Oaxaca's Hotels Know How to Stay Unique

"Hotel Escondido is “barefoot luxe” at its apex, a sort of impossibly stylish version of beach-bum living, its sixteen bungalows smallish and spare but perfectly formed. The restaurant serves can’t-miss local seafood, the bar shows off the Habita talent for hospitality, and the pool lounge mixes modern design with the most primitive of elements, to the greatest possible effect." - Mark Fedeli

Where To Stay Along Mexico's Pacific Coast

"Grupo Habita made its name over the past two decades with boutique hotels of the high-design variety; thanks to Carlos Couturier and Moisés Micha, the Mexican hospitality scene could boast some of the most stylish hotels anywhere. Less polished than its urban sisters — though no less memorable — is Hotel Escondido, a minimal-rustic beachfront boutique hotel on Oaxaca’s Pacific coast." - Mark Fedeli

12 Secluded Bungalows in Mexico for Your Next Beach Vacation

"Puerto Escondido is a surf hotspot that remains one of Mexico’s best beach towns and Hotel Escondido is one of the best places to stay. Just 30 minutes north of town, 16 cabins (with private pools, hammocks and sun beds) are spread out among a beach that’s ideal for surfing and swimming. The small resort is owned by Grupo Habita, so while the look and amenities are in-tune with the locale’s unspoiled setting, the hotel doesn’t lack in creature comforts or beautiful nature." - Travel + Leisure Editors

We stopped by to inquire about a room and nearby places. We travel quite a lot and dress appropriately. The reception (a male and a female) seemed too busy to assist us with a feeling of being off putting. When we asked about having dinner, they advised that they were full and left it at that. I went online and learned that they weren't. We ended up at the nearby Terrestre hotel and were treated very nicely. Dinner outside was terrific. ⁸

Such a beautiful place, but then staff at the front desk were so incredibly rude! They didn’t think we spoke Spanish and over heard them talking poorly about us. We tried to cancel our super expensive stay there after so many issues between the room and management staff , they wanted to charge a ridiculous amount of money to add a person to the room, unfortunately we couldn’t cancel and made the best of it. The staff at the restaurant were nice and laughed when we made the joke about Chef Ratatouille (yes there were rats running through the restaurant and into the foliage). Oh also! No cell service and driving out to where the hotel is was so scary, anyone could disappear from there and never be seen again) the next food/ convenience store was 15 min drive.

Wonderful resort. 18 cabanas. All have private plunge pool.|Very rustic. AC doesn't really work - just rely on fan - you can ask for an extra fan if needed. Open concept palapa roof so geckos come in and out - it's ok - they don't cause humans any harm. |Sandy trails so if you are not good with walking, this is not your place.|On the road, there are many places to visit: other hotels, restaurants and art galleries. Food at the hotel is very good. Service is spotty. Use WhatsApp to communicate with front desk for all needs. Spa services were good.|We did have an unexpected scorpion come into the bathroom - luckily there vs the bedroom because it was easy to see on the concrete bathroom floor. Just always wear flip flops.

This hotel is a pure dream. The design is beautiful and thoughtful. The location is perfectly central. The rooms are bright, super clean spacious and comfortable. ||Above all, the staff is incredible. From the moment you walk in the door you are in another world. We didn't want to leave!

This hotel is an excellent example of the beauty and peacefulness of this area. The hotel takes extra care with everything it does and we have visited in years past and you can see they have made improvements in guest services, hotel room decor and quality of experience. The food, the omakase, casa Wabi are all incredible experiences and you should explore all of them if you’re lucky enough to stay at this lovely hotel. Bring bug spray. Otherwise they provide nearly everything you would need to enjoy your stay.

The hotel has three great ingredients: small, hard to get to (dirty road for 20 min from main road) and (beach) luxurious. Don’t believe the bad service reviews: the staff is great: dedicated, fun and very sweet. Still the pace of service is Mexican which does invite the wise to relax! The hotel is overdue a refurbishment but in a shabby chic way! We had an amazing time swimming in the pool while looking at the pristine and wild sea (no swimming in the warm sea - dangerous). Food was very good! It is a little piece of paradise!

I agree with so many other reviews. This place is overpriced. We never felt welcomed or looked after by the staff. It is self-service here - if you want a drink or a lounge chair mattress at the pool you need to wander around and find someone. There is quite a language difficulty for example I ordered an English Breakfast tea with milk and was given a camomile tea with honey. At no stage did the staff engage with us and recommend activities etc and we were never told about the Japanese restaurant being a dinner option. We did the half board package and the dinners were extremely disappointing with just 2 options for each course. One night we were the only table in the restaurant which made for poor atmosphere!|The pool is beautiful and the cocktails are nice.|This hotel is VERY remote. 45m in a|tax to the town (which is worth a visit).

Hotel Escondido needs some serious Management review . We stayed there over the new Year and must say the regular staff is very nice. But checking in and checking out is a mess . The whole front desk is a mess . Every time you would need something please brace yourself. There is no general management that proper trained people. Just very scattered. The beach is super nice and quiet. Food and beverage very slow and just okay. I really believe if the staff get some structure and training program in place it’s a good place because they do care .

Yelp
Super cool vibe! I've never stayed in a bungalow-type room, which was a neat experience. The grounds are immaculate & the healthy lifestyle of eating was much needed for me, at least for a stint!

Yelp
Slow and inconsistent service at the pool and restaurant. Food was very good. Massage menu is pointless as they just do whatever they want-- which is quite rough and painful (pass on that for next time). Beautiful location. Quiet. Generally relaxing. Too many other (better) hotel options, so my wife and I won't return.
