Hotel Burg Liebenstein | Best castles to stay in

"This character-filled Rhine castle is one of its most famous, rich in the legend of feuding brothers. A small, family-run hotel now operates in the 13th-century main tower. Original features predominate – exposed stone walls, low beamed ceilings and a medieval dining room. The restaurant serves up traditional German dishes in the ‘Knights’ Hall’, and there are tranquil valley views from the panorama terrace.   " - Matthew Roach

From the very first moment we arrived, everything felt perfect. The kindness of the staff, the warm atmosphere, and the incredible view from every room made the experience unforgettable. The castle offers a truly authentic medieval atmosphere—you can genuinely feel transported to another time. The historical artifacts throughout the property beautifully showcase the castle’s rich and diverse history. The hotel itself feels very home-like and intimate, and the owner was exceptionally kind and responsive. One evening, he even entrusted us to stay alone in the castle, which made the experience even more special and surreal. If you come here expecting a Michelin-starred restaurant or the polish of a modern 5-star hotel, this may not be for you. But if you’re looking for something authentic, rare, and soulfully unique, this place may truly be one-of-a-kind in the world. As a small note for improvement, it would be wonderful to address the slight smell from the kitchen and to take some preventative steps regarding occasional insects, which are understandable in a historic building but could enhance guest comfort further. Despite that, this was honestly the best hotel experience I’ve had, and I truly hope to return one day. A well-deserved five stars to the entire team!

High above the Rhine River you can stay and dine here. A very small unique hotel. Breakfast is served old style at your table. Dinner in the lovely dining room overlooking the Rhine River. Staff very helpful and friendly. Parking nearby. No elevator. Narrow stairway to some rooms but that adds to the charm!

My husband and I made our second trip to Europe at the end of July 2024 and he wanted to stay in a castle on the Rhine River. Out of all the castles we have looked at online, we both chose Liebenstein! We were looking for one that did Not look like a hotel! We wanted to stay in one that had the Most authentic Medieval style, and this was the One! We are so glad we chose Castle Liebenstein for it's authentic Medieval charm, as well as Everything it had to offer! We stayed there for two nights, and wished it was longer! Upon getting off the ferry, our cab driver picked us up and took us to the castle. The cab driver was Great with getting us around, when needed. The owner, Klaus and his staff were Very Welcoming and helped us get settled into our Gorgeous spacious suite. Anna kindly helped us get our backpacks up the narrow winding staircase. Haha I've never seen a staircase so narrow! Our room was Beautiful and I Loved how the sitting room was separate from the bedroom. It had a GORGEOUS view of the castle next door, as well Beautiful views of the Rhine River. I felt like Rupunzel in our window, facing the castle, next door. I Loved that our room was so high up! It was Very quiet and so peaceful! The bed was very comfortable, as well as the room's atmosphere. Everything the chef cooked from the 5 course meal, to the breakfasts were EXCELLENT!! The 5 course meal was Extremely Romantic, and we had the Best view of the Rhine. EVERYTHING was so DELICIOUS as well as how Beautifully they were arranged on the plates! You get ALOT of food, so you will never go hungry! The Breakfasts by Klaus, were AMAZING and there was so much Variety of meats, cheeses, breads, jams, sauces, pastries, fruit, and yogurt. The breakfasts were Enjoyable and Cozy! We were seated in a cozy area of the breakfast room and Enjoyed another view by the window. Klaus took good care of us, and made sure we had enough coffee and crumpets during our breakfast both mornings. We explored the Entire castle admiring all the architecture and the Amazing Medieval decor! We thoroughly Enjoyed a glass of wine in the outdoor Cafe, as well as the secluded courtyard, that has Breathtaking views! We explored the grounds outside, and enjoyed being in nature and having peace and quiet. We also Enjoyed the little gift shop that was on site, where we brought back home some treasures. The history of the castle is also Very Interesting! Klaus did an AMAZING job decorating the castle the way it is! We did Not want to leave! We Definitely plan to come back and stay at Castle Liebenstein again in the future! Our stay was AMAZING and we Enjoyed Every bit of it Very Much!! THANK YOU Klaus, Anna, and Chef for making our stay, so BEAUTIFUL and Memorable!! We will be Back! If I could give 10 stars on this castle, I would! HIGHLY Recommend staying here!

Driving the scenic Rhine route is already a treat on its own, but stopping at Hotel-Restaurant-Café Burg Liebenstein near Kamp-Bornhofen really added something extra to our day. We pulled off the road and parked right next to the castle, which is super convenient—no need to climb hills or walk far. The view from the terrace is absolutely worth the stop, with the Rhine stretching out below and vineyards lining the hills. We ordered a glass of Riesling, and I have to say, the waitress didn’t hold back—our glasses were filled right to the rim, which felt like such a nice touch compared to some of the half-filled pours you get elsewhere. It’s not a place you rush through; the relaxed atmosphere invites you to sit back and take it all in. They do have a small hotel and offer shuttle service from their partner hotel in Kamp-Bornhofen if you arrive by train, which makes it accessible even if you aren’t driving. Just keep in mind they don’t accept card payments, so bring cash along to avoid any surprises. While it’s lovely in any season, visiting in spring or summer when you can sit outside is definitely the best way to experience it. The road getting there is narrow in places, but it’s all part of the adventure. It’s not overly touristy, which I appreciated—it feels like a place you just happen upon, with good wine, great views, and a quiet, easygoing vibe that makes you want to stay a little longer.

This was an outstanding experience in an authentic castle. It has outstanding furniture and decorations. The people running the place are extremely friendly, Herr Nickenig and Anna. The included breakfast was excellent. Dinner at the restaurant was a good value with good food. The rooms are quiet, even the ones facing the Rhine River. The view is fantastic. This is an authentic castle so do not expect the same amenities as in a Hilton. The desk closes at around 8 p.m. The rooms have electric heaters, not central heat. We stayed there for two nights during a cold period in October and were very comfortable. If you do not have a car, you must call a Taxi which accommodated seven people at a cost of 20 Euro. We took a regional train into Kamp-Bornhofen from Koblenz. Walking up to the castle from the town is not feasible for most people. Our entire family of 7 stayed there in two separate rooms and enjoyed the experience very much. We would definitely stay there again.

My boyfriend and I had a lovely stay at this authentic castle in September. We stayed for three nights and had a romantic candlelit dinner. The castle itself is very cute and authentic. The interior looks medieval and it's definitely worth a visit based on the experience. We had a room facing the Rhine and it was gorgeous. The cushioned castle seats next to the window were perfect for reading. The hiking around the area is equally as gorgeous. I loved the castle's location because of the proximity to nature and the hiking trails, but they can be strenuous. Even hiking with my suitcase up to the castle was difficult at times, so I advise taking a car up there. The candlelit dinner was made up of 5 courses and will definitely fill you up by the end of it. My only criticism was that the main dish tasted a bit too salty for me. For dietary restrictions, they did well with accommodating my vegan boyfriend. Please make sure to communicate beforehand any dietary restrictions. Unfortunately there was a mix up initially and they did not know he is vegan, but by breakfast they made sure he was well accommodated. Breakfast was lovely and will definitely fill you up. The owner was very nice and overall we had a very good vacation. Please note that they only accept cash. There is a geldautomat in Kamp-Bornhofen, but it would be good to know in advance.

My wife and I spent 2 nights in this wonderful castle. From the moment we checked in, we were treated like royalty. Everything from a supremely comfortable suite overlooking the Rhine, spectacular views, and 5 star meals, made available by Klaus and Anita and presented with warmth and love by Anna and chef de cuisine, Florian. A medieval experience offered up with the modern comforts of today. This has definitely been a visit to cherish in our memories for a lifetime!

This is a very small castle very high above the Rhine with rooms and a restaurant. The public rooms are nice, with lots of armor on display in order to remind you that you are in a castle! Our rooms were small (one was very small) but perfectly OK with great views. I don't think there was central heat in the room, but there was a heater, which was fine. |We had dinner in the hotel (we were hiking from hotel to hotel without a car, so there weren't any other options), and it was quite good.

Yelp
My boyfriend surprised me by booking a night in the castle. According to him, he emailed the person in charge of booking, she asked for his credit card number for holding the room. It didn't sound safe but they also opted to to call or fax. But everything went well. Process was easy. Has small parking, restaurant and cafe. Everything is paid cash. It's a small castle. Their rooms are quaint. No Tv or heating/AC but surprisingly has good insulation in the castle. Dinner was amazing. Breakfast is included with our stay. Our room has an amazing view of the river. This was an amazing surprise.

Yelp
Visited this hotel in 2015 and now again in 2019. The castle itself is located beautifully on a high top hill and offers great views . The furniture of the rooms and restaurant definitely look the part; you will feel taken back into time... However, the room prices are absolutely overpriced at ca 150Euros; the rooms are tiny and offer besides a few basic toiletries a very spartan experience ; no air conditioning, no fans, no hot water , low water pressure in shower heads, you are welcomed by a nasty smell of cigarettes and old fatty foods coming from the kitchen which is located right at the entrance of the hotel. The outdoor beergarden offers great views but dated , unappetizing atmosphere , everything looks and smells dirty.... Bring your own food and drinks, reception closes early at 8.30pm, no grocery stores nearby, only one taxi service in town , that stops working after 10pm. Most restaurants in Kamp-Bornhofen don't serve food after 9pm (this is even during high season). Worthwhile if you have a rental car and are staying only for one night and have no plans to eat there . (Disgusting frozen food that is fried in old grease). Unfriendly management . Felt bad for the Unhappy looking staff.

Yelp
First things first, they don't accept credit card!!! So make sure you bring enough cash! The drive there is your typical European whindy one lane road. The parking lot up near the hotel is very small. We were there in off season so it wasn't very busy, however, it looked like they had seating for a lot of people. Not sure where they would all park. Our room was small and quaint .. but what a VIEW!!! It was well worth the cost. My wife loved it. The bathroom was small, but to be expected in a retrofitted castle. The bed was comfortable, coulda used some more blankets. We slept with the window open and for some reason the sound of the trains every 5 min didn't both us or keep us up all night. They are so quite and it's more like white noise after a while. Breakfast was included and was your typical European breakfast. Sliced meat, cheese, bread and a yogurt. We ate dinner there the first night and it was good (hard to rate as we never had a bad meal the whole trip, they were fabulous!). The staff was nice, some spoke English, some didn't. Overall a good experience and I would recommend staying here.
