3 Days in the Costa Brava

"One of the most luxurious hotels on the Costa Brava, perched on a cliff at the northern end of the bay of Roses just above Bonifaci beach; a jet set favorite since the '60s, it boasts 34 rooms and suites, a spa, and an indoor pool, with the sea just steps away." - The MICHELIN Guide

We had had the most exceptional afternoon here. We arrived by boat from empuriabrava and had planned to visit another restaurant in the bay. The sea taxi wasn’t available to take us there as it stops at the end of August and we really didn’t want to swim to shore as we had 2 friends who weren’t strong swimmers. Luckily we saw the boat for the Vistabella. We spoke to the driver who organised us a table for 7 people and promptly took us to the shore from our boat. From there the service and food was just fantastic. A special shout to our waiter Dimitri who went above and beyond to look after us. We are already planning our next visit. Thank you for making our holiday x

This is not a 5 star hotel. While the service is indeed on a 5 star level and views from the terrace are very relaxing, all other features are lagging behind the minimal 5 star location experience. 1. Location is far from a prime spots on Costa Brava with relatively long travel distances. 2. Breakfast is very generic and underwhelming. 3. Rooms furniture and appliances are from past milenium (including simple things like towels and bedsheets, that seemed to have seen generations of guests). 4. Mila restaurant, while it does serve fresh seafood, in definitely does not surprise with the selection, nor preparation, but does surprise with the price. We did not dare to try the other restaurant given the reviews. For truly good food experience visit any restaurant in Girona. 5. Bar was closed. 6. Beach paths both ways were closed.

Lovely hotel. On its own you won’t really be walking elsewhere as the coast path needs work. Great staff. Be sure to ask prices for specials in Mila restaurant though. We had an expensive surprise there. Lovely hotel though

Google
3 star hotel pretending to be 5 star. The upside: next to a nice beach (but not as nice as the one 5 minutes walk away). The downside: outdated facilities that don’t justify to be 5 star hotel, very unfriendly service, and chronic lack of water. They give you a 150ml bottle for free and then you pay 3.5eur for the 0.5l water bottle. Water at breakfast in tiny glasses. Valet service is kind of pointless given the parking is just in front and you wait like and idiot for your car to arrive and then have to drive back past where it came from. Breakfast is the same every day and lacks diversity. Food is obviously overpriced. But the egg guy at breakfast deserves a promotion! The 4-star hotel next door though is highly recommended.

I recently stayed at this hotel and overall, the experience was very pleasant. The rooms were clean, well-appointed, and comfortable. I want to give a special shoutout to Adam, who worked as both the bell boy and valet—he was incredibly kind, attentive, and made us feel welcome from the moment we arrived. Unfortunately, our experience wasn’t entirely seamless. When we tried to rebook another night for our stay, we were told we couldn’t receive the same rate because we had originally booked through a third party. The only reason we wanted to extend our stay was because we had booked nonrefundable massage services for the following day—something we weren’t informed about at the time of purchase. This created a frustrating situation: we couldn’t justify paying a much higher rate just to stay the extra night, but we were also stuck with nonrefundable spa appointments. As a result, we had to leave and then return later in the day, which felt like a waste of time and disrupted our plans to explore the city. I wish the hotel had communicated the spa policy more clearly and made a better effort to accommodate returning guests under the same rate. That said, the quality of the rooms and the excellent service from staff like Adam made a strong impression.

This hotel is sensational, though not so modern, it has the most friendly staff just wanting to make your stay the best. The views were nothing short of spectacular, the masseuse was one of the better to found in a hotel spa, and the wine list (and cellar) was extensive enough for all those that love good wine. Food, again excellent though not so modern. Oskar made my stay so special but sorting out special local restaurants etc.

My wife and I stayed two nights at Hotel Vistabella in the Penthouse Suite, paying nearly $700 per night for this advertised 5-star hotel. Expecting top-tier service and accommodations, we were quickly disappointed. Check-in was slow and disorganized, culminating in being charged twice for our stay, which required correction. The process suggested a lack of coordination in handling payments. Upon entering our room, the terrace overlooking the sea was breathtaking, and the views were undeniably spectacular. However, the room itself was outdated, with a cheap-looking bed and furniture that felt out of place or in need of replacement. Two complimentary coffee pods were provided, but a note indicated additional pods would cost €2 each—a detail that felt petty for a 5-star property. After resolving a Wi-Fi issue, we returned from lunch to find the door lock malfunctioning. I contacted reception, who seemed already irritated from the Wi-Fi complaint. They sent a courteous bellboy to address the lock, but he was unable to fix it. Frustrated by the lack of updates, I visited reception, only to be met with rudeness and annoyance for inquiring about the situation. Eventually, the hotel owner was called to the room. Instead of offering a simple apology, he became defensive, stating, "Things break. Doors break, TVs break." As a guest, I found this dismissive and unprofessional—I expected an apology and a solution, not excuses. Feeling disrespected, I expressed my frustration with the lack of customer service and the owner’s attitude. After a defensive argument, he acknowledged the door couldn’t be fixed and moved us to a slightly upgraded room. I believe he realized his approach was unacceptable. Later, a bottle of champagne arrived with an apology, which I appreciated, but it didn’t erase the fact that this was the worst treatment I’ve ever experienced from hotel management. The new room was marginally better, featuring a nice hot tub, but the furniture still felt cheap, and the bed was uncomfortable—not what you expect from a 5-star hotel. Breakfast was satisfactory but unremarkable, with food quality suggesting cost-cutting measures. However, the breakfast staff were kind and accommodating, and they could teach the owner a lesson in customer service. Ultimately, I do not recommend Hotel Vistabella. The stunning views do not compensate for the subpar customer service, outdated rooms, and overall lack of 5-star quality.

We stayed here for my birthday and it could not have been a better choice. The staff are WONDERFUL. They decorated the room so nicely which was a delightful surprise. The valets and the front desk staff were so helpful and accommodating. The onsite restaurants were also delicious and the view from the balcony was out of this world. Would love to come back to this amazing property someday!

Yelp
Wonderful views and an excellent staff. The rooms were clean, and my room had a view of the Mediterranean Sea with a large balcony. The room I was in had two big palm trees blocking part of the sunset, still it was beautiful. The breakfast buffet is out of this world. Two rooms of food and beverage. Everything you could ever want for breakfast. Including a champagne cocktail. There is a small indoor pool, but nice jacuzzi area overlooking the Mediterranean. You have to get towels at the front desk for both the pool and the beach, which seems a bit odd, but not too bad if you remember ahead of time. The beach just below the hotel is too small, but down the path 200m is a larger beach that is sufficient with great views. I would highly recommend eating at Gastromar. They share the same kitchen as Michelin-rated El Brancs. The Turbot, cocktails, and dessert were excellent here.

Yelp
Classic, pebbly beach Mediterranean Hotel. We did a day trip by car to the nearby town (home of Dali) which was fun to walk around and shop - but honestly could have saved that for a different trip. There was no real need to leave this hotel. You can find all the relaxing you need here and it had hands down the most beautiful little cove beach and views that we saw along the coast! Felt like a 60s movie star swansong, with its cascading balconies, views, slow dining in the restaurants, and fun throwback cocktails in whimsical glassware. The breakfast was wonderful, and for lunch and dinners we ate at all three restaurants. The fare at all 3 is similar, but gets elevated in old fashioned elegance as you rose up each level. They all served seafood and we had an amazing white wine from the local vinyard! We did expect to see more "lunchy" items like fries, calamari, panini/pizzette at the beach level pirate dock bar -like more of a beach shack - but they are literally prepping out of a cool cave in the wall so no fryer is a minor thing, and it was a cheerful seaside vantage for a long lunch or drinks. Do reserve dinner upstairs as the restaurants can fill up. Last, shout-out to the welcoming help of the team at the front when you arrive! This place is a unique and romantic dream!

Yelp
This is a unreal spot of tranquility with awesome old world amenities. This is one of most romantic spots I have ever been. The staff is great, rooms are nice and views are amazing. The pool is nice, tiny beach is quaint, restaurants amazing and spa is fine.

Yelp
We chose this hotel because we had made a reservation in their signature restaurant, and were definitely impressed by the great and friendly staff. The views overlooking the sea, amazing sea view! We booked a modern room and it was exactly my taste! We will be back for sure.

Yelp
A wonderful place to disconnect from the daily routine with and incredibly friendly staff, beautifuld views and delicious food. Right by the sea it offers everything what you need: quietness, relax, and an incredible dining offer eith 4 restaurants to choose

Yelp
the hotel and staff were wonderful. amazing view and great location. however the web site is deceiving in terms of the beach area and lack of outdoor pool. there is an indoor pool only. the beach area is very small (only about 10 chairs provided or room for) very rocky. too rocky to walk on without shoes. very little area between the water and sand area. VERY VERY small. there is a nice beach that is a 7 min walk with lots of sand and places to sit. i had a vision of sitting at the pool and having a cocktail and a much nicer beach. there was very small area you could sit in a lounge chair and get waited on but if the property was busy i would imagine those seats would be impossible to get. the location is great and you are right on the hiking path. there are truly 4 individual restaurants on site with great food and varied menus but VERY expensive. a burger at the casual spot was 25 Euro!!! our room had a view of the parking lot and dumpster so that was not very appealing either. little balcony only had crappy plastic chair and not big enough for two people to sit nor would you want to use it given the view and the dumpster.
