Ten Authentic Tuscan Farmhouse Hotels

"Hotel Le Fontanelle is a quintessentially Tuscan hotel if ever there was one. The unabashed gorgeousness of the stone farmhouse sitting atop a hill, overlooking a sea of sloping vineyards, is the result of the meticulous, years-long renovation of a structure whose pedigree stretches back to the 13th century. Lush terraced lawns, terra-cotta patios, stepping-stone paths that meander through aromatic herb patches and bougainvillea climbing up the stone walls: why rewrite a recipe like this one?" - Mark Fedeli

My partner and I will remember our experience at Hotel Le Fontanelle for the rest of our lives. It was a truly blissful and awe inspiring experience that words just don't seem to bring enough justice to. The location was gorgeous- unlike anything we had ever seen or could've imagined ever seeing. The property itself was straight out of a fairytale with it's vine-covered stone walls and rustic energy, and the staff was exceptionally friendly, professional, and discreet. I could not recommend this experience more, and I truly hope to visit again some time in the future. Thank you, Hotel Le Fontanelle!

Hotel Le Fontanelle was the most beautiful property we visited in Italy! So peaceful, stunning, and unforgettable. We arrived early, and the staff went above and beyond, offering us breakfast, storing our bags, and giving us a place to relax until our room was ready. For our honeymoon, they gifted us prosecco, wine, and a sweet note which was such a thoughtful gesture. Our room was cool and comfortable (though the bed was very firm like concrete and uncomfortable) and the on-site meals were delicious with consistently attentive service. The pool and views were serene and we felt completely at peace. The sunset picnic we booked was not what we expected based on the price (130 euros)... we were just handed a pre-packed *very heavy* basket from behind the front desk and we were told to set it up ourselves and find our own picnic sunset spot on the property (no direct spots with a sunset view and the food was underwhelming). However, our other experiences such as the Vallepicciola winery tour and dinner at their sister property, The Clubhouse, were fantastic with great shuttle service. Overall, despite the bed & picnic experiences, it was still one of the most incredible properties we've ever stayed at and we’d definitely return in a heartbeat!

Unfortunately, this hotel was a miss, especially for the price. Rooms are very small and basic, even when upgraded. The pool loses sun early in the day due to the hills. Ducho, the driver, is a bright spot - he was incredibly helpful and a great conversationalist! Restaurant was great as well. The sister property (Club House) is MUCH better and a gem (we stayed at both).

Beautiful, charming boutique hotel with its own vineyards. We stayed four nights (family of 5) in two rooms and had a wonderful time. The food was excellent, especially the breakfast, which we enjoyed eating outside on the terrasse each morning. |We had an opportunity to use both the indoor and outdoor pools. the views from the outdoor pool are spectacular. The outdoor pool is quite shallow but the water was nicely refreshing. The indoor pool is much deeper and good for exercising in. |The Hotel is small and quiet although children were always made to feel very welcome as the sister site at The Clubhouse is an adults only hotel (though we had no issues dining there in the evening with kids). The benefit of a small hotel is you get to know the staff and our experience with the entire team was very positive. While many of the staff are serving at dinner and again at breakfast, they were always very friendly and responsive despite the long hours many of them work. |Our rooms were on the top floor in the main building and are in a traditional style. The four poster bed had a comfortable matress. We like a very dark room at night and this was easy to achieve given the wooden style shutters. The wall mounted A/C did struggle a little in the high heat but it was never too hot in the evenings even if we didn't quite get to the ideal sleeping temperature. The bathrooms are very clean but probably the most disappointing aspect of what is otherwise a 5 star experience. They are a little dated and the shower head does not produce a wide rainshower which is becoming the standard. The free toiletries were ok, nothing special. |The location is very much in the coutryside but Siena is only about 25 minutes away by car. If you are staying 3-5 nights then the 3 restaurants on site will be more than enough to satisfy you so you don't really need to be concerned about any other dining options close by. |We also signed up for a wine tasting and tour at the Vallepicciola Winery which is under the same ownership as the hotel. It was a very pleasant 3 hours away from the kids. |Overall, we had a wonderful experience at Le Fontanelle, it has all the hallmarks of a well run hotel with positive and energetic staff and great service. I would not hesitate to recommend it.

It pains me to write this review as the hotel itself and the staff were absolutely amazing and nothing short of accommodating, as well as the other restaurants on the grounds and sister hotel La Fontanelle. The grounds and amenities are truly amazing. However, it took a serious left turn when we visited their “Michelin” starred resultant Il Visibio on the last night of our stay. We’ve been fortunate enough to eat at many Michelin starred restaurants around the globe and I can honestly say this was the worst meal I’ve had in my entire life. The food was mostly unappetizing and while I can appreciate the story of each dish, they completely missed the mark on having an appetizing experience. Aside from the disappointing food we received, I got food poisoning and spent the night expelling the €600 we spent. This was likely because the food was that of road kill they found on the local streets: raw pigeon, raw shrimp, raw sheep, rotten fish, etc. I don’t mind paying for a Michelin dinner whether I agree with the flavors or not, but when checking out, we expressed what had happened in regards to the food borne illness and we were told “the food isn’t for everyone”… a disappointing response from staff given the otherwise incredible service we had experienced. Our tour of Italy turned into a true local experience as we had a visit to the Emergency Room to recover from this “one of a kind” dinner. And don’t even think about expressing disappointment or they will treat you like an uncultured annoyance who has no business critiquing their meal. Again, truly pains me to write this as the service from staff was phenomenal and detailed during the meal, although the meal perhaps wasn’t our taste and we respect that completely and remained respectful and open during the entirety of the experience. The true disappointment was in the aftermath of the disaster and the response to it.

Hotel Le Fontanelle is truly magical. The service is incredible—everything is so thoughtfully planned that we never had to worry about a thing. From booking activities to small touches like turn-down service timed while we were at dinner, they handled it all seamlessly. The views are absolutely stunning and somehow never get old. Whether you’re by the pool or enjoying a meal, you’re always looking out over the rolling Tuscan hills. Every detail is done with care. We even saw someone scrubbing the tires of our e-bikes after a ride, and our picnic was packed with everything we could possibly need, all perfectly arranged in a custom backpack. We had to make a few small changes to our booking, and the staff took care of it effortlessly. Everyone we met was so warm and welcoming, always greeting us with a smile. The hotel grounds are gorgeous—vibrant flowers, neatly trimmed gardens, peaceful vineyards, and olive trees everywhere you look. It really feels like the heart of Tuscany. We honestly couldn’t believe how lucky we were to experience such beauty in such a special place. We can’t wait to visit again.

My wife and I started our honeymoon at the Club House and had an awesome stay! The property is so beautiful and quiet and it feels like you have the property to yourself. The food was amazing (some of the best we have ever had). Highly recommend if you are looking for a relaxing stay in Tuscany!

We stayed at Hotel Fontanelle during a Backroads bike trip to Tuscany. The hotel is beautiful. Rooms are large. View from the outdoor restaurant was beautiful. We enjoyed the pool. Service overall was excellent. We also appreciated the complementary bottle of wine from their sister winery which was excellent.

Yelp
Impeccably maintained property and grounds. In every direction you look from this hilltop location is a magical postcard worthy view. Staff is very warm, friendly, helpful, and attentive. Multiple restaurants on the property with dining options from casual to Michelin Star. Food and drink are excellent. We booked an E-Bike tour of the surrounding area through the hotel and had a great casual ride on sparsely traveled local roads) through vineyards and the countryside. E-Bikes power you through the very hilly terrain with ease. ( It would be brutal without them if you're not a serious rider. Traveling off property is a bit inconvenient as taxis are disatched out of Siena and take 30 minutes+. We've been to some very nice properties but I'd say this is the most impressive - not sure how it could be topped.

Yelp
Amazing hotel situated in the beautiful hilly countryside just outside Siena. And when I say amazing, I mean AMAZING! Best hotel experience ever, better than American Ritz hotels. Incredible views, extremely accommodating staff in the reception area and in the 5 star restaurant. Perfectly located outside the busy touristy area but near wonderful wineries. Sitting outside at night under the stars in their outdoor luscious garden was a highlight. Would definitely stay again.
