16 Best Hotels in Iceland, From Rural Lodges to Reykjavik Boutiques | Condé Nast Traveler

"Set in a historic 1867 home in the picturesque town of Stykkishólmur, Hotel Egilsen charms with cheery red exteriors, mismatched antique furnishings, and a nostalgic, homey vibe inspired by the sea and fishing industry; I appreciated the hotel’s literary bent—a library of Nordic folk tales and Icelandic poetry—and the invitation for guests to jot down and publish their own tales on the hotel website." - Erika Owen, James Taylor

Hotel Egilsen | Best places to stay in Iceland

"If it’s a slice of Icelandic heritage you’re after, then this delightful harbourside hotel in Stykkisholmur will be right up your street. The handsome, timber-clad building dates from 1867, and has been renovated with taste and a discerning eye for vintage design. Retro furniture, old maps, Icelandic books and sheepskin blankets adorn the lounge, and the ten rooms mirror the upcycled, mix-and-match style. Unlike many Icelandic hotels, which are heavy on style but light on cosiness, the emphasis here is on creating a warm, welcoming space – it feels more like staying with Icelandic friends than the impersonality of a chic hotel. Very nice Poland lady at the reception . Helpful and warm-heart. The hotel located at the very central place, just by the port. There are several restaurant around. In the high season it’s better to book the table in advance. Otherwise you will only eat fast food like us. 😂 Hotel room is small but comfortable and clean, and pretty new.

Such a friendly and quirky hotel. Our best in Iceland. Personal greeting and breakfast prepared for a specific time. Delicious smoothie. Bedroom was relatively spacious and shower excellent. Bed comfy. Room 5 had views over harbour.

A sweet and simple accommodation for laid back travelers looking for something different when exploring the Snæfellsnes peninsula. It's a charming little inn and town. The people who work here are very nice. The beds were very comfortable. Get the breakfast (it’s comprehensive) and don’t worry if you’re assigned a room on the ground floor (there is no street noise, there are no safety concerns and the views are quaint). The bathrooms do lack privacy, as noted by a previous reviewer—and because it’s an old house you can hear people walking around above you, etc. An overnight here is especially great when combined with dinner at the excellent and upscale fish restaurant next door, Sjávarpakkhúsið (be sure to check out their website and make reservations in advance). We would happily return.

Stayed for one night and absolutely loved it. Charming, great service and fantastic breakfast with all sorts of homemade food. A nice change from the sprawling buffets at the other hotels we stayed in. We were even offered extra food after breakfast to make up a picnic lunch for free, including smoked salmon and homemade hummus.|The room, while small, was very clean and well-appointed. Cozy bathroom but clean and modern.

What a wonderful hotel: the most friendly and helpful staff; bedroom was lovely with fabulous views; comfortable and well-equipped; and the breakfast was amazing. If you are catching the ferry it is literally 1-minute drive from the terminal. Would recommend the 'street food' kiosk on the harbour side, great food. A definite yes to this lovely hotel.

After a long and bumpy drive from the Westfjords, the warmest possible welcome by Marta, the lady with a nice Polish smile; professional, polite, informative and kind. The best of a cozy, charming place. Single rooms in the upper floor not fully fitted for tall guys...but a minor drawback.

The shower was the best we had in Iceland! Very hot and excellent pressure. The room was small but clean; the bed medium comfortable. The staff was excellent and really helped with trip planning. The town is a long drive from sights on the Snaefellsnes peninsula, so consider that when booking. But the town is lovely and there is a nice walk above the ferry pier with an outlook toward the Westfjords. This is more of a bed and breakfast (without the breakfast) than a hotel. As with other things in Iceland, it is very expensive and not a good value when judged against other lodging of similar quality in other places.
