Yelp
This is my first ever negative review, but I felt compelled to caution people--don't stay at this hotel!
My fiancé and I are Los Angeles natives and have visited SLO frequently, and this is the first time it has not been an enjoyable stay. We were looking forward to "treating" ourselves to a nice stay at this hotel at the end of a recent work trip after staying at multiple Hyatts up and down the coast (corporate but cozy).
The winds in our sails were immediately lost as soon as we attempted to simply park our car in what was promised to be complimentary valet parking (and just to preface: as LA people, we are parking warriors and proud of it, so the bar was LOW here).
We checked in and were told by the front desk staff (I'll call them Shaggy for... reasons), that there was complimentary valet parking in their garage for hotel guests, however, when we arrived in the garage, the lot was full and the valet person said there was nothing they could do for us and we'd have to find our own parking (either a nearby $20/day lot or free street parking multiple blocks away).
Additionally, we were also trapped inside their tiny garage for a while simply trying to turn around to exit while watching a car arrive behind us receive the privilege of getting a bespoke parking spot for an unbeknownst reason that the valet was unable to clarify.
My fiancé and I ended up doing free street parking and hoofing it with all our bags. When I informed the front desk person of the situation so they could tell other guests, Shaggy said, "Ohhh noooo--that's wild! Well, if there's no meters where you parked, I guess you're good."
Not what we asked and we know how parking works.
They also clearly didn't inform the rest of the guests or other staff that took over later, because it became an ongoing issue throughout the night every time we went through the lobby.
Additionally, we were given a room facing the back of THREE bars that didn't close until 2AM, despite my requesting a quiet garden-facing room without any warning of what we would be dealing with. My fiancé and I have a good sense of humor, so we enjoyed making fun of the terrible bar playlists and drunken conversations we were forced to hear amplified in our room, but for $500+/night I thought we would have a more serene experience given the spa-like experience this hotel boasts.
And finally: the architecture of the rooms is absolute chaos. The crowning glory is the toilet, which is in a room behind a SLIDING BARN-type door which should absolutely be a closet, but is an unexpected amplifying marble-floored fart studio. Ever worry about if people can hear you in the bathroom? This room will make your bowel-related nightmares come true!
I love supporting businesses, so having to write something less than positive was tough for me, but I was truly disappointed with this experience and underwhelmed by the immediate staff I met who clearly need more training (*please see below). Hotel Cerro was an unexpected disappointment, and I would caution people away until this establishment has better daytime front-facing staff and valet/parking services.
*I have worked in customer service my entire career and teach business as a professor, so I have a special respect for anyone in a customer-facing position. My review is full of respect for all other staff, but the staff we happened to encounter were not well-equipped to adequately handle hospitality and customer needs.
