8 Incredible Trips Across Canada Run by Indigenous Tour Operators

"A recent $10 million renovation of the Hôtel-Musée Premières Nations added 24 new rooms, as well as a remodeled restaurant and a cellar stocked with wines from Indigenous producers. The hotel, which is in the Huron-Wendat Nation territory of Wendake, an enclave of Quebec City, shares its site along the Akiawenrahk River (also known as the St. Charles) with the Musée Huron-Wendat, which has both permanent and rotating exhibitions and is also home to the Ekionkiestha’ National Longhouse, a wooden replica of a pre-Columbian dwelling. Guests can visit for an evening of traditional stories and song and, if they like, spend the night." - Diane Selkirk

La Traite, the in-house fine-dining restaurant, serves high-end Indigenous-inspired cuisine such as seal tataki poached with milk and smoked thyme and duck breast with blueberry and honey sauce, and Sunday brunch is presented to the rhythm of a drum. Canada's Growing Supply of Stylish Hotels

"There’s nothing else quite like the Hôtel-Musée Premières-Nations. Here the lodging is attached to a museum dedicated to Canada’s First Nations history and culture, which comes complete with an authentic Iroquois longhouse. It’s set on the Wendake reservation, close to Québec City but far enough to feel like a proper escape — a sensation that’s only heightened by the comfort of the resort-style rooms." - Mark Fedeli

WOW! After spending two nights in Old Quebec, this was a pleasant change of scenery staying at this STUNNING property. Our room was spacious with beautiful furnishings. The bed and pillows were comfortable. Falling asleep at night with the patio door open and the sounds of the river outside gave me one of the best nights of sleep! The hotel property is laid out well with all rooms having a view! Will definitely stay here again!

Our stay was five stars from start to finish. The ambiance was luxurious and the service impeccable and non-intrusive. For a hotel of a modest size, it provides guests numerous areas for unwinding, whether it is by the bar, a large window, a fire, the outdoor terrace or the river. The breakfast menu is small but carefully curated to serve different dietary needs while showcasing native flavours. We dined outdoors to the sounds of the rushing Akiawenrahk river before taking a walk through the trail. The museum and longhouse tour was about one and a half hours long with both French and English time slots. I recommend making time for it as it provides important cultural and historical context with many opportunities for asking questions. Our guide was lovely and patient but it was hard at times to hear him clearly. The exhibits in the museum were well executed which allowed us to follow along. The time we spent in the longhouse was incredibly memorable, making this a hotel stay unlike any other.

Google
Super beautiful hotel. Very comfortable beds and pillows. Service is excellent. The grounds are gorgeous. It's right beside a river and you can hear it from your room....so relaxing. The sitting area at the bar, on the main floor, is a sweet spot to hang out...especially with a fancy coffee. They make the Irish and Spanish coffee like they used to in the 80s, with flames!! Very cool to watch! Andrée-Anne made us delicious coffees.

Everything was excellent, except the museum hours, even during the summer months, are short. It was closed by the time we arrived for check-in and we had to leave the next morning. Would have loved to learn a bit about first nations people, history, and culture. The staff fronting the museum was eager to call it a day.

Got an ad for the hotel on FB and glad I did. Staff was VG our room was on bottom floor with nice patio with glimpses and sounds of the river. Hotel does a nice job of celebrating First Nations people. Room was very nice and all for a fair price. You need to come here.

It was very different then staying at usual hotels we stay in. The learning opportunities were very appreciated. Activities and workshops are well priced and organized. Want to give a shout out to our story teller Samuel that made our first activity a memorable one The lady doing the necklace workshop will surprise you with all her abilities. The showers were very ergonomic. The bed and beddings were very comfortable. The aspects I wished were part of the experience:Bigger pool as we went there as a family and the pool was rather small. Wooden floor are nice and stone floors in bathroom look nice as well but both are really cold to walk on. Although they offer bathrobes they unfortunately dont offer slippers. More hiking trails nearby as well, although the little trail they have around the hotel with panels giving information on different aspect of the Wendat traditions was a nice evening walk to do as a couple. Overall a very nice stay. Would recommend it without hesitation.

Google
Great hotel with small but nice amenities. Delicious local fare at the attached restaurant, and also has a museum and historic longhouse you can visit. My one gripe is that I had specifically booked adjoining rooms and was assured this was no problem, but subsequent renovations removed adjoining rooms, and no one thought to advise me. We would have picked a less expensive room if we'd known.

Beautiful land and hotel. Stayed and held a small conference here last month. The trails along the river are wonderful and a good way to "get away" from a meeting. Fantastic food and affable staff. Great place!

Yelp
Visited Hotel-Musee Premieres Nations for my birthday in August. I knew I wanted to visit Quebec City and I researched hotels for months and when I came across this hotel, I knew I had to book a stay! The hotel is pet friendly...which is a major plus and was located just outside the city core. I preferred that because I wanted green space for my dog but also I was to be surrounded by nature and calm rather than the bustling city. Another major draw was the hotel itself. "Designed to resemble a traditional Iroquois longhouse, Hôtel-Musée Premières Nations elegantly blends cultural traditions with many of today's modern amenities. Enjoy spacious guest rooms overlooking the scenic Akiawenrahk (Saint Charles) River". Now wouldn't that alone draw you in? Attached to the hotel is the Huron-Wendat museum. The hotel gounds are breathtaking with trails out back and a forested are that opens up to the Saint Charles River. I loved walked my dog out here, sitting close to the river and just relaxing, listening to the river. Such a serene place. Our room was on the first floor which I loved because we had an outdoor patio are that backed right out on the trail and you could here the river flowing beyond the trees. It was everything I wanted in a hotel to spend my birthday. Overall, my dog and I had a wonderful stay, the staff were friendly. The rooms were conformable, the hotel grounds and the town of Wendat is a great alternative if you want something less touristy. Even though I'm writing this review months later, I still think of this place and the serene feeling I felt while I was there. It is a special place and whenever I feel stressed, I close my eyes and think about being there walking the trail out back and hearing the river flow by.

Yelp
We arrive late at night and the neighborhood didn't look too promising, but once inside the hotel everything was very different, it's clean and spacious with an native Indian decor, very interesting Hosted was friendly, our rooms didn't have working air conditioning and it was a bit stuffy, the front desk came 3 times to try to fix it and was unable, they call the repair guy who came in 20 minutes, he was extremely attentive and apologetic, he was not able to fix it but we got a new room Over all it was a nice stay at the museum

Yelp

Yelp
Quebec City has a very interesting History. We all learned about it in school (in Canada) back in the day about General Wolfe and General Montcalm and the battle on the Plains of Abraham. The British won back then and that's why we have a constitutional monarchy to this day. However the Queen rarely (if never) comes to Quebec City or the soverigntists would pelt her car with eggs and more likely cause a riot! If you want a wonderful explanation of some more of the Quebec history visit the Quebec Parliament with a guided tour. Little did I know however was that there are natives of First Nation descent still to this day living just north of Quebec City. A work friend told me to book this hotel one evening before we had business meetings. I was intrigued. Where is this Wendake I thought to myself (pronounced Wen-da-kay)? Very cool that it's a First Nations hotel. For me growing up in Manitoba I had friends and experienced many FN people of Ojibway and Cree descent. So this Huron Wendat history intrigued me. I arrived at the hotel a bit before 5 pm and found out that there was a museum you could visit for free as a hotel guest. So I took my rolling suitcase and entered the museum explaining I wanted a quick look. My jaw dropped it was amazing and had an incredible artifacts collection preserved behind glass in an amazing display in a dark room. I must come back when more time presents itself. They have oral guides in both francais et English. As you enter the hotel the decor is pretty amazing. Lots of First Nations art and jewellery plus animal decor really making you feel like you are in their tradition. The lobby area has beautiful huge windows of the back area with a glass fireplace and comfy chairs. It has an aura of sacred rituals, tranquility but yet incredible clean modern design. I must declare this one of the coolest boutique hotels I've visited in quite some time as I'd declare it a true hidden gem. All the rooms face the backside. The front desk mentioned they have 57 rooms. There is a river and feeling like you are in nature out in the forest. The room is a very urban subtle clean new design with animal pelts and native decor. On the wall was a fox pelt. I though there was an animal sleeping on my bed but it was a beaver pelt. The room was extremely comfortable clean and modern. We decided to skip the restaurant that evening as by looking at the menu it seemed to be exquisite food however we didn't feel like spending $55-$70 per person. If you are into exploring a different hotel experience this is your place! Truly it's a gem and not your regular Hilton-Sheraton-Marriott or Holiday Inn. It's run in partnership with the local people and the Hotel Champetre chain in QC. I'm a true believer there should be partnerships like this in all provinces of a Canada especially Ontario, Manitoba and BC with the local First Nations people and hotel chains. I have lots of respect for First Nations peoples culture and my stay was very enjoyable but short. Thanks!

Yelp
We arrived in the parking and saw a weird looking design for a Hotel. There's no window in the front plus there's a kind of tippi shaped part of it that looks quite unique. As soon as we got in, we got mezmerized by the design, and I mean, I don't really care about that but then, this place has a restaurant with some Tree. Really clean in few words a scandinavian-first-nation-design, Clean woody feeling to it. 4 star hotel with great friendly local staff. (Check out the website). I unfortunatly arrived late for the museum and too soon for dinner. The lunch starts little before noon and is done by 2:30 PM. Then the Dinner service starts at 5:30 PM. So the menu was quite small for the bistro side of the menu. They serve first nation cuisine which is not to be completly uncommon for Quebec Cuisine since we influenced each other. It has a lot of Savory dish with game and big game and fowl and sweet jelly and sauce to balance the stronger tastes of game meal. High end and high quality food. An absolute must in my opinion. I know I'm going back and will further details the meals on my second visit. The first visit I was able to check out of my bucket list Strugeon. Smoked sturgeon and salmon ans deer. It was just Amazing. the smoking technique they use is a old school traditional technique first nation use there to smoke meat. Nice local chease with a corn beer that really reminded me of a IPA . A bit pricy but overall all and totally worth it. I'd like to stay there a week-end next year it looks nice, close to the city and is a DEFINITIVE destination for couples who's looking for a relaxed but high end service without being in the usual classic 4 stars hotel. IT's definitly an experience that mixes charm, and beauty in a very cozy and green space.

Yelp
Such an amazing experience! I guess it's time to give up my yelp review virginity but I am so glad that I am giving it to such a great hotel. Hôtel-Musée Premières Nations is located around 25 minutes away from Old Quebec, which makes it a great stop if you have arranged a couple of days to stay in Quebec. You'll learn so much history about the Wendake people and culture. We didn't get a chance to participate in the activities that were offered in the area but I'm sure they are will elevate the experience even more. The rooms were very clean and had Native American themed decors. Overall a wonderful place for people of all ages.

Yelp
There is this feeling I get whenever I go to a restaurant from which I expect a lot (La Traite is after all a 3 star restaurant and the prices remind you it is) and am disappointed. The chef surely knows how to use the very local ingredients to the best of their possibilities, he also knows how to put savors, textures and colors together so as to present a beautiful plate to you. So why, oh why, do you (chef or whoever is actually in the kitchen) feel the need to prepare everything in advance and re-heat it at dinner time? Do you really think we won't notice the difference with freshly made food? I can totally understand reheated soup - it takes hours of simmering to make a good one - but re-heated fish? re-heated vegetables? Is that really necessary? And most appealing of all... A zabaione which arrived literally 2 minutes after I ordered it, when anyone with a slight interest in sugar knows it takes at least 15 minutes of hard whipping to perfect it! As for everything, chef, if you can't be bothered making it when ordered, do not put it on your menu. To conclude, the menu is great but the realization of it is most definitely disappointing... Especially more so when you know you can count the restaurant cooking 'first nations' cuisine in Quebec on the fingers of just one of your hands...

Yelp
it's august, and the weather is great. there are lots of places to sit outside, and all you can really hear is the stream and the falls. there is a lot of nature here. quebec city is about ten miles away, but it takes about a half hour by waze. last nite we drove to the hotel frontenac, and i have to say i prefer here. the little tchatchke village is walking distance, there are supermarkets not far, and past them, a huge mall. the hotel is very pretty and the deco is nice, they have framed artisanat in the corridors. our room is big, and the toilet is separated from the bath. i'm kind of a difficult person so if you are difficult also, this place might be good enough for you. morning coffee was six dollars, so, a ripoff. we came here as tourists mainly for quebec city proper, but i think we're getting only the best of it by staying at wendake. i picked this place because i wanted a hotel like the overlook, and it is, kind of. bike rentals are 15/hr.; wood fires burning on every floor incite my sinuses.

Yelp
Full disclosure: I found out I was a Wendat five years ago after doing ancestry research so I was all smiles walking into this place. BUT, I'm also a San Francisco foodie so my standards are high. This place is classy, upscale, but somehow you feel fully integrated into mother nature with its decor and menu. Go with the four course "first nations" prix fixe. Try any app, surely get the "three sisters" soup, get any entrée, and finish off with the chocolate mousse (which I could have devoured three portions). This is a place you will never forget.... Seriously.
