Amsterdam's Hotels Won't Waste Your Time

"For a while in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Houthandel van de Vijsel was an unusual Amsterdam landmark, a timber and hardware shop around which had grown an upscale residential neighborhood. For a while it sat vacant, but now, thanks to hotelier Arjen van den Hof and architect Minke Wagenaar, the spirit of the place — and many of its original beams, in fact — lives on as the Hotel van de Vijsel." - Mark Fedeli

The hotel has a beautiful design, but functionality and attention to detail were often missing. My room was generally clean, but there were huge cobwebs in the ceiling corner that hadn’t been cleaned for a long time until I specifically mentioned it. Even after daily cleaning, the carpet still had visible dirt - not a thorough job. While the public areas look great, it seems there are no proper service rooms, so every day and night I had to walk through hallways full of cleaning carts - which completely ruined the atmosphere. Another inconvenience: the lobby door can only be opened from the inside by reception, so I found myself waiting outside several times until someone noticed me or happened to be at the desk - not a welcoming experience. Regarding the room itself, the mattress was far too soft, causing back pain every morning. In the bathroom, there was no countertop near the sink for personal toiletries, the lighting was too dim for shaving or makeup, the toilet paper holder was oddly placed, and there was no shelf in the shower. Towels were always left on the bed (since there was no shelf or proper hanger in the bathroom), so I had to step out wet every day to get one. The room had no sofa or seating area despite having enough space for one, no minibar, and no complimentary bottle of water. Coffee supplies were also mismatched - four capsules but only two sugars and milk powders —-clearly not much thought behind it. Small improvements could make a big difference, but without them, the experience doesn’t justify the price compared to nearby hotels offering better value.

We loved our stay at the Van de Vijsel. A cosy, warm hotel, |The hotel staff were very friendly and helpful. |The breakfast was excellent and presented very well.|The location was perfect for us - close to the Van Gogh museum and Rijksmuseum and Vondelpark. There are some beautiful shops and houses in the Museum Quarter. |The hotel was only 20-30 min walk into the centre of the city. |The room although small (we chose the double comfort) was very comfortable and clean. Shower was great and well stocked with lovely toiletries. |The only downsides were the lighting, the room was very dark and we were only supplied with 6 coat hangers. |We would definitely stay there again. Maybe choose the suite next time.

The staff was absolutely brilliant, especially Mateo, who could not do enough to help. The room was okay (bit of advice a brighter light would help, had to use the torch on the phone to check the cupboard for clothing when packing). Word of warning the hotel bed only comes with one pillow per person, the mattress slopes away where the pillow is, so you end up with almost no pillow, when I asked at reception for another pillow, I was told they do not have anymore pillows, but a large towel was delivered to the room for us to use. The Duvet does not go over the sides like the UK, only fit the bed, when in bed, I found the Duvet doesn’t go to the edge and ended up with a draft, (A/C is you’re friend). The breakfast was substantial, but after four days, scrambled egg was getting a bit tired for my wife. The Hotel offers a honesty box system for drinks out of normal (Breakfast) times. The room is basic, but that is all you need as you do not spend a lot of time in there. Other reviews state that there is nowhere to put the suitcases, but we found that not to be an issue. The bathroom, was great, best hotel shower that we have experienced, the light under the toilet which is on all night is a great idea. I would not hesitate to stay here again if in Amsterdam. The hotel was in the museum quarter good to visit the parks and museums and not that far from the centre (approximately 15 mins walk from the hotel, tram stop around the corner also takes approximately 8 mins to the main train station and approximately 20 mins from the airport).

You can't beat the practicality and comfort! The reception area was comfortable and staffed around-the-clock. We were able to drop off our luggage before our check-in time so that we could explore the city unencumbered! The room, while naturally small, was comfortable and clean. We booked the romantic getaway package which was a fun touch. I wish I had taken a picture of my breakfast - the selection was amazing and beautifully laid out. I especially enjoyed the fresh juice and coffee.

I booked this hotel through Eurostar. Our room was in the basement (not a deal breaker) until you realise that you have to walk through the service part of the hotel to get there. We walked past the kitchen, complete with massive wheelie bin outside, laundry room with racks of both clean and dirty laundry, the staff dining room and staff toilets. I thought we had taken some incorrect route, but no, that was the correct way to get to the room. The room itself was ok, except that it was facing another room around 3m away so if you wanted any privacy you needed to have the curtains drawn at all times. The light above the bed was so fiddly (and came on when I accidentally touched it in the middle of the night) that we were unable to switch it off and someone from reception had to come to our room at 2am to switch it off for us. They couldn't do it either. Finally they managed and said we would be moved to a different room the following day. Unsurprisingly, the following day they said they were fully booked and could not move us. You would have thought the lady at reception the night before would have known that. Do not book this hotel if all you can get is a basement room. They should be for resident staff only and are not fit for purpose as guest rooms. Very disappointing. They did give us free breakfast for one morning which was decent, but not enough to make up for the horrible experience of staying in the hotel.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this hotel. The room was on the small side, but cosy and had everything we needed. May have struggled if we were staying for longer than 3 days (as lack of wardrobe/storage space). The location for us was perfect. Within 10 minutes we were in the very centre of Amsterdam. Everything we wanted to visit, we walked from the hotel and it was easy! Vondelpark is just a couple minutes away! All the staff we encountered were lovely and very helpful. A large TV and fab wifi. The shower was also one of the best hotel showers we've ever used! We hope to stay here again :)||||

we arrived at the hotel 6 hours before our check in and asked the staff if it was possible to leave our bags, the staff couldn't have been more helpful. They even gave us directions to get to the nearest tram stop. When we returned 6 hours later and checked in our bags were in our room.||The room was clean and tidy with a comfortable bed with plenty of pillows and the bath in the bathroom was huge, and there was also a large shower.||Breakfast was buffet style and there was both a hot and continental option. The hot options included a buffet style, sausage, bacon and scrambled eggs or waffles, pancakes and omelettes from the menu, cooked to order. The continental option included, cold meats, cheeses, a selection of breads and pastries, fresh fruit, jams, yoghurts and granola. Fresh fruit juices were available along with tea and coffee.||The hotel is located in a quiet area of the town, close to tram stops which can take you to all areas of the city. There are a number of bars and restaurants within walking distance and also a couple of supermarkets.||The staff were very pleasant and helpful and the reception is manned 24/7.||Would definitely stay again when visiting Amsterdam.

location was really great, walkable to the city but easy transport links to the centre and airport! our room was spacious, we stayed in a twin room and the room was very big so would recommend, and staff all went above and beyond when we ran into issues (beware if you’re in a room on -1 you may have no wifi or service!) but staff did what they could to try and help. hotel feels really safe and secure with a bag drop for when you check out. when revisiting amsterdam we will definitely stay here again. bathrooms could do with an update as slightly dated but very clean so can’t complain!

Yelp
Amazing staff at reception. Hotel is clean, functional and cozy. Heated bathroom floors are a luxury. Location perfect! The beds are comfortable and the rain shower head is great after a day of walking around the city. Breakfast is worth the extra for the package.

Yelp
My wife and I stayed here in June 2023 and found it to be perfect for our needs. The room was roomy and had an attached bathroom with stand up, glassed in shower. There was a safe in the room as well as a one serving coffee maker. The hotel does not offer laundry service, but I say a laundry about a block and a half away. We were greeted by the warm and friendly staff when we stopped in early to see if we could drop our bags and have them store them until our room was ready. We got there about noon and check-in is not until 3pm, but we were informed our room was ready and were immediately checked in. There is a city fee that you have to pay upon check in if you book through priceline or something like that, but it was only fifty euros. The room and hotel was very clean and chic. The location is fantastic and we walked very easily to the palace, Heineken experience, van Gogh and Rijksmuseum. We would definitely stay here again, but opt to find your own breakfast as there is a great pancake place (Pancake club) and brunch place (Teds) about two blocks away.

Yelp
We booked this hotel for 7 nights based on their reviews, 4/5 rating, spent $400 a night only to find BED BUGS in our hotel bed and our blood smeared on the sheets. We took videos of the bugs, photos of the blood and went to show the receptionist and her eyes nearly popped out of her head. When she went to get the manager, he was "in the back," she came back solo saying he was busy. I'm sorry, there is nothing more important than BED BUGS in a hotel. We were in town for the Taylor Swift show so she told us all hotels were booked so she couldnt move us, the only option was downgrade our room to a double bed in the hotel, we booked a suite for 2 friends so we had more space for our luggage. We set up a meeting with the manager, named Phillip but he told Expedia his name was Alexander, for the next morning at 9am, we slept absolutely horribly, itching all over, and worrying we would have bugs in the new room as well. So by 9am we were so upset. When I met the manager, he was not phased by the bed bugs at all, he said its NORMAL and happens all the time and all they could do for us was comp us ONE night. So after some research, bed bugs are NOT NORMAL and the protocol is to high heat dry and wash all of your clothes and throw away luggage. Not only that, the hotel has a history of bed bugs over the last 2 years and the reviews show the hotel completely refunded the guests for the HUGE inconvenience. This hotel absolutely DOES NOT CARE if your room has BED BUGS. After stating all the facts, the manager only offered 2 nights. So I decided to reach out to Expedia/Hotels.com to request their involvement since I booked through them, they told the hotel to refund us, they refused. After 3 hours of sitting in the lobby talking with the manager and online help, they offered 3 nights but I had to LEAVE the hotel and check out. So essentially only a 2 night refund, but all hotels in the area were booked for Taylor Swift, so there was no where to go. The manager was so rude and condescending, he acted like we were the problem as soon as we brought the bed bug issue to them. He refused to even speak to us the first day we brought this up. He recorded every conversation we had on his laptop. Every time I said they could do better, he got nastier. We travel a lot, once bed bugs are mentioned or even whispered, hotels freak out and want to make it up to you as the guest, NOT at Hotel van de Vijsel. They dont care if they give all your clothes and luggage bed bugs or not, they will battle you to the end. I had the absolute worst time due to this Hotel and manager, we DO NOT recommend staying here. We literally had BUG BITES AND BLOOD SMEARED ON OUR SHEETS AND BODIES and they didnt care, they acted like we were the nuisance not the little blood sucking bugs.

Yelp
We ended up here through a series of misadventures and really enjoyed it. The daily breakfast was fresh and the ingredients were fresh. The hotel beds and pillows were great to sleep on. The hotel staff and most significantly Superstar Lisa were off the charts. They were always busy but never so busy that they were too busy to help you. The only negative thing is that all the rooms on my floor looked into an atrium and my neighbors would pull their curtains shut in a hurry when they they saw us lounging on the bed.

Yelp
Solid hotel at a great price! Nice location, very walkable and easy to get to and get around town! Nice room, clean, simple and cozy; nice kitchen where you can take a drink in the social "living room." Friendly and welcoming staff! Def would recommend and nice that we could book using Chase Reward Points!

Yelp
We left our stay at Hotel Van De Vijsel feeling as though the boutique hotel was mediocre and overpriced. The positives from this stay is that we were looking for a hotel outside of the main tourist area, which we found. The not-so-positives were that the staff were luke-warm, the room was ridiculously small and not well lit at all. The wood finishes in the room does not help the hibernation vibe going on in the room. Also, the Nespresso coffee machine did not work properly in the room. The machine sputtered a bit and spat out some watered down coffee. In addition, the room was not cleaned by the staff during out stay. The staff simply left towels on our bed. I reported this to the manager during our checkout and received "oh, im sorry about that". Well, alright then... I would not stay at this hotel again, nor would I recommend the hotel to others.

Yelp
The room is very small but comfortable and the shower is great. Unfortunately it that doesn't make up for the unwelcoming personnel that never greets you even when you're checking in, but instead just stare at you with an attitude. Another downside there's no place to get a drink at night but outside. Since the cafe closes in the afternoon, there are no mini fridge in the room and no vending machines, you'll have to go out or order to be delivered. Also the WiFi is very slow and there are nothing interesting to see on tv if you decided to stay in. Don't bother to have breakfast in the hotel because it's definitely not worth it.

Yelp
I'm overdue for a review for this hotel! My partner and I came to Amsterdam in November for a short holiday, and stayed at this fantastic hotel. Little did we know, this hotel had only opened 10 or so days prior to our arrival, so we were the first to stay in our room! This hotel is very cute - I loved the rough, wood decor - it gave the room a very warm feeling. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful, and the location of this hotel is perfect - it's adjacent to the Leidseplein, so just a short walk to central Amsterdam, as well as the less-touristy area of Amsterdam West. I really think it's perfectly located for someone coming to Amsterdam to visit. Next time I'm in the area, I'd love to stay here again.

Yelp
They are a greedy hotel and don't care about the safety and well being of their occupants. Was supposed to stay here 4/18-4/21 and had to cancel because of covid-19. I didn't ask for a refund just a credit to use when the pandemic is over because Amsterdam is my favorite city in the world and I will definitely be back as soon as I can. (Also by the way the airlines gave me a refund instead of a credit because my flight was canceled and they won't have any other flights to there for the time being. I would've completely be okay with a credit as I understand it's tough on any business to lose money) after several times of reaching out to them they still refused to work with me and essentially took $1000 from me. The fact that they do not care about anyone while we are in a global pandemic is disgusting
