33 Places Famous for the Scandals That Occurred There

"Walking westward along 24th Street in Manhattan, halfway down between 5th and 6th Avenues, there is a small gap between the buildings. Currently a parking lot, the address Number “22” once belonged to a building that no longer exists, collapsed in 2007 after years of neglect. On Number 24 next door, imprints of Number 22 can still be seen etched into the brick walls; marks where a flight of stairs would have been, the remnants of the floors, and the slant of the roof. This ghostly impression is all that remains of New York’s greatest architect and spoiler of women, the seducing chambers of Stanford White. By the turn of the 20th century, Stanford White was a leading light in New York society. As the pre-eminent member of legendary Manhattan architecture firm McKim, Mead & White, he transformed New York from grimy brownstones and the slums of the Bowery into the glittering Beaux Arts city we know today. His masterpieces include the Washington Memorial Arch in the Village, the original Pennsylvania Station, the Players Club and the 5th Avenue mansions for the Astor and the Vanderbilt families.  Stanford lived principally in the original Madison Square Garden, on what is now Madison Square Park, his home a tower topped with a gold naked statue of Diana—but across the park in the dingy side streets of West 24th St, the Pharaoh of Fifth Avenue kept his concealed love lair.  By the time she was 16, Evelyn Nesbit was the most photographed and famous woman of her era. The original Gibson girl, she was spotted on stage by White, who showered her with lavish gifts until she consented to come to lunch on West 24th St. With nothing much to look at from the outside except for a shop window for the original FAO Schwarz on street level, the inside was a different world. Regarding her first visit to White’s abode, Evelyn described “the sudden plunge from the dingy street entrance into this room was breathtaking. The predominating color was a wonderful red…heavy red velvet curtains shut out all the daylight.” Decorated in luxurious red Oriental silks and up-lit works of art, this room was where White dined his girls with feasts brought in from Delmonico’s. After lunch, Evelyn was invited to follow White upstairs, walking up a murky staircase to where she was ushered into a room of deep forest green. Hanging from the ceiling was a “gorgeous swing with red velvet ropes around which trailed green similax, set high in the ceiling.” In his favorite hideaway, White introduced Evelyn to the pleasures of the red velvet swing, eventually taking her to his bedroom covered in mirrors, where he drugged and raped her. But Evelyn was so taken by the dashing and debaucherous White, they continued to rendezvous at the four-story building at 22 West 24th St. consensually for years.  The legendarily dastardly hedonist would pay for his crimes in 1906, when Evelyn’s then husband Harry K. Thaw gunned White down during a performance in the rooftop theatre of the old Madison Square Garden. The case became known as the “crime of the century” and the media was filled with salacious details of the murder, yet the small, innocuous looking building on West 24th Street was forgotten. It became a low rent hotel, and eventually collapsed in 2007. What happened to the red velvet swing no one knows, or at least no one who’s telling." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Rooms were very clean and cozy, the staff was absolutely fantastic! Location perfect it’s surrounded by amazing restaurants and bakeries as well as it’s not from most of the amazing must see in NYC sights. Will come again!

Came in town on business. Great location, friendly and attentive staff- room has everything you need. A power outlet was broken in my room and the housekeeper and maintenance man acted expeditiously to resolve the matter. Will be returning next time I'm in Midtown.

Hotel Stanford just reopened a month ago. The check in staff are super nice and gave me a $10 voucher to be used at the bakery down the street. My room was comfortable, quiet and clean. I will definitely return.

Google
Great hotel, clean rooms, quiet rooms, excellent staff and a great location in mid Manhattan. Cheaper than the rest of the hotels in area. Very safe for travelers. Thank you for the excellent hospitality.

Google
The hotel terminated all of its loyal employees during covid (understandable) and now hasn't re-hired them since they have re-opened. I don’t support this type of business!

Google
What a wonderful place to stay in Midtown Manhattan. From the quiet rooms to the cleanliness. The staff from Suriya the mrg. To Fahmida, and Ellie. They were all so welcoming and great customer service. Even the doorman was exceptional. Located in Korea Town you must stay at the Stanford Hotel.

Business trip for 4 days. Excellent stay. Highly recommend for central location in midtown.

Yelp
Location is unbeatable for this hotel. The price was very good and the location was amazing and makes getting around so convenient. The metro is right around the corner, you're in the heart of Koreatown, and just a few blocks from Penn station. The room itself is on the smaller side, but I think that's how it is for most Manhattan hotels. Hotel staff is kind, lobby is clean. The room feels a little old and dated, definitely not newly renovated or modern. The shower is super confusing as far as how to get warm water. The water was either full and scalding or room temp but drippy

Yelp
I stayed at Hotel Stanford for a few nights with my mom this past weekend, when we were visiting the city for a mom/daughter weekend. It was fine for a few nights stay. The room was pretty basic but nice enough for a budget stay. Same for the bathroom. Everything about it (room, bathroom, lobby) all feel appropriate for a budget hotel - nothing special, nothing renovated, but not that bad either. My main gripe is a common enough one for NYC hotels - the elevator. As usual, the tiny elevator was out of service, so the only elevator working when we stayed was the service elevator. I probably should have just walked down the stairs from the fifth floor with my bag when I was checking out, because my elevator ride ending up being about 15 minutes (floor by floor with no space for anyone else to get on). Overall, it's a budget hotel. That means budget prices, but it also means it's just an okay place to stay. Three stars just because the location is really convenient. Is it my favorite neighborhood? No. But is it convenient for several different subways stations/lines? Yes. So a budget hotel in a convenient neighborhood? It's a fine place to stay.

Yelp
The lobby is attractive, and they have nice guys working as the doorman. And the front desk staff were almost adequate. The woman who checked me in gave me what would be the worst room in any hotel, though you'd find yourself in the basement of a normal establishment. And realize, there were not many guests AT ALL in the hotel, that was evident. The room I was heartlessly assigned was on the second floor and faced on a wall that was totally dark. In this room it was always night. Which confused my biological clock and kind of disgusted me otherwise. But it was spacious, I'll give it that. But it was SO LACKING, LACKING otherwise: No ice bucket in the room. No ice service in the hall. Front desk says one must go to the 2nd floor bar to get a tiny bucket of ice No coffee service in the room. NO DRINKING GLASSES. Really. I had to make a special request from the front desk for a plastic cup. Now are you getting it? What the front desk will tell you is you can get a plastic cup at the bar on the second floor in the event you intend to indulge in drinking water to survive. Note: The bar is on the second floor, and is unstaffed except at cocktail time, and often closed at times when it is supposed to be open. No grab bars in the shower: and they needed them. It was way too slippery on the stone floors. Anyone could fall. No face cloth. What you do get: At check-in, a young woman of short stature, about thirty, with dark brown hair, who searches the room availabilities for two long minutes, and then gives you a tomb to stay in, where a hotel room should be. A refurbished interior. Unfortunately, this means the place was decorated on the cheap, so the materials used to habilitate the room are from the late 80s. Brown tiles with bronze candelabra over the bathrooms sinks. No need for an alarm clock: the cooing of pigeons will wake you in time to see the sun rise, that's if you get dressed and go outdoors to see what time of day it is. Apparently, pigeons like a place that is dark and always moist. I can't say I do. The staff member you communicated in sign language with at the front desk made a mistaken entry for your ride to the airport. Good thing you checked up on that! The car service they contract with tacks on a $10.00 charge out of nowhere once you get to the airport. The driver said it was a credit card transaction fee. I got no prior notice of this "fee" and how the hell --else-- does anyone pay for things these days? You may bear the likely consequences if you go here after having read this review: If you are capable of getting disgusted and annoyed, though in new and surprising ways, avoid this place.

Thomas B.

Yelp
Clean, good location, plain but usable rooms, good shower BUT undependable Wi-Fi, slow room maintenance and an unworkable tv setup. Lots of international guests which is fun and Korea town is busy.

Chad H.

Yelp
This hotel is not ADA accessible, so I recommend avoiding it if you have a disability. I use a cane and wanted to visit their wine bar after seeing an advertisement in front of the hotel. They apparently have an elevator, but a staff member looked me up and down, informed me it was broken, and then abruptly closed the door and walked away. It was a disappointing experience. Why advertise the wine bar if visitors are not welcome? On a positive note, the Hilton Martinique next door is fully accessible for individuals with disabilities and has a great cocktail bar.

Yelp
Checked in was push back which was late and annoying. The next morning woke up to a burst pipe on ceiling in bathroom and was told getting a new room. Waited for someone to tell us where to go after 2 hrs we had a schd to follow went down to lobby and girl mention we were being moved to 5xx from 7xx asked if we were packed said yes but we had to leave. Came back 2 hrs later and they mentioned the room wasn't ready at this time we had to leave again and wasn't going to be back until midnight. It was just annoying not like we were new arriving customers waiting on a new room. TV in both rooms didn't work. The air was hot felt like it wasn't working as well. Would not recommend even though it was a good location.

Yelp
Part of the hotel in K-town, the lobby seemed to be a comfy space to grab coffee, tea and nibbles up until 4 p.m. after which it transforms to full bar. I was in the area last week and the signage outside listing their specials drew me in. London Fog Latte! Why not. For a medium size at about 5 bucks, the latte was made with Earl Grey tea--delicious and frothy. For those Whiskey connoisseurs, they're meant to have a decent selection. I would return for tea/coffee and a catch up with friends if in the area. The people were super nice and the space was welcoming.

Yelp
Hotel room was 2/5, since there were no wall plug and the AC was extremly weak. I checked out a couple of days ago, and the staff were not friendly enough, felt like they were bored half the time and wanted to finish work. Bathroom was too small and pillows were not comfortable

Susan O.

Yelp
The hotel reopened last month. I stayed there for a few days over Memorial Day weekend and had a great experience. My room was comfortable, quiet and roomy with a great bathroom. The desk is fully staffed and has a concierge at the door. Coffee is available 24 hours per day and they give you a $10 voucher to be used at the bakery next door. I will definitely stay there again.

Yelp
What a surprise this place was, tucked away in Ktown! With a classy interior design, this place is definitely a great classy spot for friends or for a romantic date. There's quite a bit of seating available. The staff was friendly. The drinks were good. I would definitely recommend this place if you're looking for an intimate and classy date night or friends night out in Ktown.

Petro S.

Yelp
Wish I could give less, booked a room, and confirmed the stay, and when I got there late at night, it was boarded up and closed. Absolutely terrible. Going to work with the bank now to get my money back -1 star.

Yelp
This hidden gem in korea town usually goes overlooked because you're trying to get to one of the Karaoke bars, but you stumbled on this review, so you get the inside scoop. 1000% classier than other ktown establishments. Great music, neat finger foods, and cool drinks. :)

Yelp
Decent hotel. The location and staff were great. Its literally right in the middle of ktown! The rooms were pretty clean and the bed was comfortable. However the toilet was being weird sometimes (I counted twice when this happened), but it would kind of gurgle on its own when it wasn't even being used. Also, if you're the type of person who needs it to be completely dark when you sleep, you won't exactly get that here. The room door allows light to creep in from the outside hallway. I personally didn't mind too much!

Yelp
We checked into this hotel and had a great initial impression. The staff were all friendly and professional throughout our stay. The room is spacious (2 queens and a sofa in a separate room.) There are a number of little things that the hotel can improve on very quickly: -Too few electrical plugs, and many are loose, rendering them useless in charging your devices. -The shower door has a gap at the base where there should be a gasket, allowing water to flow across the floor. -Opened up the pull out sofa to find a disgusting mess of hair, dirt and ground in ashes on the very tired looking mattress. Totally gross. -The HVAC is controlled by analog dials that are placebos - they do nothing. In fact, the AC works great at night (too great) and doesn't work during the day, when you need it. I woke up with sore throats each morning. Couldn't raise the temp at night or lower it during the day. Time to digitize folks! -Toilet didn't flush. Turns out that it had been set to water economy mode, giving it too little water to actually flush properly. Fixed in 5 minutes. There are also a few things that are difficult to fix: -Single elevator that is very slow. Add another 20-30 minutes to your schedule during rush hour unless you are cool with the single staircase. -The smell outside of the hotel on the street smells like a frat house on Sunday morning. Only a heavy rain or high pressure hose could resolve it. We had neither during our stay.

Yelp
We stayed here for 5 nights while in New York. I have been to New York a handful of times prior and thought this hotel was comparable to others that I stayed in. My friends who were from Europe, also stayed here were a little shocked about the room size and the breakfast options. I however knew that the size is very typical to New York. You should be aware it is small, but everything at this price will be. We felt safe in the hotel. Our room had two locks on the door. There were a number of employees to greet you at the door and the small reception area. Every employee was friendly and answered our questions when we had them. Since it is in Koreatown you'll find lots of Korean options on the block, but can find anything else you desire just a short walk a block or two. The hotel's location is really great! It is near Penn Station which makes it simple to transfer on the NJ Transit to the airport. We flew into LGA and hired a car for $30 one way to the hotel. This hotel is off of the main streets - 6th Avenue and is an easy walk to Empire State Building around the corner. Time Square was about a 20 minute walk. This hotel was quieter than the hotel's I have stayed in that are closer to time square. Less honking and ambulance sirens throughout the night, although I did wake up for some! I would stay here again because of the location and the price.

Yelp
Avoid this hotel and also be very cautious about Expedia star ratings! This can only be described as a "fleabag" hotel! I travel extensively and I don't always stay in classy accommodations, but this place is just awful and I sat in the room for 5 to 10 minutes before deciding that I just could not stomach staying there. The desk clerk was nice but informed me that there was nothing they could do, the manager was not available to speak with. The reviews placed this hotel at 3.6 out of 5, which also boggles my mind, but I should have read them since the bad reviews were truly bad. The pictures of the hotel and rooms are totally phony which Expedia is looking into. Footnote here is that I love Expedia and will continue to use them, I consider this an aberration since they are a very reliable service.

Yelp
I usually stay at another hotel when I visit NYC but it was closed for renovations so decided to try The Stanford....The location is awesome being next to Greeley Sq and a 2 minute walk to Herald Sq and all its shops ( Macy's, H&M etc) It is also right in the middle of Koreatown and all its restaurants and bars. This being the case you don't hear the outside noise in the rooms. The subway station is also within 3 minutes walk. We stayed on the Raddison hotel side and only heard about 30 mins of work being done at about 9am. Being that your in NYC and the police sirens etc are constant so a little construction noise is nothing! We stayed 11 nights and the room (twin) was very large especially for in this city. The room was clean and has individually controlled air/heat which worked fine for our stay. The free breakfast gets very busy but you can take it back to your room if you choose too. There are bagels, pastries, yoghurt, cereal and fresh fruit available with tea and coffee too. Nice and fresh and is currently split between times and is in cafe before 8am and then in lounge area until 10am. There is also a nice lounge area with free tea and coffee until 4pm, no in room tea and coffee though but the room has a fridge. The staff were amazing and so friendly. I would recommend this hotel and will stay here again.

Yelp
Stay away from this place at all costs!! I booked a room here thru Agoda, and someone in Bangcock was able to get my name and book a second room on my card. Upon checking in, I was informed of this, the front desk clerk acknowledged the addresses of the reservations did not match up, but since the booking was non refundable, there was nothing they could do. I contacted Booking.com, who acknowledged to the hotel the booking from Bancock was probably fraudulent, and the hotel STILL would not refund the money for the second room!! I called the reservation manager the next day, and she implied I was making the whole thing up. I would not be surprised if they are in on the scam. Upon checking into an otherwise decent room, there were used soap bars in the bathroom and shower that were not removed on cleaning. You have been warned.

Yelp
My daughter and I stayed here on our girls trip to NYC(12/14-12/18). The location was great!!! Just steps from the subway which was fabulous. We could be almost anywhere in the city quickly because of the location. Where this hotel doesnt have all of the bells and whistles as a more expensive place, it had everything we needed for a long weekend. The complementary breakfast is exactly what you would expect from a hotel breakfast. Bagels, croissants, muffins, cereal, fruit and yogurt, but the selection is diverse and it is plentiful. If you just want a quick easy dinner, the Sake Bar has a great selection of sushi, sashimi, noodle and rice bowls, which we tried 1 of each and really enjoyed it!! The only reason I gave it 4stars instead of 5 was the heat!!! We had to keep the window in our room cracked, because even with the heater off, the room stayed hot!! Don't let the chipping paint fool you, the staff is super friendly and very accommodating, already looking forward to another trip to stay here!!
google avatar

Lucia C.

Yelp
Sake heaven! Lots of different choices and a great vibe. They serve food here as well so I am looking forward to trying that soon.

Frank P.

Yelp
Noise outside is s killer. Heart of Koreatown and sounds like Korean New Year. Nice king room with big bathroom but if you can't sleep it don't matter. It was over 5 floors up as well I checked out on a Saturday and as of following Sunday no sign of credit hold being returned. Have called twice. Rip off artists!

Yelp
I am some sort of "hotel-snub" and here is why: I was a flight attendant for 15 years staying in the best and worst of some hotels in countries all around the world (I could write a book about hotels... from bed bugs to suites and from 0 starts to 5 stars hotels). My experience has given me a quite range of knowledge about the industry... Now with my credibility built up, here is what I think of the Hotel Stamford. Location: Excellent! Steps away from great locations in Manhattan such as Koreantown, Empire State, Penn Station, Manhattan Mall and many others, this is for the people that do not care about rooms and do care, mostly, about location. Lobby: Cold (feeling, not temperature-wise), with a very small check-in desk, old and dated counters, furniture and an elevator that looks that it should be in an antique museum. Light is very bright-white business like and I feel like I am walking into an office building more than a hotel. I guess you can claim that it adds "feeling" to the hotel... yeah, right... Amenities: The hotel offers free wireless in the lounge floor only between the early morning hours until 3 pm. After hours, the guest must pay... what? That is the biggest oxymoron I've heard in a long time. Why charge for only a few hours of the night? There is a couple of computers in the "business center" but, after I heard stories of identities being stolen from public computers I do not like to use any of them. (This is not a lie or urban legend story... one of my friends used a computer in the business center at a very reputable hotel in LAX and, 24 hours later, the credit card she used to pay for the charges was hacked and thousands of dollars of online purchases were charged to her credit card). Rooms: All I have to say is... "YUK". Here is why: The decor/color is 60's green with super white bright lights, old phones and televisions. Furniture was chipping away, and the room just felt as cold as the lobby. The bed spread/cover is very old. I immediately take it off the bed as they are the ones to harbor bacteria and the nasty stuff you can only find with a blue light. The bed was very old and could feel the metal springs on my back and was concerned if one of them will come through the fabric and 'poke' me in the back. In addition, the curtains were made of the same material as the bed spread. The television channel selection sucked with only a handful of local channels and a few international. The only positive thing I have to say about the room is that it has a refrigerator. In other higher quality hotels, a refrigerator is a 'luxury' item with some even adding an additional $30 or more dollars to the bill when asking for one. The ultimate cleaning test I do is to wear clean white socks and see how they end up at the end of the evening while walking around. Lets say that in a mater of minutes, my white socks were black. I wonder when it was the last time this hotel's carpets where shampooed and properly cleaned. Bathroom: The basics are given such as shampoo, lotion and soap. Water pressure was good and towels ok but, again, old and a better cleaning detergent could have been used. Hairdryer did its job but was very loud. Everything else worked fine. Wake-up call: worked fine but not even a voice at the other end. Most hotels will have either a recording or live person give you the time and weather conditions but not here... just silence. Service: I only had contact with the Front Desk Staff and they seemed to be professional but, along with the ambiance of the hotel, cold and serious. Overall Experience: Great location but in service, decor, amenities and cleanliness, Hotel Stamford failed completely. Hotel Stamford is in need of major renovations and up-keeping. Better hotels for equal price in the area are available where it can be more comfortable to stay at.

Patricia K.

Yelp
Nothing close to being called a hotel, motel maybe.. A place still has blankets instead of duvet and not very clean ones. A door has a safety chain! But thank got we had it as somebody opened our door 8:30 in the morning. Radisson next door is doing a remodeling so you'll be getting a lot of noise as early as 9am. You might get a wall/window of the other building in your windows an arm away. If none of these bother you then start as it's right next to Madison garden, great location.
google avatar

Rachel A.

Yelp
Location. Location. Location. Hotel Stanford is one block away from Macys, the Javits Center, Penn Station, Madison Square Garden, Daffys, and the Manhattan Mall. Right smack in K-Town and in the heart of Midtown, I couldn't think of a better location. If you get too claustrophobic from all the shoppers and business people roaming the streets, hop on the subway to greener pastures (Central Park), downtown (stroll through Greenwich Village), escape to the other boroughs, or jump on the PATH train and take a wild ride to Jersey. Hungry? There's an asian bakery in the lobby, free continental breakfast (cereal and spicy ramen!!!) every morning, and if you feel the need to feed the beast at 2 AM, go for some bi bim bap and jap chae next door! The rooms are small but decent sized for a value priced hotel in Manhattan. Plus they have private bathrooms. I had no problem with my room (it was Euro-ish with two twin sized beds). My friend's room was a little larger but their's came with a hissing cockroach only to be combatted by the hotel personnel holding a can of Raid and fright in their eyes. Oh well. It's not a visit to NYC unless you run into some ghastly bugs or vermin.
google avatar

Todd F.

Yelp
It's cheap for reason. Not worth whatever you paid on Priceline. I'm in midtown every week but my flight was canceled so I had to find a place to stay fast. This place was cheap but that's all.
google avatar

Ryan W.

Yelp
The rooms were small and dirty. They didn't have room service or at least never answered when we called the front desk. This is the worst hotel I have stay at in New York City. Avoid at all costs. I have never felt so ripped off from a hotel experience. I will not be coming back and I definately do not reccommend this place at all.
google avatar

Yelp
Clean, quiet, safe, comfortable, gracious And did I mention economical? This place is a bargain. There are people reviewing who give it a less than perfect score. Didn't see that at all. OK, the continental breakfast is not haute cuisine. But honestly, they gave me caffeine and a bagel. Started the day. Just look at the address: W32nd between 5th and 6th in midtown. Literally 30 feet from a subway station, so you can get anywhere. Koreatown area w/24-hour restaurants, so the street always feels busy and (to me) safe even at night. Our queen-sized room was super clean, quiet, and comfortable. Flat screen TV in the room, adjustable thermostat, shampoo and soap provided were from Bath & Body Works. Cool! Bonuses? Super nice staff. Very gracious, welcoming and accommodating. Bell staff kept our bags prior to check in, and after check out the next day, so we were free to roam around the city without lugging all of our stuff. We returned to the hotel - after checkout - and were still able to make use of the business center and 2nd floor lounge, which is as really nice touch. Coffee, tea, water, cookies and a comfy place to sit from 8-4 each day. Then you walk 1-1/2 blocks to Penn and get on the train. Really, it's perfect. I will absolutely be back.

Yelp
I have been waiting and waiting for a decent bar to open up in K town. I despise karaoke and have been utterly unimpressed by all of the over priced joints that all look and feel the same in the area. Stanford's is conveniently located next to the subway and is classy without being stuffy. The place was completely empty on a Saturday night when a group of friends and I popped in. We wound up sharing a bottle of sake that was served beautifully on ice. The food looked interesting but we were waiting for our names to be called at Wonjo and had some time to kill. If you are in the area and need a drink, this spot is definitely worth your while.

Yelp
Labor Day weekend experience: Cost: Paid $179/night plus taxes and fees and stayed Saturday to Monday. Was the most affordable stay on a holiday weekend. Location: PRIME. In Korea Town at Herald Square with plenty of shopping and a few feet from the subway. Front Desk: Night staff consisted of two ladies who were very friendly and helpful. Morning staff included two gentlemen, one Asian and the other White. The white man was not very personable and never smiled. The Asian man seemed to care a bit more, but was a bit rude when I returned from shopping and asked him if there was still complimentary coffee in the lounge. He had a tone when he asked me if I was a guest at the hotel. Complimentary Breakfast and coffee/tea: Breakfast is 7 am-10 pm and it gets PACKED. Everything they served came out of a bag, which is such a shame, considering you'll be in food central. I mean, yes, it's free, but eating the hotel's breakfast is just wasting stomach space. Walk out to the next block or to the first bagel shop you see, and enjoy that New York dough! Coffee and tea is offered in the wine lounge from 10 am-2 pm. They don't have non dairy creamer or half and half. Only milk for your coffee. And the only tea offered was from a black tea bag. Room: With two twins. The size was decent for a boutique hotel. The beds were nicely made with clean sheets. However, the bathroom was dirty and dusty. There were stains on the toilet that I wiped off. It was gross and I'm glad I brought my slippers. Business Center: hours are 7 am-11 pm. Super slow computers with outdated softwares. I asked if they would be able to enter in the admin password to update some of the programs and apparently, it's impossible. Okay then.... Gym: None Decent stay for the location, but if I could afford somewhere better, I wouldn't stay here again.

Yelp
I brought my Mom on a trip to NYC in June 2008. I love staying in Midtown. I find it makes all my favorite Manhattan sites very accessible. The location is the selling point. It is close to the Empire State Building, Penn Station and the subway. The rooms are small. We had to play a bit of luggage jenga to walk around the room comfortably. The beds are very comfy and the shower was great! We had no view, just a fire escape. Ha! I could not hear the bustle of the city which was nice. The free breakfast is nothing to write home about. I'd rather eat in all the great restaurants that are available to me in Manhattan anyway. There is only one elevator as this is a smaller boutique hotel. So you may have to wait a minute for it at peek times (breakfast). If you are on a budget then I would highly recommend it.

Yelp
Pros: The beds were extremely comfortable and the hotel is in a prime location between the Empire State Building and Madison Square Garden/Penn Station Cons: the street is filled with bright LED signs, the light of which bleed through the blackout curtains. The lounge area is too small to accommodate more than a few guests at a time, causing lines in the morning for the breakfast buffet. The check-in process took about 1.5 hours.

Yelp
What can I say. For the price a very nice hotel ideal location. Rooms cleaned everyday. We stayed in room 801. Put you head around the window full view of Empire State. Very close to subway station. Staff very friendly and bed nice and comfortable. Not noisey in our room slept quite well. Breakfast I will say as it's free can't complain but can see how it would be a problem if hotel was operation in peak season with seating. Free safe and fridge and modern LCD tv with a good variety of channels. Lift was slow but why the rush your on holiday. Would defiantly rebook if room is available when we go next year. Just don't be scared off of bad comments. Are people wanting a lot from a cheap hotel you can't have the best of both worlds.

Yelp
Everything you associate with divey hotels, the Hotel Stanford has. Thin, small bath towels, ripped & burned furniture & carpets, 1st generation touch-tone phones, no desk/desk chair, hideous grandparents-style furniture, dirty & peeling wallpaper, no water pressure, fluctuating water temps in the shower, uncomfortable bed, no AC in rooms, bad lighting, 1 elevator serving 12 floors = 10 minute waits every time you need to go out or come in. The continental breakfast is very modest; bagels & doughnuts, coffee & OJ. Not allowed to take the food to your room in case you have to work, heaven forbid. The few pros include large-ish rooms, surprisingly nice, spacious bathrooms and an duvet on the bed. The location is also decent for sightseers; centrally located in the City. The only reason to stay here would be if you were a tourist on a budget and if this were a great deal. Would not stay here again and am appalled at the price.

Yelp
I agree with Latrice W.... "great location and great price." I'd come back again if i ever go to NY again.

Yelp
The toilet was broken (would not flush) when we arrived but the staff fixed it very quickly. The room was also horribly hot upon arrival. It took the staff a few tries to fix the problem but they did fix it. The room was clean and the staff was very nice. The wine bar on the second floor is a secret treasure. Well worth checking out if you're in that area looking for a unique bar.

Yelp
The review is for the bar upstaris. Had a few rounds of drinks with ex-coworkers here on a Fridday night. Nothing exceptional about the lounge. Decent atmosphere - nothing too dark so quite good for a casual drink meetup and same time for maybe a date meetup. Equivalent Manhattan cocktail prices.

Yelp
This hotel is not the worse hotel that I have stayed in but it's definitely not the best. The hotel is in Korea Town and is ran 95% by Koreans. Pros: The staff is superb. They are extremely accommodating. When you ask for something you will receive it in 5 minutes or less. Cons: the hotels is in desperate need of maintenance. There is only 1 elevator that is small and slow. The rooms are drab and the floors creak badly. We stayed in May and the hotel had no heat because they turned it off. I didn't know this so the first night we froze waiting on the heat to kick in. They offered a space heater after I asked about the heat. The bathrooms need recaulking. The breakfast they claim to provide consists of Bagles, fruit, cereal and juice. They don't allow you to take the food to your room. Lastly the noise is horrific at night. Firetrucks, ambulances, and people screaming all night. We stayed in the 6th floor but felt like I was on floor 1.

Yelp
We chose the Stanford Hotel for our stay in New York for its centrality (in fact it is very close to Empire State Bldg and numerous restaurants of all kinds) and for its attractive rates that also include a nice breakfast with a wide choice including excellent yogurt. The staff is friendly and helpful. The room was comfortable, quiet and clean. It is also next to the Macy's department stores and the beautiful Bryant Park, which in this pre-Christmas period offers a fabulous atmosphere with the ice rink and kiosks.

Yelp
this is a 1/2 star review! poor customer service and poor refund policy!! if you book through the bookings website, rest be assured that you will be charged for the first night of your booking even if you do nt stay. when you contact the hotel, kyla (supposedly some manager) does not help much! they have my money for no reason and that is not fair. not to mention i was overcharged $66, where i was only refunded $62.

Yelp
Plus: -Friendly staff -Nice room. -Free WiFi -Free breakfast buffet (though a very small small one, but hey, i'ts free). -The size of the fridge made it quite usefull. Minus: -It was ver hard to get the right temperature in the sink or the shower. You either got burning hot or cold. -The beam in the shower was a joke. You either got a rifle shot of a beam or you broke the beam with the nozzle to get a somewhat, more evenly distributed beam. It wasn't pleasent to take a shower. If I ever come back to NY, I might visit it again.

Yelp
I traveled with three of my friends. With prices in Manhattan $300 or above for a room with two beds and many hotels not able to accomadate roll away beds....it is hard to travel with a bunch of guys with sharing a bed. For $417 a night...we got the executive suite. There is a couch for smaller people that can sleep. You can easily fit two roll away beds near the windows and the two nice size beds in the bedroom area. It will be cramped but you are basically sleeping 5 if all want individual beds. The bathroom is ok...the carpet looks like it could use updating...but the location is on 32nd and Broadway. It will take you awhile to get there if traveling by cab cause of the traffic...but once there...many things are in walking distance and the subway is right next door. You are in the heart of Ktown..Penn Station is two blocks away. For the price and what we needed it for...perfect! Oh the hallways are small. One elevator that will be a wait. But if you have lower floors take the stairs.

Yelp
Only good thing about this hotel is its location in ktown. Other than that everything else sucks. The wifi, room service, rooms, and everything else just sucks. Don't get tricked by this hotel giving free breakfast. It's just bagels and yogurt from the 99 cent store and not worth eating.

Yelp
If you want a room to sleep in, in a convenient location, this is the place to go. Nothing special but it does the trick. Only complaint worth noting was the occasional cigarette smell that wafted through the air vents. The morning after our first night, two different employees, on separate occasions, knocked on the door asking to enter our room to inspect the odor, which was awkward to say the least. Besides that, my boyfriend and I had a fairly comfortable stay at this hotel.

Yelp
Stayed for a few days in late April, 2012, extended my business trip. Right is the heart of Midtown right by the Garden/Herald Square. Very easy to get to uptown or downtown. The room is clean, but small (perfect for a couple of people with room to spare. The bathroom was very clean. The staff is very friendly, lots of international travelers. This is not the 4 season, but a solid hotel with good midtown pricing. I paid $575 for a queen size bed from Thurs to Sat, check out Sunday. This is a hidden gem!

Yelp
There are a lot of things to like about Hotel Stanford. The location is very close to a subway, there's free breakfast and wifi. The room was well stocked with a pitcher of water in the mini fridge, a safe in the closet, all the bathroom supplies you'd expect. But a hotel should focus on physical comfort, and that was an area in need of improvement. The room was too hot when we walked in, and when I set the thermostat to "cool" and auto-fan, it seemed to be blowing more hot air. I shouldn't have to sleep half naked in late January. The bed was way too firm and squeaky, though that didn't affect my SO since she can sleep anywhere. Our room had a lovely view of an alleyway and no window screens. I can say it was a quiet and dark room (good blackout curtain) so that was better than some places I've stayed in nyc, but the bed was just not comfortable at all.
