Hot dog Johnny’s, Belvidere, New Jersey, Route 46, a true Garden state landmark, and one of two nationally famous Jersey hotdogs I’ve had the pleasure of growing up on (the other being Fort Lee’s legendary Hiram‘s across the road from where my uncle used to live). Taste wise, Johnny’s is one of a kind with their peanut oil fried dogs with the basic but perfect condiments of mustard, chopped onions, and a pickle spear. Johnny’s does not use the popularly used Thumann’s natural casing beef & pork frankfurters of many NJ deep fried hot dog joints (Hiram’s and Rutt’s Hut’s weapon of choice for the perfect deep fried ripper or French fried dog, or whatever you wanna call a Jersey style fried hotdog) and instead I believe uses Pennsylvania made skinless Berk’s beef & pork dogs (popular around Easton and the surrounding areas of eastern PA and western NJ at places like the 2 Jimmy’s and the now defunct Toby’s cup), which brings them down a tad from a texture standpoint though the taste is still great. They don’t have a chili and cheese to put on your dogs, nor do they have red onion sauce or sauerkraut. Still, I definitely consider them a top 5 NJ Hot dog and might be my personal favorite just in terms of just pure flavor and nostalgia, a literal taste of childhood for me, not to mention the beautiful riverside setting, perfect for a warm summer day.
