Großtalstraße 28, 79117 Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany Get directions

"This inn has existed since 1683. Matthias Schwer is the 4th generation of the family to carry on the tradition. Here, just outside St Märgen at an altitude of approx. 1 030m, a father-and-son team cook up quality seasonal fare, including local game, and classics such as maultaschen and schnitzel. There is an à la carte menu, the "Tradition" set menu and the vegetable "Gemussmenü" (only by ordering in advance). Comfortable guestrooms and holiday apartments for overnight guests." - Michelin Inspector

I have fond memories of this restaurant going back 30 years when I first met my wife who lives close by.||It's a family establishment and I believe the next generation of the original family runs it now. ||This restaurant has been around for several hundred years.||The current team clearly knows how to maintain a wonderful tradition as it's been a few years since I've been here. ||I was very excited for the visit and it did not disappoint.||The food here is superb, some of the best in Germany. Portions are generous and the service is top notch. ||They bake their own bread and have wonderful menu. I recommend any of the meat dishes with the sauces. ||I had the Hunter's Pot - several meats with homemade German noodles in a mushroom sauce - simply delightful.||If you want super traditional high quality German food in a no-tourist atmosphere I highly recommend the place.||The prices are very reasonable for what you get.||

We were last here (for just one night) in 2013, and vowed to return. This time we stayed two nights, and it was superb. We had a spacious room with windows on two sides. Very comfortable. Breakfasts excellent, as others have mentioned. ||||But we really came here for the dinners, which are fantastic. Really good South German cooking - and very generous portions. Plenty of choice on the (German) menu - I had Duck Breast one night, and Chanterelles (Pfifferlinge) in Cream Sauce the other. Lovely trout too. Lovely staff, including some who spoke very good English. Prices to match the quality, but well worth it IMO.||||We found Herr Hug, the owner, very willing to help in any way - we did have a small problem with our room, which was fixed rapidly.||||Next time we'll stay three nights and we might at last get to see Freiburg!

We stayed for three nights and had two rooms. Both rooms were great. Clean, comfortable, lots of space. We agree with the other reviewers about the breakfasts. The staff we met did not speak much English. But then we don't speak any German. However we all managed to work out what we needed and what to do. There are a number of restaurants in Kirchzartner about 15 minutes drive away. Reception are happy to make a booking (necessary for Fridays and the weekends). There is a bus stop outside the hotel that takes you the tram terminus (line 1) which takes you directly to the centre of Freiburg. About 20 minutes in total. Buy a 24 hour ticket for 5 people if there are three or more of you - cheapest way to get into town and you can use it multiple times during the day. The buses and trams run frequently into the evening. ||||The restaurant was only open on the Wednesday evening we were there. Reception will make a reservation for you - necessary. The menu is in German (which you'd sort of expect wouldn't you) and we needed help to understand it. The staff were happy to explain the menu. Very good food, beautifully cooked and substantial portions. Go hungry. We had three mains only, two large beers and two glasses of wine. The meal came to €100. A little pricey but worth it. We think we didn't eat much breakfast the following day.

We are a family of 5 so had to book 2 rooms. We were greeted by the owner who was very friendly and helpful (his English is fantastic). It was lovely and quiet and everyone slept well. The breakfast buffet was generous and everything was lovely and fresh. It is a little dated but this didn't really matter as we didn't come to spend all our time in the hotel! Freiburg is a lovely city, with lots of fantastic places to eat! The Saturday morning market was a real hit, especially the bratwurst!

The dining room is very twee and pretty. One waiter (the owner) does it all but he is very good. Big portions, good food. Anything pork and you get two pork loins plus sides which always includes a separate side salad. Closed on Mondays. Gets busy but worth waiting at the bar for. Mostly German diners, few French, English rare.

Excellent way to near the end of our 71 day trek in Europe. Wild duo was par excellence. Roasted liver and basmati rice was A+. Recommend to any connessoir of German cuisine.

Found this based on location and trip advisor reviews and have to say very happy with stay.||||One of the great strengths of this place is the staff: they were very friendly, and even though not all speak English, they still managed to answer all our questions and more. The little extras such free cake and gumi bears in the foyer just make it that little bit more special and welcoming. The breakfast was great as well, very traditional German and delicious (yogurt with cereal, brotchen and cheese etc). There is also a table tennis table and some weights equipment and a jacuzzi in a small room in the basement (Jacuzzi out of order though).||||Would definately recommend for a stay in the Black Forrest but you will need a car if you don't want to mess about with buses etc. Parking wasn't a problem. There is also free wi fi which is of a moderate speed.||||The only reason this did not get a 5* review is that the rooms are a little dated, the jacuzzi was out of order and the restaurant was closed on Sunday and Monday which we never got chance to try unfortunately. Other than that, an excellent stay.

We were in this restaurant for a family dinner. This is an old fashioned family business for a few generations, I guess. Food is high quality but for fans of this kind of German kitchen, to my mind, it is a little bit too heavy and fat. Prices are also quite high, service is OK.
