Hotel Santa Maria, Trastevere, Rome, Italy - Explore & Book

"Hidden down a driveway lined with ivy, this is a haven of peace in amongst Italy’s scooter-whirring, sight-packed capital. Glossy-leafed orange trees shade the scrunchy-gravel courtyard at its centre - a glorious summery retreat with flowers and myrtle bushes. Around it are 18 bungalow-style rooms and suites. It's a conversion of a 17th-century convent, and though it has been modernised, the peaceful atmosphere remains. Trastevere is Rome’s loveliest and liveliest neighbourhood; a cobbled maze of bars, restaurants and small shops. Like Paris' Left Bank, you'll find long-term locals mingling with map-flapping tourists, American students, boho alternative types and the occasional homeless person with a dog on a string. The district’s café-ringed main piazza, glinting with magnificent medieval mosaics, is just around the corner. Despite its prime location, Santa Maria is peaceful, the only disturbances being church bells, courtyard chatter and the occasional vivid Italian discussion from the flower-laden apartments around. Highs During our latest revisit, we couldn't tear ourselves away from the courtyard and roof terrace; this is a gorgeous and peaceful retreat in the midst of a busy city A wonderful location within walking distance of many sights, plus great restaurants and bars The huge suites are great for families - some will sleep up to 6. There are double, triple and quadruple rooms, too Staff are friendly and extremely helpful Excellent breakfasts are served under the orange trees in fair weather, or in the cosy breakfast room. Plus a well-stocked wine bar Lows Windows open onto the courtyard so if you want privacy you’ll have to draw the curtains Don't expect designer décor: this place is all about pretty pastels and rustic charm - photos can't capture the scent of citrus trees or the sound of birdsong The communal living area is a little dark; we'd rather lounge in the gardens Two of the bedrooms (Junior Attic Suite and Attic Suite) have very low ceilings The Attic Suite has skylights rather than windows, and rooms vary dramatically in terms of size and layout" - Abigail Blasi

Hotel Santa Maria | Best places to stay in Rome

"Places to stay on Rome’s lively left bank are few and far between, and this three-star hotel in a handsome 17th-century cloister filled with orange trees is one of the best. It’s a peaceful enclave in the centre of one of Rome’s liveliest, most authentic districts. Trastevere’s buzzing trattorias and bars are on the doorstep. Rooms in the former monks’ cells are sunny, if a touch austere. They’re all similar, and look out onto the garden cloister where breakfast is served; those off the second, smaller courtyard are quieter. The various two-level suites, sleeping up to six, are great for families It’s an ideal choice for couples or families who want to visit Rome’s sights while experiencing local life away from the main tourist vortices. The Vatican and the heart of medieval Rome are a 10-15 minute walk away just over the Tiber bridges. " - Rebecca Winke

Beautiful hotel, clean and updated rooms, comfortable beds, quiet oasis in Rome. Great place to relax after a day of sightseeing. 20-30 minute walk to most of the major sights. Trastevere area is lovely and has many nice cafes and restaurants nearby. It is fun to explore the area near the hotel- lots to see and a close walk to the Arno river. The hotel breakfast was one of the best- cappuccino, delicious bread and pastries, eggs, fruit etc. the staff was very welcoming and helpful, arranging pick up from the airport and taxi to the train station. The courtyard with orange trees was lovely. I highly recommend and will definitely stay here again when we return.

Such a charming little hotel in a charming part of Rome. We plan to stay here again when we are fortunate enough to return. The personal service was outstanding. We were greeted by name anytime we interacted with the staff. We would like to call special attention to Jacob at the reception desk and Kevin in the bar. They must be two of the friendliest people in the world. Jacob was most helpful showing us our room, giving information about the area, and arranging a private car to return us to the airport at the end of the trip. Kevin treated me to a birthday cocktail and made the best Aperol Spritz and Negronis. The snacks during happy hour were delicious! Thank you Hotel Santa Maria for being part of the countless wonderful memories we have from Italy and Rome. Grazie mille!

Google
We had an amazing stay at the Hotel Santa Maria in mid November 2025, and we will *definitely* stay here again next time we visit Rome. What really makes this place a 5/5 is the staff. Everyone was extremely friendly and helpful. We interacted most with Armando, Adriano, and Kevin, all three of whom were incredibly friendly. Armando and Adriano work primarily at the front desk, and are full of all sorts of stories and useful advice about what to do and see in Rome. (I really appreciated Armando's advice about Luppolo Station, along with Adriano's advice about restaurants!) Kevin works the bar during most evenings, and will happily chat for hours if he can manage it while making and serving drinks. (He's also great at helping you find a wine you will love!) The location is perfect for exploring Rome. It's close enough to the center that you can walk to most places you'd like to visit in no more than half an hour. The one disadvantage with its location is that it is not particularly close to Termini, so we found it more convenient to take a car to/from the airport than to use the Leonardo Express and then wrestle with bags on public transit. (Staff at the hotel will happily arrange a cab or a private transfer for you.) The property itself is very nice. The rooms are well-appointed; the small roof terrace and the internal courtyards provide plenty of space for sitting and relaxing; and the cloister arrangement produces a most welcome oasis of calm in what can otherwise be a busy and hectic (but in a good way!) neighborhood. Keep an eye out for the resident cats (the friendlier of the two is called Briciola), and definitely take advantage of the daily on-site happy hour!

I never write reviews, but we had such a wonderful experience here that I had to write this. We couldn’t have stayed at a better place for our first time ever to Europe. Hotel Santa Maria definitely set the bar high for our next stops in Europe. The location was perfect, the hotel was very secure and safe, the terrace and breakfast area was super cute, and the happy hour / apertivo was so fun! The drinks and food were yummy. It was the perfect place to start our evenings! The staff was insanely welcoming, helpful, and kind, and always put a smile on our faces! They made us feel like friends versus visitors. We will definitely be back!! Don’t hesitate and book your stay here!

We spent a short 3 days in Trastevere before boarding our cruise and decided to stay at Hotel Santa Maria—and it was a fantastic decision. We couldn’t have been more impressed. The staff were warm and welcoming, the happy hour was a great touch, the rooms were spotless and comfortable, and the amazing breakfast was exactly what we needed each morning. The location turned out to be perfect for exploring this beautiful part of Rome on foot. We truly enjoyed every moment of our stay and will definitely return soon!

The staff made the entire visit outstanding. We would travel to Rome again just to visit this hotel. We had room number 1. It was very quiet and private. We were treated with espresso and croissant upon our early arrival, birthday drinks, delicious snacks and breakfast served in a wonderfully inviting way And our luggage was handle efficiently and gracefully. The room and bathroom was clean and smelled fresh and towels were restocked as needed. Bravo and Grazie Melinda and Jim Gould USA

Google
Great vibe and very good value, exceeded our expectations. We picked this hotel after reading very positive reviews and it turned out to be a great choice. Super friendly and helpful staff, good breakfast. Clean and well run hotel. Good location for exploring Trastevere and even the city center is a quick 20-30min walk away. Only constructive feedback I have is that the lounge was very cold (in December), perhaps a small heater would be great. Looking forward to visiting again.

Google
The best day of our Italy trip was provided by Hotel Santa Maria. Everything everyone has reviewed about the overall service and the wonderful space is absolutely true, so I won't repeat it here. The aperitivo cocktails and romantic atmosphere were superb. I had dinner and lunch at restaurants in the Trastevere district recommended by the front desk staff (who also helped us navigate and park our unfamiliar car in the narrow streets—much appreciated!), and both were the best restaurants during my entire five-day trip to Italy. Arrivederci!

Yelp
There are so many positive aspects of Hotel Santa Maria, it's hard to pick just a few to highlight. From the moment you arrive, you can feel the stress of travel disappear. You are in the heart of Trastevere, which is lovely, but can be overwhelming. Once you're inside the hotel and sit in the courtyard, you can't believe you're in the same neighborhood. It's quiet and serene. Plus, if you are an animal lover, there are a few cats that live in the apartments around the property and will visit throughout the day. Everyone who works at Hotel Santa Maria was so nice and respectful. The front office goes above and beyond to make your experience unforgettable. They provide you with the top sights that cannot be missed in Rome but also have the knowledge to provide curated experiences depending on what you may want to do. A huge selling point is breakfast. Not only is the food amazing, but the service is top notch. Marvin and Maverick turn a simple meal like breakfast into such a wonderful time. They are amazing, hard workers and I miss spending my mornings with them. If Norman is working the breakfast, make sure you order a cappuccino so you are able to see his coffee art. In the evenings, there is also a happy hour. You have drinks and a huge spread of bruschetta, cold cuts, little sandwiches, and other finger foods. The best part is, the food changes daily so you are never bored with the options. Kevin makes the most delicious spritz and it's a great way to reset after a long day of sightseeing. As a solo female traveler, this was the perfect hotel for me. Between the locked gate to enter the property and someone working the front desk overnight, I felt incredibly safe. I stayed at the property for 13 nights which is different from most guests. However, guests ranged from other solo travelers, families with children, couples of all ages, and groups of friends. This is truly a one of a kind hotel. I cannot wait to be back to see everyone at Hotel Santa Maria!

Yelp
This is an outstanding hotel. The facility is nice, the courtyard is fantastic, and the rooms are just right. But what moves this to outstanding is the staff. They are so friendly and hospitable. Truely like staying with family as they work with you and helped us! Thank you!!!!

Yelp
Best hotel in Rome. Nicest staff. Centrally located. Not super fancy but a lovely courtyard arrangement of rooms .

Yelp
Hotel Santa Maria is such a gem, I hate to tell too many people about it! It is an oasis in the middle of Trastavere, Rome. The service is incomparable. The garden is so calm and lovely. The sheets are crisp and cool in the summer heat, and the pillows were like a cloud. The staff is so friendly you will ask yourself "Why can't all service be like this?!!" Adriano and Norman and Maverick outdid themselves during our stay with warmth, humor, and kind service. Norman's espresso drink designs were so great! Each day, he made us new ones, to our delight. The Italian cakes at breakfast were my favorites. And croissants to die for. We had a wonderful time in Rome because of Hotel Santa Maria - our refuge from crowds at the end of a long day. The shower is so refreshing - literally the best shower pressure of my life - it will feel like a spa. And the towels are long enough to wrap you up. And, somehow, they have an A/C system that cools the room without making you feel like you are in an icebox. The "Santa Maria" Aperol spritz during the early evening aperitivo made every evening a lovely celebration. The soaked oranges were heaven. And the pistachios crisp and delicious. Do not hesitate to book this glorious hotel!! Wish I lived closer!! All best (the girl from California who loved your drinks!!)

Yelp
We stayed at the lovely and peaceful Hotel Santa Maria in May 2024. Such a perfect location away from the maddening crowds in Rome! We experienced extremely helpful employees and management!

Yelp
I can't say enough about this hotel! Small but adorable and filled with super friendly staff and located near so many amazing restaurants in Trastevere! It's also located within walking steps to the amazing Basilica di Santa Maria (a must see!) The staff was so accommodating in making a reservation for us at Felice before we arrived in Rome, they also helped us book a tour for the Coliseum, answered any questions we had, and always gave us directions to get where we were heading, and booked our car to the airport for our departure. Although the walls were pretty thin in the hotel rooms and we could hear a great group of women talking loud and watching their tv, our experience was just amazing and I would say without hesitation I'd come back and recommend it to anyone visiting Rome for the first time!

Yelp
Lovely place, and lovely staff, in the Trastevere neighborhood of Rome. Clean and quiet. Just a few kilometers from the Vatican. They have a very nice complimentary breakfast with absolutely perfectly brewed cappuccino. One of the breakfast servers is a serious flirt Staff are very helpful with all of your needs. Rooms of many sizes and configurations are available, from singles to large family sizes. Lovely orange trees in the courtyard with seating - the perfect place to enjoy a glass of wine. Just around the corner from the Piazza de Santa Maria with a fantastic cathedral. Many nice restaurants and shops within a short walk. Cobblestone streets, beautiful people. I will return as soon as I can. Book ahead, it fills up.

Yelp
Stayed here while visiting my daughter attending John Cabot University. I love this hotel! The bed was comfy. The room was quiet. There is a nice courtyard for drinking coffee in the morning and relaxing and journaling at the end of the day. The staff are very friendly and attentive. They have gluten free options for breakfast, and the breakfast is quite hearty and nourishing with many items to choose from. Trastevere is a lively neighborhood with a plethora of restaurants, cafes, and specialty shops. I would definitely stay here again. A bonus: the barista makes cappuccinos with artwork in the foam, including an impressive portrait of my daughter!

Yelp
Right now I am drinking Proseco under an orange tree. This is what I envisioned when I pictured experiencing Italy. The Hotel Santa Maria is an oasis! Nestled in the unique neighborhood of Trastevere, the Hotel only has 19 rooms. Our room, Room #21 has 2 beds downstairs and 2 small beds in the loft. Perfect for a family of 4! A large bathroom and ample AC, this room offers you a wonderful stay. The staff is wonderful! So attentive, so friendly. They will make reservations for dinner, call you a taxi, provide you with a great complimentary breakfast all with a smile and a PREGO! At 5:30 every afternoon, they offer a complimentary Happy Hour, food, not drinks. After sightseeing all day, it's a perfect chance to unwind until you have your Roman dinner. I have no idea when I will return to Rome but I will. The Hotel Santa Maria is where I will stay! Bravo!

Carl C.

Yelp
Customer service here is Garbage. I accidentally booked a room here immediately upon realizing my mistake I reached out to them to get my refund. $105.00 they refused me. So, I guess they desperately needed my money. I wouldn't have even given them 1 star. But I had to.

Yelp
What a lovely little oasis, a garden in the heart of a major metropolis. From the desk staff (who were happy to let us leave our luggage after check out and gave us a place to change before our train) to the bar guy who made our coffees and poured our mimosas with a smile and a joke, people seemed happy to make our stay a pleasant one. Two separate courtyards and a veranda, a delicious breakfast AND happy hour spread, a clean and pleasant room, all this added up to a wonderful first night in Italy.

Bob Y.

Yelp
You absolutely have to stay at this place - my wife and I will be back for sure! This hotel is truly a wonderful place to stay in Trastevere and is a perfect complement to the entire area on the south bank of the Tiber River. This is a hidden away, secret place that is like finding a diamond ring on a sandy beach! There are so many ways to describe it (charming, peaceful, romantic, intimate). No matter how you describe it, the place and the people exude relaxing charm that will be memorable and delightful for sure! We can't say enough about the staff - their attention to detail and willingness to bend over backwards for just about anything was truly wonderful. Everyone from Anjana at the front desk to Maria on the cleaning staff were full of delightful joy and such infectious character and happiness! Always smiling and always pleasant, they even agreed to keep some of our luggage and goodies we picked up during our stay while we went to Palermo for the weekend - and they didn't even charge us though we paid them! They made the great place just that much greater! I think the hotel is a converted monastery or convent or something - but it's fantastic and fits right in to the area! The neighborhood is delightful and authentic, surrounded by classic traditional restaurants and shops. It is very close to Rome's historic center. We had two rooms (my wife and I in one, my mother in the other...of course!) that connected to the internal quad filled with fruit trees, flowers and classic local greenery. I truly enjoyed waking up in the morning and hearing birds chirping with the morning sun peeking through the trees. The space is adorned with benches, tables and chairs where one can enjoy a peaceful breakfast just as easily as they could a tall cold Peroni. The rooms themselves are just as charming with SUPERIOR beds (slept like a rock), elegant furniture and excellent air conditioning. Though the rooms had an LCD TV and wi-fi, my wife and I found ourselves enjoying a great conversation in the courtyard with each other or with other guests or with the staff. Of course we frequented the bar with a quite extensive wine selection, great local beers and even a great happy hour! We had breakfast provided every morning that included classic offerings in a wonderful space that could seat quite a few people - they even offered to make us a "to-go" breakfast on the days we were heading out early! We could rent a bike to ride around Piazza Santa Maria Square, but we were interested in walking the city and enjoying the endless restaurants and shops on foot. And the cost? You wouldn't believe how reasonable it is! Trust us - this place will remind you of a classic Italian hotel described in any typical romantic Italian novel or movie. You have to see it to believe it!

Yelp
BEWARE! Do not give this hotel your credit card number. They are scammers!! I made a reservation in February for 3 nights in July. They immediately charged my credit card for all three nights! Now, because of the global pandemic, I cannot go to Italy. They refuse to refund my money. What happened to the honest business practice of payment for services rendered? There were no services rendered. I paid them $699.00 just for making a reservation. Unscrupulous business practices. Do not book here!!!

Brian W.

Yelp
A beautiful hotel online. But buyer beware! I had the travel insurance thru Expedia with this fine hotel. COVID-19 hit in April and we had to cancel our trip to Europe and they refused to reimburse my expenses stating I had to be sick or have a death in the family. Global Pandemics at that time were not on the list of refundables. So Expedia and this Hotel do not help customers at all. I was out ALL my expenses. BEWARE....

Yelp
LOVE this hotel! A peaceful oasis in the heart of Rome. The staff is friendly and attentive. Lovely breakfast each morning included. After a busy day of sightseeing we looked forward to the happy hour each night, which included a delightful assortment of snacks. The courtyard in the center of the rooms was full of orange trees decorated with little lights, creating a serene space to walk through on our way to bed. So nice to sleep without hearing traffic and tourists late into the night. Favorite place to stay out of my four trips to Rome. Would loved to have stayed again if it wasn't all booked!!

Yelp
Fantastic location, quiet location, perfect place to stay. Plenty of good restaurants and sights. Large rooms You could do much worse!

Yelp
A quiet hotel located in the rural area called Trastevere. The rooms are clean and nothing to postpone. We got tips that this hotel is well known for their breakfast, but is nothing out of the ordinary. The prize for the rooms is around 200 euro, a little stiff even in Rome.

Yelp
We stayed 4 nights and loved it! Great location off main piazza, lovely quiet grounds, staff so friendly & helpful (esp. dinner reservations!). Loved breakfast bar in am, aperitivo in early pm. Would go back in a heartbeat!

Yelp
Had a great stay in the Santa Maria hotel with my family! There is 5 of us and we stayed in a single room that sleeps 5 people (1 double bed, 1 single bed and 1 bunk bed) and we had plenty of room, its a perfect room for a weekend city break but I wouldn't stay in it for over a week! The staff were so nice here, warm and friendly receptionists and you can enjoy complimentary breakfast and coffee which was a good selection of eggs criossants and meats and the cappucinos are lovely :) when you have a drink in their bar you always receive peanuts/crisps etc which is a nice touch and staff are always there to help you! The hotel is quite small so you feel very well looked after as it is quite a private place, great for people who want a quiet stay. The location is good aswell as it is in travestere so there is a metro close by, a church and many lovely restaurants to indulge in! Great atmosphere in this area. Overall a great stay in Santa Maria for our first trip in rome! Big thank you to their team. O Briens, room 2 24th - 26th Jan 2015.

Yelp
In the most lively, exciting neighborhood in Rome, this small hotel is a true gem. Set back from the street, you enter through a gate to a quiet garden. Each room feels like it's own apartment in a quaint neighborhood of its own. The breakfast was delicious and plentiful. Staff was friendly and helpful. Very close to Piazza Santa Maria in Trestavere, and also close to many great bars and restaurants. I would recommend this to couples and families looking to stay clear of a typical tourist experience in Rome.

Yelp
The perfect boutique hotel for our family of 4. The rooms are clean and well stocked. Ours had a queen sized bed and a bunk bed for our teen aged kids. The vibe in the Trastevere neighborhood was awesome. This is a Hot Spot on Saturday nights. There is a Taxi stand a block away. Most tourist attractions are less than a $10 Euro trip. Breakfast is included and is wonderful!!

J. L.

Yelp
We loved this hotel for our one night stay in Trastevere. Small but beautiful rooms. The courtyard is unbeatable... enjoying morning coffee and breakfast as well as happy hour at bistros under orange trees. The staff is wonderful and very helpful. Location is great. Would highly recommend.

Elizabeth P.

Yelp
Wonderful small hotel. The rooms very clean with all that you might need. The breakfast and happy hour snacks fabulous! The staff very accommodating. A great location within the Trastevere area. Very safe. Loved the quiet solitude of it after a long day of touring in Rome.
