Hotel Praktik Èssens

"What's the vibe? Most of Barcelona’s alleyway action happens in the Old Town, where passageways the width of a couple holding hands contain secret boutiques. But one of our favorite streets-with-a-treat can be found off Eixample’s Passeig de Gràcia. At the end, there’s the pink-walled El Nacional, a car park–turned–restaurant complex with stunning Art Deco interiors, an oyster bar, and a tapas joint where waiters sing the names of dishes and you order via a me-me-me hand wave. As of 2019, it also has a new neighbor: Hotel Praktik Èssens. The building is a respectful renovation of architect Domènec Bale’s 19th-century Neo-Arab design. Look for the simple black sign set between two olive trees. Give us the backstory on this place.Praktik Èssens is the fifth property from Praktik, a Barcelona boutique hotel brand. Each one boasts a different value proposition: Praktik Vinoteca offers wine tastings, for example, while Praktik Bakery has an in-house bread shop. Èssens is the first hotel-cum-perfumery. If you fail to spot its subtle sign, simply smell your way to check-in. What room category should we book?Get the Premium with Terrace. The other rooms may be great, but that terrace is a feat of beauty: 270 square feet of decking with a waterfall shower, a double day bed, and—squeal!—a teal-tiled outdoor bathtub. How's the Wi-Fi?There’s free wi-fi throughout. What's the dining and drinking scene like? What to do when you have no restaurant? Collaborate with the buzzy brunch spot up the street. Reception offers three packages, from simple croissants to fully cooked feasts. How did you find the service? There's always a risk that stunty details—say, that perfume element—could feel superfluous or forced. Here, though, as a means to personalize your stay, it lends a nice, elegant touch. On arrival, pick your favorite of three perfumes, and watch as all of your toiletries (hand soap, body lotion, shampoo, and conditioner) materialize in that scent. Who stays here?People smug about having scored one of the best—if not the best—hotel location in the city. And everyone smells nice, too. How's the neighborhood?A quiet alley, in the city center, within arm's reach of a gazillion major attractions and restaurants. You get the scene, but you can also get a perfect night's sleep. Win-win. Is there anything you'd change? The coffee area and terrace on the first floor is crying out for an honesty bar with booze. What's the bottom line? This hotel enjoys the ultimate location and has features that are easy on the eyes—and the nose." - Gemma Askham

First time in BCN and I’m so glad I chose this hotel. The location is perfect—close to the metro, a 24/7 convenience store nearby, and within walking distance of many historic spots. The food court right next door is amazing, and the 7–8 pm happy hour is a great bonus. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. I truly enjoyed every part of my stay! Additionally, the water pressure of the shower is also very satisfying. Nothing feels better than a good hot shower after a long day of activities. They also have body lotion for you in the room which is not that common with other hotels I’ve stayed with. They definitely should get points for this! :)

Was a great little boutique hotel in the heart of Passeig De Gracia, stones throw away from the Casa Battlo, Great connectivity by the metro and bus nearby. The staff were helpful and receptive of our requests and made us feel at home. There was a “happy hour” everyday from 7-8pm with some wine, but did not get to experience it, since we were busy exploring Barcelona. We went for the option with breakfast which was provided in the Oassis restaurant, also one of the best we had during our stay in Spain - kept us full for a whole day of exploring and sightseeing!!

Perfect location! The hotel is beautiful and very clean. The room was small, but stylish and practical. There’s a lovely lounge area with free coffee and morning snacks, which was a great touch. The staff were extremely kind and helpful. I would definitely stay here again!

This beautiful small boutique hotel was in a lovely location and overall well-maintained and very clean. Big thumbs up for the complimentary coffee and water. However, it had three significant drawbacks. First, the bed and its mattress were very uncomfortable — when you lay down, you could feel the springs inside. I honestly don’t understand how others have praised the mattress as a positive feature; it urgently needs to be replaced if they want to maintain their rating. Second, although the hotel is called Praktik Essens and the entrance had a wonderful fragrance, this scent was completely absent from the rooms and hallways. A candle or a diffuser would greatly improve the atmosphere. Finally, regarding room 404, it was quite awkward to walk in and immediately face a sink, with no proper bathroom privacy. This layout felt impractical and lacked discretion for guests. In conclusion generally speaking the hotel was cute overall, but definitely pricey for what it offered.

The staff were very helpful; when the mattress in our roof was too soft to provide sufficient back support, they offered to move us to a different room and, even though it was larger, they did not charge us additional. They also had helpful recommendations for local restaurants. The rooms are in excellent condition, but the elevator was out for a few hours at one point. The location is superb; we were able to walk almost everywhere we wanted to go.

I truly enjoyed my stay at the hotel and appreciated the hospitality and comfort provided. I would like to gently mention a small concern regarding the deposit refund process. I have not yet received the refund for my deposit, and I also have not received a reply to my follow-up email. I completely understand that delays can happen and that the team may be handling many requests. For future guests, it might be helpful to consider paying the deposit in cash, as it could make the refund process smoother at check-out. I share this feedback with kindness and in hopes that it may support the hotel in enhancing the communication and guest experience. Thank you once again for the stay, and I wish the hotel continued success.

I really loved the location and rooms in this hotel. The lounge area was really nice to go have coffee in the morning and wine at happy hour. My husband wakes earlier than I do and having this area for him to go to was wonderful. The El Nacional is right next to this hotel and I did occasionally hear people leaving late night, but wasn't bothersome. I would only come here for drinks and small bites. The food was not so great imho. We loved having this nearby for pre dinner or post dinner drinks. Pharmacy right across the way in case you need anything. I would definitely stay here again.

It was my second time staying at this lovely hotel and I would definitely go back again. The rooms are well-equipped, a good size (I stayed in a superior double room) and have big windows with nice views to the street or courtyard. The staff are lovely, very helpful, friendly and thoughtful, and the location is perfect for all the main sights/transport links. And the whole place smells fantastic.
