Farm Hotels Are Rising Up

"With a complex encompassing a 145-room hotel, a lakeside firepit, a staging ground for mountain sports with its own train station, roaming livestock, and a productive farm with an attached market, it feels more or less like the ideal Québécois village — and that’s exactly the goal." - Mark Fedeli

Canada's Growing Supply of Stylish Hotels

"Though Le Germain Charlevoix Hotel & Spa is set on a working farm and runs its own farmers’ market during the summer months, the hotel itself is as modern as they come, proof that today’s travelers don’t see any contradiction between comfort and contemporary design. Much more than an updated farmhouse, it’s essentially a small village, its 145 rooms spread between five farm-inspired modern buildings." - Mark Fedeli

A great place to stay and explore both Baie-Saint-Paul and the Charlevoix region. The hotel is conveniently located, a short walk to the town and a 20 minute walk to the St. Lawrence River, where there is a small beach and pier. The rooms were modern and very comfortable. We had a view of the hotel’s working farm and cattle, and could see the river in the distance. The hotel has multiple buildings, we stayed in the Clos building. Staff were attentive, and we had a nice dinner in their casual restaurant (the upscale restaurant was closed during our visit). The town has an artsy buzz to it, multiple galleries and an art museum. A great place to recharge and rejuvenate.

This is a gem of a hotel in a bucolic setting. Efficient, well thought out rooms, areas of indoor and outdoor recreation, a lovely lawn that serves as a happy hour setting where one can receive a complementary welcome beverage, and small bites. Young kids are able to visit the cows and goats. The restaurant sources much of its food from its farm. A lovely surprise of a place. We were there only one night and so wished we could have stayed longer!

My husband and I had a LOVELY stay here in May 2025, though it was cold and rainy for most of our stay we made the absolute best of our time on property here at Le Germain. We had a DELICIOUS dinner at Les Labors, enjoyed visiting the cows everyday AND had a great time at the spa! I definitely recommend a stay here! The whole town of Baie-St-Paul was a total surprise as well, there are many quaint coffee shops and stores as well as a lot of great restaurants! Thanks Le Germain, we will definitely be back!!

Lovely grounds and area, but our room was not comfortable. We were assigned a room in the Le Clos building, and found it small for more than one person. The room is basically a square, with the toilet in a closet, the sink open against one wall, and the shower with clear glass walls exposed to the rest of the room. In short, no privacy. The TV screen is on the wall at the foot end of the bed, so you can only watch if you are in bed. There was not much space to put clothes or anything else, or to move around. What was positive: the staff were friendly and helpful, the dinner at the less expensive restaurant was good, and it was fun to walk the grounds and see the animals and gardens.

This was an incredible experience. The location, facilities and staff are incomparable. Fares at the front desk is a superstar. Truly one of the most enjoyable stays I’ve had anywhere in the world.

A Slice of Charlevoix Heaven at Hôtel & Spa Le Germain! From the moment we arrived at Hôtel & Spa Le Germain Charlevoix, we were enveloped in an atmosphere of serene beauty and understated elegance. Nestled amidst the stunning landscapes of the Charlevoix region, this hotel is more than just a place to stay – it's an experience that nourishes the soul. The setting itself is breathtaking. Imagine waking up to panoramic views of rolling farmlands, charming farm animals grazing peacefully, and the majestic beauty of the surrounding nature. It's a feast for the eyes and a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Our room was a haven of comfort and style. Thoughtfully designed with a modern yet cozy aesthetic, it provided the perfect sanctuary after a day of exploring. While some mention the beds, we found ours to be perfectly conducive to a restful night's sleep, lulled by the peaceful country air. However, what truly elevates the Germain Charlevoix experience is the exceptional service. Every member of the staff we encountered was warm, welcoming, and genuinely dedicated. The hotel's amenities are equally impressive. The spa is an absolute must-visit – a tranquil oasis where you can unwind and rejuvenate amidst soothing surroundings. The convenience of being within walking distance of the charming town of Baie-Saint-Paul is another fantastic perk, allowing for easy exploration of local art galleries. This isn't just a hotel; it's an immersion into the beauty and tranquility of the Charlevoix region, enhanced by exceptional hospitality and world-class amenities. We left feeling completely refreshed, inspired, and already dreaming of our return. If you're seeking a truly special escape in Charlevoix, look no further than Hôtel & Spa Le Germain – you won't be disappointed! oh and the skiing is just amazing at Le Massif ! don't miss out...

My wife and I stayed for one overnight at Le Germain in Baie St-Paul. The property is well located in the heart of the village, although it lacks good views of the water. It does have nice paths to access the waterfront and walk to the town (15 minutes) ….The rooms are well designed - clean and bright with large bed and adequate storage as well as lots of electric chargers. Unfortunately, the bed’s mattress was covered by a plastic cover which made sleeping hot. The spa area is nice — outdoor hot baths and hot-cold treatments although it’s a bit shocking that this hotel doesn’t provide plastic flip-flops (they make you buy them for $15!)…. The common areas are open and well lit with ping pong and food-ball tables, comfortable sitting areas, as well as an open courtyard. The restaurant’s food was underwhelming…. We had a better meal in the village. All in all, this hotel is a good choice, but it has room for improvement in several areas. We had an unfortunate incident (fire alarm went off by accident) at 11:10PM when many guests were sleeping…. We all needed to wait around for almost two hours (until 12:50am) to get back to our rooms to sleep. I do credit the hotel for providing all affected guests with a 15% cash refund for this inconvenience.

Hotel is in a great location -- quiet and outside of town but restaurants and attractions are just seven minute walk away. We had a fantastic room with king bed and a glorious view of the farmland and the St. Laurent River. (The property has a working farm with produce and animals.) If you have time, walk through the farmland and a small forest to the river. We had breakfast one morning at the hotel and it was one of the best spreads we have run into in a long time. Also had a great halibut dinner in the hotel's more casual restaurant. Be sure to view the sculptures on the hotel grounds and the paintings outside the hotel restaurant. Only one hiccup -- there were no outlets for my CPAP machine near the bed. The desk crew quickly came up with an extension cord. We loved visiting Charlevoix and would definitely stay here again.

Yelp
We had a fabulous stay at le Germain Charlevoix. Our room was adjacent to the salt water pool and our view looked out over the farm towards the Saint Lawerence. What a view. The room was eminently comfortable. The bed was high quality and our kids loved the bunks. I had a great thermal experience at the Sauna, I recommend booking ahead to make sure you have space when it fits with your schedule. I reviewed the restaurants separately but to sum it up high quality, but not cheap. We enjoyed our breakfasts and our dinners. My kids really enjoyed visiting the farm animals and the nice walk to the river beach from the property. Overall this is a great hotel and we hope to return in the future.

Yelp
Great place to stay with or without kids. Very well located. The farm setting is incredibly unique. Heated pool with pretty but not very comfortable chairs. A 2 KM walk leads to the fleuve. Had breakfast there. Samuel was amazing and gave great advice. Spa is very nice. Yoga was very enjoyable. Wish there was an elevator in our building - less fun to walk up a few flights of stairs with our luggage. Pig table is pretty but not well designed or situated. We kept hitting its ears, nose etc overall design of room not very practical but pretty. Clean. Great COVID measures.

Yelp
Amazing hotel! Nice, new, and clean. Cows and alpacas on premises. They have a children's area (toys etc) which is an added bonus!! Beautiful in the fall

Yelp
Hotel La Ferme combines modern, progressive design sprinkled with heritage cues. Our "Family" room, had a Queen bed along with 2 built in bunk beds; details included: high thread count sheets, down duvets, flat screen tv, rainfall shower, safe, Nespresso coffee maker and iPod docking clock radio(not "Lightning" compatible). And the heated floors in the separate W/C & shower were very nice! It's very au courant that they've sourced and custom manufactured many of the furnishings found throughout the complex, locally in Charlevoix or Quebec. For me, this reflects a high ideal. A few hiccups: the room lights require you to insert your room pass into a slot, which is difficult to do in the dark. $20 / person daily to use the outdoor hot tubs is a rip. There are no elevators, except main building, perhaps a pain for some, especially in snowy conditions. The look is stylishly simple, with lots of white & grey, felt surfaces, blond and weathered wood. Think urban Nordic with rustic touches. Nice details like elegant water glasses and "edison" type lightbulbs found in the rooms, are examples of little touches not seen in your conventional hotel. It may cost somewhat more than nearby hotels but I think people who appreciate original style and attention to detail, will find the cost within reason.

Yelp
This is my 4th visit here. It is a great destination for a weekend getaway. Love the environment. You wouldn't except to find such a chic-designed boutique hotel in an area surrounded by farmlands. It is accessible from Quebec City by train as well. The station is connected to the hotel ! Highly recommend the spa. It has an outdoor hot/cold pool and indoor steam and sauna rooms! The hotel rooms and hotel lobby are located in different buildings which might be a little convenient to move around in the winter.

Yelp
In the middle of a very quaint and beautiful town. Magnificent views of the St Lawrence and the town of Baie. There is a shuttle train to Le Massif which a safe and comfortable alternative to driving. Service is on par considering the French are not the most hospitable. Snowshoes, skates, snowmobiling rentals all available. They could do with a couple more fireplaces as the rooms are small but clean. The spa has great views especially from the dry sauna. Two complaints, the compound is made of several separate buildings and the parking is not near any of them. Since there are no porters check in/out is a pain if you have lots to carry. Most everything closes down after 10pm even the Bar.

Yelp
The whole family fell in love with La Ferme. From my younger daughter who was thrilled with the skating rink in the courtyard to myself who shudders at the thought of traditional family ski hotels and loved this 'boutique' version with thoughtful touches that made the trek to the hill and back as effortless as possible. We had a family room with bunk beds for the kids and a comfy queen bed for parents. It was a decent size and beautifully decorated. le Gare is part of the hotel - an actual mini train station to take one to the foot of the Massif where you board a gondola station to the top of the mountain. Inside the Gare is a free ski storage room so you don't have to shlep equipment all around. In each locker are pipes to hang mitts and helmets and boots that have air piped through them to dry them overnight. Great attention to detail! The train itself is two or three cars at most and staffed by helpful people who can assist with skiis. It chugs along the shore of the St Lawrence, a beautiful frozen post apocalyptic riverscape when we were there. So nice not to have to load the car to get to the hill and back. We did the luge'ing at the hill. Had worked ourselves into a frenzy of trepidation but was fun in the end. Guides were lovely young guys. Make sure you understand their instructions on braking especially! Snacks and light dinner in the bar area was casual and yummy local fare - great wood fired pizzas - with that lovely Quebecois touch. We had breakfast in the restaurant one day which was good. Other days just grabbed food from the bakery in the Gare to eat on the train. Skiing on Le Massif itself is stunning. The St Lawrence laid out beneath you. It's a one of a kind experience. And La Ferme delivers a friendly boutique-hotel experience that makes it enjoyable for parents as well.

Yelp
This is a really great reason to venture north-east of quebec city. It is about 90 min. from the city. It is associated with Hotel le Ferme. We were skiing at Le Masif and rented a chalet affiliated with the hotel and spa (Chalet de Foret). The experience at the spa was really, really relaxing. There is an outdoor thermal pool, we rolled in the snow when we got warm enough, got back in the hot water..wow!, fantastic views of the Laurentian mountains. Inside are steam bath, sauna, relaxation room, different drinks, cold plunge, ice scrub and a policy that asks visitors keep their voices down. This makes for a very tranquil experience. Our sore muscles relaxed, we felt great afterwards and the staff are fantastic and mostly bi-lingual. I would compare this to the finest in europe and north america. Well worth the trip. I plan to return.
