Valdepalacios

"A 90-minute drive from Madrid, the Valdepalacios is the aristocratic country inn the Spanish capital has long needed. From the farmland approach, it doesn’t look like much, but inside the apricot-colored estate walls, the old manor house has been transformed with exquisite taste into a 27-room retreat as deeply comfortable as it is utterly modern. The public areas are warmed by fireplaces and dotted with antiques, and the main house’s first-floor rooms have sleek furnishings, wide-planked floors, and picture windows that have broad views of the countryside. Past the spa, the sunny patio, and the pool are the garden cottages, their airy interiors done up in tasteful chintz. Apartment-size bathrooms have separate tubs and showers and Molton Brown toiletries. It’s like a chic English retreat—except for the restaurant, Tierra, which is overseen by star chef Santi Santamaría (of Barcelona’s Can Fabes), whose olive oil tastings and crisp-skinned pork make it thoroughly, wonderfully Spanish."

"A pleasant, bright restaurant with an elegant decor. The cooking here has a modern hint to it, showcased on an à la carte that champions produce from the property’s own farm and a strong focus on presentation." - Michelin Inspector

We stayed here for one night with a large group during our annual foreign car rally/tour with our clients. Owner Elizabeth was very friendly and professional in the entire organization of our stay. The staff is extremely friendly, the service very professional and the food is fantastic! But above all: the ambiance here is unique! A nice extra: the safari early in the morning! Thank you for your hospitality on behalf of team Prins and our guests!

In my view their pricing is excessive for the quality. They need to have better hotel operational management. Front desk is in shambles, disorganised, clueless and do not really understand professional customer service definitely not people with actual training. We were recommended by friends and family that stayed many years ago - when the property probably saw better days and people lacked options. Maybe we paid more for a bigger room with nice view but still in no ways can justify few nights we paid close to 450 euros a night. It’s a 3 star at most, certainly not of the standard to be called a leading small luxury hotel. The property lacks maintenance with shabby fixes, tacky concrete features and constructions in gardens, both hardware and service lacking attention to detail. Spa neglected inside the pool slime cling to the walls. The best part of the hotel is the grounds the nature (ignoring the outbuilding collecting junk), good also are the restaurant maitre’d, who is very professional / waitstaff who were friendly, and the drive through the finca though a stretch to be called safari. Their food they try hard with presentation, ok definitely not Michelin quality which seems it once had not even bib gourmand, kitchen seems over staffed and stressed - again pricing very expensive for the meagre output, also cocktails almost 20 euros for basic grocery store gin, before VAT. I’m fine to pay that prices at real quality hotels but not for thre standard offered by this place. I am really confused by the high rating they have. It’s ok if the price is 150 euros a night. If I were tourists that came to visit fro overseas I’d be sorely disappointed.

This is just a lovely charming hotel. It is decorated in a tasteful traditional style and very charming. The main building is surrounded with beautiful fragrant walkways ,and peaceful fountains. ||||There are rooms in the main building and scattered around the grounds in lovely cottage style rooms and suites with flat panel TV's and the bathrooms are gorgeous with big showers and tubs. Very tastefully done.||||The food was delicious and we enjoyed coffee and dessert on the terrace near the pool. Breakfasts were very good. The service is excellent throughout the hotel and restaurant. The icing on the cake was the reasonable price for our stay.||||We want to thank all the staff for making our stay special, but especially Jaime Sepulveda, and Jesus. We would definitely stay here again.

In January, we stayed here for 3 nights and I still think of this oasis...sitting in front of one of the several fireplaces in the evenings, reflecting on another beautiful day, and going intonthe spa for even more relaxation. The staff at the hotel are all very warm and welcoming. It is a delight to be there. And the restaurant is excellent, we loved the fine cuisine and adaptation to vegetarisn needs… pasta with truffels for example …we will come back, it is a place seldom found and suited for discerning travellers. The quietness and true luxury stay in my mind and heart. Thank you, amd keep the lemon pie on the desert card forever…

Beautiful place with free bikes and lovely cycling. Fantastic breakfast and helpful staff. Our only issue was that our spa bath was broken so we had to move room to not such a nice room. The staff moved all our clothes when we were out and were genuinely apologetic. We would go back especially in May when all the wild flowers are out and you can see wild boar , herds of deer and lovely birds and butterflies. A very peaceful place. The Michelin restaurant was excellent. The whole experience from the ambiance, service and the food. We would recommend you eat there.

We have just returned from a 3 night stay booked through Secret Escapes and throughly enjoyed our short break. The hotel is situated in the heart of the countryside, so a car is essential. We drove from Madrid airport in just over an hour and a half, the drive is easy, don't be put off at the thought of the journey.||As others have already said, the hotel could do with some renovations but this in no way affected our stay. We had a huge room with a comfortable bed, sitting area, lovely bathroom and air conditioning. There are lovely Molton Brown toiletries in the bathroom and plenty of still and sparkling water in the fridge which is complimentary.||We were at the hotel during the week when the hotel was extremely quiet, so we were treated to having the pool and patio area to ourselves. The staff were unobtrusive but appeared regularly to see if we needed anything, they were all very welcoming and helpful with most speaking a little English and some almost fluent.||The highlight of our stay had to be the Tasting Menu in the Michelin star restaurant. Despite the restaurant being quiet on the evening we dined, we were treated to the full experience with the chefs coming to the table on several occasions to explain about the dish being served.||We also took the opportunity of the local wine tasting which Garcia kindly organised for us which gave the opportunity to taste some delicious local wines.||The breakfast is excellent, plenty of it and freshly cooked to order with first class pastries and coffee too.||In our opinion the lunch is over priced and not worth the money, we had it on the first day, but on subsequent days didn't bother, there was so much to eat at breakfast you don't really need lunch.||Carmen, the General Manager took the time to come and find us to check everything was good with our stay. We cannot single out any of the staff in particular as everyone we met in all departments were helpful and sorted out any minor problems we encountered.||We would certainly recommend the hotel and plan to have another stay next year.

We have just returned having stayed 3 nights, again like some other contributors, as a customer of Secret Escapes. We arrived on a Thursday evening and had the hotel to ourselves with one other English couple. Everything was wonderful, we had an enormous bedroom, staff were so friendly and helpful and almost all had a great level of English.||Yes, the place is probably a bit shabby chic, but I liked that about it and it had no negative impact on the enjoyment of our stay. Had a late check out on Sunday at 6pm which was not a problem. We ate lunch there on the 3 days, probably a bit pricey, but considering the service and location, I could put up with that. ||We also did the 'safari' which was very entertaining. Lots of deer herds on the estate.||Overall, couldn't fault it on any level.

About 2 hours west of Madrid in dry and dusty rugged countryside, one finds this oasis of a hotel. Set among lush and beautiful plantings, this property has extensive acreage of vineyards, farmland, pond, shooting range, and paths to walk on. It has two pools, one indoor and one out. The main house is replete with large sitting rooms furnished with an eclectic mix of tasteful antiques. The rooms are extremely comfortable with fine linens on the beds. The bathrooms are a bit unusual in that they are integrated into the bedroom design. This is a great place to unwind for a few days. We enjoyed getting off the tourist circuit of sites in Madrid and Granada and Córdoba and coming here to relax by the pool. Their associated restaurant, Tierra, is superb.
