"Hotel Siddheswari Ashram is one of the city’s few surviving pice hotels. Inside the unassuming dining hall, men in bright orange shirts scurry among the marble-top tables with quiet urgency, taking orders, pouring water into earthen pots, or swiftly plunking wedges of lime and blobs of salt onto plates lined with banana leaves. In pice hotel tradition, the menu is handwritten on a blackboard; the spread, and the prices, depend largely on what’s best at the bazaar that day. You can usually take your pick from dishes like shukto (a bitter stew of assorted vegetables), lentils cooked with fried fish head, a robust mutton curry that everyone praises, or a light stew of fish and vegetables called kabiraji jhol, a typical sick-day meal in Bengali homes." - Priyadarshini Chatterjee

Hotel Siddheshwari Ashram · Type: Bengali Pies Hotel · Address: 19, Rani Rashmoni Road, Janbazar, Kolkata | Although people know it as Siddheshwari, the shop's dress code is 'Hotel Siddheshwari Ashram'. As the saying goes, the cultural identity of any place carries its own flavor. The beauty of such places is that the volume is huge and the raw materials (fish and vegetables) are bought fresh from the market every morning. Not refrigerated meat/fish As with most Pais hotels, there is no printed menu card. There were 2-3 menu boards on the wall with names of many dishes. Established in 1938 by the late Khudiram Sarkar, it is currently owned by Rita and Devyani Sen. This is a place where foodie actors Phir Biswas and Tulsi Chakraborty used to frequent their famous Kabiraji jhol, a special dish made with plantains, papaya, potatoes. With minimal oil and ginger and cumin as spices. Siddheshwari's menu is now more contemporary. Nowadays their menu card has a wider range of fish, meat items. If you are in the city, this hotel is a must visit with the family for an authentic Bengali food experience. #KolkataFoodie #PiceHotelDiaries #BengaliCuisine #AuthenticBengaliFood #TasteOfKolkata #BengaliFoodLovers

After a hectic day at work, I wanted to Eat like a horse, so went to the nearest eatery that was serving authentic Bengali cuisine from past 90 odd years. When I entered a huge crowd was there waiting for their turn, I thought the food must be delicious😋😋. But to my surprise the place was damn dirty. Leftover is still there on the table and floor, the service was very poor. Finally comes the food, I had Chingri malai curry and Macher matha diye ghonto, juri aloo bhaja, plain dal. The food was woeful, all my expectations went down the drain. Every food items was cold and tasteless. Came out with lot of disappoints and regrets.

I have heard about this place from youtube that they serve authentic bengali fish. During my trip from nepal to kolkota, I went there to try bengali fish on very first day in kolkota as I have heard a lot that bengali fish is very delicious, unfortunately it didn't meet my expectation. Hotel staff were not cooperative, there was not much crowd there but they keep on ignoring me and have to wait for a long time to get my food.

The food was very tasty. But the seating area is very less. The environment outside is not very comfortable. Waiters are very slow in serving food. Have to sit for long time to serve food.

One of the best Bengali food destination. Food test the best, atmosphere is mostly old, they have small seating arrangements in AC though. Old model of low price restaurant is still working! They keep the old architecture and old seating arrangements, thanks them for it.
