Le Prieuré

"On the other side of the Rhône, opposite Avignon and the Palais des Papes, the small town of Villeneuve-lès-Avignon also boasts its fair share of monuments, of which Le Prieuré is one such. This old cloister, oozing in charm, provides the perfect foil to enjoy creative cuisine made with first-rate ingredients. The surf and turf combinations are sometimes bold but hit the spot every time (langoustine with rhubarb and Bigorre black pork) thanks to big-boned flavours." - Michelin Inspector

This was our second stay at this property and we would absolutely go back. There is a beautiful garden that makes up their entrance, which leads you to a wonderful shaded courtyard. There is a Michelin starred restaurant attached to the hotel, which also does a great breakfast (I would recommend ordering an omelette, which was always cooked to perfection). The pool is nice and deep, and there is pool side drink service. ||Both rooms we stayed in were great. My only critique would be that the bathrooms need an update, but they are otherwise great accommodations. ||We stayed with our one year old son and he had a blast with the property and the town. They were very nice and had a crib with bedding made up for him. We showed up a bit early for check in and they kindly got us in early so that our son could take a nap.

My wife and I loved this place. Charming, beautiful grounds. Warm, friendly service. We loved hanging out on the hotel grounds. Staff helped us carry bags every step of the way. Convenient parking. If I could offer the hotel one bit of of advice it would be to make the showers / tubs have a barrier (wall or curtain) so water doesn’t get all over the floor — which it can all too easily, even if you’re careful. Besides that — only good things to say. We wish we’d booked another night or 2 (we stayed 3).

Beautiful historic building with a garden in a cute old village near Avignon… but we were a little disappointed. ||1) From parking to the hotel is mostly gravels, and you must drag (or lift and carry) your suitcases on your own. They place something on gravels for the service staff’s trolleys – I wish they do that for the arriving/departing guests as well. 2) Reception was not at all friendly and communicated the bare minimum. When we asked him to call a restaurant and make a reservation, he called, but all he said was “not picking up.” Concierge/reception at a nice small hotel will usually offer to call again or suggest other restaurants. 3) Room was cute, but a bedside lamp was broken, and the view from the window was a tree with a dirty plastic bag tangled. Shower was the biggest problem – it’s small and the glass wall/door have gaps – water will be everywhere on the bathroom floor no matter how careful you shower. Large puddle after every shower, and we had to use a towel as barricade to stop the water from flowing outside the bathroom. 4) I loved the breakfast, and dinner at Le Prieure was very good, however, we’ve had much better experience at other one-star restaurants (or any other restaurants). An hors d’oeuvres described as “vegetables” provided to my vegetarian partner definitely had anchovy or some sort of fish on top… I know it’s difficult to accommodate vegetarian requests in France, but we expected a little more from a one-star restaurant. Not much explanations of the dishes (to be fair, we don’t speak French and servers had difficulty communicating in English), we were charged for something we didn’t order (they took it off the bill later), and bug bites all over me… at the end of the meal, we just thought “why did we decide to spend $400 for a dinner here??”||Most of these things are minor, but considering that this is a hotel with one Michelin Key and a restaurant with one Michelin Star, we expected better. We were in France for a total of 12 days and stayed at 6 hotels ranging from Best Western and Citizen M to 5-star hotels in Cote d’Azur and Paris… and Le Prieure was our least favorite in terms of room and overall hospitality.

As we board the train, I am already missing Le Pierre Baumanière. We had the most amazing stay in room 26 in this hotel. The service is exceptional and the grounds make you feel as if time has stopped completely. It is so peaceful without the need of music as the whispers of cicadas serve as a constant rhythm for this special place. ||The town of Villeneuve-lès-Avignon where the hotel is located is very lovely and while only 10 minutes by bus to the city of Avignon we found ourselves opting to stay in the town for most of our time. We also are very glad we selected this hotel versus the other two 5 star located in city center of Avignon (Hotel La Mirande and Hotel d’Europe) because this felt more like a Michelin-starred sponsored retreat versus any other traditional 5 star located in a city. If you are toying between the three hotels, choose this one. ||The pool is massive and so refreshing and was one of the highlights. The gardens (there is a small but noticeable patch of beautiful lavender) were also magnificent and each evening the staff picks food from the garden for the tasting menu for that evening. The esteemed chef’s energy permeates through the property with the entire stay evoking feelings of a dream. ||Although we didn’t attend, the famous vineyard, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, is located only 30 minutes away by car. ||We also used the trails for running in the morning, which are located at the foot of the town. On the trails, you will walk by horses, locals, and sunflower fields. ||We were able to rely on public transportation the full week since we didn’t have a car, and the bus system was pretty easy to understand from the train station to town to the city of Avignon. Uber is also readily available in the region , which is a plus should you require it. ||The last time we stayed in Provence, we stayed at Crillon Le Brave, owned by the same hotel group that owns the famous Hotel De Crillon in Paris. This was also a great stay, but we preferred le pierre baumanière. The hotel is not only more ideally situated near Avignon, but also had a less pretentious feel with matched levels of sophistication at less of a cost. 10/10.

The chef is amazing! We had dinner here and it is one of the best we have had since many years. Innovative and amazing flavours without making you feel too stuffed at the end of a meal. Loved it. Also very nice staff in the hotel and restaurant. If we are in the area again we will come back just to have dinner here again.

We normally go straight to our house rental after flying in from New York City, but this year we arrived a few days early so we could visit the Saturday brocante in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon. We stayed at Le Prieuré and it was a lovely experience. The hotel has friendly staff, a nice pool, and beautiful grounds. We did not eat at the hotel restaurant this time as we were looking for something more casual, but the restaurant looked excellent. The concierge recommended a nearby place that was a few minuteswalking, which turned out to be exactly what we wanted. If you are visiting Avignon, staying in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon at Le Prieuré is a great option. We hope to return in the future.

A beautiful hotel, if somewhat poorly decorated rooms. I agree with other reviewers that the rooms are very spacious and I was pleasantly surprised to have a terrace off my standard room, but some of the decor elements are very out of place, especially the lighting. The staff was very agreeable and the breakfast was excellent. The location is perfect and is proximate to what I found to be the best attractions in Avignon. The construction next door did damper the tranquility of the property, unfortunately.

An absolute oasis outside of Avignon. Quiet , serene and off the beaten path. Quality resort with very nice amenities and a tremendously accommodating staff. The quality of the tasting menu in the restaurant is stunning. The wine parings were perfect. This is a can’t miss resort. ||We’ll definitely be back on a future trip.

Yelp
The hotel was a perfect base for our travels in Provence. 5 minutes from Avignon and parking is quite easy both in the city and at the hotel. This hotel used to be a priory and still maintains its old cloister and garden. The buildings have been redesigned and modernized for a comfortable luxurious stay. I would highly recommend booking a dinner at the 1 star restaurant during your stay.

Yelp
We stayed in this hotel which was beautiful ! After checking out Avignon and not being enticed by any restaurants in town we decided to eat in our restaurant in our hotel which is an award winning restaurant. Le Prieuré is in a former monastic property situated in the historic town of Villeneuve-Les-Avignon. Pros -Beautifully prepared unique food - great Service - Great for outdoor dinning in the summer months as it is nestled in a romatic courtyard of an old monastery. -fresh homemade bread Cons -snobby french attitude -7 euros for a small glass bottle of Orangina !! thats $10 USD! - tiny portions and prices -Although food was top notch on style and creativity I was not blown away by flavor. verdict: I wouldn't spend my own money here or make an effort to go here again.

Yelp
The highlight of this restaurant is the ambience. Tucked away in the corner of the adorable town of Villeneuve lès Avignon, eating at this michelin-rated restaurant was like eating in The Secret Garden. The surrounding garden and hotel were absolutely charming and set the tone for a serene and relaxed dining experience. The food was quite good, though pretty traditional (nothing too innovative here) and quite expensive. A couple of details to note: we were there during a heatwave in July, and the summer temperatures were a bit uncomfortable. They did kindly provide bug spray when we asked since the kids were getting bitten. Also, they are very accommodating for kids. One negative: my mother-in-law is a vegetarian, and when I had emailed prior to make the reservation, I was told that they would be able to adapt the menu for her without problem. However, upon arriving and ordering, the server made it rather difficult to find any options for her, making me comb through the menu with him item by item to see exactly which dishes could be made vegetarian, and being rather pessimistic and annoyed that an accommodation had to be made for her.

Yelp
This is a quaint rustic hotel that's a hidden gem. Is exactly what I think of when I hear southern France. The restaurant has their own in-house sparkling water. Great food, quaint setting, very pretty outside! The hotel is a bit old, has old world charm but not exactly the amenities of a 5 star. Our room had a balcony and room was huge. If you're looking to get away from tourists and enjoy a small town with little more than town square charm, this is the place. Everywhere we turned, I wanted a picture.

Yelp
I think this is my first five star rating of a hotel. On our 2 week excursion we stayed in Paris, Dijon, Avignon and Cannes. The only regret we had was cutting Cannes short one night and staying at the Le Prieure an extra night. We ate at the restaurant one night, I will try to submit a seperate review on that later, however, that too I would give 5 stars. What is most memorable for me about Le Prieure was the comfort of the room. We stayed in what I believe was one of the original buildings. Up the stair case to the left of the reception area. Bed was the firmness that I prefer and what I enjoyed most was the ability to open the windows at night which for me, made great sleeping. Temps were in the low 60's at night. The days were warm and we ended them poolside. Not sure when we can return again, however, when in France, I will go out of my way to make it back.

Yelp
I was staying at the Le Prieure hotel and decided to dine at the hotel for one of the nights in Avignon. It's not often that I have a Michelin one star restaurant in my backyard so when it does happen I take that opportunity. Dinner was on the terrace facing the gardens and it was a perfect backdrop to a French dinner. There was a prix fixe menu of 68 or 84 euros per person. So around 93 and 115 US. Not obscenely horrible right? We chose the 68 euro prix fixe menu. You have a choice of two dishes per starter, entrée, and dessert. It was just the two of us so I picked one half of the menu and he picked the other half. That way we were able to try the entire menu on the 68 euro side. Everything tasted fabulous. Great taste as well as presentation. I don't remember much but I do remember having langoustine and monk fish that was exceptional. Both were light and delicate. Everything was amazing but I have to comment on dessert. The dessert was too sweet for me and would rather have another entrée. I loved the cheese plate. In the states you pay for your cheese plate and get to pick 3 or 5 or however many depending on how much you pay. In France you get to pick however much you want. Loving it. Service was good but a little bit frazzled in my opinion. Overall a very great dinner and evening.
