Hotel Indigo Hakone Gora

"Why did this hotel catch your attention? What's the vibe? Hotel Indigo Hakone Gora, Japan's first "anti-ryokan," is an upbeat hangout for international travelers and in-the-know weekenders from Tokyo and Kyoto who want to sip designer lattes, listen to DJs, and take a dip in a swimming pool filled with warm, mineral-y onsen water. What's the backstory? The first Indigo in Japan wants to disrupt the staid, polite ryokan atmosphere pervasive in the hamlets outside of Tokyo. Its smiley service and loud attitude has birthed a new breed of weekend getaway. Tell us all about the accommodations. Any tips on what to book? Rooms are thoroughly Western in style, which might come as a surprise for travelers in search of tatami, but you'll get your very own wooden soaking tub filled with onsen water—and, let's face it, that's the best part of a ryokan, anyway. Is there a charge for Wi-Fi? Free wifi. Drinking and dining—what are we looking at? This might be the only place in Hakone where you can get a steak frites. The Kiwi chef—who cut his teeth in the competitive Bangkok dining scene—is gunning to clog your arteries with his colossal truffle mac 'n' cheese. And the service? Service is warmer and more personalized than that of traditional ryokans. What type of travelers will you find here? Hip Tokyoites and their kids. Is there anything you'd change? The property is offering a very specific experience; if it's not to your liking, go elsewhere. Any other hotel features worth noting? Be sure to ask about the local woodworking tradition that involves complex geometric tiling—it's hidden all over the hotel. Bottom line: Worth it? Why? This hotel is a fun friends' getaway in the heart of Hakone." - Brandon Presser

Hotel Indigo Hakone Gora (Hakonemachi, Ashigarashimo-gun, Kanagawa Prefecture) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"A setting like this, along the banks of the Haya River, seems like the perfect setting for a traditional ryokan. But the Hotel Indigo Hakone Gora isn’t interested in being a traditional ryokan. Make no mistake — in the abstract, many of the ingredients are in place, from the soothing waters of the spring-fed onsen baths to the perfectly framed forest views. But this is a modern, boutique-influenced hotel through and through, and it’s visible not only in the design, which makes liberal use of modern furniture, graphic art, and non-traditional colors, but in the sheer eclecticism of its international influences." - Tablet Hotels

I can’t speak highly enough of the staff here. They truly went above and beyond for us; so many little touches that made the stay so special. It’s been the best experience I’ve had of anywhere I’ve ever stayed in the world because of the people. I felt like a VIP. Thank you 🙏 The room was extremely spacious with fridge, ironing board, and kettle/tea/coffee & water. The room also had a private bath (it did overlook a car park and was a bit small for two people but not the end of the world; there’s a public bath too and a foot bath outdoors). There’s a gym with basic equipment (1-12kg dumbbells and a set of 22kg dumbbells with one bench, plenty of cardio machines & yoga mats, and a cable machine). They play peaceful music with a nice collection of beautiful scenery while you work out. The cable machine has limited attachments (handles and one ankle/wrist strap only). There’s a shuttle to take you to the train station (you can walk, but be aware it’s a lot of stairs to go up! It’s easier to walk back down from the train station after your day out!). You’ll find a 7/11 close by and a few local shops. The food in the restaurant is top quality; as someone who likes leaner meat well-done you will not be disappointed here. I’m still dreaming of the venison. At breakfast if you’re early you might get a table by the window overlooking part of the river. If you walk a short way you’ll get some epic nighttime photography of the waterfalls.

Hotel Indigo Gora Hakone was absolutely outstanding from start to finish. The hotel perfectly blends modern design with subtle Japanese touches, creating a relaxing and upscale atmosphere that feels both luxurious and welcoming. Our room was spacious, beautifully designed, and impeccably clean, with stunning views of the surrounding mountains. The private onsen-style bath was a true highlight, nothing beats soaking while taking in Hakone’s peaceful scenery. The staff were warm, attentive, and genuinely eager to help, making us feel well cared for throughout our stay. Breakfast was excellent, offering a thoughtful mix of Japanese and Western options, all made with high-quality ingredients. The location is ideal for exploring Hakone, with easy access to Gora and nearby attractions, yet quiet enough to feel like a serene retreat. This hotel exceeded our expectations in every way and made our Hakone experience unforgettable. We would absolutely stay here again and highly recommend it to anyone visiting the area.

I had a wonderful stay at Hotel Indigo Hakone, and it truly exceeded my expectations. The room was beautifully designed and impeccably clean, creating a very comfortable and relaxing atmosphere from the moment I arrived. One of the highlights of my stay was the private onsen in the room — it was well-maintained, soothing, and perfect for unwinding while enjoying complete privacy. The staff and room service were exceptional. Every interaction was warm, professional, and attentive. Requests were handled promptly, and the staff consistently went above and beyond to ensure my stay was pleasant and seamless. Their hospitality genuinely made me feel welcomed and well taken care of. Overall, Hotel Indigo Hakone offers an excellent balance of comfort, cleanliness, and outstanding service. I highly recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a relaxing and high-quality stay in Hakone, and I would definitely return again.

Our stay at Hotel Indigo Gora Hakone was absolutely wonderful and a highlight of our time in Hakone. From the moment we arrived, the staff were welcoming, attentive, and genuinely eager to ensure we had a memorable experience. The hotel beautifully blends modern design with thoughtful nods to Japanese culture, creating a stylish yet relaxing atmosphere. Our room was spacious, immaculately clean, and incredibly comfortable, with stunning views of the surrounding mountains. The private onsen in the room was a true luxury—perfect for unwinding after a day of exploring. Dining was another standout. Both breakfast and dinner were beautifully presented and delicious, featuring fresh local ingredients and a great balance of Japanese and international flavors. The attention to detail throughout the property really shows. The location in Gora is peaceful and convenient, making it easy to explore Hakone while still feeling like a quiet retreat. Overall, Hotel Indigo Gora Hakone exceeded our expectations in every way. We would happily return and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a refined, relaxing stay in Hakone.

Google
The hotel is luxury and the breakfast is tasty too! On a god day the view outside is amazing and you can watch the waterfalls while you bathe in the private hot spring bath. If you have more people in your party visiting this place you can even connect your rooms together through a door! The rooms are comfortable and nice. The only thing is that from the Gora Station you have to walk ten minutes through a mountain and steep staircases which isn’t that ideal but if you have a car you can drive there easily.

Google
This was our first hotel where we were still adjusting to the time difference. Parked the car and was welcomed with two staff to take the bags. Receptionist was excellent, who then guided us to the lift, leaving us with a deep bow. What an excellent start. The room overlooked the river, was spacious and the bed was comfortable. Breakfast had plenty of choice and the staff were good. Dined here twice. Waitress was excellent on first meal, always busy. Second one was a bit dippy, though I get there may have been language issues. Location is below Gora station with a steep staircase to it. That is demanding but the hotel does offer transit. Spa was lovely, so so hot. Overall a good hotel away from the madness of Hakone central but easy access to the famous loop.

Google
Very upmarket hotel in Hakone, a quiet little town nestled in the hills. The hotel is very pleasant with good size rooms that are nicely decorated and functional, and you have your own private onsen on your (enclosed private) balcony. I understand that there is a mixed onsen (bathers to be worn) on site as well although I did not frequent that. In the colder months it is very ‘cosy’ inside with nice views of the mist and drizzle outside whist enjoying your favourite beverage. The restaurant serves excellent food off a varied menu. Breakfast is excellent and the staff are very helpful. There is not much going on in Hakone, it is quiet but there is the ubiquitous 7-11 nearby along with a Sushi and Chinese restaurant within easy walking distance.

We stayed for 2 nights and the overall experience was good. The staff was friendly and helpful. Quality of the breakfast and dinner were great . We were happily served by staff Seiya at the Firewood restaurant and was satisfied with his service. He tried his best to present the food in English and we were impressed by his efforts. Please relay our thanks and appreciation to him who need support and encouragement. The only improvement is to clearly inform guests beforehand the location of the shuttle bus waiting stop. Thanks again for their service and we shall visit again.

Yelp
Hotel Indigo will stay in my heart as a beloved part of my trip to Gora, Hakone. It definitely was the most expensive hotel during my two week trip in Japan, but absolutely well worth the cost. Being one of the only hotels in the region with thermal hot springs that is tattoo friendly. I had originally booked a room with two twin beds with a private onsen through American Express The Hotel Collection. This allowed me to tap into an addition $100 credit, which almost covered 2 daily buffet brunches for 2 people. Upon check-in the friendly staff also informed me that they upgraded the room type. I believe it ended up being the same footprint but had a separate bathroom/toilet area as their shower. Upon entering the beautiful hotel, we were escorted off the complimentary shuttle bus from Odawara station (note that it runs exactly to the minute, so please be there 5-10 mins early), and escorted to the waiting area where they had self-serve welcome beverages. I poured myself and my partner glasses of Champagne while we waiting a short 7-10 minutes for them to check us in. The location and amenities offered definitely make this hotel stand out. It's a perfect location to nest in when you're wishing to visit the countless museums and exhibits all around the Hakone region. Within a short 7-10 minute walk, you can get to Gora station and take the rail down towards the shops or up towards the tram area. During our visit we also noticed a lot of photographs from various museums capturing cherry blossoms. I believe that it's a sought after location for cherry blossom season and for their natural hot springs. During late fall/early winter the mountain area has dazzling marigold, auburn, crimson, and evergreen colors that are truly awe-inspiring. Thank you for taking good care of us, Hotel Indigo.

Yelp
Of the four hotels we stayed at during our Japan trip, Hotel Indigo in Hakone was by far my favorite. Service is fantastic and the staff works hard to make you comfortable from the moment you check in. Hakone is known for its hot springs, and this hotel has both shared as well as private onsens. Each room has a private onsen and there's a 150 yen (around $1) onsen fee per person per night. You bet we used ours every night. Our room was large and blended traditional and modern elements. It had all the expected amenities, and I loved the shoji (sliding latticed doors) that could be closed to separate the dwelling area from the sink and shower area. Past the bathroom area was the door leading out to the balcony where our onsen was. Everything from the bed to the shower to the onsen water was very comfortable. The breakfast buffet was a splurge, but we enjoyed the variety and quality of the food. The items were more upscale than what you'd find at a typical hotel. If you're looking for a variety of traditional Japanese dishes and light bites, this is your place. Downstairs is also an average fitness center and a co-ed onsen (bathing suits required there). The hotel provides a complimentary shuttle to and from Odawara Station, which is the closest JR station. There's also a free shuttle to and from Gora Station, where you can take a cable car up to Ōwakudani (volcanic valley with active sulphur vents) and down to the picturesque Lake Ashinoko. There's so much to see and explore in this area. Whatever you're here for, Hotel Indigo has you covered. Though it used up all of our hotel points, I'm glad we decided to book a 3-day stay here!

Yelp
From the moment we arrived until the moment we departed, we were treated warmly and thoroughly welcomed. The staff are very friendly and kind, and very helpful. The hotel itself is beautiful. I loved the traditional decor. The room and the view were both gorgeous and relaxing. Private onsen was a godsend after exploring all day. I would 100% stay here again.

Yelp
Amazing hotel with great service. We stayed here two nights and everything we needed was at the hotel. The front desk was super friendly and helpful. The restaurant on premises is amazing! We went there for dinner both nights and had breakfast there as well. Food was delicious! The best Wagyu steaks ever-melting in your mouth! The rooms were nice and clean, everything you might need was there. We loved the private onsen on the balcony and the hotel spa area. The hotel is a little secluded from everything else in the area but they do provide shuttle. We only left once to go to a water park but otherwise our stay was amazing. Highly recommend it!

Yelp
Excellent service across the board, at check in, in the bar, at the restaurant and even from the shuttle driver. Undeniably a great lodging choice in Hakone and I very much recommend!

Yelp
The Hotel Indigo is a lovely mixture of both western and japanese styles in a beautiful private and public onsen-type of hotel. The staff is lovely and very helpful. They have a shuttle service that is complimentary but only runs from certain hours (morning to early evening) so make sure you do you things during those times. If you don't they'll try their best to book a taxi for you but there are no guarantees. It is a pretty difficult hike to get back to the train station. Breakfast was very delicious as well - buffet style - but not included. They cook fresh vegetables over their woodfire grill and then have a variety of well-done western and japanese dishes. The public onsen is clothing on and they will rent you a swimsuit for 500Yen.

Yelp
After the chaos and busyness of Tokyo Disney, Hotel Indigo is the perfect place to rest and reset. The hotel isn't in the heart of Hakone and isn't traditional Japan, but I selected this hotel because there is a free shuttle to take you from the train station to the hotel, it's more western and spacious, and it's walking distance to the train/bus stop. I would definitely return and recommend Hotel Indigo. - We arrived before check in time but it was no problem at all. The lounge was packed with snacks and refreshments, we got checked in, and they gave us a tour of the hotel. We even had our luggage shipped from a previous hotel and it was already waiting for us in the room. - There were really nice amenities at front desk, including facial products and local wood blocks that make the in room onsen more fragrant. - The hotel has a gym, an outdoor foot bath, and a co-ed onsen. I wasn't expecting a co-ed onsen area so we were able to rent bathing suits even for kids. The co-ed onsen has a big LED screen so it wasn't as naturesque as normal onsens but it's ok to me. The outdoor foot bath was nice and you can order drinks from the bar but it wasn't too kid friendly because at one point my little one was almost sitting in the water (face palm). - When we weren't out exploring or eating, we spent the entire time in the room onsen. It was so peaceful with the river sounds and slight breeze. Try to get a room on the river side because the mountain side is completely enclosed. - The rooms are so spacious. We were able to have friends hang out in the room for drinks. - Get the breakfast buffet! There's a mix of western and traditional Japanese breakfast foods, and they offer different varieties every day so you're not eating the foods. They even have local citruses to offer!

Yelp
A luxe hotel that offers complimentary shuttle service to/from Gora station, making it easy for us to get to the hotel. There were quite a bit of traffic on the way there, so it took a little over an hour to reach the hotel. It was much faster on the return trip (around 30-40 minutes). We got a room with a private onsen. It was nice, but not much of a view. Also, the set-up where the primary vanity/shower is located can be a bit treacherous. It has a step up leading to the area, and it blends in with the floor so we can quite a few missteps! I imagine it can be somewhat dangerous to someone with poor balance. There is a small gym with limited equipment, but it felt rather spaced out. There's also a public onsen for both genders (so bathing suits required) as well as a foot onsen. I didn't vist the public onset as we had our own, but did check on the foot onsen. It was rather basic and I left quickly as people were smoking cigars in the area. The hotel also offers complimentary car service to places in Gora but only between the hours of 10AM to 6PM. We utilized it once during our stay. It's convenient, but again, only during the hours mentioned above. While the hotel was nice, there wasn't much to do in the surrounding area. There are a few shops nearby but they do close relatively early (around 4PM typically).

Yelp
We stayed here for one night with a two year old son. The hotel provides complimentary pick up anywhere in Gora so we requested the service upon arrival at Gora station. The van came quickly and the driver was extremely nice. Upon arrival to the hotel, we were greeted by another staff who walked us to the check in area and gave us some tea. The hotel is beautiful.. the entry, dining area, thermal spa area, and the rooms. We ordered room service on the first night and dinner was delicious. The hospitality provided were excellent. The hotel located on a hill and is quite a distant to walk from Gora station but the fact that shuttle service is provided for pick up and drop off anytime until 6pm made it so convenient. I would highly recommend staying here and we will definitely be if we return to Hakone in the future.

Stan L.

Yelp
Excellent and extremely quiet and relaxing. Front desk service was excellent. Very convenient to transportation and shopping.

Yelp
This hotel was extremely accommodating and very attuned to providing great customer service. Every time we moved within the hotel it decided to venture out, someone was there to assist. This is a hidden gem in the mountain and I highly recommend staying here for a great family friendly get away.
