The Kronenschlösschen is one of our absolutely favourite restaurants. We have been going there for 20 years or so and have seen many changes and phases.
There is a new chef in the kitchen and we experienced the ’soft opening‘. The food has a freshness and a lightness which is, frankly, amazing. Gone are the heavy cream-laden offerings which are so often to be found in restaurants that call themselves the best.
Instead the balance between herbs and the underlying base offering was expert and to be found in every course.
On arrival, we were served an excellent champagne, followed by a Riesling Spätlese from 1998, both excellent in their own way, and fitting to the food to be served. Thereafter wines were recommended, but were by no means essential. I, as a philistine, was happy to continue with mineral water, the experts drank the wine and thoroughly enjoyed them.
The Kronenschlösschen has always been famed for its wine list, rightly so. The experts, of which I am decidedly not one, wax lyrical over the breadth and depth of the wines on offer, which can suit every palate and (almost) every budget.
The staff were attentive, friendly and knowledgeable. They were able to give, or find the answers for, every question we had. Even if by asking, we expressed our ignorance. They made us feel comfortable and wanted, from the moment we handed in our coats on arrival, to the end when they were retrieved again.
Johanna Ullrich, the owner, and her team worked hard to ensure that everything ran smoothly. Making service look effortless takes very hard work and great skill.
We throughly and wholeheartedly recommend the Kronenschlösschen as somewhere to go for special occasions. You will be seriously impressed.
