The 10 Best Luxury Hotels in the French Riviera - AFAR

"A decade in the making, a centuries-old convent—abandoned for years—has been given a new lease on life as a hotel in the heights of Old Nice. Even many Niçois were not aware of the enormous garden that abuts the hilltop citadel. Summit the Old Town’s cobbled staircases (or ask the hotel to pick you up in a golf cart) and you’ll arrive at a discreet entrance that gives way to a courtyard planted with orange trees and terraced gardens. In many ways, the Hôtel du Couvent—the result of a 93-million-euro investment—is a symbol of Nice’s renaissance as a tourist destination. The city under Mayor Christian Estrosi has sought to invest in the hospitality sector, bringing vitality to the city that’s considered the gateway to the Riviera. The project is from French hotelier Valéry Grégo. A team of architects and designers plunged into the historical archives, and visited other monasteries, to create an aesthetic that’s respectful of the site’s heritage. The feel is minimalist to echo the place’s monastic origins. Every piece of furniture was chosen with care, such as the desks custom-made from old timber ship masts, and the antiques sourced from across Europe. The 88 guest rooms, spread across four buildings, are styled in earth tones. Standouts include the two-bedroom Marguerite Suite—its garden even comes with a barbecue grill—and room P25 (in the Pertus building) with a balcony overlooking the garden. Note: Rooms don’t have TVs." - Mary Winston Nicklin

What a beautiful hotel! Can’t recommend this place enough. It’s located up a hill in old Nice, please make sure to call the hotel beforehand to let them know when you are at the bottom of the hill - they will bring a golf cart to pick you and your luggage up. The ambience here is absolute perfection - minimalist, vintage French country vibe done beautifully. We love the design of the rooms as well as the courtyard, restaurants, and garden. The Roman baths/sauna were so relaxing; we enjoyed it so much we went every day. They also offer free yoga classes daily! Service was amazing as well, everyone seemed very happy to be working there. Overall 10/10, would stay here again!

My wife and I recently spent four nights at Hôtel du Couvent to celebrate our wedding anniversary, and we could not have chosen a better hotel for this special occasion. The hotel, which resides in an old convent at the foot of Castle Hill in Nice, is all about discreet luxury and understated elegance. It is a secluded sanctuary, even though it is literally only steps away from the hustle and bustle of Vieux Nice. We loved everything about the hotel - the simply but tastefully appointed rooms, the perfectly maintained gardens, the sumptuous breakfast, the private beach, the Roman baths - but it was the impeccable service we received from the concierge Clotilde (who is a member of the prestigious Les Clefs d'Or) and the entire hotel team that made our stay truly unforgettable. Nice is indeed the coolest city in the French Riviera, and staying at Hôtel du Couvent just elevated our whole experience to another level. We will be back!

We had a wonderful stay at Hotel du Couvent in Nice. From the moment we arrived, we felt genuinely welcomed — the atmosphere is calm, elegant, and full of charm, with so many beautiful details. Breakfast was a highlight, especially the fresh, flavorful bread. While driving to the hotel can be challenging due to its location in the old town, the staff handled everything seamlessly with their excellent valet service and convenient golf cart pickup. Their attention to detail and warm hospitality made our stay truly memorable. We would love to return!

My sister and I stayed at the property for 5 days each of us with a child, mine 4 and her’s 8. From the moment we arrived we were completely taken care of. Being greeted with Madeline’s and fresh juice for the children as they ran around the property curiously looking at the herbs and lemon trees. Told there was a kids club upon arrival and it’s open daily for the children. As we were escorted to our rooms we were welcomed with more surprises for the children including lovely children’s products for the bath, specialty robes and coloring books. As the trip went on we made our way to the kids club daily. Located by the spa, two warm and welcoming young ladies greeted us with a room full of arts and crafts, games and books. They take the children to the garden so they can pick herbs and see more of property. They offer a beautiful daily lunch and take the children to the restaurant to eat. The ease of it all truly let my sister and I have a few hours everyday to decompress and really enjoy this incredible property. If you’re traveling with your family I highly recommend staying. The property is stunning. From the accommodations, service, to the food and breathtaking views. You truly can’t get enough and never want to leave.

Amazing hotel in the centre of Nice Old Town. Hotel du Couvent offers a sanctuary away from the city whilst still being centrally located and walking distance from all restaurants, bars, attractions in the Old Town + a short walk to the sea. Highly recommend if you’re looking for an up market stay in Nice. ||All the facilities are of high quality and standard. The food is top notch with a nice variety of drinks served from the bar all day and night. Elisa from the concierge team is excellent if you’re looking for local recommendations on what to do. Elisa helped us in making restaurant and beach club reservations and always exceeded our expectations, we highly recommend speaking to her upon your arrival. The entire Valet and guest arrivals teams were excellent throughout our stay. Always remaining attentive and helpful to anything we required. We will be back!

Our room was beautiful with a view of the old city. Amenities were always replenished, spa was peaceful with the pools clean and beautiful. ||Some aspects of the property and operations left us a bit confused. The pool is a pretty decent walk uphill from the main property — lounge chairs and pool itself were lovely but there was no chair setup service and we were unfortunately left waiting for 10 minutes with no attendant around or towels to be used. ||The concierge often seemed confused about who was responsible for which guest - probably a result of the casual outdoor setting of the reception desk.||Ubers and cabs often can’t directly access the hotel but unfortunately the hotel team didn’t communicate that to us until we were stressed and running late to a wedding event. It’s lovely that they offer golf cart services to the bottom of town but that wasn’t explained when we checked in, only when we were scrambling with the taxi/uber. ||The hotel would benefit from more consistent staffing of the pool area, a more organized concierge team and clear communication of transportation logistics.

Absolute insanity this place isn’t a perfect 5 star rating. I have never stayed anywhere more luxurious, a place that felt more serene or heaven-like than this place. From the moment you walk in to this hotel, it feels different from anywhere else you have ever stayed. Check in was smooth and the staff were efficient and professional. The pool in the garden was spectacular, tucked quietly away above old Nice. The Roman Baths are the perfect way to end the day, and a beautiful and unique space to relax in. The service staff are kind, considerate, and extraordinarily helpful. Every need we could have possibly had attended to was fulfilled almost instantly. We can’t wait to stay here again.

Nice is a stunning city, but it definitely lacked a modern and trendy spot like this. The interior design reminds me of Soho House — very stylish and inviting. The food and cocktails were absolutely delicious. The only downside was the speed of service — it was quite slow. I believe we were ready to spend twice as much, but the waiter didn’t quite capitalize on that opportunity, even though he was knowledgeable and knew the ingredients of every dish perfectly. All in all, I want to wish the creators of this place great success — it’s clear that a lot of effort and resources were invested. I truly hope you go on to be very successful!
