Hotel Iturregi

"Set atop a verdant hill 15 miles west of San Sebastián, this country retreat is a seductive reason to leave the Basque city behind. Outside, vineyards lead down past traditional Basque farmhouses and the odd grazing cow to a coast carved with dramatic rock formations and dotted with lighthouses. Indoors, the view is no less idyllic. Well-appointed public areas—filled with inviting sofas and interesting art—make you feel like you’re in the home of a friend with very good taste. The illusion continues upstairs in the hotel’s eight rooms. The Art Nouveau zinc fireplace turned bathroom sink in the Zarautz Room is a good example of the hotel’s eclectic aesthetic: intriguing antiques combined with the occasional piece of modern art. Not everything is perfect—on a recent visit, one towel heater didn’t work and the Wi-Fi connection was spotty—but the warmly attentive staff make up for any glitches. The hotel lacks a restaurant (though a restorative breakfast is served in a sunny dining room)."

Hotel Iturregi, Near Getaria, Spain - Explore & Book

"It’s hard to fault this small hotel. It sits in the hills above the pretty coastal town of Getaria, with views across vineyards to the sea beyond. It’s a very private place. You potter up the hill, turn onto a track, then wait for electric gates to swing open. When you arrive, you find an old Basque farmhouse reborn as an English country house. This is a total renovation, no expense spared, a house filled with beautiful things. It’s contemporary in design, yet traditional in spirit. Bedrooms are sublime, as are the staff.Everywhere you go, windows frame the view. There’s a lovely sitting room that opens onto a covered terrace where vast sofas wait. You’re in 20 acres of peace with gardens that roll off towards private woods. Climb some steps to one side and you find a gorgeous swimming pool with loungers under parasols and lavender in the flowerbeds. Back inside, the breakfast room opens onto a sun-trapping terrace, not a bad spot to start your day. Upstairs, 8 beautiful rooms and suites pamper you rotten. Some have sea views, others overlook the pool, and all have gorgeous bathrooms. Highs The peaceful position in the hills, with the sea at the end of the fieldsA great base for exploring the Basque Country: Getaria, a lovely old town with a pretty beach, is only 3km away, and San Sebastián, Bilbao and Guernica are within easy reachThe fabulous outdoor pool, set within the ruined walls of the former farm The airy interiors, the sumptuous bedrooms, and the heavenly bathrooms - perfect for romance and relaxationThe covered terrace, from which you can see the lights of San Sebastián sparkling at night Lows There’s no restaurant and a smart hotel like this should have one. Luckily, Getaria is easily accessible by taxi and has some excellent eateries The swimming pool only opens for part of the year (mid-June to mid-September)No twin beds, and some rooms have open-plan bathrooms; it's best suited to couples Rooms are expensive in high seasonYou’ll need a car while you’re here" - Tom Bell

Hotel Iturregi | Best places to stay in Basque Country

"Hidden away among the vineyards, 2km from the charming Basque fishing port of Getaria, this exclusive eight-room hotel is set in a typical, half-timbered Basque baserri (farmhouse). Incredibly peaceful and quiet, this is a romantic place to relax and get away from it all, making it popular with couples. The vibe is akin to staying at a friend’s country house: rooms are large and ooze rustic chic, with enchanting views over the rural landscapes. Immediately surrounding the hotel are vines, farmhouses and sheep-filled meadows, while slightly further afield is the spectacular coast, crowned by Getaria’s lighthouse. A superb, locally-sourced breakfast is served al fresco, accompanied by birdsong, but there’s no restaurant. From Getaria you can follow the beautiful coastal path to Zarautz (approx 3km); you’re 20 minutes by car from San Sebastian. There are special two-night packages for touring cyclists or for fashionistas keen to visit the nearby Balenciaga Museum. " - Dana Facaros

We recently spent 7 unforgettable days at Hotel Iturregi with two other couples, and it exceeded every expectation. Tucked into the hills above Getaria, this 8-room boutique hotel is a true hidden gem—offering peaceful luxury, impeccable service, and panoramic views that stretch down to the iconic Getaria lighthouse and fishing village.||From the moment we arrived (greeted warmly at the end of the driveway, as they were expecting us), we felt genuinely welcomed. The staff are exceptional—attentive, professional, and warm. A special thank you to Xabier, whose thoughtful support and local guidance added so much to our experience. His kindness and intuition made us feel more like house guests than hotel clients.||Breakfast each morning was a personalized delight. Whether served in the dining room or out on the patio with its sweeping views, everything was perfectly tailored—our preferences remembered as we sat down.||The grounds are magical—surrounded by vineyards, the entire property exudes calm and quiet elegance. The pool is a true highlight, hidden in a lush, garden-like setting that feels like a private oasis. It's the perfect place to unwind after exploring the region.||Housekeeping was meticulous, and the overall atmosphere of the hotel is one of relaxed refinement. The attention to detail, from fresh flowers to quiet, thoughtful service, is truly world-class.||The location is ideal for day trips throughout the Basque Coast. We enjoyed:||- Incredible pintxos and shopping in San Sebastián’s Old Town||- Outstanding seafood and fine dining in Getaria||- The colorful charm of Hondarribia (on the border with France)||- A picturesque beach in Zarautz, surrounded by surfers and families along the boardwalk||Hotel Iturregi offers a rare blend of natural beauty, refined comfort, and truly exceptional hospitality. It’s the perfect retreat for anyone looking to experience the best of the Basque Country in a peaceful, luxurious setting. Whether relaxing by the pool, enjoying vineyard views, or exploring nearby coastal towns, every moment feels thoughtfully curated. We left planning our return.

The hotel is wonderful - beautiful setting, the rooms are large and beautifully decorated. The pool is lovely as well and the staff super helpful. The only let down is the food. There’s a lack of a proper dinner service (the food wasn’t great) and breakfast was nice but nothing special.

By far one of the nicest hotels I’ve ever come across. Perfect mix between luxury and unpretentiousness. We will be back 100%

Stayed here for a weekend and can't wait to return! Everything was just textbook quiet luxury experience. The hotel is stunningly beautiful and classy: the rooms, the common areas, the pool, the garden, the views. It's also adults only and therefore really quiet and private. We loved how much attention they put into quality of everything that surrounds you, from furniture to food, from bathroom amenities to small details like embroidery on bed linen, towels and even slippers. It's only 4 stars because it doesn't have a restaurant or room service, and the front desk is not 24/7. Other than that it's a quality 5-star service.

Off the scale luxury hotel. Rooms are enormous. The location is so quiet and peaceful. It is a bit remote; you need a taxi to get to Getaria if you want to get out and there is no proper restaurant but the room service is fine if you just want to stay in the hotel. Staff are incredibly helpful. Beautiful place that is pretty perfect

This hotel is graciously designed in a very personalized way, nothing cookie-cutter about it. It is beautifully sited above the charming town of Getaria with views out to the sea beyond. The grounds are expansive and landscaped with interesting plants and flowers. The common rooms are very welcoming with plush seating, warm lighting, and a well-stocked honor bar. Our bedroom and bathroom were both extremely comfortable and good sized. It was slightly drizzly when we were there and we found the hotel to be a warm and cozy oasis but I think it would be even more beautiful on a sunny day. Service was discreet but efficient. We felt very well taken care of. Getaria itself was a great discovery for us. We loved the way the sea crashes in, the great restaurants, especially Elkano, and the interesting history, including the Balenciaga Museum.

This boutique hotel is located in a beautiful green hill close to Getaria and with great views of Txakoli vineyards and the Cantabrian sea. Tranquil surroundings and expansive grounds provide a relaxing ambiance. The architecture of the main building is like a typical basque “caserio”. The rooms are large and comfortable. The facilities include a seasonal pool that is nestled inside an old chapel ruins and surrounded by a garden. Home made tasty breakfast that can be enjoyed inside or outside if the weather is good. Limited options for dinner but especial requests can be accommodated, like having a private dinner at their “secret” kitchen and dinning room. There is an honesty bar with beverages. This is a little paradise for relaxation and we are very lucky to have stayed on three different occasions. The hospitality team is very attentive and helpful. They put us in touch with a local cheesemonger to visit their craft operation in the mountains and buy some of the best Idiazabal cheese around. They can also help you with local Txakoli winery tours.

A little slice of heaven in the hills above Getaria. What a lovely place to unwind and feel totally looked after. Although you need a car to get around we had room service and some lovely wine from their vineyard. Luxury, peaceful and away from the world. Wonderful
