Casa Camper has thought of almost everything.
Each room is actually two rooms. One's a bedroom, and the other just across the hall is more of a lounge-like area. I slept in the bedroom and used the other room as an office. For me, it was actually super convenient to be able to have that separation.
There's a 24-hour self-service food area where you can get tea, coffee, soup, fruit, salad, bread and other goodies. This is especially helpful if you need a snack between meetings (or at a random hour of the night due to jet lag.) There are also trays available so you can take your food up to your room.
The staff is more than happy to help you chart out a course. When I explained some of the sites I wanted to see, and that I wanted to get there on foot, one staff member showed me on the lobby's large map and was careful to point out where I should avoid going at night and alone.
Little details like the Camper rubber slippers and the Shaker-inspired aluminum peg rail in the room make the place feel homey and well designed.
A lot of the hotels I stay in for work aren't ones I'd necessarily take a loved one to, but Casa Camper's a place that's perfect for both business and pleasure. It's centrally situated to many of the great neighbourhoods of the city: Barri Gotic, El Born, L'Eixample and from here you'll be in the middle of it all.
I feel obliged to warn other visitors that every single time I mentioned that I was shacking up in El Raval, the Barcelonés I was with warned me about the potential for pick pocketing. To combat this possibility I left most valuables in my room's safe and ventured out wearing a cross body purse (which I happen to think is a pretty good idea in any major city.) I felt perfectly safe in the neighbourhood but it is worth noting that some parts of it can be considered rough. Still, there's plenty of activity almost all the time around here and Casa Camper is situated just near the Museu de Arte Contemporani de Barcelona (Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art).
The wifi is a little spotty but I'm used to that in Europe.
For me, this Barcelona hotel's right up there with some of my other favourites around the world: Hollmann Beletage, Vienna; The ACE, New York; The Drake, Toronto; The Hoxton, London; The Soho House, Berlin; The Louis, Munich; CitizenM, Amsterdam.
If you can't get into the Casa Camper, I recommend the Room Mate Emma in nearby L'Eixample.
