The Albatroz

"Although once a whitewashed fishing village, Cascais long ago swapped that simple existence for tangible glamour. Among imposing 19th-century villas where grand European families sought out a cool breeze to escape the hot summer lies the much loved Albatroz, a constant in a shifting seascape. Since opening as an inn in the 1960s, it has blossomed to become one of the first five-stars in town. Its buildings jut out on a rocky promontory, close enough for the sound of pounding waves to weave through any pillow talk, with Conceição Beach just steps away. Inside there is an enduring sense of elegance, a hint of mystery from the war era when spies filled the salons. A 21st-century freshness has been added by designer Gracinha Viterbo, who introduced hand-painted tiles, limestone, and palm-tree wallpaper, with a nod to the country’s maritime past in sea blue friezes where monkeys jostle with flamingos. Bedrooms are split between the old palace and a modern wing; there are also six hidden rooms in the House of the Yellow Ceilings, an Italianate jewel. The restaurant, buzzing with Lisboans devouring plump prawns, overlooks the sand, but the best seat is at the bar. To be here, glass of wine in hand, boats bobbing on the waves, is as near to perfection as it comes. Doubles from $180; thealbatrozcollection.com" - Mary Lussiana

Hotel Albatroz, Cascais, Estremadura, Portugal - Explore & Book

"Cascais is a fishing village, once patronised by Portuguese royalty and exiled European kings, now firmly established as Lisbon’s summer playground. Grand buildings rise along the beachfront, none more appealing than Hotel Albatroz. Step inside to a lost world of 1950s Riviera chic. Porters swoop upon your luggage; an ocean of marble leads to a wall of glass, beyond which a cliff-top pool glistens in enclosed gardens. The buildings wrap around an inner court: waves lap below, palms soar above, a terraced bar juts out to sea, restaurant windows give huge views down the Estoril coast. Rooms are no less alluring. Some overlook the pool, some the sea, some the beach, some all three. Take your pick from old-fashioned splendour, airy contemporary interiors, or the clipped English elegance of the next-door palace. This is a complete destination for couples, friends and families: you're in the middle of mazy streets with smart shops waiting to lighten your wallet, the beach and watersports are below. Glitzy Estoril is a short promenade away; sublime World Heritage Sintra with its Pena Palace lies in the hills behind; along the Atlantic coast is Cabo da Roca, Europe's westernmost point. Highs Not only is this the smartest place to stay in town, but the hotel's position on a rocky headland between 2 golden beaches is matchlessThe facilities are regal: a stunning clifftop pool and recently revamped pool terrace, a panoramic bar and restaurant, twice-daily housekeeping and embossed bedlinensElegant bedrooms, many with ocean views and balconiesCharming old school serviceThe train station is a short stroll away, and Lisbon a 40-minute ride Lows It’s expensive, especially in the restaurant and during peak season, but worth itLight sleepers may be aware of revellers on the beach in high seasonSome bathrooms don't have space for washbags/not much room to hang clothesRooms look a little tired, but they are soon to be renovated" - Tom Bell

"Forty minutes’ drive west of Lisbon, the coastal town of Cascais is part seaside resort, part suburb. This is where kings and queens summered, and today it’s where Lisbonites of means come to indulge in some sun and sand — and for the last couple of decades the Hotel Albatroz has been the classiest lodging in town." - Tablet Hotels

What a lovely hotel and so glad we stayed here. The staff was very kind and gave us an early check-in that appreciated after our long flight. All of staff went out of their way to be helpful and our room was spotless. We loved opening the doors to the balcony to hear the sound of the ocean but when the doors were shut, it was very quiet. |The location is perfect. We loved being able to walk to the center easily and adored walking the Cascais to Estoril seaside walkway (not all the way) which we did twice a day. |The restaurant was outstanding for both dinner and breakfast. The wait staff were top notch giving recommendations as needed. While the food was outstanding, the fig desert was totally memorable. For breakfast we enjoyed all the choices, and we got omelets one morning. We also enjoyed The Albatroz Cafe diagonally across the street. |We are already planning a return and know we truly need four days not the three we had.

Not much more to add that is not consistent with the other reviews posted. I will go with a THANK YOU to the entire staff at the Albatroz. Truly a gem, and the people definitely make it such...so kind and friendly. We celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary and the hotel staff treated us 1st class with an amazing room and service. 10 + service, and yes, doesn't help that the views are out of this world amazing. Great location with so much to do in the area... So many good restaurants. A larger grocer/department store within walking distance and even NFL football down the block at Crow's Bar!! As much as there are so many other international stops on our bucket list, we must get back to Cascais, and head north to Douro Valley and other areas in this fantastic country.

What a fabulous hotel. The location is perfect, the staff were all exceptional and the food was marvellous. So glad we chose a sea view room with a balcony too as the sunrises were incredible as was the sound of the ocean, although the room was very quiet with the doors shut. It was the perfect culmination to our busy 9 day stay in Lisbon and Sintra, just wish we’d had longer than three nights.

Google
This hotel is truly exceptional. Our room had a stunning ocean view — an absolute must-have in Cascais. We visited off-season, so almost no one was using the pool, and the atmosphere was wonderfully quiet. We slept every night with the window open, listening to the sound of the waves — an unforgettable experience. Breakfasts were good; for a five-star hotel, they could have been a bit more varied, but everything was top quality. Excellent service and beautiful interior design — great style overall, though the rooms felt a bit dated and could have been cleaner (the carpet in our room was noticeably dirty, and the ventilation was covered with visible dust clumps). We’ll definitely come back when we’re in the Lisbon area again.

Spectacular view, wonderful staff, lovely room. Classic older property and very historical style. Excellent breakfast buffet. The bed sheets and beds are very comfortable. Parking (valet) is free. Well located in the town. Pool unheated like most in Spain and Portugal we’ve encountered. Delightful!

Hi All,|After a 10 day cruise we disembarked in Lisbon and headed to Cascais for 4 days of relaxation (sort of). Our friends had previously stayed at the Albatroz and highly recommended it. The Hotel is in the central part of the city and the views are breathtaking (make sure you book an ocean view room). The decor of the hotel is very sea like. Rooms are spacious, modern, and clean. Love that they give you Port to have on the balcony. The hotel is clean, staff and very nice, and having a continental breakfast over looking the ocean is spectacular. |My only complaint, and it's a small one, is that our lunch was not particularly good when we ate there one time. I had a Prego sandwich on the menu and there was very little beef. Compared to the one I had in Lisbon the day before for about 20 Euros less it was disappointing. |Cascais remains one of our favorite spots not only in Portugal but all of Europe. You can use it as a spot to go into Lisbon (30 minute train ride) as well as Sintra. There are great restaurants all around Cascais. |Loved the Albatroz and, yes, it's on the pricey end compared to other places in Cascais but you are paying for it's location, views, and service. I would say it's worth the value.|Cheers

Google
This hotel is absolutely beautiful. The room was spacious and very comfortable, with stunning views. The staff were kind and attentive, and the breakfast was excellent, especially with the gorgeous view from the dining area. The location is ideal—close to tourist attractions but still quiet and relaxing. Highly recommended!

We booked a couple of days of relaxation after walking the hills of Lisbon. |Unfortunately all the sea view rooms were booked, so we opted for a collection double room. |Still a room in an expensive 5 star hotel. |We were given room 103, a beach view room over the kitchen extractor fan. ||The view was nice. The noise and smells from the extractor fan meant we didn’t sit outside on our balcony. |There was also noise from the road and train station. ||The patio doors sealed well and the air conditioning worked well. |Although it would have been nice to have opened the doors to let the fresh air in. ||The hotel itself was immaculate, staff attentive and the buffet breakfast lovely. |We spent all of our time by the pool. Towels provided and plenty of sunbeds. ||Only stay here if you can get a sea view room.

Yelp
The reviews below noting the arrogant and unfriendly attitude of the front desk and reservation staff are spot-on. I engaged in a colossal waste of time simply trying to change my reservation at this hotel, only to learn its partner "Luxury Escapes" is somehow connected to third-party booking agent Expedia. This is not disclosed on "Luxury Escapes" website. Deceptive? The Albatroz staff throw their hands in the air and claim they cannot help you change a reservation. I decided not to re-book a future stay at this hotel based on this interaction. Beware-- if you book thru "Luxury Escapes" you may actually be dealing with a restrictive third-party agent, and this hotel will not help you unwind that.

Yelp
This 5 star hotel is beautiful. It is such an amazing location on the beach. The included European breakfast is tasty and diverse and has a great view. The staff was very helpful. There is free valet. The bar is adorable and the bartender was fun to talk to. We would splurge on a stay here again, but honestly it wasn't even that expensive for the treatment and luxuries you receive.

Yelp
Drinks and a very early dinner on the Terrace (late lunch?). It was a wonderful lazy afternoon, watching the swimmers and the kayakers. Don't hesitate.

Yelp
Nice hotel with a lovely view over the beach. Staff at the front desk were a bit arrogant at check in which caste a damper on our expectations. I was expecting the more typical Portuguese hospitality we have seen throughout the country . It seemed everyone was looking for tips . The staff at breakfast were much better . Room was dark but well fitted out .

Yelp
Best hotel in Portugal. Ocean view suites, beautiful scenery, restaurant and lounge good for formal or informal dining. Great base for exploring Lisbon, Sintra, Guincho and the surrounding coast. Conveniently near train and bus stations.

Yelp
Very nice place to stay in Cascais. Great location and really a great place to start all your walks through the streets of the town. Right on the beach with very healthy breakfast served in the morning out on a beautiful patio over the ocean. Highly recommend this hotel. Staff was amazing and very cheerful people.

Yelp
Ok so we really love this location and the setting. The front desk staff are however not as friendly and customer service oriented as we would expect for Portugal. The wait staff in the restaurant are awesome as are the staff taking care of the rooms. This is an awesome place to visit. Just get rid of the rude front desk staff who seem to care less about helping customers. Would have given 5 Stars less front desk issues.

Yelp
This is a spectacular boutique hotel, two minutes from everything - train station, all of the activity of town, the beach..., and when you are there, you could be miles away. From the friendly greeting upon arrival, the "welcome carafe" of a lovely 30 year old port, the views, and the wonderful Portuguese hospitality and service, I could not say enough about this hotel. Stay there, get any room with the view of the water, and enjoy!
