"Arnaud Chilo and his sister Marina embody the fourth generation at the helm of this family inn established back in 1937. They brought a breeze of change, illustrated by new furniture and a reappointed dining room, which has happily retained its comforting rustic character, without forgetting the splendid view over the lush valley and the mountains from the terrace. The delicately updated cuisine is liberally sprinkled in fine Basque produce and keeps pace with the seasons: smoked trout; baked pollock in a crust; 7-hour slow-roasted shoulder of lamb…" - Michelin Inspector

Great rooms and memorable restaurant experience, highly recommend visiting if you’re in the area!

Pleasant room, clean and well appointed. As a gay couple, it would have been nice not to have been questioned twice as to whether we really wanted a double bed!! Apart from that, the room was very comfortable. The hotel is quirky in a beautiful site. The breakfast is really good with local breads and jams, fantastic sheep's cheese and good coffee. They also make home made gateaux basques to take away! Highly recommended.

This is a special place, no it is not modern, it ia a 18th century building, with lots of I interesting features. The rooms are not ultra modern, but are comfortable. No, there is no air con. The restaurant is sublime and the surroundings are beautiful and quiet. They like dogs too.

a classic French-looking idyllic hotel-restaurant in Barcus. It was located in a beautiful village among the rolling foot-hills of the Pyrenees, which was an absolutely stunning location! Peaceful and quaint. The food at Chez Chilo was outstanding. The dessert is also a must have! We had the set menu and tried the great local wine. It was an elegant atmosphere and the staff were friendly. The room could do with a little upgrade and that was the only thing which was a little basic. Although the hotel is located by the road, it wasn’t noisy at all. It was a very quiet village and lovely to wake up to the sweet bird singing in the morning! The French breakfast was good quality. Thank you.

Used for a food stop on a long group cycle ride. We did not want a large meal so the owner very kindly made us some baguettes. The location and views were perfect and the service we received was excellent. Very highly recommended.

Chilo is a very simple, old guest house/hotel set in a quaint small village. The hotel backs up onto crop fields, pastures and a mountain range. The building is charming on the outside but old and the rooms are very basic. The upper floor rooms get hot even in September, and will be stifling if you don't leave the windows fully open throughout your stay. The hallways are a bit dark but the dining room, bar, sitting areas and terrace are spacious, bright and comfortable. On balance the facility itself would be 2 or at most 3 'stars'. What makes the experience unexpectedly positive and worthy of 4 stars is the warmth of the service, and exceptional quality of the home cooking. Everyone in our large group routinely dines at "block letter" internationally recognizable restaurants and we all agreed that the fresh tomato and pepper salad was among the best salads we had ever eaten (maybe the best). Similarly, the cheeses, pates, pastas, eggs, fish and various small plates were each simple, unusually delicious and made of notably high quality ingredients. Moreover, the service was very friendly and accommodating. For instance, the hostess went out shopping in the village twice for additional ingredients and prepared supplemental servings for us as a special accommodation. Late arrival and early departure, extra soap and towels and other such accommodations were no problem. I wish every simple rural inn along our trans pyrenees bike route had been as friendly, and their cooks as talented.

This is a lovely, old fashioned type very large house in a rural area. The area is quiet and there are working farms all around. The roads are not too busy but are very rural, twisty roads. The little village of Bardas is very small with just this hotel and one other pub/restaurant. ||This hotel has a very nice and spacious area at the back for relaxing with seats and loungers and it is very peaceful. A perfect spot for holiday reading and chilling. there is a small pool. You can eat outside and we did so along with all the other guests and this is very pleasant but note there are lots of flies in the Summer time.||The food was excellent and when I requested vegetarian food on two evenings I was delighted with what was served. There is a large bar inside which is very pleasant to have a drink in.||Our bedroom was fine and the bathroom was very good.||One drawback because we visited in high Summer was the lack of air conditioning. I slept with the window open and was savaged by a mosquito on one evening. This would not be a problem outside of the Summer.

Perhaps I was unlucky in that my room was right on the street just opposite the local butcher shop. There was suffcient traffic to not wish to open the windows to let out the heat. The room was the most expensive of our holiday and also the smallest. ||The food in the restaurant is overpriced and very strange. There was a great deal on the plate, but tastes were often muddled and the different items on the plate were in conflict rather than harmony. On the positive side it was very pleasant to dine outside.||Breakfast was another curious event. The other places we had stayed at in France served a copious buffet, with plenty of fresh fruit, normal in the summer and very welcome. At Chilo there were tiny quantities of precut fruit in small glasses with clingfilm cover. There were sometimes a couple of croissants in a basket, sometimes not. Everythinmg seemed to be rationed, which was offensive given that this was the most expensive breakfast we had in France.||The "welcome" at the hotel was also not encouraging. The lady looked at us as though we had landed from another planet and shouldn't really be there. Although she thawed a little during our stay, I cannot honestly say that communication was ever spontaneous and natural.||The garden at the back of the hotel is great, sloping down with nice views across to the hills. Unfortunately there is an incredibly loud air extractor on the roof above the kitchen that operates most of the day.||The swimming pool is not kept clean enough out of season and its floor is therefore grimy in parts.
