Where to Eat at the Jersey Shore | Eater Philly

"At Hot Dog Tommy’s the dogs act as a blank canvas for piled‑on topping combos like buffalo sauce with blue cheese or Russian dressing with coleslaw, and you shouldn’t sleep on the loaded mashed potato bowls, aka Potato Tornados." - Caroline Coral

Overall amazing experience! The hot dogs with chilli and cheese were amazing. The owner is wonderful as well. Definitely check it out. Being right near the beach makes it even better. We were visiting from MA and for the second time and it was delicious.

Google
This was a random find for me while walking through the beach line area of Cape May. What caught my attention to Hotdog Tommy’s was the line of 15 people situated about 20 minutes before closing time. The large selections of specialty hotdogs was impressive. Plenty of classic toppings, but then I found some hotdogs with a questionable combination of toppings that had you thinking as to how they could possibly taste good together. In the end, this hot dog with mashed potatoes, sharp cheddar cheese & bacon was selected. Hesitant & excited to take a bite, I was pleasantly surprised to get a good amount of all ingredients in every bite. Similar in taste to a loaded baked potato on top of a hotdog. Somehow, it worked. The flavors had me smiling at how good it tasted. And I can’t forget about the slushes. I went with mango and cherry as two separate drinks. The mango was an absolute sweet treat with a fun, sugary taste of actual mango and in slushy form, was perfect for the hot day. The cherry slushy was something special. Just the perfect combination of fruity and refreshing. I mixed both towards the end. THAT was an amazing combination. The owner was out greeting the customers and was so personable and friendly, that you almost forget you just met. Highly recommend this little hotdog shop!

Google
Hot Dog Tommy’s is a must every summer when we come to Cape May! The Mac Crunch dog is my favorite! The bad dogs are amazing, a big hot dog! This year my sister has become gluten free and she was still able to enjoy a hot dog, which she too said was amazing! I HIGHLY recommend hot dog Tommy’s! 🌭

Shawn S.

Google
Unique place. They basically have a hot dog for anybody if it could be put on, they probably have it. I had the uh maccrunch, hot dog, which was a big quarter pound hot Dog because I chose the bad dog over the lean dog and then macaroni and cheese and crispy fried onions on top delicious. The owner is very nice. Sits out socializes, a great guy.

Jorie M.

Google
This place has the best customer service I ever had. We come here every year in hopes for just hotdog tommy’s. This place always lifts our spirits. The hotdogs have to be the best hotdogs i ever had in my life. Im always begging my family to come here! Keep it up!

Eshika P.

Google
so lovely that they have vegan options! the Mac cruch had vegan mac n cheese as well. the counter service was so friendly and fun!

Abigail W.

Google
My whole family goes to the beach for a week every year and hotdog Tommy’s for lunch is a tradition. They’re not stingy with the topping and the quality is on point. I love That they upgraded to cardboard containers this year to keep the dogs looking pristine. We love it!

Carissa T.

Google
Hot Dog Tommy’s is the best place to get a quick, easy and absolutely delicious bite in Cape May! The owner is the nicest guy (actually all the staff are so nice) and it’s so awesome how passionate he is about everything. Absolutely love that they cater to vegans and have such a wide range of vegan options and are open to suggestions for new things too! All around an amazing place and a must stop (multiple times) while in the area!

Terry G.

Yelp
Hey, being a vegetarian, I don't get many opportunities to eat a "hot dog." So when I noticed that Tommy's had a vegan option, it sucked me right in. We ordered a South Side dog as well as a Cliffe dog with mustard & onions. Honestly, I wasn't expecting much ; however, both dogs were delicious. Tasty & a bit messy; perfect. Kudos to Tommy's for bringing that great hot dog taste to us vegetarians. Thank you.

Yelp
Now I have seen it all. Never thought I would see a niche business like gourmet hot dogs. Really? I visited this establishment twice and was not disappointed. I had the Chicago the first time and the Black Russian the second time. I loved the Black Russian. Tommy's serves high quality ingredients mixed with delicious toppings to provide the best hot dog you have ever tasted. Their fries are hand cut and fresh. Better than Five Guys fries. Great price/value relationship
google avatar

Yelp
Another in a long line of great New Jersey hot dog spots. This one has one of the coolest locations (between the WSM and the ocean). Tried the Black Russian, slaw dog, and junkyard dog. All were great with plenty of flavor on a perfectly cooked dog. Found a bench behind the mall to eat which was a perfect way to end the day. The service was great. The owner greeted us and obviously loves his business. The lady at the register was great too. This is the first stand I've been to where they package the hot dogs in a plastic container which is a great idea. Glad that I stopped and I will definitely be back to try the numerous other combinations.
google avatar

Chuck O.

Yelp
Great classic Cape May quick stop eating joint. There's no seating so basically it's to go or you can take to the beach. I got the grilled cheese (wasn't in mood for a hot dog) and my wife got Mac and cheese and chili dog. She enjoyed it as well.
google avatar

Nicole F.

Yelp
Super friendly and quick service! Def need to stop in when you are in cape May. This time we were determined to try the vegan options. Carrot dog with vegan slaw- very tasty , could be a little more Smokey, the vegan slaw was a good topping option. Crispy and light Vegan Mac - vegan and gluten free, very good as well. We've had their tater tots and regular dogs in the past. Def stop by Tommy's if you are in town.
google avatar

Nat P.

Yelp
Vegan dogs!!!! Yheaaaaa There's a friendly gentleman with a hot dog hat on and give orders to the customers, he made my day. I'm so happy to be able to go to the beach and get a hot dog with cherry slushee!
google avatar

Lynda D.

Yelp
This is the best hotdog i've ever had!! My family decided to stop by HotDog Tommy's midday after strolling down Cape May and seeing a ridiculously long line. We assumed whatever this store was selling must be good and we were right :) Despite the long line, service is incredibly fast. As it was our first time at HotDog Tommy's, we had trouble deciding what to get off their large menu. We hadn't decided by the time we got to the register but the very helpful staff was prepared to recommend us the most popular ones for us to try. I got the Paige - Zap Dog with the "bigger bad dog" and trust me, you will want this one over the leaner one.
google avatar

Lauren D.

Yelp
They have vegan and regalia hot dogs the best in the area must go to from early mid spring to late September I give it a 100/10
google avatar

Les L.

Yelp
I am a long time customer but was shocked to see hot dogs priced at $9 each--after tax, two would have cost $19.18. For that price, I ended up going somewhere else that offered full table service and seating for the same price including tip. I get that costs like meat, labor, and rent have gone up, but the pricing still feels excessive. Even Lincoln Financial Field, known for high concession prices, only charges $6.50 for a hot dog. Citizens Bank Park? Just $5.00. Why?
google avatar

George P.

Yelp
So good! Messy but worth it! I love the creative options! The Tornado is my favorite but have tried plenty of the others...
google avatar

Lorenzo M.

Yelp
This was my first time dining at Tommy's. The staff here is on point! They're easy to talk to. Tommy's menu has something for everyone. I had a slaw dog and a cranberry salad. It was great! I was impressed! Keep up the great work Tommy's! If you're ever in the neighborhood. GET SOME!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Yes, the best damn hotdogs anywhere if you are craving a water dog, and that's why there's always a long insane line outside this place!! You can't miss this place on Jackson Street, across the street from the mad batter less than a block from the ocean you'll always see a long line of people waiting at a small little hotdog stand! Well, once you wait in line at that hotdog stand you'll understand why! These are the best damn hotdogs You can put in your mouth!! They're smaller hotdogs, but they literally melt in your mouth! You could even eat one as a snack in the middle of the afternoon it doesn't have to be lunch. If you're getting a little hungry after you come off the beach or just need something to hold you over for a few hours grab one of these guys! Or if you really don't want to risk ruining your appetite, ask them to split one in half and share it with someone. When I did this, the counter server yelled back, I'll take one hotdog splitty splitty. I thought to myself what the hell does that mean! And sure enough when I look up at the menu that is a term they used to describe splitting a hotdog in half I guess I wasn't the first one to ask LOLLL!!! A must stop when visiting Cape May! Even just to take a few bites, you can't miss this hot dog stand!

Yelp
Been coming down to the Cape for 25+ years and was first introduced to the original Hot Dog Tommy. Even waiting on the line (which could become quite long) was part of the fun as Tommy worked the line being entertaining and helping folks move the line along. We'd always make it a point to pick up a bunch of dogs in the endless variety of combinations as part of each visit. That is until today. For what the latest owner charges for four not overly dressed dogs, one could obtain a large pizza. The prices are nuts. The legacy of Hot Dog Tommy's is forever tarnished for us. Sadly, we've had our last.
google avatar

Christina M.

Yelp
I hadn't had a chili dog in over 40 years and the chili dog here was bliss! Had a lean chili dog and it was lean and delicious. Was not overpowering with garlic. Just right. Shockingly NO heartburn! Yummmmm try the fries too! Service was great! Bruce was a great greeter and the counter workers were fast and friendly! Always a line for a good reason.
google avatar

Amasia E.

Yelp
Tommy is such a nice guy and gave us a warm welcome! You can't miss him because he wears everything hot dog lol. I had their version of the Coney Island on a "bad dog " (bigger hot dog) and added sauerkraut. It was very delicious. I love how they give you a variety of hot dogs but you can further customize them to your liking. Great place, great food! P.s. the fries are a must try! They are just plain ole fries but very fresh and all potato.
google avatar

Yelp
Tiny storefront but a big menu with a lot to offer. We stopped by for an afternoon snack and were delighted with the number of a la carte dogs and toppings. Would like to return to try some of the specialty dogs. Cash only.

Barbara T.

Yelp
45 minute wait for a small boiled hotdog. Mid afternoon Something needs to change. I need at least 55 characters to post so I'm just typing to get to that point.

Yelp
Who doesn't love a hot dog on a sunny day? What a cute hot dog spot near the water. There's not a day that goes by when you will walk past hot dog tommy's and more see a line. The people of cape may LOVE it. The menu is filled with every hot dog combination you can think of from the most toppings to a sin plain plain dog. The sizes range in typical sizes to jumbo dogs, so whatever you desire, will be there. They also have things that aren't hot dogs (I'm not sure how good they are) AND a GREAT vegan dog menu. AND gluten free options. So any type of food water, is welcome. The owner is usually there with the cutest hot dog hat on his head. Love this place!

Yelp
Finally made it here! It's worthy of all it's hype! Best hot dog Ive had, lots of choices in toppings. I had the mac and cheese w frizzled onions.... Sooo good

Nina D.

Yelp
Awesome food with great service. Owner makes an effort to get quality ingredients, talk to customers outside and deliver the best product. Fun, quick, and delicious!

Michael G.

Yelp
Amazing hot dogs and even better service! Owner is often there and he is so kind! Gluten Free dogs! They have so many awesome options and it's family friendly! The staff is amazing and everything is so wonderful!

Raymond M.

Yelp
After Labor Day, it was my last day at the beach in Cape May, NJ. The town was much quieter, and I'd heard great things about "Hot Dog Tommy's",so my sister and I decided to get lunch at Hot Dog Tommy's. We could not find parking, so I just got out and let her park while I checked out their menu. It's just so different than any other hot dog stand I've ever been to, and I loved all the choices. Their topping on a dog seemed so interesting, but I got scared I would order the wrong thing and hate it. Some of their topping were strange, for instance, a hot dog with Mac & cheese and mashed potatoes. Someone I know loves that, but I decided to get the "Rub-an," and yes, all their dogs have names: the "Chili dog," the "New Yorker," and so on. They had dogs topped with French Fries, anything and everything dogs, and I got a bowl instead. The chili bowl had Chili, mashed potatoes, chopped red onion, sour cream, and Sharp Cheddar Cheese, which was delicious. I recommend Tommy's, but he is only open on weekends now, and he said he closes shop till the spring; he is located in Cape May, NJ, at 319 Beach Ave on a side street. He has a walk-up window to place your order; no seating or restrooms exist. There was no waiting in line for us, but during the summer season, I know the lines get long, and that alone says a lot about Tommy Dogs; it's worth the wait. The prices were moderate. Im looking forward to coming back next year.

Anna S.

Yelp
Hot Dogs were so good that they didn't even need condiments! They also had delicious frozen drinks. The surface was fast. Even when they had a super long line. The owner was nice, and it's a great go to place if you are in a rush, and need a quick snack.

Karly D.

Yelp
Hot Dog Tommy's is a must visit on my annual trip to Cape May. I love their unique hotdogs with all the special toppings and options. I got the vegan dog and carrot dog and it didn't disappoint. An equally unique part of the experience is the owner with the hotdog on his head and extraordinary kindness and customer service. He went above and beyond for me when another customer took my order and I pregnant in extreme heat and I will never forget his kindness. The staff all work hard to make it a pleasant experience for their customers.

Dr. Howard G.

Yelp
While the staff and owner have great communication skills. The fact is these are 10 dollar hot dogs. Well, that's what you are being charged. As someone that has consumed many hot dogs, I was not impressed. At Costco you can get an all beef hot dog with all the trimmings and a soda for $1.50. Tommys hot dogs are bland beige skinless tasteless hotdogs and remind me of Oscar Myer franks. No snap, no pop. Additionally, a quality hot dog should be accompanied by a quality bun. Not in this case, it's like a wonder bread roll. A Hebrew National stand would knock Tommys out in one day. I would love to do a taste comparison verses Sabrett skinless beef franks. I bet it would be very close. Sabretts are less than $1 each. Why am I leaving such a negative review? I haven't felt sucker punched in a long time. This was epic.

Charles H.

Yelp
Great owner, his kindness is an experience in itself when you talk with him. Hot Dogs and topping selections are amazing; such a variety! If you go don't miss out on the awesome sides they have like salads!
google avatar

Lisette M.

Yelp
Perfect, delicious, quick, affordable beach food!!! I got the vegan options and it was so good. Thank you for a wonderful meal

Lynn T.

Yelp
It's always fun and tasty! Good hot dogs at the beach, what more could you ask for? I love the variety, but my 2 all time favorites are the "Slaw Dog" and the "Reuben Dog." Service is usually quick and there is a line at times, but worth the wait! They have vegan, GF & dairy free options.
google avatar

Virginia J.

Yelp
What a treat!!! We come into town every year for the annual West Cape May Lima Bean Festival. I've seen the line wrapped around the building for HotDog Tommy's but have never tried it. Yesterday that changed. We were greeted by the owner who took our order. He is such a friendly guy and was decked out in hot dog apparel from head to toe! The warm welcome really added to our experience. We took our dogs and ate them on a boardwalk bench which was just across the street. Cape May has so many gems and Hot Dog Tommy's is definitely one of them. We will be back next year. 10/10!
google avatar

Debbie F.

Yelp
While on vaca on the S. Philly Shore is a hot dog stand with great reviews so as we were shopping the Washington Street Mall area in the seaside township of Cape May we just had to give it a try and so happy we did. My all beef slaw dog was delicious. The bun was soft and slaw fresh. It is located on a quaint road with beautiful homes and lush landscaping. The town is so inviting and Tommy and his dog shack are a great part of the charm here.

William S.

Yelp
Probably one the greatest Hot Dogs spots in the country not only for the selection but the service is best I have ever had in my life. The owner Hot Dog Tommy goes out of his way to make you special he listen to me about how when my dad and mom were alive how we go all the time. But just this past weekend a family from France stopped by and he talked to them and made feel special and gave the kids free slugged which was awesome. So thank you Tommy for the great Hot Dogs but most of all making everyone happy and enjoy the experience
google avatar

krissy f.

Yelp
Needed a snack for the beach so we headed over to Tommy's after seeing the long line in afternoon! What we got: - junk yard bigger bad dog - nor'easter bigger bad dog We saw the long line at Tommy's during early the early afternoon time so we knew we had to try it during our visit in Cape May. We headed over around 5pm and there was no line! The junk yard dog had mustard, chili, coleslaw, and crispy onions while the nor'easter had fries, a secret sauce, coleslaw, and fresh tomatoes. We opted to the the bigger bad dog option for both which means it's the thicker dog and they were delicious! I love playful toppings and they all worked together so well!
google avatar

Lashanda L.

Yelp
We received friendly service from the ladies behind the counter. There is no place to eat inside so we took our fries, hot dogs and drinks to a bench at Washington Mall. There were many dogs to choose from, but we kept it simple with chili and onions. Grab a slushie if you like or one of the canned or bottled drinks.

Marek W.

Yelp
There is no other place we've ever been confronted with such an overwhelming choice of innovative and very delicious options for dressing up hot dogs into a gourmet meal in a box. With four options of dog (Leaner Weiner, Bad Dog, vegan dog, and roasted carrot (yes!)), and more toppings than you can imagine, Tommy's is outstanding. The selections are compatible with the pallets of any age, to include mac and cheese on a hot dog!! This year, I had the Chicago-esque Dog and my daughter had the Messy Betsy. Both, sheer savory heaven for the taste buds! Moreover, Tommy himself, is a most gracious host, full of smiles, and positivity, just rife with great vibes. When he serves you, it's like being with family.  And make sure you get some merch, and compliment Tommy on his his dog hat. Tommy's is an absolute must go to in Cape May.

Peter F.

Yelp
Way to expensive for a dirty water dog. I guess the lines won't be so long this year. Hope you know what your doing, what takes years to build could all be wasted due to greed
google avatar

Stephanie C.

Yelp
We got the junkyard bad dog and dock bad dog. The bigger dogs were a nice size. I wish the chili in the toppings had a stronger flavor but overall very good! We also got a side of beans that were just okay. They do take credit cards! But appreciate cash of course.

Larry B.

Yelp
Two regular hot dogs with ketchup, one order of French fries, medium slushy. $27. Years ago this was a place to get a reasonably priced meal.
google avatar

Chastity R.

Yelp
What a LOVELY, LOVELY man! You are an asset to Cape May! He pointed me to the "can't miss" locations and was so informative! I'm happy I decided to stop here! About the food: HUGE selection at affordable prices! Filling and comforting. Opted for the All American and was totally satisfied! I'll be back!

Stacey R.

Yelp
OVERCHARGED CUSTOMER HERE! I will admit I did not think about the total until I got back to the beach with my four kids. We made our first stop of the season on 5/28/24. We've been customers since the original Tommy and family has had a 2nd home here since 1986. It was once a cheap and convenient lunch for our crew. :( We ordered 4 leaner wiener dogs - (2 Shower dogs , 2 dogs with Mash pot, chips , cheese) $6.99 each , 1 large fries $5.99 ,Tex Mex salad $7.99 , 1 Arizona Ice tea Can $1 Let's do the math : 6.99 ( the smallest wieners! ) 6.99 " " 6.99 " " 6.99 " " 6.99 " " 7.99 ( salad ) 5.99 (fries) 1.00 Arizona cheap tea $ 42.94 .... Charged $60.24 that's $17.30 tax??! And the nerve of them to ask for a 20% tip on $60.24. There is absolutely nothing special about these hot dogs!!Save your money and hit Blue Moon Pizza!

Yelp
The best hot dogs in south jersey shore area loads of choices all kinds of extras for your hot dogs choices. A must visit while in Cape May NJ

Andrew W.

Yelp
Always great dogs, great variety, friendly service. The quality, taste and freshness cannot be beat!

Ellie C.

Yelp
[Rewrote my review from back in 2020, so menu options may have changed since then.] I visited Hotdog Tommy's every day of my trip and loved it each time. The vegan hot dogs were fantastic, cooked separately from the meats, and the vegan coleslaw that Tommy makes himself was a delightful touch. The regular hot dogs were great as well. Hotdog Tommy's offers great food at a fantastic price point, with fast service and amazing customer service. It's a must-visit spot for delicious hot dogs and an overall excellent experience!
google avatar

Kimberly D.

Yelp
Chicken salad roll sandwich was really good. I'm a sucker for a good chicken salad and this delivered. They're a well oiled machine and once you order, your food will be ready within 5 mins tops
google avatar

Colleen K.

Yelp
A must-stop any time we're in Cape May!! The owner is an absolute delight, and the food is always delicious! The menu is extensive with tons of ways to customize your dog or mashed potato bowl. I always get the vegan dog with secret sauce and crispy onions, and my family really loves the mashed potato bowls. On our last visit, we found out that they now accept credit cards! Note: Be prepared for long lines.
google avatar

Deb B.

Yelp
The best hot dog stand in the area. Tommy himself is a great guy who loves his business. There is always a long line for his dogs. Tommy told us all about his food and the fact that everything is made by him and the dogs made special. They even have vegan dogs. There is something here for everyone.

Hudson Y.

Yelp
this was one of the best hot dog places ive been to. i got the hot dog with coleslaw, thousand island dressing, and potato chips and it was delicious. this is a must try place in cape may, the line out the door is bc theres no seating area so dont let that fool you.

Yelp
When most people think of New Jersey icons, Sinatra, Springsteen, heck even Queen Latifah immediately come to mind. Not me. I think of one guy and one guy only: Hotdog Tommy. Tommy has been serving up some of the tastiest gaggers east of the Mississippi over the past few years. And trust me, I know something about gaggers. As a man with girth, I always go with the Bigger Bad Dog. That being said, there is nothing wrong with the Leaner Weiner. As they say, it's not the size that matters, but the motion in the ocean, and we are down the Jersey Shore after all ;-) Each dog is great, but my personal favorite is the Zippy Chippy Zorro. Most people would think the tanginess of the pickled pepper relish would overpower the potato chips. Not Tommy. Nosiree, Tommy's out here having some fun! If you ever wanted to see what putting an entire circus into your mouth felt like, you gotta try this glizzy out. While it's hard to top his food, Tommy's playful personality seems to do it. All the more impressive after losing his left arm in that horrific hot dog cannon accident last year. I can't recommend this place enough, thanks for everything Tommy.

Yelp
Note #1: If you want a hot dog from this stand, you'll have to wait in line. Note #2: There's always a line. Note #3: These hot dogs are almost always worth the 25-minute wait. I know what you're thinking. "That's ridiculous. They're just hot dogs!" All I'll say is: it's all about the toppings and customization... ...fine, I'll say more. I'm too uncontrollably verbose to stop there. I've tried and created a bunch of hot dog combos, and the key to getting that perfect Frank-enstein (couldn't help myself) is nailing the textures and striking that perfect balance between sweet and savory. I'd suggest stopping at 2-3 toppings, or everything will blend together and become indistinguishable. Some of the flavor combos I've tried: 1) Saigon Sauce (basically duck sauce with a bit of heat), mashed potatoes, and crispy onions - Good, but it loses the textural goodness if they heap on the mashed potatoes. 2) Banana peppers and crumbled blue cheese - I liked the tanginess but it needed sauce. 3) BBQ sauce, guacamole, spicy pickle pepper relish - The flavors are so good! But it needs a bit of freshness or crunch. Next time I'll add tomatoes or coleslaw. 4) Honey mustard, cranberry coleslaw, and dill pickle relish - Don't remember how I felt about this TBH, but you can't go wrong with their cranberry coleslaw. 5) Meshugana Dog (coleslaw, Russian dressing, potato chips) - This signature favorite is grrrreat. Textures and flavors on point. They also sell slushies in a bunch of different flavors. Employees will dole out samples while you wait, so it's not all that bad. And who doesn't want their order taken by a man with a giant hot dog hat? (FYI, that's the owner.) I love getting two or three hot dogs and a slushie, finding a bench on the promenade, then digging in with the beach views in front of me. It's pretty much a perfect, casual summer meal.
