Bonifacius: From the Latin, Bonum: Good and Factum: Fate or fortune. We recently stayed at the Bonifacius Guesthouse in Bruges and over the next 12 days we indeed experienced "good fortune." From the general locale of the guesthouse, to the breakfast served and the staff, we were constantly enamored by this cozy, historical B&B. Our host, Lyne Vanhaecke, could not be more attentive to our needs and greeted us every day with a smile, and always asking if there were anything that we needed, as she was always available for our services and/or questions. It's reassuring when you have a host that is willing to go the extra mile to guarantee your stay be a pleasant one. And we would be remiss if we didn't mention her excellent staff who was always attentive at breakfast, or during the afternoon, when you may wish to slip down to the breakfast room and fix yourself a cappuccino or hot chocolate. And speaking of breakfast, once you sat down at your table you were greeted by a sensible plate of fresh fruit: strawberries, pineapple, grapes, Kiwi, and watermelon. A glass of fresh orange juice accompanied this first course, along with a basket of assorted breads, jams, spreads, including Nutella, and a small but sufficient amount of cheese and Prosciutto di Parma. A coffee maker offered an assortment of hot beverages, including black coffee, hot chocolate, cappuccino, latte macchiato. In addition to hot beverages, there were options for refilling your water decanters that were available in your room: Still Water, Still ICE COLD WATER, and Sparking Water, as well. Eggs were offered in various forms: omelettes, scrambled, with an assortment of added ingredients. And just when you thought you were satiated, waffles, hot oatmeal and yogurt with granola would be offered. If you left this guesthouse hungry, it was your own fault! Our room was beautifully appointed with a four-poster bed, chairs, flat screen tv, bath with an adjoining Jacuzzi, and sufficient closet space to accommodate 2 people for a lengthy stay of 12 days. A small refrigerator came in handy for storing ice water and other beverages. One of the premiere aspects of this guesthouse was the lovely rooftop patio which offered a spectacular view over the side canal, toward the Church of Our Lady and the Gruuthuse Palace. Be aware that the Bonifacius Bridge is directly outside the guesthouse and is a very popular spot to "vogue." A photographic tip: After breakfast, visit the bridge immediately, and take that now famous photo because if you wait, you'll never have the chance to see it without tourists. Because there are just a few rooms in the Bonifacius, we would advise booking early as the guesthouse is extremely popular and for a good reason. And if you are lucky to secure a booking, relax and enjoy this truly amazing, beautiful and exquisite guesthouse. And understand what it means to have "good fortune."
