The 31 Best Restaurants in Kolkata (Calcutta), India | Eater

"Hotel Siddheswari Ashram is one of the city’s few surviving pice hotels. Inside the unassuming dining hall, men in bright orange shirts scurry among the marble-top tables with quiet urgency, taking orders, pouring water into earthen pots, or swiftly plunking wedges of lime and blobs of salt onto plates lined with banana leaves. In pice hotel tradition, the menu is handwritten on a blackboard; the spread, and the prices, depend largely on what’s best at the bazaar that day. You can usually take your pick from dishes like shukto (a bitter stew of assorted vegetables), lentils cooked with fried fish head, a robust mutton curry that everyone praises, or a light stew of fish and vegetables called kabiraji jhol, a typical sick-day meal in Bengali homes." - Priyadarshini Chatterjee

This is one of the oldest and most popular and my personal favourite pice hotel in Kolkata, this place serves truly authentic Bengali food on banana leaves. Pice hotels are a unique part of Kolkata’s food culture, most of them starting in the early 1900s to provide simple, home style fresh Bengali meals to employees, workers, and students who had migrated from different parts of Bengal to Kolkata, then the only major urban center in eastern India. The word “pice” comes from “paisa,” as in those days dishes were priced at just one paisa. These hotels are living heritage, still preparing food in the traditional Bengali way. Another interesting fact about pice hotels is that their menus are never fixed. They change daily depending on what vegetables and ingredients are available in the local market each morning. That’s why you will often see the day’s menu written on a board, either with chalk or a marker, outside the hotel. The food here is delicious, with Bhapa Rui and Postor Bora being their standout specialties. I did find the prawn malai curry a little disappointing, but overall the flavors were authentic and satisfying. The staff are polite and helpful, though be prepared for large crowds on holidays.

Hotel Sidheswari Asram is a wonderful place to dine! I liked it so much food quality and taste are absolutely top-notch. This place specializes in authentic Bengali food, and every dish feels homely, flavorful, and freshly prepared. The prices are very affordable, making it a perfect spot for anyone who wants a great meal without spending too much. Truly one of the best places for enjoying Bengali cuisine. Many people eat here on an everyday basis, so the food feels just like homecooked prepared with less spices and oil, yet full of flavor Recomendations from my side :- Ruhi Bhapa and Posto Bora. Highly recommend

A Taste of Home at Hotel Siddheswari Ashram! Hotel Siddheswari Ashram on Rani Rasmoni Road, Kolkata, is a fantastic Bengali hotel that perfectly embodies the spirit of a classic Pice Hotel. This place is a culinary haven for anyone craving authentic, home-style Bengali food that's cooked with less oil and spice. The food is incredibly delicious and genuinely tastes like homemade. We savored their delicious daal, crispy fries, and flavorful posto bora. The variety of fish items is impressive, with the bhapa rui and chingri malai curry being absolute standouts. The mutton and chicken curries are also superb. The well-behaved staff and reasonable price add to the pleasant experience. Despite its old-style house feel, the place feels fresh and new. With its great food and homely atmosphere, this spot offers a truly comforting dining experience.

Visited in 2022 when one of my friends took us to this place. Food was served on banana leaves. There were not many vegetarian options. I had rice, with some curry, which was okay. My friends tried various fish and meat dishes and said the food was good.

There are no words to describe this place! The real local taste of Bengal. We came to know that this place is at least 50 year old. There is always rush hence expect some waiting and you might also have to share your table with someone. There are a lot of items specially for Non vegetarians. We tried Bhetki curry with Rice and it was delicious even the Veg items were pretty Descent.

*SEAT PROBLEM AND ALWAYS MISCALCULATE THE FINAL, You END UP PAYING EXTRA. There are excellent things about this place but couple of major cons also there and for that reason i will not visit this place again. I will keep this review very short. First positives: Food is tasty its like Bengali wedding home's morning food, so taste is good. Price is absolutely perfect according to pice hotel system. There are some pice hotel in Kolkata and charge bomb like a premium fine dining, they are not like this. Hygienic, yes you can't expect fine dining restaurant hygienic things but you will not feel bad or not found any dirty things around, they are quick to clean. Now the NEGATIVES: FOR ME THESE ARE BIG NO-NO. We visited friday around 2 pm and we have to wait atleast for 25 minutes for getting the seat, and that too arranged somehow in the table of 4 we sit 5 and sharing table with unknown 3 people, literally no place for keeping plates. I NEVER WAIT IN ANY RESTAURANT FOR GETTING THE SEAT, I AM PAYING FOR THAT FOOD ITS NOT FREE FOOD THAT I HAVE TO WAIT, THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF RESTAURANT ARE THERE SO I WILL NOT THIS AGAIN AS I DIDN'T IN THE PAST. 2ND point they messed up the calculation and charge me extra 50rs and i found out they used to messed up the calculation almost in regular basis almost with every customer, i didn't counter them because of the rish and i paid extra. Absolutely poor service first you don't give receipt then you mis calculate and why mis calculate in your favour only? They never miscalculate in their loss. So I WILL NOT VISIT THIS PLACE AGAIN. YOU GO WITH YOUR OWN RISK.
