A Wine Lover's Guide to Beaune, France - AFAR

"In Beaune proper, don’t miss the town’s most famous attraction, the magnificent Hospices de Beaune. Not that you’d guess from its elaborate Gothic architecture and colorfully glazed tile roof, but it was built as a hospital in 1452 and treated patients until the 1970s, before being turned into a museum. Probably unlike your local ER, however, it also owns several grand and premier cru vineyards, whose wines are sold under the Domaine Hospices de Beaune. You’ll need to find a wine buyer to take you to the institution’s annual Hospices de Beaune Wine Auction (held in November) to get your hands on the best bottles, but the building is open for tours year-round that take you back through its rich history." - Eleanor Aldridge

The free audio guide really brought all of the amazing history of the Hotel - Dieu to life. Architecturally stunning and historically impressive. We loved every minute of our visit. (The audio guide also has a children's option so don't hesitate to ask!) We reserved our spot easily online and walked right in.

Really loved the audio guide that gave great information but was entertaining the way it is done. Took us about an hour and a half to go through and a great picture of the non wine history in Beaune. Especially liked the pharmacie room and the presentation of every day life in those times.

Google
Such an interesting building full of history and beauty, mixing Middle Age philanthropy, caring for the poor, wine, art, medical science, grand cru auctions, with the wonderful story of some of the most famous vineyards of Burgundy.

Google
outstanding experience to see a hospital that operated for 5 centuries. It's founder was a true philanthropic hero who treated everyone regardless of their wealth. The audio tour is excellent. This is a do not miss!

Well worth the visit. Note the hours as they are closed at lunchtime (at least in February). The museum is very well organised and the audio tour is worth having, it comes included with the €12 ticket. The buildings architecture is amazing and a great example of the style of this area.

Google
Nice building. And nice history. Museum is a bit old-fashioned and the entrance fee is quite expensive. But when your in Beaune you have to visit.

Google
Must see building of high historical and architectural significance. The guided tour was great to understand the role the Hospices played in supporting the community. Also, great insight in the history of Burgundy, a major power in the Middle Ages.

Yelp
They've taken great care in constructing and maintaining the buildings and museum. It's a lovely story of French nobility caring for the poor (partly by giving them wine, not plague contaminated water). You'll get a free audio recording with your entrance fee. The walk through the building will take 30 to 60 minutes. The entrance is just across from a visitor center. Theres a shop just before the exit.

Yelp
Educate yourself about the history of one of the world's best wine auctions and wine events. The audio guide available in numerous languages brings the architectural and cultural highlights to life in the phenomenal restoration and collection. This was our third tour and we learn something everytime!
