx just to sample the dogs!! Got 2. Mustard Onion, mustard relish. Buns were fresh. As were the toppings. Dog wasn't snappy but had that long forgotten taste from the past. More porkish than beef. Fries were okay. And the Birch Beer was the best I've had in a bit!! Service was fast and girl behind counter was funny and engaging!! The interior was like eating at a camp site from the past. All in all. Worth the trip

D G.

Yelp
All around amazing and somehow inflation proof, the best hot dog place in the state in my opinion
google avatar

Barry P.

Yelp
I love these hot dogs. Deep fried in peanut oil. And the perfect combination of onions and pickle with a cold birch beer to wash it down.

Yelp
It's a great, old school place that you must stop at if you are in the area! It's been there since the 1940's and it's awesome! There is a little sign between the windows where you order, with the hot dogs menu. It's very simple therefore it's very easy to order!
google avatar

Noah W.

Yelp
Loved the food and atmosphere!!! If you ever passing by stop by and see it. Even if it's crazy busy it's worth your time
google avatar

Mark R.

Yelp
We were visiting the area and had heard about this icon of the area. What a disappointment. It was a nice spot beside the river, and the staff was friendly enough. But a terrible hotdog. Sorry folks.
google avatar

Chess T.

Yelp
The food is good and service is good but I do wish they would take credit cards, unfortunately It's a cash only business.
google avatar

Sarah J.

Yelp
Good hotdogs! Tried this place after hiking mount tammany and it was a good pick me up! Line was long but went quick. Got a hotdog with onions, relish and ketchup, side of fries and birch beer. Very good. Fries were super crispy. First time trying birch beer and I didn't hate it! Lol
google avatar

Lisa M.

Yelp
This is a must stop. The food was basic, but good. The location is fun and recommend it you families.
google avatar

James D.

Yelp
Cheap hot dogs and fries in an old school setting. Kids love this place. Not quite brave enough for the buttermilk however.
google avatar

Gregg H.

Yelp
Highly recommended! I enjoyed two hot off the grill, delicious hot dogs that were very fairly. The service was courteous and fast. I'll never dine at an overpriced and underwhelming Nathan's Hot Dogs again! It's also great cocktail hour banter to mention that you dined in Buttzville NJ. I'm sure that this town has been the butt of many jokes through the years. Definitely check out this off-the-beaten track hot dog joint when you're heading to or from the Delaware Water Gap.

Doug S.

Yelp
Location, location, location- I love this place for what it is but to me it's just an average hotdog- with only yellow mustard!! - I need to stop at quick check down the street and get packets of spicy brown mustard before I go.
google avatar

Gregory J.

Yelp
The rustic decor, complete with vintage posters and checkered tablecloths, immediately welcomes you in, promising an enjoyable dining experience. The staff, too, are attentive and welcoming, enhancing the overall positive ambiance of the place. However, as much as the atmosphere leaves a pleasant impression, the same cannot be said about the star of the show: the hotdogs themselves. Sadly, Johnny's Hotdogs falls short in the taste department. The hotdogs are disappointingly lackluster and unappealing. Despite being the centerpiece of the menu, they lack that juicy, flavorful punch that one would expect from a top-notch hotdog joint. The limited selection of toppings only adds to the letdown. It's puzzling that a place known for hotdogs doesn't offer sauerkraut, a classic and beloved condiment for many hotdog enthusiasts. The lack of variety in toppings leaves patrons with limited choices to enhance the taste of their hotdogs, making the dining experience somewhat mundane.

Thomas R.

Yelp
Tourists Trap, not many toppings when I visited. I think it's just a money grab, nobody thrilled to work there from what I can tell !

Yelp
A friend and I came here almost a month ago around noon on a weekday. Truly disappointed with the hotdogs. I thought, the hotdogs were very blah. The buns were just okay. Maybe "back in the day the hotdogs were wonderful" but not now. In addition, no sauerkraut was available : ( Their Birch beer and French fries were very good. The fries were hot and crispy. Window service is just blah. The few people working couldn't even crack a smile. However, who knows what's going on behind the scenes. Extras: Outdoor seating is available with benches. Place keeps with Covid guidelines. Outdoor grounds are very pretty. As you can see by some of my photos. Lots of outdoor parking is available. Two restrooms are available. The bathrooms were clean. So, it's a good stop off place to use the John. 2 1/2 Stars.

Yelp
I finally made it to this vintage Hot Dog outpost in rural NJ. Springtime is a nice time to visit Hot Dog Johnny's as they have a very clean and pretty outdoor space to enjoy your lunch. There are picnic tables in and out of the sun, a swing set for the kids (currently closed), and a lovely view of the Pequest River. The parking lot is very big, and the take-out restaurant has an old fashioned, picture-worthy vibe to it. The food on its own is a three star experience. The famous hot dogs are just ok, and the toppings are unusually limited (mustard, ketchup, onion, pickle). Fries and birch beer are very popular; add a few selection of chips and that's pretty much the menu. The prices are low, making a fun spot to bring kids for a moderately-priced excursion. They could also have their window line organized a little better, as some of the newbies were in one spot and the regulars went to another. Definitely an interesting place to check out if you're in the area (West North Jersey, Delaware Water Gap, etc).

Babak P.

Yelp
sir. I do not they take credit cards any more. best hotdog in 150 miles R. outstanding class people

Yelp
No Frills. That's the phrase that comes to mind when thinking about Johnny's. A few toppings, a few sides, buttermilk, root beer. End Visit. If you're looking for something more than that, this isn't your stop. If you're looking for a quality dog at a decent price with some nice scenery while you eat...check them out. Make sure you bring cash. Getting the dog with everything is the way to go in my opinion. Mustard, onions, and a pickle. When I make pickles at home I nearly always add a pickle now thanks to Johnny's (and the one dog I had in Chicago when I was there). The fries are just fries in my opinion...but everyone else I know seems to love them. They use peanut oil here so that could be why they love them (and also something for people with allergies to note). I don't drink buttermilk but I hear it's excellent here. Their frosted mug root beer is fantastic, definitely get that. I've been here many times and i'll be back again. Hot Dog Johnny's - Didn't Suck.

Yelp
It was a lovely day for a Sunday drive and since I was craving a salty hot dog, we ventured down route 46 to sit creekside and enjoy the basic menu. 2 hot dogs, choice of five condiments (mustard, relish, onion, pickle or ketchup) for $1.85 plus side of French fries and a birch beer, under $10! The hot dog is fried in peanut oil, standard fries and cold soda. That's it! The place was packed, big parking lot, 2 long lines, available seating inside or under the roofed patio. 77 years of selling hot dogs. The service is fast, the help is friendly but remember to bring cash! The ATM is 1/2 mile down road at the Quick Chek. Enjoy your visit.
google avatar

Mark D.

Yelp
It's a roadside hot dog joint, so don't expect anything fancy. If you are looking for a good hot dog, then check it out. Get a hot dog, little bag of fries, maybe a birch beer... eat outside if the weather allows. Nice views.

Yelp
Love - it's a family tradition for decades ! Hot dog pickle onion mustard and a birch beer ! Simple & Spectacular all at the same time

Cherie H.

Yelp
I will always love Hot Dog Johnnys it has been a life time staple. So many memories I love their everything hotdog and Birch beer soda my husband always gets the Rt 80s and fries. The place is kept immaculately what's not to love

Dick C.

Yelp
I like the hotdogs here, however, I have to order it without mustard then bring my own so I can have brown mustard on it. Yellow mustard is a bit P'Tuckeyish or down south for me. That and no Sauerkraut??? WHAT? But, the fries and root beer are great. does anyone actually ever buy the butter milk?
google avatar

Yelp
Hot Dog Johnny's is an iconic hot dog spot. It's always busy for a reason. Delicious hot dogs. No frills just a straight fastball of a hot dog. Ketchup mustard raw diced onion relish pickle are the options. No chilli cheese kraut. Fries are crispy and delicious. Birch beer is the perfect compliment. John and Jordan are studs

R. H.

Yelp
We've been coming here for years, but no more. They've always been disorganized, but this time we came on a busy day and they were outright rude. They were serving multiple customers at a time out the same window and snapped at us for getting in the way when we were in fact still ordering, then they got our order wrong, then they gave us one out of 4 shakes and insisted they had served all 4, then they rolled their eyes when I couldn't hear what they were saying over each other. That last eye roll pushed me over the edge. No hot dog is worth the aggravation.

Colin C.

Yelp
Some of the best hot dogs in the country. Line was not too long. Would recommend to anyone in the area.
google avatar

Brad A.

Yelp
Great place to get a decent hot dog. 4 hot dogs with everything and a order of fries all for under $10. How can you beat that? Lots of parking and has a nice view of a creek next to it. CASH ONLY!!!!!

Bob O.

Yelp
The hot dogs and their fries are the best. The staff is first class. We just walked in ordered and they make everything right in front of you. The day was beautiful so we ate outside. This is an iconic place and the food and the staff has always been the bright spot in the great place.
google avatar

Jennifer D.

Yelp
An a-okay stop if you're looking for a quick, cheap meal. The menu is super simple, hotdogs, fries, birch beer and buttermilk. You can get your hotdog plain or with toppings. The everything hotdog includes mustard, relish and a pickle. Place your order at one of the windows and sit inside or outside. The outside area is seasonal. There is a small play area for kids here. Don't go in with high expectations. This is a very simple hot dog stand but perfect for a quick bite.

Gary M.

Yelp
Cool roadside stand serving hot dogs and fries. Great place to stop when going for a drive.

Collin M.

Yelp
The best. Been going here for 30 years, will probably continue for 30 more. Cash Only - be prepared. Try the birch beer and the fries too.
google avatar

Damian D.

Yelp
This spot has it all-almost. Great location, terrific views, charming spot. Fries above average. Great drinks. Won't break the bank. A historic road stop. That said the staff is indifferent, and calling the hot dogs 'meh' is giving a generous review. So go for the experience and consider getting a hot dog penance of some type.
google avatar

Beth R.

Yelp
Hot dogs will always be a guilty pleasure of mine. Needless to say I had to stop here. Quick service, good dogs and serene spot.

ed c.

Yelp
Been going there for 50 years or more. Always get two dogs with pickle, onion and mustard with an order of their great fries. Try it. You won't regret it.

Pat B.

Yelp
Been coming here since I was a kid in the 70's and still love it. If you're expecting tons of toppings then this isn't your place. Raw onion, mustard and a pickle is what you get when you order "wit" No burgers no perogies, no deep fried corn nuggets etc. dogs, birch beer, and I believe ice cream and their famous buttermilk. Glad they didn't cave, fast in n out and great staff. Same as it ever was!
google avatar

Kimberly S.

Yelp
I've been stopping by here for as long as I can remember, every time I take a trip to PA. Since my grand parents used to bring me here and that was long ago. But unlike most places this place has pretty much always stayed the same as I remember it. They keep the menu pretty simple here... hot dogs, fries, sodas, butter milk ( never understood this with hot dogs?) and maybe some ice cream, chips, and snack cakes. We normally get a couple dogs each with your choice of mustard, ketchup, onion, relish, and pickle. That's it... no sauerkraut, chili, cheese... so don't ask...lol Great crispy fries and delicious birch beer. Food is cheap and hits the spot. I guess since this place has been here forever "if it ain't broke don't fix it" ;) If your passing by stop in and give them a try... it's like stepping back in time.
google avatar

Stephen K.

Yelp
I was told to me by friends that this is the place to go for a good dog. When I got there I asked for a hot dog with cheese and cooked onions and was told they don't have those toppings. Great. Just had to have raw onions on my dog. They have a nice eating area and swings for young kids. Only good thing is they have birch beer in a frosted mug. One time and done. Found a hot dog cart later in the day and got a good sabrett dog
google avatar

Diane C.

Yelp
You always know when a place is good eats when the parking lot is full. Good times good memories!

Erin L.

Yelp
Wasn't expecting much at a place called hot dog Johnny's, and I got exactly what I expected. This place does hotdogs and french fries and not much else. There was a steady flow of traffic in and out of this place, so it must be a local favorite. I had to stop by to check out the grub. It was OK. It was a solid tasting hot dog. There wasn't anything spectacular about it, but it was good and cheap. To quote Forrest Gump, "That's all I've got to say about that."

Tom M.

Yelp
Still a great place to stop, just wish they had more offerings for toppings, can't beat the prices
