The Best Restaurants and Food-Focused Hotels in the Alps - Eater

"The refresh comes ironically from the Maisons et Hôtels Sibuet group, a hotelier family known for glitzy five-star properties. Their headliner in the Flaine reboot is the Hotel Totem, which the group calls “une nouvelle vision de l’hôtellerie” but basically amounts to a budget hotel housed in one of Breuer’s masterpieces." - Michelle Tchea

These Retro French Ski Towns Are Trendy Once Again

"The Sibuets revitalized Flaine's concrete in 2016 with the Terminal Neige Totem, a design-driven hostel-hotel. A crisp modernity and sense of fun defines the communal areas, with arcade games, neon signage, and big sofas by the Breuer-brutalist fireplace. Street-art-style murals and rooms with pops of retro design spell a notable lack of fuss—but that's the point. Doubles from $220"

Terminal Neige Totem (Flaine, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes) 1 Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"In years past, you might not have given the old Totem hotel a second look: a shame, especially considering its spectacular ski-in, ski-out location on the side of Flaine Forum, with easy access to one of the longest ski runs in the Alps. But that was before the hip, youth-oriented brand Terminal Neige snapped up the1960s-era Totem, and turned it into the flagship of their new line of hotels." - Tablet Hotels

This is a great ski in, ski out hotel. We stayed for three nights over a weekend. The buffet each evening was varied and the theme changed each evening. The food quality was good. Likewise breakfast in the morning had a huge range of food. The bar area (which is adjacent to the dining area) is a nice space to have a drink and relax in the evening. There was a nice warm fire on when we were there.||We opted for the slightly larger room, which I would recommend. The bed was very comfortable.||There is an in-house ski shop, which is very handy.||In terms of improvements, the boot room could be heated and use of the spa could be included in the price.

Stayed here for my first visit to flaine. Absolutely lovely hotel with great facilities! The twin rooms are small but do the job!! The design is super unique and decor is luxurious. The food at breakfast was always great and the staff are absolutely lovely, super hardworking too! The drinks are expensive but the france for you😂 ||The best bit for me was the location to the slope. Absolutely top tier!! Got all are rented ski gear super easy and it was fab to have the slope on our doorstep! I didnt get many pictures of the outside of the hotel - the majority of my pictures are from the main dinner room and view from the windows. There’s so many restaurants and bars surrounding it too!!

The hotel had very friendly with helpful staff, completely faultless. The ski hire shop in the hotel was also great, incredibly helpful manager and the kit was of a high standard. ||The rooms were small, a little bit tired - having paid for a balcony it would have been nice to have chairs on the balcony to sit on. ||The breakfasts were plentiful, high quality and a huge selection. The dinners were very disappointing - we don't tend to eat 3 -4 courses but the only option was the 'set buffet menu' which was £45 per person, which made dinner for our family of 4 very pricey (especially when the teenagers just wanted a bowl of pasta). There was hardly any meat options, lots of fish (in fact the whole hotel smelt of fish every evening). We were thankful we hadn't committed to the half board options so ended up sampling a lot of lovely restaurants in the resort. ||The spa was nice, I've never been to a hotel where you had top pay extra to use the sauna and jacuzzi though - so paying 10 euros per person, per day soon added up. Outdoor hot tub was also lukewarm every night. ||It was fine for a 3 star hotel.

Great hotel. My room with balcony was great. Layout of hotel fantastic in terms of easy access from rooms to ski equipment room and then out onto the snow. Really convenient and easy. Buffet breakfast very tasty with wide variety of options. Staff were really efficient and friendly and the bar is great too.

An excellent hotel located right at the start of the ski tracks perfect for kicking off the day and heading straight to the slopes. From the moment we arrived we felt genuinely welcomed, especially thanks to Ester at reception. Her kindness and vibe set the tone for the outstanding service we received throughout our four-night stay. The cozy living room next to the restaurant became our favorite gathering spot with friends, adding to the warm and inviting atmosphere. The service was truly five star, with Cristhian going above and beyond to make our experience exceptional. The only minor downside was that the rooms were a bit warm for my preference, but simply opening the window at night resolved this. Overall a fantastic stay, I highly recommend it!

Loved this chic, welcoming hotel. Effortlessly cool with an inclusive, friendly vibe. The staff, reception, bar, housekeeping were so helpful. Excellent kit and service from the in- house ski shop. Conveniently placed for the main gondola in the morning and the main square in the evening. Civilized breakfast times suit early risers and those needing a lie-in. We had a club room. Plenty of space for 2 and a bath as well as a shower. Has a gym and a spa. Decor is fab with lots to learn about the Bauhaus heritage. Families, couples and groups of friends seem to rub along happily assisted at all times by the smiling accommodating staff. There are retro video games and board games if you need to while away an hour or two in the bar / lounge. Breakfast was ample and delicious. We didn’t eat dinner but had tapas a couple of times. Vegetarians so choice all over the resort is limited, though definitely getting better. If I had one tiny fault it would be the damp boot room. Boots don’t dry overnight. A fabulous stay though. Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend and will certainly return.

This is a great hotel located right at the base of the Gran Plattier which is the main lift to the top of the mountain. The hotel manager, Mary Christine is completely charming and takes her role as GM very seriously. Every single member of staff was courteous, helpful, professional, and very ready to please and accommodate any needs that we had. The food changed each day and was delicious and plentiful. Our only observation would be that the double rooms could really use some extra hooks to hang coats and ski apparel, but really if that is the only thing that I worried about, there really is not very much to be concerned here. This might be rated as a three star hotel, but it acts as way higher. Consider yourself very lucky if you manage to book rooms here.

The staff at the Totem Hotel are indeed very friendly, their customer service was exemplary and we were all made to feel very welcome by everyone working there. They could not have been more helpful and lovely, thank you. The hotel was so nice too, very clean and trendy with a great vibe whatever your age. Ideal for skiing straight on to the slopes.

Yelp
Great breakfast buffet with plenty of healthy options. Dinner mediocre at best. Tortilllas without avocado or hot sauce, that kind of thing. Decent salad bar and desserts though. The hotel has some nice rooms, but we stayed in a 5 person suite 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms were fine, nice beds. One of our rooms is facing the forum- and the noise from the skating rink makes an afternoon nap or sleeping before 22.30 impossible. The pub next to the skating rink has music some nights- and that doesn't help either. Then the heat in the hotel- it is just way to warm in the hotel. And very hard to turn down the heat in the rooms. The breakfast area is also way warm- just not comfortable. The ski shop is great- good collection and nice an knowledgeable personnel. The bar area is also very nice- dj with music some Apes ski's and happy hour on Thursday. The music does go on during dinner time. The spa is not very good. The "hot tub" is outside,, great location but should be called "Tepid Tub". It's not warm enough. Also- the spa gets really crowded, so the sauna and tub are overcrowded and on occasion have no more space. Reception and personnel are nice and welcoming.
