Amsterdam's Hotels Won't Waste Your Time

"Time was boutique hotels in Amsterdam were avant-garde affairs, parlaying the success of modern Dutch design into a hotel scene straight out of the future. Hotel Mercier, however, belongs to a later generation, one that integrates Amsterdam’s historical charms with eclectic contemporary decoration and the kind of personality-driven boutique hospitality." - Mark Fedeli

Our stay was nice - the location of the hotel was near a bunch of shopping, and about a 10-15 minute walk to the tram/bus/metro stations. Our room was clean, spacious, shower was GREAT!! The window did not open due to safety reasons.. Getting in and out of the hotel was the one I didn’t like, you would ring the doorbell to get let in (for safety) but a couple of times later in the evening it would take a couple of tries for you to get let in (whenever it was cold it felt longer though). Good stay overall!!!!

We stayed at Hotel Mercier for 3 nights and had a wonderful experience. We were absolutely blown away from the moment we walked in. The reception staff were so accommodating, holding our bags, allowing us to check in early and offered complimentary coffees while we waited. There is a stunning bar area and coffee machine setup, with a luxurious atmosphere and feel. Our deluxe room on level 4 was divine, it included stunning views of neighbouring rooftops through lovely large arched windows. The amenities were clean and comfortable and had everything we needed. We would also love to compliment the waitstaff, particularly, Lorenzo, who served a daily delicious buffet breakfast and had been very accommodating. We would love to come back here and stay. Highly recommend!!!

The hotel is very central and in a nice calm road. Very stylish and chic, I loved the interior design. The staff is also friendly and helpful. Very good breakfast and cocktails. We will come back! :)

Google
A beautiful hotel. We stayed from 23 to 24 December, we were given a suite and only payed 97€! The receptionist was super kind, the location was perfect, the decoration was so stylish and unique, and we loved the room. Good decoration, Nespresso machine, a Marshall speaker, super comfortable bed, good climate control, silent, and I could keep adding details. A new favourite in Amsterdam!

I stayed at Hotel Mercier in Amsterdam for four nights, and unfortunately, the experience fell far below expectations. From the moment we arrived, the service was unwelcoming. We got there before the official check-in time and politely asked if a room might be ready a bit early. Instead of a courteous response, we were curtly told, “Check-in is at 3,” with no effort to check or offer to hold our bags, we had to specifically ask them to be held. It set the tone for the rest of the stay. The room itself was tiny, dark, and had a noticeable smell. The lighting didn’t work properly, and despite raising the issue, no one made an effort to fix it. Even more concerning, the air conditioning unit was leaking, and there was a disturbing black water stain on the wall beneath it. Other questionable stains on the walls — which I can only hope were makeup — added to the discomfort. The carpet clearly hadn’t been cleaned properly, and both my husband and I woke up every morning with allergy symptoms, which is highly unusual for us. We also asked to borrow umbrellas on a rainy day and were handed one that was broken — a quick check of the others revealed they were all in a similar state of disrepair. It’s a small detail, but indicative of the overall lack of care or attention to guest experience. The biggest letdown, however, was the attitude of the staff throughout our stay. Rude, dismissive, and generally unhelpful — not what you’d expect or hope for during a visit to such a vibrant city. I completely understand the concept of getting what you pay for, but in this case, even considering the price point for that weekend, the experience was not worth it.

Google
Amazing location, but the room we were given was out the back in an exterior extension which has been added on. In rainy weather this involves walking along a wet corridor to get to your room somewhat exposed to the elements. The rooms there are odd white a glass front but on the ground floor surprisingly dark and there as rippled glass screen partition in the room to stop people staring into the bedroom area. All a bit drab and not up to standards I would have expected given the price.

We recently stayed at Hotel Mercier in Amsterdam and had a mixed experience. The location is fantastic, and we were warmly welcomed at check-in, which set a great tone. Unfortunately, things went downhill when we encountered an issue with our room. We had booked an internal room (no exterior windows) through a third-party travel portal, and found that the air conditioning didn’t work. Even with a fan provided by staff, the room remained over 25°C. The hallways were noticeably cooler, making the room feel even more uncomfortable, especially for sleep. We saw that another room was available to book online and asked to be moved, but were told by the front desk that they couldn’t help because we booked through a third party. We spent hours ping-ponging between the hotel and the booking company, trying to sort it out. Eventually, while at dinner, the booking company confirmed a room change, only for us to return and be told that the new room had been booked by someone else online in the meantime. It was our last night, and we had an early international flight, so it was a frustrating end to an otherwise lovely trip. Most reviews mention how beautiful the rooms are, but it’s worth noting those are the external rooms, so be mindful of the distinction when booking and consider calling ahead to confirm room type. Internal rooms are small, motel-like set up - and in our experience very stuffy. We usually seek out and support local, boutique hotels, but sadly in this case, it felt like we were penalized for not booking direct. Hopefully service is more consistent for those who do.

Yelp
Great location, it's a safe area and you can walk to everything from here. Fantastic staff that always has the best attitude. I loved the breakfast here. The room was perfectly clean and well size and comfortable for the two of us. I would stay here again.

Yelp
Very nice hotel on a quiet side street near canal. Staff was friendly at front desk. Our separate shower room had a very funky smell, we had to keep the door open. I think it was coming from the vent inside the shower stall. The separate toilet room did not smell foul. We were very surprised our room was never cleaned even though we left card off door. I had to ask for fresh towels and toilet paper. This hotel had the worst toilet paper we encountered in Europe (12days) It was like sandpaper. The breakfast room was very nice (7-11) a good breakfast. Surprised there were no condiments provided.

Yelp
Hotel Mercier: The epitome of Dishonesty Traveling extensively across Europe, we have stayed in accommodations of all kinds, from five-star luxury hotels to budget-friendly stays. Rarely have we encountered a hotel as blatantly dishonest as Hotel Mercier. First, the false advertising. We paid extra for a deluxe room, expecting a higher level of comfort. Instead, we were placed in a motel-style room outside the main hotel, with no privacy, as anyone passing by could see directly inside. This was not remotely the deluxe experience we were led to believe we were booking. When I raised this issue with the staff, I was told the hotel was fully booked and that we could not be moved until the next day, an important fact that should have been disclosed before check-in. Then, the deception went even further. Unfortunately, that night, my husband became seriously ill, and we had to cut our trip short and fly home to New York a day early. At checkout, I spoke with Lazlo at the front desk, who clearly assured me that we would not be charged for the unused night as long as Hotels.com waived their cancellation fee. Wanting to confirm, I immediately contacted Hotels.com, and they agreed to process the refund, provided the hotel honored their commitment. But after we checked out, Hotel Mercier flatly denied this agreement, both to us and to Hotels.com. Hotels.com has confirmed multiple times that they were fully willing to issue the refund if the hotel simply honored their word. Instead of taking responsibility for their employee's promise, the hotel lied, repeatedly claiming that Hotels.com would not process the refund when in reality, it was the hotel itself blocking it. When confronted, the hotel dismissed the situation entirely, claiming Lazlo had made a mistake, as if that somehow absolves them of accountability. This is not just poor service. This is a hotel that routinely deceives its guests. They mislead people into booking rooms that do not match their advertised descriptions, and when their employees make a commitment to a guest, they refuse to honor it. A reputable hotel stands by its word. A dishonest one shifts blame, lies, and hopes you will just give up. Between the false advertising of their rooms and the deliberate dishonesty regarding our refund, Hotel Mercier has made one thing clear: they cannot be trusted. There are plenty of wonderful hotels in Amsterdam that operate with transparency and integrity. This is most obviously not one of them.

Yelp
First time in Amsterdam, chose this hotel because of the close proximity to the city center. Close to the canal with regular boat tours, Annie Frank House and lots of eateries, shops neighborhood happenings. The hotel is in great shape with nicely equipped rooms. Large bar in the lobby that is open late. Very busy vegan restaurant attached to the hotel with 5 course menu. Great place to stay while in Amsterdam!

Yelp
Amsterdam was the first city I went to my first time in Europe. I did not know what to expect, and when I arrived at this hotel, the hotel workers were patient enough to explain things about the city, offered me water, and held onto my luggage while I toured because I arrived before the room was ready. The view from the room I had was peaceful, it was right next to a garden, and the room was soundproof, and the curtains were blackout curtains which was an excellent detail because of the time difference from traveling overseas. This hotel offers breakfast. It was the best-included hotel breakfast I have ever had. The chef was there to make whatever breakfast food you wanted, and everything from the fruit to the bread tasted fresh. This hotel has a bar area that is beautiful as well. Also, the location of this hotel is excellent. It is close to a metro station and a lot of shops. It is walking distance from many touristic places like the plaza.

Yelp
This retro modern hotel is perfectly located near Westermarkt and the Anne Frank House. You can walk almost anywhere in the city or conveniently take the nearby tram or metro. The room was nicely decorated with touches of gold, rugs on the walls and a Marshall's speaker, which is such a cute touch! The beds were comfortable with plushy comforters and the space we had, had a seating area for two with a quaint marble table. The lobby itself had a bar and a restaurant which I had the chance of tasting for breakfast and had scrumptious scrambled eggs, freshly baked croissants and fresh fruit. I do think it was a little pricey if it isn't included with the room, so that was something to consider. The service was excellent as they were helpful with any questions we had and greeted us every morning even when we were groggy and tired. Will recommend and stay here again!

Yelp
We had booked a room here, for our honeymoon, and were really looking forward to our stay. The day before we were scheduled to fly out was the day the US implemented the travel restrictions, followed a few days later by similar circumstances in the Netherlands and France (where we would have travelled from to Amsterdam). Since then, we've been able to reschedule our plane tickets, our hotel in Paris, and even the train tickets from Paris to Amsterdam. But Hotel Mercier has continued to be the one holdout, refusing us the opportunity to reschedule our stay there. Because of this we may have to forgo our travels to Amsterdam altogether and that has been a huge disappointment. I will acknowledge the fact that our reservation was considered non-refundable (our Paris hotel reservation was as well, but they were accommodating given these circumstances) and we knew that. But facing a global pandemic we had hoped for a little wiggle room. Live and learn, I suppose. But the disappointment and frustration is real.
