A Wine Lover's Guide to Beaune, France - AFAR

"In Beaune proper, don’t miss the town’s most famous attraction, the magnificent Hospices de Beaune. Not that you’d guess from its elaborate Gothic architecture and colorfully glazed tile roof, but it was built as a hospital in 1452 and treated patients until the 1970s, before being turned into a museum. Probably unlike your local ER, however, it also owns several grand and premier cru vineyards, whose wines are sold under the Domaine Hospices de Beaune. You’ll need to find a wine buyer to take you to the institution’s annual Hospices de Beaune Wine Auction (held in November) to get your hands on the best bottles, but the building is open for tours year-round that take you back through its rich history." - Eleanor Aldridge

What a unique insight into the medical history of this area. The early commitment (1400s!) of the founders of this hospital for the poor and the nuns that cared for the sick was probably unusual for the time. It's impressive that the modern hospital next door continues the tradition of care while this important slice of history has been preserved. Absolutely worth a visit to understand this early history, but also to see the magnificent altar piece by Roger van der Weyden that was discovered in an attic, cleaned, restored and displayed. The architecture, particularly the unusually tiled roof will also be of interest to many.

Built in XVth century as a hospital for poor and disadvantaged. It has amazing glazed tiles roof; typical feature in Burgundy to show off its wealth. Over the centuries this hospice aquired some of finest vineyards, that today are the soure of financing its existence.

A true gem in Beaune, rich in history and beautiful preservation. For 12 euro this is a must see. You are provided a complimentary audio guide (no headset so bring your own if you want) and the tour takes just about an hour at your own pace. You learn about the beautiful story of the hospice, see the spaces as they were with a lot of original decor, and learn about their wine domaine too. Excellent.

This was a very cute town. We had baguettes in the town square and there were plenty of shops to browse. Very quaint, although full of tourists and buses.

We visited the site during it's annual wine auction so the place was busy. I can't imagine visiting this place during the summer season. It`s unique and probably a place everyone should visit if you're in Beaune. We didn't have reserved tickets and were able to get in within 10 minutes of arriving.

Very beautiful place with a great story. The tiles in the roof are so unique and that itself was worth visiting.

We enjoyed our visit here and learned so much . The audio guide was superb, just enough information to absorb. I would strongly recommend that visitors take a set of headphones as these are not supplied. Each room is beautifully cared for and it is so easy to visualise every day life. We were moved by the caring approach of the nuns and surprised that the hospital had still been in use 50 years ago. What a gem!
