Where Chefs Go: Oberallgäu, Germany

"This hotel is in Kempten, a larger town that sits in the center of the region. It's owned by an old roommate (and former co-apprentice) and his family, the Heels. [They] cook authentic Bavarian cuisine and their hospitality cannot be matched." - Marguerite Imbert

Where Chefs Go: Oberallgäu, Germany

"In Kempten, a larger town at the center of the region, this family-run hotel owned by Schlegel’s former roommate and the Heels cooks authentic Bavarian cuisine and offers hospitality that cannot be matched; after a night’s sleep here, wake up to a weisswurst and weissbier with a brezel." - Marguerite Imbert

Terrible experience. Only in Germany can you pay €150 per night for a 3-star hotel room without even getting soap and shower gel. Honestly, this hotel should be rated more like a hostel.. The highlight of our stay? During breakfast with my wife and child, a staff member approached us and questioned whether we really intended to eat four pieces of fruit we took for us. Unbelievable. To sum it up: this hotel is a complete disaster.

Friendly staff with some English spoken, I arrived by motorcycle on a very wet day and they put all my wet things into their drying room ready for the next day..very nice. Underground locked parking available for an extra charge and there is ample onsite parking around the hotel. Great food from a large restaurant and there is a buffet style breakfast available is required. The single room was on the small side and there were noises from the wall and ceiling...possibly plumbing ! A clean , bright, comfortable and friendly hotel.

Relaxed area and a bit off from the Autobahn. Charging possible for two cars using ChargePoint. Garage available, however charging stations are located outside. Both breakfast and dinner at the restaurant was great. No air conditioning in the family room.

I cannot praise this little gem enough! The location, the room, the efficiency, their friendliness but above all their mouthwatering food, which they source from the region. I was lucky enough to get to know one of the sons and he even supplied me with a piece of cheese that he made himself whilst working in Switzerland. Just out of this world!!! Now let's start with the room as a solo traveler I had a single room which was good sized with a nice TV. WIFI was great throughout the Hotel. The bathroom was practical and they supply you with shampoo and shower gel. The breakfast is plentiful and they even make their own jams! But the best is their lunch and dinner. Coming originally from that area, I went for the blood and liver sausage on a bed of pickled cabbage. Also the Kaesspaetzle or Cheese buttons cannot be praised enough. I was lucky to stay there on Wednesday as they have the card players evening and one can watch them and maybe understand the game:-) I was very happy there albeit my short stay. Since I was with my motorbike they were kind enough to let me enter the parking garage free of charge. All in all I can say this Hotel is a great place to be!

I booked this hotel at short notice so that we could have easy access to a weekend of skiing in the Allgäu area (all the other hotels that are closer to the ski fields were either booked out or too expensive). I thought the value for money at this hotel was excellent. I had booked a 2-bed room and an adjacent 3-bed room for one night. The food at dinner and breakfast was excellent and the staff very friendly. Our young child was giving colouring in pencils at dinner, which is always a bonus. There was also a small play area for her near the reception area which was handy. We were very happy with our stay! We didn't get to try out the sauna area but will do that next time!

From my perception, this is a typical Hotel for Bus Tours. Nothing outstanding. The breakfast is OK but does not reveal the great Quality of Food available in Bavaria. I found only one musli a bit extraordinary and delicious. The coffee is - as so often in this kind of Hotels - average. (I will never understand, why some Hotels do walk the extra mile and use good italian coffee maker rather then the Automatik Coffeemaker, where coffee - with rare exceptions - allways tasts awfull). - The Feedback, that 50+ Bus Tourists, who grew up with the old coffee brewing might be a bit misleading for Hotels - basically what is acceptable for them, might be for People who experienced good coffee (e.g. Tourists from bigger cities) beyond being acceptable. The Hotels fail unfortunately to often to make an excellent coffee an USP.||||The cakes looked very nice, but where tastewise a bit disappointing as well. The waitresses were not the friendliest ones, but efficient. It is easy to cope with that Service, once you know what to expect.||||However, there are also positive aspects worth mentioning. The People at the reception desk are very friendly, helpfull and certainly willing to walk the extra mile. What we really appreciated was their flexibility in regard to our room arrangements. Also very positive: they have a really practical WIFI-Policy established, which allows you to connect with all your Wifi-Devices and an easy non-cryptic Password. I guess, the positive aspects reflect the influence of the younger Generation, who seems also in Charge.||||Ah, probably the most important: the rooms: they are basically OK. The beds were comfortable and everything was clean. The TV-Sets are small & and a bit old, but I guess, they fit to the room size and there are very little alternatives, which would fit.

Came last night and even before I arrived, my invoice was already printed. A room had already been assigned to me and the man at the reception was fantastic. An employee the owner of this hotel has to be proud off. Breakfast was also good and the entire staff were great and friendly. I highly recommend this hotel to you all.

We stayed a night here when travelling to Italy. We arrived around 01:30 in the morning and were welcomed most graciously (albeit solely in German). Comfy beds, pillows are flat. Hotel room is standard, well kept and clean. Breakfast decent as well, served by a jolly German lady in traditional dress. Perfect for passing through like we were.
