Where to Go in France if You Love Wine - AFAR

"A 17th-century mansion in Amboise wrapped in foliage with a large garden, period-furnished rooms (about 20), and a bistro where guests can enjoy regional bottles such as a Saint-Estèphe, providing a charming base for exploring the Loire." - Kristin Braswell

Le Clos d'Amboise | Best places to stay in Amboise

"This elegant period house in creamy tufa stone combines the peace of its spacious walled garden (the clos), but also the benefits of authentic small-town life in the animated, historic riverside town of Amboise. The 17 tastefully decorated rooms are all different, with eclectic antiques and funky mirrors, there’s a swimming pool carefully hidden at the end of the garden, while friendly, helpful staff make staying here a real pleasure. It’s the ideal base for exploring the Loire Valley by bike or by car. The chateau is an easy stroll from the hotel; pop into the Bigot patisserie en route for wonderful cakes and chocolate. Our visit to Le Clos D'Amboise Hotel was for 3 days. It has a lovely location and the grounds are well-manicured and welcoming. The breakfast buffet is ample and has many choices to begin your morning: Eggs, meats, cheeses, yogurts, fresh fruit, pastries and breads. Staff is welcoming and willing to help; housekeeping is prompt and thorough. Excellent bedding, linens and towels. We had a soaking tub with an unwieldy shower attachment; not user-friendly for us as seniors but nonetheless, we managed. The hotel does offer a lift to avoid the stairs. There is a highly recommended restaurant and full bar associated with this hotel but we did it have sufficient time to avail ourselves of it. The location is excellent for reaching walkable sites throughout town. We very much enjoyed our stay and highly recommend this hotel to anyone heading to Amboise.

I'm confused by all the rave reviews. This place is clean and ok. But overpriced for the level of the property. Our room was incredibly hot. I turned off the heater completely. Still hot. I tried to crack a window, but someone was using a fireplace nearby, so the room started to smell like smoke, so I had to close it. Then in the morning I tried to crack the window while getting ready- no more smoke, but car exhaust fumes as if I was in a bus depot. Lots of street noise for a small village. The water running through the pipes from rooms above was really loud. and our drains in our bathroom gargled every time someone above us used water. Towels were very small and thin. pictures on here must have been taken with special wide angle lenses. Rooms, even in lobby, are much smaller than they appear. It's a decent location and the staff was very friendly. I booked a breakfast rate - I don't think I'd do that again. The breakfast was just ok. Oh. If you come off season, book their restaurant in advance. there were very few places open for dinner. ALL pizza. Their restaurant was booked. I feel like I paid about 50 euros too much for this compared to the other places I stayed in the region.

We did not know what to expect from a “superior room” at Le Clos d'Amboise. Our experience was more than superior though. The room had a beautiful view of the garden with its 100 year old trees and a distant view of the Saint-Hubert Chapel steeple & next to the royal Château at Amboise. A short 5-7 minute walk from the center of the city, we loved the history of the grounds and the many beautiful images, art, and architecture of the place. Clos Lucé, where Leonardo da Vinci spent his last three years, the Royal Château of François 1er, is also a short 5-7 minute walk. We did early morning walks every day. Highly recommend going to the market by the river - Le marché d'Amboise. The water pressure was great. The bath tub comfortable. And the bed easy to sleep on. One of the best things for us was the morning breakfast. In some ways more flavorful than the breakfast we enjoyed in our Paris hotel, the flavors of the Loire Valley come through with fresh fruits, cheeses, and grains. The hams and sausages did not disappoint either. And, the coffee, just right. If you want an elegant, affordable authentic stay, Le Clos d'Amboise is our suggestion.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A Truly Memorable Experience at Le Clos d’Amboise My husband and I had a small window of time to finish our day in Amboise, and we decided to stop at Hôtel Restaurant Le Clos d’Amboise after seeing a Rick Steves recommendation — what a wonderful choice it turned out to be! The hotel and courtyard are absolutely charming — elegant yet comfortable, with a peaceful atmosphere that invites you to slow down and enjoy the moment. We purchased a bottle of wine (so reasonably priced!) and relaxed outside in the beautiful garden, surrounded by quiet and greenery. Even though we had limited time, the staff went above and beyond to accommodate us. Their kindness and attention made us feel genuinely cared for. The meal we enjoyed was one of the best I had during our entire trip — not just in Amboise, but in Paris and beyond. Every bite was incredible, beautifully presented, and full of flavor. Le Clos d’Amboise is a place that captures the heart — we left wishing we had more time to stay. Highly recommend!

If you were traveling with kids, I recommend the Royal suite. It was really comfortable for family of four. The dinner in the Château was surprisingly very good and I’d recommend eating there. Everything was close to walk to. If you’re there on a Sunday, make sure to go to the market. Keep in mind that things are mostly closed on Sundays and Mondays and I recommend getting some snacks and food at the market ahead of time. The staff was kind, friendly and accommodating. My children loved this place and we all enjoyed it very much. We hope to come back and stay again.

We had an exceptionally enjoyable stay at Le Clos and will certainly write a positive review. We will be travelling to and from the UK from the Lot valley occasionally and we certainly hope we will have many friends making the journey to see us. We will be recommending to those who come by car that beautiful Amboise and Le Clos specifically is the perfect stopover.||||You were worth the little extra money that we normally spend. The decor and atmosphere was high quality, our room super-comfortable, the evening meal excellent, the service from all then staff efficient and friendly and, most important of all, Bruno the dog was made to feel very welcome. He had a lovely stay.||||We hope to see you again.

My cousins and I enjoyed our 4 night stay immensely ! The hotel is situated conveniently near the main plaza and chateau. It is also within easy walking distance of the Caves Ambacia, and the DaVinci House.

We stayed overnight at Le Clos d'Amboise and were very happy with everything. Our host Gregoire was friendly, attentive & helpful. Nothing was too much trouble. He even organised train tickets for us & booked our taxi to the station. The smells emanating from the restaurant were divine & the menu looked amazing. Our room was immaculate & the bed was comfortable with quality toiletries in the bathroom. Beautiful green garden area & a seperate pool were available. Highly recommended!

Yelp
Great restaurant experience. The five and seven course prix fixe are good values. The service and food are top notch. Great wine list from the region.

Yelp
We stayed here for two nights as part of a bike tour of the Loire Valley. The room was beautifully appointed and spacious, with a beautiful view of the courtyard and the spires of the chateaux behind it. The service was excellent, and the location was great, walking distance to everything in town. We also enjoyed the lovely pool surrounded by gardens and bird song. The restaurant on site had delicious food for both breakfast and dinners.

Yelp
This is a wonderful hotel. Very beautiful gardens and relaxing rooms. Had a spectacular stay and would highly recommend this hotel. Breakfast was really nice in wonderfully appointed rooms. It was a great contrast with our stay in Paris. Also, our room did have air conditioning, so it may be wise to ask when booking.

Yelp
This is an ok hotel but it's not a four star like it advertises. Reasons: just ok room decor, a hair on my sheets, some minor stains, a pigeon roost above my window so there was debris and pigeon feathers on my bed when I came back, nice front desk attendant when he is there, broken fixtures in the bathroom left broken. All No big deal if a suite (number 21) didn't cost 295euros per night. If you want a hotel in the area that sets the standard at four and probably approaches five star, check out Hotel Domaine de la Tortiniere.

Yelp
Enjoyable little place to hide away. Next to everything really. Appreciated that the night staff didn't mind us staying up late and reading our jet lag away into the wee hours. Also a wonderful breakfast! Thanks!

Yelp
Wonderful old hotel. Inside the gate is a great jarden and swimming pool. Rooms are relaxing and all are uniquely decorated. Private free parking is a bonus. Staff is extremely helpful and willing to do anything to make your stay comfortable. No a/c in the rooms but the tall ceilings and shade from trees make it comfy

Yelp
Looking for a one night get away from Paris for our 24th wedding anniversary, my wife, after much research, choose this hotel. This was a lovely choice for many reasons. The location is on a quiet street quite near the center of town. The property, an ancient manor house, gives onto beautifully manicured grounds with some of the most magnificent trees imaginable. Toward the back of the gardens is a lovely swimming pool for use in better weather than unfortunately we experienced during our stay. But, never mind. We stayed in one of their basic rooms on the top floor (room 10) and couldn't have been happier. It was as if we were invited into someones home with a guest room only for us. Breakfast, included, is served in the main room on the ground floor and featured a very nice spread of delicious food. The staff of this hotel is helpful and professional without being stuffy. I would highly recommend staying here and I hope that we have the opportunity to stay here again in the not too distant future.
