On the Grid : Hotel Nacional

"You really shouldn’t come to Havana and not take a stroll around the veranda of the Hotel Nacional, and have a drink overlooking the Malecon. It's also worth staying here for a couple nights, if you want to do a hotel stay. Rooms are nothing special, but the grounds are beautiful, and the cost is reasonable during low season. Plus it's the only hotel that gives you a 24 wifi card, and they have the fastet connection in the city. The hotel is steeped in history—built by the mafia before the revolution, and then nationalized and renovated. Don’t miss the bar with the wall of fame with all the incredibly diverse figures who have visited the hotel, from Paris Hilton to Hugo Chavez. The mojitos are pricey ($6) but one of the best in the city." - Noah Friedman-Rudovsky

7 Classic Cocktails Invented in Hotels—And How to Make Them at Home

"Perhaps the most delicious hotel cocktail on this list, this twist on the daiquiri, which sometimes goes by the name Hotel Nacional instead, combines the sweetness of apricot brandy, rum, pineapple, and lime. The invention of the drink is credited to Wil P. Taylor, one of the barmen during the glamorous Havana hotel’s 1930s heyday (Frank Sinatra, Ava Gardner, and Marlon Brando were guests)."

Yes, You Can Still Visit Cuba Legally—and It's Safe

"The landmark Hotel Nacional, one of the properties specifically listed by the State Department as one to avoid, was largely business as usual, with foreign guests smoking cigars at the Galería Bar and sipping rum drinks on the lawn."

We found the hotel delightful! Of course it’s old, but that is part of its beauty and charm. Havana is a gritty hustle and this place provides a much needed oasis. Particularly (and unexpectedly) enjoyable was the cigar tasting. Yahnet is passionate about Cuban culture, extremely knowledgeable about cigars and a warm and hospitable hostess. Was (as a non smoker) an unusual highlight of our visit. Sincere thankyou Yahnet!!

Stayed here in May and it was wonderful. So much history with this hotel, it’s like staying in a museum.|The hotel is lovely and clean and the gardens are beautiful to sit and relax in.|On exploring the hotel we walked into the Churchill Bar which was tucked away, lovey little bar to sit and have a cocktail or two and the staff there were so lovely.|The food was good and the breakfast was plentiful.|We also did the Parisian show which was superb.|Will definitely go back again.

It was my first time traveling to Havana. Staying at this hotel was magical: checking was fast (they checked me in early), the staff was friendly and professional, the room is comfortable, air conditioned. History of this hotel is impressive. A lot of beautiful original decor. Breakfast is delicious - buffet style and a lot of verity. Special thanks to Yarelis relaciones publicas (public relations of the hotel). Very friendly and professional staff. Lots of live music. Great atmosphere.

Amazing place. Are the rooms old? Sure. So what. We booked it as a package from Canada at crazy bargain prices so maybe we’re less annoyed than those who paid a fortune to stay there. It’s a wonderful place. They key to really enjoying it is to never change money there, or use your credit card, or eat anything but the included breakfast and snacks by the pool. Change your cash on the street for literally 3 times their rate. 3 times! There are tons of great restaurants really near by (rule: never eat out at any govt run restaurant, no matter how fancy, only eat at the private ones) that not only accept your money to pay for dinner but will also exchange even more for pesos. Then you go to the National for great drinks and absolutely wonderful non stop music and pay in pesos. Suddenly your $8 drink is now $2.60! Get smart! We’d stay again in a heartbeat. Love this place.

This gem of a hotel is really worth a visit. We stayed there only one night but wished we had more time. The atmosphere is unique as you are taken back to the Havana of the 40's and 50's which no longer exist. Most of the furniture dates back to that period and there are plenty of photographs, memorabilia, including the menu choices made by famous people such as Winston Churchill, Frank Sinatra, the Mafia Mob of the 1946 Havana summit. On the down side, rooms are tired and the bathrooms need updating and a bit more TLC. Having said that, however, the beautiful grounds, the garden bar, the restaurant etc. surely make up for any shortcomings. |I highly recommend it for those people who want to breathe the Havana "golden" day atmosphere and are not too bothered if the shower doesn't work to perfection or if only 1 of the 4 lifts are working.

We had such a great experience during our stay in the National Hotel. Dunia! Dunia was the best, she helped with settling us and made sure we were accommodated and comfortable during our stay. Talkative, knowledgeable and extremely kind and patient; our trip wouldn't be the same without her. |Special thanks to Alfaro from the garden bar, he was kind and served us during late hours always with a smile in his face. And also Dayana from the breakfast buffet always attentive and kind to us. Great stay!

It is a historical hotel with excellent high end service. The only drawback is the location is a bit far away from the old town and touristy areas. The humidor is definitely well stocked and worthwhile walking into to check out the cigar selection especially the Cohibas. Its like walking into a jewellery store for cigars .

It sits on the edge of a cliff with a large courtyard in the back, it's beautiful. There's random peacocks just roaming around. It's a great place to come get drinks at the end of the day, you don't need to be staying there. Go grab a seat and the wait staff will come around to you eventually!
