"With its waterfront location across from the San Francisco Ferry Building on the edge of downtown, the Hotel Vitale is an ideal launchpad to explore San Francisco. Rooms have expansive views of the Bay or the city, and travelers can step out onto the Embarcadero for a morning run, to browse at one of three weekly farmers' markets at the Ferry Building, or for a quick trip to AT&T Park to see a ballgame. Dine on Italian-influenced dishes at Americano, which also has a beautiful outdoor bar—heated throughout the foggy San Francisco summer. The property's decor is freshened with thoughtful details like sprigs of lavender tucked in guest room doors and river stones on bedside tables."

Hotel Vitale, a Joie de Vivre Hotel

"How did it strike you on arrival? The location is amazing. Hotel Vitale is right on the Embarcadero, across from the Ferry Building. There's easy access to Muni and BART, and it really feels like San Francisco, with great views of the water and the Bay Bridge. Doormen wait to greet you, and the hotel feels welcoming, not snooty; it's less swank and more updated, modern comfort—with clean lines, rough-hewn stone columns, and a muted palette. What’s the crowd like?In Americano, the bar and restaurant off of the lobby, you'll see a lot of men in suits and women in work dresses and heels. The lobby is a mixed crowd sporting both work attire and tourists in jeans and T-shirts. The good stuff: Tell us about your room. All of the Hotel Vitale's rooms include workstations with ergonomic chairs and spa-style limestone bathrooms. Some rooms have full or partial views of the Bay. Though some reviews complain about cramped rooms, for the most part, they are light and airy, with a blue and green color palette, and wood tones on the walls. With throw pillows, a blue patterned coverlet, and a throw blanket, the decor leans a little more bright guest room than hotel. How about the little things, like mini bar, or shower goodies. Any of that find its way into your suitcase?Guests pay a $35 daily "urban fee," which includes day passes to the nearby YMCA, which has a 25-meter lap pool, as well as fitness and yoga classes. That's what I'd steal. There is also a pillow menu with eight different options, from buckwheat to memory foam, and the hotel also has fantastic terry-lined robes—the same ones they use in their spa. Embroidered slippers remind you to "slow down." Please tell us the bathroom won’t let us down. Some rooms include deep soaking tubs while others have rainshowers. The deluxe panoramic circular suite even has a deep soaking tub for two overlooking the water. Bath amenities are by Jonathan Adler. Room service: Worth it?Room service comes from the hotel's restaurant, Americano, where a fresca pizza with mozzarella and crushed tomato is $16. Staff: If you could award one a trophy, who gets it, and why?Everyone on staff was at attention when I walked in, from the doorman to the employee who greeted me from behind the counter. But I had the most interaction with Amal, the spa supervisor, who is very warm and accommodating. Anything stand out about other services and features? Whether it’s childcare, gyms, spas, even parking—whatever stuck with you.The spa. It's very petite, but I don't know of anywhere else in San Francisco where you can enjoy a rooftop bathing ritual. Also, the views from the terraces are amazing; though they can be booked for private events. What was most memorable—or heartbreaking—about your stay?Be warned that the Americano pulls in a FiDi happy hour crowd. Bottom line: worth it, and why?If you're looking to tourist, or want an easy location to hop over to the Ferry Building or jump on BART, it's a great spot. If you're looking for something a little more opulent, this isn't the hotel for you." - Elise Craig

I’d rate it around 4.5 stars, but I’m rounding up here.||First off, I really appreciated the early check-in, which set a nice tone for our visit. The birthday cake waiting for us was a delightful surprise and made our celebration feel extra special. Our room was spacious and beautifully designed, with warm, inviting furniture, cozy throw blankets, and plush pillows that made it very comfortable. We loved the hotel’s focus on sustainability and the woodsy decor—it felt both luxurious and eco-friendly.||The spa, while on the smaller side, offered fantastic massages that were definitely a highlight of our stay. I did wish there were more communal spaces to relax together, as the outdoor areas were a bit too chilly for comfort during our visit. The gym, although compact, was well-equipped with a squat rack, leg press, heavy dumbbells, and all the essential cardio machines, which was a nice bonus.||One area that could use some improvement was the valet service. At $79 per day, the fee felt a bit steep, especially given our experience. We had a frustrating moment when we asked for our car for a dinner reservation just outside the complimentary drop-off radius. The valet attendant told us it would take 15-20 minutes to get our vehicle, but it seemed like our request was overlooked. After waiting the full 20 minutes, we noticed that our car hadn’t even been started. It was only when another guest arrived to park that our vehicle was finally brought up. I expected a more proactive approach from the valet staff, especially since we were on a tight schedule.|We also ran into an issue with our folio upon departure. A credit that was supposed to be applied was missing, and we ended up waiting for it to be corrected. ||Unfortunately, we had to leave without a resolution, and when I later received the emailed folio, it was still incorrect. I had to call back to sort out the discrepancy.|On a brighter note, the in-room dining service was quite good, and the hotel’s location near the Embarcadero was perfect for our evening plans.||Overall, while we enjoyed our stay at 1 Hotel San Francisco and made some great memories, the valet experience and the issues with our departure folio were notable downsides. I would definitely consider returning in the future.

My husband and I visited Bamford Wellness Spa and had a wonderful experience. From the moment we walked in, the place felt calm and peaceful. The staff were super friendly and made us feel welcome right away.|We had a couples massage . The massage was very relaxing, and the therapists were gentle but effective. |The spa was clean and quiet, with soft music and dim lighting that helped us relax. |Overall, it was a great visit. We left feeling calm, refreshed, and pampered.

Great massage with Belinda but poor overall spa experience. For the price they don’t offer a sauna relaxation lounge or shower. They don’t even offer their guests small snack bites kept at the entrance.

Friendly front desk staff and great view of the water, Bay Bridge and Ferry Bldg from my room. Avis was especially helpful with my bags and directions as part of the front door team. I would definitely stay at 1Hotel again.
