"For a while in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Houthandel van de Vijsel was an unusual Amsterdam landmark, a timber and hardware shop around which had grown an upscale residential neighborhood. For a while it sat vacant, but now, thanks to hotelier Arjen van den Hof and architect Minke Wagenaar, the spirit of the place — and many of its original beams, in fact — lives on as the Hotel van de Vijsel." - Mark Fedeli

I would give this hotel a zero if it was possible. I stayed at this hotel the first week of July 2024. Me and my friend booked the suite. By day 4 we realized there were bed bugs. Both of us had bites, there was blood on the sheets in multiple locations, and we took video of the actual bed begs. We showed the hotel staff, and the manager was very rude and did not want to refund or accommodate us. Luckily, we could switch rooms, but they would not refund us the difference in cost from the suite to the new room, and to get a partial refund of 3 nights out of the 7 nights for having to deal with bed bugs, we were required to leave the hotel. Given that this was the week the Eras tour was in town, it was incredibly difficult to find a new hotel. Luckily, we booked through booking.com, which helped us find a new location (but it was by the airport, far from the city center and inconvenient) and gave us a credit to pay for this serious inconvenience. Disinfecting your clothes and luggage after exposure to bed bugs is very time-consuming, and some items like luggage must be deep cleaned or trashed. I’ve traveled worldwide and was shocked by the lack of customer service or compensation for bed bugs, considering this is a 4-star hotel, and we paid close to $400 a night (with taxes/fees). I would avoid this hotel and book somewhere else that takes incidents like this more seriously or use a 3rd party vendor that can advocate on your behalf when the hotel tries to screw you over.

We really enjoyed our stay here. The room was a bit small, but that's to be expected in Europe. We loved the shower which had double shower heads. When we first got into our room, we called to the reception desk to ask for extra pillows and towels. Someone delivered those immediately. ||The staff was very helpful in navigation. If they didn't know where something was, they looked it up and had us take screen shots of the information. The Tram was right across the street or just around the corner depending on which line you needed. We took public transportation everywhere. The neighborhood is very walkable also. ||The only downside was the breakfast. We paid for it on the first morning but decided that it didn't offer enough for the amount they charge. The food was fine, but it was small and didn't have a lot of variety. ||We would definitely recommend this hotel and stay there again if in the area.

Overprice standard room stay with an average breakfast. The first night I realized the bed light wouldnt switch off - so that nights sleep was a right off. Reported it 10am the next morning after breakfast, still not fixed by the second night - I had to re report it. The bed was comfortable.

A Great boutique hotel about 40 minutes walk from the central station. The staff were great and the rooms comfortable, the beds and towels changed daily, safe and TV in the room, although the TV signal was a little weak for some channels . The breakfast was amazing! A choice of meats and cheese, pastries, yoghurt etc as well as hit options of eggs, bacon, pancakes and waffles, most things you could want. We had a great stay.

Great location for walking around Amsterdam and easy connections with the airport. Our flight arrived fairly early in the morning and they were able to let us check-in much earlier than stated (10am). The room was small but very comfortable and had air-con which was a good bonus as the weather was pretty warm over the weekend.

Very well located, next to multiple public transport options. The room was nice but a little small. The bathroom was also small but the shower was spacious. Nice breakfast and helpful staff

This hotel was a god send. We had an Airbnb booked which turned out to be considerably below expectations, so a bit of googling identified this hotel. We walked over there and sorted a room very quickly with the friendly and helpful staff. Got chatting to the manager at the same time (Phil I think) who was so lovely and understanding. He threw in complimentary breakfast! That level of service is rare. Can’t recommend this hotel highly enough

Hotel is in a great location and the reception staff are super helpful, but sadly, that's the last good thing I have to say about my stay. The room was so tiny, it was barely possible to walk along the side of the bed and for context, I'm 170cm and 74Kg. The carpets in the room were damp underfoot. When i mentioned this to the staff, I was told that it MAY have been due to cleaning, however, this was never confirmed, so I still have no idea if it was through leaks or cleaning. After leaving the hotel, I sent a message regarding an item that I'd left in the room, but never received a response. I have no idea if the the other rooms are different, but again, as a solo traveller, feel that we get a very raw deal when staying in hotels, and this was a particularly bad one.
