"You really shouldn’t come to Havana and not take a stroll around the veranda of the Hotel Nacional, and have a drink overlooking the Malecon. It's also worth staying here for a couple nights, if you want to do a hotel stay. Rooms are nothing special, but the grounds are beautiful, and the cost is reasonable during low season. Plus it's the only hotel that gives you a 24 wifi card, and they have the fastet connection in the city. The hotel is steeped in history—built by the mafia before the revolution, and then nationalized and renovated. Don’t miss the bar with the wall of fame with all the incredibly diverse figures who have visited the hotel, from Paris Hilton to Hugo Chavez. The mojitos are pricey ($6) but one of the best in the city." - Noah Friedman-Rudovsky

"Perhaps the most delicious hotel cocktail on this list, this twist on the daiquiri, which sometimes goes by the name Hotel Nacional instead, combines the sweetness of apricot brandy, rum, pineapple, and lime. The invention of the drink is credited to Wil P. Taylor, one of the barmen during the glamorous Havana hotel’s 1930s heyday (Frank Sinatra, Ava Gardner, and Marlon Brando were guests)."

"The landmark Hotel Nacional, one of the properties specifically listed by the State Department as one to avoid, was largely business as usual, with foreign guests smoking cigars at the Galería Bar and sipping rum drinks on the lawn."

Amazing place. Are the rooms old? Sure. So what. We booked it as a package from Canada at crazy bargain prices so maybe we’re less annoyed than those who paid a fortune to stay there. It’s a wonderful place. They key to really enjoying it is to never change money there, or use your credit card, or eat anything but the included breakfast and snacks by the pool. Change your cash on the street for literally 3 times their rate. 3 times! There are tons of great restaurants really near by (rule: never eat out at any govt run restaurant, no matter how fancy, only eat at the private ones) that not only accept your money to pay for dinner but will also exchange even more for pesos. Then you go to the National for great drinks and absolutely wonderful non stop music and pay in pesos. Suddenly your $8 drink is now $2.60! Get smart! We’d stay again in a heartbeat. Love this place.

If you are visit Havana you have to stay few nights in this place to feel atmosphere this historical hotel . Minuses : The hotel was probably great and 5 stars 50 years ago. Today it requires renovation on every level. The bathrooms are old, the taps, the toilets require replacement. The hair dryer is 40 years old, overheats after a minute of drying. Forget that you can dry your hair with it. There are no 230 volt sockets. The shower and sink are clogged with sewage because of the old sewage system, which makes the room smell bad. The elevators are not working all the time. I understand that I am in Cuba, and here it’s different standard but why do I pay 400/500 dollars for a room per night if it is not worth the price? Good points : The service is very nice and helpful. This historical building and location are incredibly! From outside building looks very impressive.

The hotel was built since 1930 and it's incredible how preserves floors, lamps and even clocks since its opening.|Gardens are wonderful, you can find chickens and peacocks that walk all over the place. It has an incredible view in the morning. The room was very nice, it was all old style but very well preserved. They have a celebrity floor, where the mafia stayed in the 30's and 40's and there's also a celebrity bar with photos of Robert Redford, Nat King Cole, Errol Flyn and many others.|I loved this hotel. When we return to Havana we will definitely stay here again.

Very beautiful and historic building with nice and friendly staff. The garden is the highlight of the hotel and of course the very interesting tour of the building. The beds are very comfortable and many choices for breakfast. The live music and the events every evening made our day and of course its mysterious atmosphere. The only negative comment is that the rooms were not very clean, as well as the towels or sheets.

The hotel is like a microcosm of Havana - yes it needs money spending on it, but some wonderful people hold it together and make it memorable. |The rooms are kept spotlessly clean and the staff that do this are friendly.|Breakfast is varied and you’ll find an option for you - again served by friendly and attentive staff.|The restaurants are good, especially the traditional Cuban restaurant in the grounds and also the grill outside facing the Malecon. |Drinks are reasonably priced and good.|The pool is great, it’s clean, we always found loungers and the team there are very friendly, with good English.|The Sky bar has amazing views and the beautiful courtyard with live music every night, is atmospheric.|…and the history of the place seeps into you ….||Please tip well, the team here deserves it !

we stayed in an executive room on the sixth floor. very friendly receptionist, we were accommodated exactly in the room we booked with ocean view, huge bed and early check in. specifically on the sixth floor there is a separate restaurant, the food was wonderful. We had problems with the internet, but it was resolved in a timely manner. this is the second time we have stayed at this hotel, the gardens are beautiful and the musicians there are simply some of the best in Cuba.

Third trip to Hotel Nacional de Cuba. Beautiful grounds. Open to the public for historical viewings. Rooftop bar is open at night for an amazing city view. Many bars and restaurants on the main level with live entertainment.

We took advantage of the free tour of the hotel and it was great. Our guide knew every little fascinating detail of the hotel's history and the famous and infamous guests who stayed there. We explored the Spanish bunkers between the hotel and the bay, and had a close-up tour of the suite Maria Felix occupied. Take advantage if you can.
