Otočec Castle

"This luxury hotel and restaurant in a spectacular and tranquil location in the middle of the Krka river occupies a charming 13C castle that was demolished and then rebuilt for the purpose. Antiques, a delightful bar with a fireplace and soft comfortable sofas all combine to create the feel of bygone days in the attractive dining room. The cuisine is regional and traditional, featuring carefully prepared dishes (the chicken with fregola pasta is delicious) and fresh vegetables sourced from the restaurant’s organic kitchen garden. Both the à la carte and the tasting menus follow the seasons. To round off your visit in truly aristocratic style, stay in one of the hotel’s luxurious guestrooms." - Michelin Inspector

"A magical, 700-year-old Gothic island castle hotel set in the middle of the Krka river that feels like a fairy-tale escape; guests can explore surrounding forests and villages by bike in the morning and return for gourmet, candlelit dinners by a wood-burning fire at night, with lively university-town Ljubljana not far away for extra activities in October." - Annie Fitzsimmons

Hotel Grad Otočec is a truly special place — set on a small island nestled between two gentle streams of the Krka River, surrounded by lush greenery and serene nature. The setting is straight out of a fairy tale and offers a peaceful, relaxing escape from the outside world.||From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed with warm hospitality. A lovely lady at the reception greeted us in the beautiful castle lobby, brought us a glass of champagne, and personally took care of our check-in while retrieving our luggage from the car. This level of service set the tone for the rest of our stay.||Our room was spacious and very clean, with a large bathroom and thoughtful amenities. While I personally would have preferred furniture with a bit more historical charm to match the character of the castle, the room was nonetheless elegant and comfortable. The complimentary minibar (soft drinks and water), coffee machine, and excellent nightly turndown service were all appreciated touches.||We stayed for both dinner and breakfast, and dinner was nothing short of exceptional — truly Michelin star quality in both taste and presentation. Breakfast was also delightful, served with the same warmth and care by the attentive staff.||The front desk and restaurant staff were consistently kind, professional, and helpful throughout our stay. Their genuine hospitality really enhances the overall experience.||All in all, Hotel Grad Otočec is one of the best hotels we've stayed at in Slovenia — a perfect blend of nature, comfort, and refined service. Highly recommended for anyone seeking a luxurious yet tranquil getaway.||

Historic castle in a park setting with swans floating by on the river so a charming first impression. A lovely stone courtyard. The room was ok, all dark wood and fairly small considering the price. Our big disappointment was the food. The breakfast was fine and in fact we enjoyed the treat of local smoked trout. We had booked a package with a dinner and that’s where we felt disappointed. Most of the dishes were fairly mediocre- we expected more from a Michelin rated place. The server was young and enthusiastic but needed more training as service was not very professional. Two dishes that did stand out were 1) a “ deconstructed” caprese salad with basil ice cream and 2) a dessert which was not only beautifully presented but very good, and I am not usually one for merengue based pastries. Photos of both included. One outstanding offering of the hotel was the chance to go to an affiliated spa. We picked the one about 1/2 hour away because the hotel staff said it was the nicer one; it was very large with many choices and excellent massages at a fair price ( only had to pay for massages). The hotel receptionists were all exceedingly nice and helpful- gold stars to all of them. We took a several hour hike one day- not a lot else to do in the area.We went out of our way while in Slovenia to have this unique stay and I am not sorry we did but I’d more recommend it if you are going to be in the area anyhow, rather than thinking of it as a destination. It might be okay for a weekend get away if you are fairly local.

We didn’t stay at the hotel, but just seeing the castle on the island in the Krka River was awesome. The whole spot feels special calm river, beautiful castle, and great nature all around. Walking around, we spotted baby swans and ducks, which made it even nicer. The paths are easy to follow and perfect for a relaxed stroll. Even if you don’t stay overnight, it’s definitely worth stopping by to soak in the peaceful vibe and enjoy the view.

Both, the castle and the surroundings are impressive. |The castle hosts a very nice hotel, with excellent food and services.|We enjoyed a 2-nights stay, spending relaxing days in the inner courtyard, the surrounding park and woods, but also visiting the golf course and enjoying a good coffee and fruit tarts on the terrace.|The staff offers outstanding services, while food is prepared by a well-known chef, with work experience in awarded (Michelin) restaurants - as we were told.|Highly recommended while visiting Slovenia.

Amazing place. To sleep in a castle is a unique experience on its own.. The staff was super friendly and room was really nice and spatious. We felt really welcomed. One thing: there is a pool avaliable but not in the castle itself. You have to walk around 6 minutes or drive to a nearby hotel. For us it was not an issue. I would highly recommend!

A castle hotel on an island was totally picturesque and very romantic. Great hikng in the area and impressive castles and exhibits. The room was gothic in terms of furnishings and the air conditioning struggled with the intense heat but we had what we needed. Breakfast was not great with buffet items not refilled. The staff did their work to the most minimal standards possible. It felt like a holdover from Yugoslavia days. Still worth a visit.

Grad Otočec is a true fairytale castle surrounded by serene nature and timeless charm. The beautifully restored architecture, peaceful riverside setting, and elegant interior make it a magical place to visit or stay or for a Wedding. It’s perfect for a romantic getaway or simply to soak in the history and beauty of Slovenia’s only water castle. A unique and unforgettable experience!

Absolutely! Here’s a joyful version: "Oh my goodness, it was absolutely FANTASTIC! Just picture this: a heart-shaped cake paired with delicious strawberry ice cream, and to top it all off, a hint of pepper in ice cream. Apple pie with vanilla ice cream 😍 It was simply amazing—such a delightful treat that made my heart sing!"
