Hotel Los Castanos, Near Ronda, Spain - Explore & Book

"You’re in the mountains. Chestnut forest surrounds you. The postman takes October off to join the harvest, and when it’s over the village celebrates: roasted chestnuts, a suckling pig, a band in the square and all-night dancing. Cartajima, population 100, is that rarest of Andalucian finds: an untouched white village, with barely any visitors, and views to die for. Everyone lives off the land: besides chestnuts, there are olives, cherries, almonds, mushrooms and mosto wines. Narrow stepped lanes snake to the church, whose tolling bell is the only sound on a summer afternoon. Tucked right next to it, the hotel - an amalgam of three village houses - is small, simple and comfortable; surprisingly so, perhaps, for such a tiny hamlet. There are 6 whitewashed bedrooms, a generous sitting room with fireplace and honesty bar, and home-cooked dinners if you ask. The crowning glory is a sun-soaked roof terrace with inspirational views over the wooded Genal valley to the lunar summits of the Sierra de las Nieves. It was this panorama that clinched it for owners Frank and Antje, who escaped the Berlin and Brussels rat races to start a new life here with their young kids. They're part of the village now, running the hotel - it's really more of an overgrown B&B - with a very relaxed informality. Hike out of the village on track through chestnut forests to the river, or jump in the car and head to glittering Ronda; it’s a 25-minute drive. If you want utter peace on the side of an Andalucian mountain, you've just found it. Highs The location - an idyllic village in a pristine setting, in easy striking distance of RondaFabulous hiking and outdoor activities - you can book customised packages from 3-7 days with guides and route mapsThe roof terrace is a great spot to sit and do very little - plough through a novel, perhaps, or write oneEach bedroom has a small balcony, so you can drink in the views of village or valleyOur home-cooked dinner, courtesy of Frank in chef mode, was excellent Lows Service is more B&B than hotel-style - no reception staff or waitresses, for exampleYou're up in the mountains and will need a car to explore; some might find the roads here a little hair-raisingDon't expect a menu: dinner is whatever Frank feels like cooking (though special diets can be catered)No pool at the hotel, but there's a village pool up the road (July-Aug only)Cartajima is a seriously sleepy place: apart from fiestas (and a little Saturday merriment in the village bar), it's dead quiet" - Michael Cullen

An outstanding place to stay, up in the mountains. Spent a week at Los Castanos where Frank is a superb host and chef. Friendly atmosphere throughout our stay, couples and families, various ages and nationalities. The breakfasts prepared with care and top quality products kept us going all day, returning to enjoy varied and very tasty evening dinners, all prepared by Frank. Tip: let him know in advance if you’ll be wanting dinner so he can shop and cook accordingly.||Rooms are light, airy and well looked after, ours was sunny with views over the village roofs and the mountains. Beds and armchairs very comfortable, bathrooms simple with everything you need. ||Cartajima is a lovely village worth exploring – look out for the clever murals everywhere and walk out to the springs (signed) to understand how people had to get their water in past times. We visited in April-May and walked every day: wildflowers superb and many, many different birds singing. A paradise for both. Frank and online walking apps will help you find the ways to go. Autumn is another good time to visit when the chestnuts trees are golden.

We had a very pleasant stay here with Frank & Angela who were delightful hosts. Room was comfortable, food was excellent. We ate in the hotel on two nights and both meals were delicious. Frank was very knowledgeable on what to do in the area and the hotel was a good base for day trips out and about. You do need a car however, unless you like hiking!

I’d actually rate 4 and 1/2! This was a terrific location & option to get out of the hustle & bustle. Beautiful, homely & serene place, clean & you could park nearby. I only took half a point off because I had emailed requesting to have dinner at the hotel, but I think they may not have checked & whilst they did provide us a lovely meal, I don’t feel it was worth the $$$ (however my husband loved it). So just ensure you confirm dinner reservation. Breakfast was fabulous. I would definitely visit again!

We have just completed a weeks hiking in the hills surrounding this lovely hotel in Cartajima. Having stayed there before 13 years ago we were a little concerned about the recent change of ownership but we needn’t have worried. Frank is not only a great host but an excellent chef. He has maintained the open house tradition of LC. Dinner was always delicious ranging from Israeli inspired salad to Hungarian goulash all cooked superbly. All was prepared to accommodate the fact that I need to be gluten free. There was an eclectic mix of guests making for good conversation over dinner. Maria, a local villager, was always there to help with a warm welcoming smile. ||Rooms are comfortable but basic and the hotel offers a great base for hiking including the Caminito del Rey or visiting the local attractions at Ronda and other villages. The roof terrace offers a lovely location to relax after a days hiking. We would definitely recommend and return again if our walking legs permit.

This was our first stop on our 10 day drive around Western Andalucia and it was a good choice. Frank has taken over the helm and is doing a superb job after only 6 weeks as new owner/manager. We had a lovely welcome with gins on the rooftop terrace and admired the pretty village below.||The hotel is comfortable and authentic and there are sustainable measures which are very pleasing to see. ||The meal cooked by Frank was indeed worthy of Yotam Ottolenghi and accompanied by wine from the locality. We managed a couple of walks around the village but wished we had been able to stay longer to do some of the nearby longer walks to adjacent villages. The chestnut groves and wildflowers are a sight to behold.||This is a proper casa rural with a host who will help you get the most out of your stay in this area and to appreciate the joys of a most delightful part of Spain.

We spent three nights at this lovely small hotel in the pretty white village of Cartajima. Our room ( with balcony) was very clean , quiet and comfortable with moroccan style furnishings and a beautiful view over the mountains. The communal roof terrace has stunning view and is a great place to relax. Di and John were very welcoming hosts and we were lucky enough to have three delicious dinners cooked by Di. There are plenty of great walks in the area and we enjoyed exploring Ronda. We are looking forward to another stay.
