Check-In Experience|We arrived at the hotel around 12pm after an early morning of travel. From the moment we entered, there was a noticeable smell of damp throughout the property. We were informed that our rooms were not yet ready, and we asked if there was anywhere we could shower or freshen up. We were told to use the basement toilets (where there was no shower), which was not a viable option due to our heavy suitcases and the multiple flights of stairs. As a result, we were forced to get changed in the hotel lobby — an experience that felt undignified and extremely uncomfortable.|To add to this, after we had changed in the lobby, we were told by another staff member that one of our rooms had been ready the entire time. This meant we had dressed in the lobby unnecessarily. During this time, one staff member in the lobby had a strong and unpleasant body odour, which made us feel sick.|Room Issues|I had paid extra for an upgraded room, but what we received did not reflect this in any way as the second room was exactly the same. Upon receiving our key card, we were told to carry our luggage up two flights of spiral stairs, with no offer of help from staff. This was not only exhausting but also unsafe, and it took us nearly 20 minutes. The carpet on the stairs was dirty, worn, and smelled unpleasant.|The room itself was very small, dark, and had a strong old damp smell. It felt unclean and uninviting. The following issues were noted:| |No mirror in the main room, and no nearby sockets to use hair styling tools. Along with no full length mirror in the hotel at all.|There were holes in the carpet in the room itself, adding to the sense of poor maintenance and neglect.|The only mirror available was in the bathroom, which steamed up quickly and took a long time to clear.|The toilet was positioned awkwardly, making it uncomfortable for anyone taller than 5'6" to sit on it without their knees touching the wall.|No bathroom storage, so we had to live out of our suitcases.|I requested additional hangers at check-in and again later that day, only to be told eventually that none were available.|The “upgraded” room was no different from our friends’ standard room, except ours had twin beds instead of a double — no added value despite the extra charge.|Shower sprayed water in all directions due to the shower head not being cleaned.|The shower had a leak and caused flooding in the bathroom.|Towels left for replacement came back smelling damp, with makeup stains, creases, and did not seem freshly laundered.|Toilet roll was not replaced on our second morning.|We encountered spiders in the room, which further questioned the cleanliness.|I wiped the main door handles with disinfectant wipes and found them covered in dirt.|We could see the air was dusty when the AC and reading light were on, raising hygiene concerns.|Additional Concerns|Walls were very thin; we could hear music and early morning noise from neighbouring rooms, making restful sleep difficult. I was woken very early morning every day to them leaving their room.|One afternoon, my friend went to reception to ask for water and found a staff member asleep at the desk, with a pillow on the counter.|The area surrounding the hotel did not feel safe, especially when returning late in the evening.|On our final morning, I discovered old dried blood on the bottom of the bed while checking for any belongings before departure.|Once again, we were required to carry our heavy bags down two flights of spiral stairs, with no assistance offered.|Overall we did not find the staff very friendly or inviting.|Health Impact|Since returning home, I have been unwell with a sore throat and congestion. I strongly suspect this is related to the conditions in the hotel. I’ve had to take time off work as a result, which is deeply frustrating.
