Hotel Cardinal | Best places to stay in Provence

"This is as rare as a penguin in Provence: a thoroughly charming hotel in easy walking distance of Aix’s centre, for the same price as a faceless chain hotel in the suburbs. Set on a quiet side street, the Cardinal is not only housed in a historic 18th-century building, but its decor wonderfully evokes the era of Cezanne, in his own hometown – but with lots of essential mod-cons, including a lift and wi-fi. The friendly owners are keen to preserve its old-fashioned authenticity, and high-ceilinged rooms come furnished with marble fireplaces, antiques and chandeliers. The location, only a few minutes from the beautiful Cours Mirabeau, is ideal for exploring the city. The Granet Museum and the Place des Quatre Dauphins, with Aix’s pretty fountain, are a stone’s throw away; the restaurants, bars and shops of the historic centre are a 5-10 minute walk. The hotel is well located. The room size is good. The bathroom is clean with a bath tub but the shower does not work well because it has no shower curtain causing water to splash out onto the floor of the bathroom. The staff at reception is very friendly and helpful.

Amazing staff - everyone was so nice and helpful. I forgot my laptop charger and they found me one. There is also a dedicated unloading / offloading parking spot in front of the hotel. I felt that everything was easy and smooth. The decor is super charming and thr modernist paintings are created by the owner’s father which add to the charm. The location is unbeatable. Also great value for money.

The location of the hotel is excellent particularly during the period of the Cezanne exhibition of 2025 because it is less than 200 meters from the Granet museum where the works of Cezanne are exhibited. It is also within walking distance to most attractions in Aix. The hotel though small is clean and well kept.

Great location in the old part of Aix at a quiet road with minimum traffic. Very close to the main attractions and the railway/bus station. The room was beautiful and spacious with great style and decoration and the bathroom was big too. Very clean and we also had a small balcony. thankfully, there is also an elevator even though the building is old. Very friendly staff, helpful and they speak English.

We booked a Superior Room, and we found ourselves in a thoughtfully appointed apartment with a private yard with fountains! Such a magical place! The main room was large, clean, and very comfortable. There was a nice bathroom with tub, and the kitchen had everything you could need. The location is convenient to everything - historical sites, shopping, grocery, etc...The bed was large and comfortable, and the couch made into a single bed if needed. It was so very enjoyable to come back to this welcoming apartment and especially the backyard - it was lush and green with plants, trees, pots with flowers, and fountains! Just idyllic and beautiful. We were there for 3 nights, but had we known how homey it would be and how pleasant Aix-en-Provence is, we would have booked several weeks. We really wished we could stay forever.

Exceptionally different from any hotel I|have ever stayed in. There ia a true sense of living in mediaeval times when you stay here as it's like living in a noble- man's house. High ceilings, walls adorned by famous paintings, old furniture and mediaeval curtains. Our room also had modern comforts of excellent Aircon, good lighting, reasonable WIFI and French TV. The bed was large and comfortable. It was a real novelty staying here as it is a hotel you will remember for its unique character.. Great value, too.|However, there are a couple of things to be aware of........|1. It's biggest weakness is there is no safe in the room This was a real worry for us as we had to carry our passports, cash, credit cards, all valuables for four days. This has to be rectified!!|2. The glass door at the entrance needs a safety strip across it as it is almost invisible to see. I nearly went face first into it a couple of times A health and safety hazard!|3. Hand- held Shower Nozzle. As a rule, I don't like using them. At the Cardinal, the problem is that the shower nozzle has no resting place.|4. For a mobility- challenged person, there is no hand- rail for support.Putting in a hand- rail would be a great support for disabled guests.|However in the final analysis, we loved this hotel with its mediaeval character and would love to time- travel to it again!!

We enjoyed our week in Aix while staying at the Hotel Cardinal. The hotel location was terrific, our room was well appointed and full of character. We were fortunate to have a room with a kitchen and table overlooking the square at the Musee Granet and Eglise Saint Jean de Malte. The market shops on Rue d'Italie made shopping for the occaisional breakfast and dinner a pleasure. ||Jardin Mazarin was our best dining experience, by the way.||Navigating to Parking Mignet Garage was convenient enough...a couple blocks away and another reason to travel light. Driving in Aix, or rather around Aix on the Boulevard du Roi Rene ring was challenging at first and provided a small sense of accomplishment....as was driving in the mountains. ||Hotel Cardinal was a great base for our visit to Aix.

Yelp
This small B&B-type place made for a decent stay in Aix. A bit off the main road, it was still an easy walk to the downtown drag and close to the Fontaine des Quatre Dauphins. We had a room for three people with two beds that was spacious, clean, and had a lovely bathroom with an enormous tub! Decor is a little old-ladyish with pink walls and Art Nouveau-y candelabras, and I have to say that the pillows were really damn uncomfortable. But for a couple of nights it was convenient, quiet and reasonable.

Yelp
We stayed at Hotel Cardinal for one night, and I wish our stay could have been longer. Aix-en-Provence is fantastic and is made better by a stay at Hotel Cardinal. The staff is very friendly, attentive and helpful, and the rooms are very reasonable priced for how spacious and clean they are. Upon arrival, we were given the option of selecting our room from 3 available. The hotel and rooms have a tremendous amount of charm with the winding staircases, and each room is decorated differently. Also, the hotel is centrally located, is easy to find, and is close to parking. It also has an elevator should you need it for your luggage. When we have the opportunity to return to Aix, we will be staying at Hotel Cardinal.
