The 31 Best Restaurants in Kolkata (Calcutta), India | Eater

"Hotel Siddheswari Ashram is one of the city’s few surviving pice hotels. Inside the unassuming dining hall, men in bright orange shirts scurry among the marble-top tables with quiet urgency, taking orders, pouring water into earthen pots, or swiftly plunking wedges of lime and blobs of salt onto plates lined with banana leaves. In pice hotel tradition, the menu is handwritten on a blackboard; the spread, and the prices, depend largely on what’s best at the bazaar that day. You can usually take your pick from dishes like shukto (a bitter stew of assorted vegetables), lentils cooked with fried fish head, a robust mutton curry that everyone praises, or a light stew of fish and vegetables called kabiraji jhol, a typical sick-day meal in Bengali homes." - Priyadarshini Chatterjee

Visited in 2022 when one of my friends took us to this place. Food was served on banana leaves. There were not many vegetarian options. I had rice, with some curry, which was okay. My friends tried various fish and meat dishes and said the food was good.

There are no words to describe this place! The real local taste of Bengal. We came to know that this place is at least 50 year old. There is always rush hence expect some waiting and you might also have to share your table with someone. There are a lot of items specially for Non vegetarians. We tried Bhetki curry with Rice and it was delicious even the Veg items were pretty Descent.

Fresh and most authentic bengali food! The taste was amazing. It tastes like home cooked food, except it better some how! Service is quick. We went around 4pm so it was one of the last batches for lunch. Still everything was perfect. My personal fav was chingri malai curry. The quantity they give you is more than enough, and prices are super affordable! We got around 10+ dishes (including prawn, fish and mutton) the total came to 800rs You'll never find food as authentic, prices as affordable people as lovely and taste as good as here. One of the best pice hotels! 💜💜

*SEAT PROBLEM AND ALWAYS MISCALCULATE THE FINAL, You END UP PAYING EXTRA. There are excellent things about this place but couple of major cons also there and for that reason i will not visit this place again. I will keep this review very short. First positives: Food is tasty its like Bengali wedding home's morning food, so taste is good. Price is absolutely perfect according to pice hotel system. There are some pice hotel in Kolkata and charge bomb like a premium fine dining, they are not like this. Hygienic, yes you can't expect fine dining restaurant hygienic things but you will not feel bad or not found any dirty things around, they are quick to clean. Now the NEGATIVES: FOR ME THESE ARE BIG NO-NO. We visited friday around 2 pm and we have to wait atleast for 25 minutes for getting the seat, and that too arranged somehow in the table of 4 we sit 5 and sharing table with unknown 3 people, literally no place for keeping plates. I NEVER WAIT IN ANY RESTAURANT FOR GETTING THE SEAT, I AM PAYING FOR THAT FOOD ITS NOT FREE FOOD THAT I HAVE TO WAIT, THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF RESTAURANT ARE THERE SO I WILL NOT THIS AGAIN AS I DIDN'T IN THE PAST. 2ND point they messed up the calculation and charge me extra 50rs and i found out they used to messed up the calculation almost in regular basis almost with every customer, i didn't counter them because of the rish and i paid extra. Absolutely poor service first you don't give receipt then you mis calculate and why mis calculate in your favour only? They never miscalculate in their loss. So I WILL NOT VISIT THIS PLACE AGAIN. YOU GO WITH YOUR OWN RISK.

I believe this place represents an authentic Bengali experience. The location is inconspicuous, set in the middle of a crowded and dingy lane. However, once you climb the narrow step of stairs, the view of eager patrons waiting for their bite of heaven is reassuring. Our waiter, Bhagirath Dada, welcomed us with an enthusiastic smile. He was kind enough to recommend the right dishes to us. Their Betki Sorse and Chingri Malai was top notch. Mutton Kosha was an able ally to the sumptuous lunch. My wife, a vegetarian, enjoyed the regular veg meals consisting of dal, bhaja and a new dish made of neem leaves (we forgot the name). Capped it off with the best Mishti Doi I've had. All in all, a resounding recommendation for those looking for authentic Bengali food sans a lush ambiance. A must for a revisit!!

If you want to have authentic bengali food, do visit this place. Food is too good along with hospitality. There is feel of 1947 era when bengalees swadeshis were struggling for independence and used to come and have food

Nostalgic Fusion of the Old times taste tradition with current trends time. Place is itself like a Treasure hunt, hiking from the narrow lanes entering in a ale with old style residence climbing up the stairs and found your self in the luck if not a long line of un familiar faces around waiting for the turn for the food. 😀😁 Enough Nekaamo . So here you have option of Normal sitting in chair table , floor with old time aasun ( sitting carpet) Or AC room * ( 2 only) 8 seating at a time. Price differs 10-30 per item Food - daily change with availability of raw ingredients. But on Avrage common Rice - Normal & Fine Daal - plain & special * thick ghee add Posto bora - Treasure ( limited) Alu bhaja( jhuri) crunchy * Mutton - 2/4/ pieces plate Chiken Fish ( varieties a lot ) ( rohu/ koi/ aar/ sole/ catla/ tangra/ Pomfret/ hilsa / chingri/ chital peti/ *( fish tok ) Sabji - 2 types ( one would be veg ) another mixed with fish head or fish Ending chatni ( aam/ tomato/ pinaple) Misti doi Papar Plate servered in Banana leaf ( kola pata) Onion lebu chili, Water bottle available Mati glass available ( charged) Tip - need to have patience, small area handling huge hungry 😋 foodies and the servers ( waiter) have to deal a lot maybe sometime mistakenly messed up with item. Also food brings you happiness you can tip and transfer the happiness to the server so the next time will it comeback to you
