Hotel Stari Grad | Best places to stay in Dubrovnik

"One of only a handful of hotels situated inside Dubrovnik’s medieval walls, the big draw here is that everything is within walking distance – from the Rector’s Palace and Gundulic market, to the cable car up to Mount Srd. The other x-factor is the open-air, rooftop restaurant, which gives panoramic views over the city’s patchwork of terracotta roofs. Below, the eight rooms have a chic, boutique-style feel, although some are a touch on the small side – inevitable in such an old building. There’s a small spa, offering Thai massage for post-sightseeing pampering, and a ground floor whisky bar, but most guests settle in at the rooftop for sunset drinks. The restaurant has an inventive menu of locally-sourced produce – the lamb with sweet potato and swordfish with hummus are both excellent. " - Jane Foster

We loved everything about this hotel! The location in the Old Town is perfect and the rooms (we had the rooftop suite) are really spacious, beautiful and comfortable. They offer a private driver for airport pickup which includes delivery of luggage to your room, which worked really well for us. The staff is super nice and friendly. We had dinner at Above 5 Rooftop restaurant and it was fantastic (both the service and the food)! We would definitely stay here again and recommend it to others!

Upon arriving in Croatia we spent 3 nights at the Hotel Stari Grand. This is a boutique hotel inside Old Town Dubrovnik. We had a lovely junior suite which was well appointed and very spacious. The hotel is centrally located and easy walking distance from all major attractions and restaurants. The staff couldn’t have more accommodating, whether recommending restaurants or helping with luggage. ||Breakfast was served everyone morning at Above 5, a delightful rooftop restaurant. Our server, Phyo, was wonderful, greeting us with a smile every morning. ||If you are looking to stay in Old Town Dubrovnik I would highly recommend the Hotel Stari Grand.

Fantastic small boutique hotel. The staff is awesome. The roof top restaurant is outstanding and served us the best meal we had after 3 weeks in Europe. It is an amazing view while you eat. BUT, you need to understand it is inside the old city walls. So you can't drive to the front door. You have to walk a couple hundred meters through the old city gate. Not a big deal unless you have lots of heavy luggage. Also because the old city is a UNESCO site, there is no elevator. But the staff will carry your bags up to your room. There is also a great Thai massage across the street that is owned by the hotel.

.We spent a night here recently and it was a fabulous experience. The room was clean and had all you need for a comfortable stay. The hotel staff were exceptional in all aspects including meeting us outside the Old Town to bring in our luggage and take it 4 floors up to our room. |The highlight was the Above 5 restaurant on the rooftop. We have never had a better dining experience, the food was superb and the view at sunset was amazing. Perched basically on top of the Old Town , it is an experience of a lifetime

We really enjoyed the location in the old city. Our room was small, but totally fine for two nights. It was clean and comfortable. We were thankful our room was only one flight up. As there are many rooms that require a lot of steps to get to. The breakfast was pricey, but very good And the staff at the restaurant great. Staff accidentally walked into our room at six in the morning, which was very annoying and also a little disturbing.

A lovely hotel, but be aware! It advertised "valet parking". This was perfect as we were traveling with my sister and brother-in-law, who are both in there 70's and don't walk so well. Our reservation contract allows to cancel 7 days in advance. 6 days before our arrival the hotel informed us the the city would no longer allow private vehicles in the Old Town. So now we had to park at the Hilton Imperial and luggage our suitcases to the hotel from there. Not fun with SO many people in Dubrovnik. As for breakfast on the roof, the view is spectacular and very unique, service was excellent, but $150.00 for 2 bowls of yogurt with fruit, 1 avocado toast and 3 coffees seems extreme. Highly recommend the Hilton Imperial, good parking.

We were placed in the building opposite the building of the lobby in a deluxe type room.|The room itself looks less pretty than the pictures.|It has a window that faces the wall and is very close to it, which causes a feeling of closure instead of airiness and space ( I have stayed in different old towns walls areas before...)|The worst part is that the shower and toilet area is so small that if you have to open the shower door, you have to open it to the inside because otherwise you get stuck in the toilet.|That area is not at all proportional the the room's size which also is not vast.|We were located on the first floor but on the ground floor there was a massage parlor that sometimes changed its purpose to a yoga parlor that included the stairs.|That did not conribute to a luxury feel that the hotel was supposed to create.|The pros are pros with a BUT:|location very good BUT there are places to stay out of the walls which seemed more interesting and spacious, don't fall into "the walls" thing...|Secondly, the view from the restaurant on the roof is amazing (haven't tried the food) BUT it is very hard to get there because of the steep staires which won't be easy for anyone to climb.

Hotels kinda start out with four stars and go up or down from there.||How did I dislike this hotel? Let me count the ways.||First, the room is small. I get it that we’re in a hotel in the old city, but small is small. The bathroom is small too. Not terrible, but small. But no deduction.||Second, THERE ARE NO PLUGS AT THE DESK. This is totally unacceptable. There’s a plug three or four feet away. Luckily, I travel with a triple tap and a plug that allows me to charge multiple devices at once. I still had to move devices in and out. This lack of plugs is an automatic deduction of one full star. No usable plugs at the nightstands either. You have to unplug a lamp to free up a plug. USB ports? Don’t make me laugh. Internet was decent, however.||Third, the small desk is ¼ filled with a giant coffee maker (using one plug, by the way), but there’s really no place in the room to move it. There’s also a fridge that uses another plug. I was reluctant to unplug either, as the outlet looked weird.||Fourth, the air conditioner only seems to provide cold air. I could not adjust it to a higher temperature. Luckily, I could turn it off. If it provides heat at all, I was unable to adjust it for that purpose. Both the A/C and the bathroom fans took a long time (minutes) to shut off once you threw the switch. I wasn’t quite sure at first what was going on.||Fifth, I asked for a map and was offered a QR code. I don’t much trust QR codes and lived instead with the Apple Map on my phone. Never stayed in a hotel that didn’t have area maps.||Sixth, Breakfast? A fifth-floor walkup. Now to be fair, I knew that steps were required for this hotel, but five floors?||Seventh, it’s a very noisy hotel. Lots of internal noise, lots of external noise from restaurants and the like, and noise EVERYDAY at 6 a.m. from trash pickup. I still get it that we’re in the city, but the soundproofing is totally nonexistent.||Eighth, large decorative pillows on the bed, with no real place to store them. I just hate it that hotels put this dysfunctional crap in room for guests to deal with. Commonplace objection at many hotels.||Ninth, no hooks for hanging things in the bathroom. The only hooks were used by two bathrobes. In the end, I stuck the robes on the floor in a corner to free up the hooks.||Tenth, the shower worked okay, but it took me several minutes to discover that the knob was misadjusted and that you had to ignore the settings on the knob.||Everything wasn’t terrible. The location is fine, to say the least. Breakfast was okay, if you don’t mind the climb. Staff was friendly and helpful. If there was something else positive, I missed it.||I would not stay here again, despite the location. They are just not trying.
