Restaurant Meudon

"Imposing granite pillars and neatly laid tables help to bring an air of classical elegance to this restaurant inside the Hotel Meudon. The dining room overlooks impressive mature sub-tropical gardens, which also contribute to the all-round lovely setting. The concise, daily changing menu is Cornish at heart, especially when it comes to seafood. Dishes like Mylor crab filo tart are understated yet well-executed and wholly enjoyable." - Michelin Inspector

My wife and I stayed for one night on our way to the Isles of Scilly. It's always a bit worrying staying for one night as you think you are going to not be given full attention. However we could not have been more wrong as when we arrived we had been upgraded to a suite. The view from the hotel over the gardens is fantastic as is the walk down to the secluded beach. The evening meal was great as were the staff. We also had lunch in the garden on the day of arrival which was really nice, including the cream tea. The room was perfectly clean and spacious with a great balcony which had fantastic garden and sea views. The staff on reception were really helpful. Would we return?. Yes without a doubt. Our only suggestion would be to get slightly better ingredients for breakfast. Top tip, book directly with the hotel and get a balcony garden room.

We stayed as a one-night stopover as we’d had afternoon tea here a few years ago when we rented a cottage nearby.||We arrived quite late, after dark, as we’d travelled to Penzance on the Scillonian. My wife dropped me at reception as I had an injured knee, and went off to park. She had to park in the furthest overflow car park, which is rough and unlit; she had a bit of a struggle to get back to the man part of the hotel grounds by the light of her iPhone torch about 10 minutes later. Not good.||Dinner was fine, and I was pleased that the steak pepper sauce contained green peppercorns rather than just ground black pepper.||The room was fine, in a rather 1950s style (not my style, but nothing to possibly object to).||The cooked breakfast was strange. I asked for mushrooms and scrambled egg. The mushrooms were hardly warm and had been dry-grilled. Tasteless. The scrambled egg was unlike any I had seen in my 70+ years. It seemed to have been chopped into minute rectangular pieces and mixed with something glutenous, and had an unpleasant texture. I asked for both to be replaced – the new mushrooms were hot but even more shrivelled, and the egg was identical. I left both – something I have never done before in any hotel.||So, a slightly ‘curate’s egg’ stay.||PS – Management, please don’t reply. Please.

this was our fifth visit in 3 years . however also our last . on all previous visits this dog loving hotel arranged for dog owners to eat with their dogs in a large room off the bar , set up with proper dining tables and chairs . on this visit we were advised that , on the orders of an unnamed 'director' we must now take our breakfast and dinner in a draughty hallway [ called the bridge ] on soft chairs and knee high tables , totally inappropriate for a serious dinner , let alone a morning fry up . no amount of complaining persuaded the unhelpful manageress to fail to obey her instructions , no matter how rediculous they were .eventually , at my suggestion . we were allowed to move to an unused boardroom that at least had suitable tables and chairs but were severely told it would not be available the next day . [ this did us a favour as we went to a nearby highly reccommended pub/restaurant - the ferry boat inn and had a better and better value meal ] |i wonder if this change in attitude has any connection with the hotel recently gaining permission to build 10 multi million £ houses in their garden ?????|we did notice that the room we previously had used was always empty |other dog owners we met there were also of the same opinion

This is a beautiful hotel with lovely gardens and a private beach.|The staff were so friendly and they eager to please.|We had breakfasts both mornings and there was a great selection of buffet breakfast plus your own menu choice. Both breakfasts were delicious and good choice for vegetarians.|The room (suite) was spotless and everything catered for. The views from our balcony were stunning.|I can highly recommend this hotel both for the friendliness and efficient staff and for the location and facilities.

I enjoyed my 3 night stay, booked to include my dog. The room was comfortable, the food well cooked but a fairly restricted menu - 5 starters & 6 mains. BUT & this is a big but - if one wants to dine with your dog , you are now put into a corridor, instead of the drawing room or bar, & with only very low coffee tables at which to sit, no proper tables although a small one was eventually bought in for me, it also took over 40 minutes for a waiter to take my order, definitely a case ‘out of sight - out of mind’. In all I think it was the most miserable dining experience I have ever had. Apparently the order for the removal of dogs to this miserable corridor called The Bridge, had come down from ‘higher authority’. If guests are to enjoy ding here proper tables should be provided & the ambiance improved.

We have stayed at the Meudon several times over quite a few years and enjoyed it very much. But things have changed. The principal focus seems to be money. They want to sell you multi-million pound houses built presumably in the grounds, not deliver a country house hotel experience. Bean counters have taken over. I mean that literally. On our past and final visit my wife had a cooked breakfast. It contained baked beans. 12 of them. And half a small mushroom. There was also one fried egg and a single rasher of bacon (she requested no sausage). There was very little choice. Dishes such as kippers or smoked haddock were absent. I have never had such a poor breakfast in a hotel. This was not a country house experience. |On our first evening we went to the bar. There was another guest waiting to be served. We joined him. Nobody came despite ringing the bell on the bar. For 25 minutes.|It is a pity because, in the restaurant, the dinner was good. The staff were competent and friendly, but there were not enough of them.|Our room was clean, but the mattress was worn out. Both sides had very deep indentations and it was very uncomfortable. |They have recently changed, with as I understand it little or no notice, their rules on dogs. We did not have ours with us, but had we enjoyed the stay we would probably have booked to return and bring ours with us. But now the only place one can have a meal with a dog is on low coffee tables in a sort of corridor which joins two buildings together. This was totally empty for our entire visit and I can imagine how long it would take to be served there. No ambience at all. |It seems that management has recently changed and it shows. We did not have a country house hotel experience and will write the Meudon off as somewhere that we once enjoyed but no longer.|I do not like writing poor reviews of hotels because, obviously, things are tough for them at present. But we were disappointed. I contacted them by email and attempted to raise our concerns directly but did not receive the courtesy of a reply. Hence this poor review. We will not return.

The location makes this place. Stunning grounds and subtropical gardens leading out on to the private beach. Doggy friendly and the breakfast was actually pretty decent (in comparison to a lot of the other reviews on here.) Yes, service wasn't 5* but the people working there seemed lovely and ultimately - you get what you pay for. We will plan to come back next year - really enjoyed our short stay.

We had a wonderful stay at Hotel Meudon Cornwall. The family room was very comfortable, and the hotel’s décor is lovely. One of the highlights was definitely the stunning gardens — the subtropical garden is truly incredible. The location is excellent, with many beautiful Cornwall attractions easily accessible. The restaurant was excellent, with delicious food and themed evenings like BBQ in the garden, which was a real highlight. The atmosphere is very calm and peaceful, perfect for a relaxing getaway. Very peaceful atmosphere — perhaps a bit more serene than our lively little ones were used to! Overall, a fantastic spot for anyone looking to enjoy the beauty of Cornwall.
