On the Grid : Hot Lips Pizza

"One of six locations in Portland, this local chain offers seriously tasty pies. They tout that the ingredients are local, and this is cool, but mostly it’s the variety that sets Hot Lips above other pizza slingers. Pulled pork. Blue cheese, apple, and walnuts. Vegan cheese. Definitely a good option for vegans and vegetarians looking for more than a basic pizza. Oh, and they make their own sodas, in flavors like Marionberry and Hawaiian Ginger Ale." - Kevin M. Google
It’s in my neighborhood and finally gave it a try. Pizza isn’t bad. I can rerun this place in the future. The bear selection is good. The seating area is large , they also have outside seatings, I’d like to try outside seating when it’s nice out. I’m glad I found a decent pizza shop in the walking distance.

Google
Very chill place. ♡ The staff are very nice! Definitely come here with a friend. There is indoor seating and outdoor seating and parking isn't too bad either! Everything I've tried from here tastes amazing too!

Google
Wow! Even the response (owner) was a LIE.. THANKS FOR NOTHING OWNER! After ordering and paying I was COMPLETELY ignored while customers came and went. When I finally approached a now different counter person I was told there had been a mistake and it would be at least another 10 mins which turned out to be at least 15, I was offered a cookie :/ w my pizza! No thanks totally rude totally NOT worth it cuz when I finally got home the pizza was not that good :( will not be back

Google
Just had my very first experience here and it was amazing! Service was excellent. My gluten free pizza tasted better than regular pizza!!! I will definitely be back!❤️

Casual pizzeria in a quiet part of the city by Jamison Square in a historic building. Great pizza great service plenty of seating inside and out.

Every time I fly out of Portland this is my spot!!!!!!!! Pizza taste so good, make you wonna Slap yo Momma. Then mediately apologize, but after she tries she will understand 😋. I can't remember the guys name at the moment but the customer service is Gr8 as well!!! Helped me out knowing I was traveling!!!

Google
I've been here twice and it has been great both times. I prefer a thinner pizza crust and it's perfect here. Also, the bourbon cherry cider is delicious. $8.50 for a piece of pizza and a pint cant be beat!

Google
DO NOT PATRONIZE THIS PLACE AT ALL! Gary "the supervisor" just blew a $2000 catering order because of his absolutely ATROCIOUS attitude and customer service. Possibly the worst I have ever experienced. You mine as well just burn a pile of Benjamins in the parking lot. This was the customer service equivalent. I have heard about the poor customer service here, but it's another thing to experience it. Research shows that for every negative online review, there are over a dozen actual negative experiences. You do the math. Dimo's Pizza gets my $2000. Nice job GARY THE SUPERVISOR!

Yelp
My husband's favorite food is pizza so naturally one of our first stops in Portland was Hot Lips. We were between Sizzle Pie and Hot Lips and a friend told us she prefers Hot Lips and the reviews were better as well. The pizza itself was super yummy, the crust was thin and crispy. The basil pesto breadstick had a lot of pesto flavor and dipped in ranch was Heaven. The jalapeño sauce made the pizza in my opinion. It wasn't too spicy that it overpowered the pizza but just enough kick to bring out the flavors. I'm also such a sauce and condiment person so I am such a sucker for a good dipping sauce. My husband and I are currently sober so we were happy to see a wide selection of non alcoholic beers. The ranch was yummy and flavorful. Still my favorite pizza in the world is Regents Chicago style pizza in La Jolla but Hot Lips still was a yummy meal!

Yelp
I happened to be in the area at lunchtime and stopped into HotLips for a slice. This location is in the Eco Trust building. I had never been here before, but it's pretty cute. They have a nice patio, wonderful old wide plank wood floors, just a couple of indoor tables, and of course, pizza, sodas, and ice cream sandwiches from Ruby Jewel. I got the available vegetarian slice (Winterita - marinara and basil, even though the temperature outside tells me it's very much summer). They heated it up for me. It was tasty and service was friendly. I think it came out to about $5 for a slice after tip.

K W.

Yelp
It's not bad, but it's way to greasy in my opinion. i won't go back! Parking is hard to find the restaurant it's self was clean and the person behind the counter was pleasant.

Yelp
First meal in Portland! Super delicious , the spud bacon pizza I've never heard of anywhere and wow so good. Very balanced and unexpected. I also got the ginger soda and wow, yum, the ginger heat really comes out without being overwhelming. Something I ordered was out of stock, but they called and gave me options. The delivery driver texted me as requested so I could meet the on the first floor. Everything was great. Thanks

Yelp
Stumbled on this place thanks to their happy hour sign! We stopped in to see what the specials were and landed on a $4 pint, pizza slice and breadstick! The gentleman at the register was super friendly and helpful, and even gave us both the marinara and house made ranch to try since we were from out of town! We got the cider, specialty pizza with the chicken sausage, onion and arugula, and the parmesan breadstick. All were great, but I'll definitely be dreaming about that breadstick later!

Yelp
Simple, quick, and friendly. Not more you can ask from a pizza spot. Our hungry group ordered an 18-inch half and half pie of the Artichoke Garlic Sauc and the Brooklyn. The pie came piping hot. It's full of toppings as well. I love how the Artichoke one tasted, creamy and garlicky. The Brooklyn one was good too with tomatoes and olives but my vote goes to the Artichoke. I do love how their crust was very thin and evenly crisp and brown at the base. The dough didn't impart too much flavor but the texture was on point. Pretty happy with the spot, all in all.
google avatar

Yelp
this location has plenty of spacing. the pizza slices are new york sizes and the crust is a very crispy and satisfying texture. that was my favorite thing about the pizza. i liked the natalia but i wish they put more toppings on. the breadsticks were okay, i would not get them again next time. they weren't as flavorful or crunchy as i wished. the employees were super nice and fun to talk to. i would come back here for the pizza!

Yelp
Hands down the BEST pizza in town and yes, I've tried the 2 that everyone raves about being the best. But none are as good as Hot Lips, it's not even up for debate, it's simply a fact! I'd been going to the PSU Hot Lips when it was around, back when I was in college, a loooong time ago lol. The fact that it's continued to be so delicious after all these years, decades even, is pretty amazing. Even great places aren't always consistent. My photos are of the vegetarian Summerita we had this month, and Summerita and Winterita half & half we had the previous month. The dough is fabulous, and the toppings are fresh and delish. I've also had their vegan pizza, and wow, you don't even miss the cheese or meat! Not even the cheese and I'm a cheese fanatic! This place is ridiculously outstanding! The staff are all super nice! I only know Drew by name and he's always so friendly and personable. You just can't go wrong here. Just. Can't.
google avatar

Cory P.

Yelp
Good pizza with a nice setting. Nothing life changing but better than average New York style pies and good sides like garlic sticks and pesto sticks. Would definitely come back if I'm back in PDX area.
google avatar

Kati P.

Yelp
I'm from New Jersey and am a total pizza snob. This place was sensational and passed my snob test!!! Best of all, they had vegan cheese. Yippee!!!

Elizabeth M.

Yelp
There was more than one attempt to eat here when the service felt so gross the pizza lost its taste. The woman tonight was brash. She was tolling her eyes and condescending. In a matter of 9 min to come pick up 4 slices, they sold them. She was at least kind enough to tell me I should have known better than to ask for what they had before coming. Good pizza. Fire the staff that make your pizza taste as gross as the way they treat your customers.
google avatar

Yelp
Always on a mission to find a good thin crust pizza, HOTLIPS creates a really tasty pie! The crust is thin and has the right chew, the ingredients are fresh and they offer lots of toppings. For me it's a margarita pie, its the benchmark before I order anything else. Theirs has the right balance of the simple combo of tomato, mozzarella and basil. Simple and sooo good! Pepperoni is my second choice and it's also very tasty, not too greasy as some pepperoni pizza can be. The Pearl location gets crowded but lines move fast.
google avatar

Kyle C.

Yelp
Service: Pizza: Although quite oily on the top, the under carrier was crisp. I wish I had the ability to take one slice home and toast it for personal preference! Sheesh these slices are big and filling. I definitely could have had just one and a beer this time around. Crust is bomb dot com, wish there was more :(
google avatar

Danielle C.

Yelp
Mark was SO nice accommodating a large semi-last-minute order. This location is always friendly, fast, and delicious. Thank you Mark & team!
google avatar

Ted P.

Yelp
Yo $4 pints at happy hour. You can't find this anywhere on the west coast. And slices. You cannot miss. Cannot miss. Old school Portland institution. Come out and support it!
google avatar

Victor G.

Yelp
I dont even need know where to start, but the order of breadstick was so embarrassing that i couldn't believe it. Solely because of the breadstick, they are getting a 1 star. If i was able to give a lower score, i definitely would. Also, even the pizza crust was a little messed up in the box and normally, i wouldn't care but added to the breadstick its clear that either they just threw this order out, or thats just how all orders are. The website needs to be more descriptive because the delivery driver was, but because of the breadstick, i would never order from here again.
google avatar

Daniel J.

Yelp
My pizza took 2 hours to deliver and it was charred through. (I live down the street and so make your own assumptions.) I honestly would've been happier if they had stop taking orders if they were that busy. Which was the excuse I was given. In any case if you still insist on giving me a burned pizza, free would be only appropriate. It would have made me forget that I couldn't eat that night!
google avatar

Daphne C.

Yelp
This is how the pizza came. A sloppy greasy inedible mess. Pizza should never flop like this. So much oil!!
google avatar

Ryan E.

Yelp
The pizza was amazing! I came here with some coworkers for lunch and we were very impressed! My coworkers ordered whole pizza while I ordered pizza by the slice. The sauce, crust, toppings and cheese were all perfect and left everyone satisfied. We also came during happy hour and got some good drinks to go with the meal. Would come here again
google avatar

Sanjit K.

Yelp
This place is ridiculous. No indoor seating, surly staff, carry out only. Only pepperon and i cheese available. 15 minute wait at window with only one other customer ahead of me. What is going on with this place? A disgrace. Going to Pizza Schmizza next time.
google avatar

Charlie S.

Yelp
My favorite pizza in Portland. The toppings and combinations are creative, unique and delicious. Great options for vegetarians, meat-eaters and vegans alike. The quality of the ingredients is really good too - good quality cheese, fresh tasting vegetables and sauce, etc. My go-to is the winterita, which is dollops of red sauce and dollops of pesto and dollops of cheese. It's basic, but a combination that goes really well together. I love trying their new pizzas they offer on rotation too. Always find something new I like.

Yelp
Sustainable and certified Shepherds grain (frown by a handful of Oregon farmers) - this wheat flour is what makes this pizza taste great. But that is not all. It starts with dirt. It starts with love for the soil. Seed to plant to wheat flour to fermented pizza dough. Healthier soil means healthier and more nutritious food. The soil is part of the recipe for the great taste in the pie. And Hot Lips knows how best how to prep the dough, flip it, spread the tomato sauce and scatter farm fresh fresh ingredients. Into the oven and bake. 20 minutes later contactless pickup. I walk there in a matter of minutes. Walk home. Pop a few slices in the oven to re-heat. Since the pandemic, we've ordered at the rate of about one a week. Our favorite is the Winteria, pesto and marinara with mozzarella fresh mozzarella. Add toppings ok. Pie perfection! Week in and week out the pie is consistent, good crunch on the crust and good distribution of toppings. A family owned and operated pizza shop since 1984.

Ray F.

Yelp
Very good pizza and super friendly staff! They have a nice patio that you can eat on. If you are from out of town - it is a little tucked back off of the street so keep your eyes open. If you're staying in one of the near by hotels and are looking for a local pizza option, I definitely recommend HOTLIPS.
google avatar

Rob M.

Yelp
Giant pies, terrific crust, toppings are generous. Can be a little spendy(but where in the Pearl isn't these days) but the pesto breadsticks are a must have for our household. Will say, the online ordering doesn't have the ability to denote what has been 86'd for the day, so I've been let down a few times.
google avatar

Lauren T.

Yelp
Pleasantly surprised by the taste and quality of the food here. My date and I started off with the pesto bread sticks, which were absolutely delish! The pesto flavor was strong, but not overbearing. I didn't really feel like the marinara sauce was needed, but it was nice that it was included. The "baller" aka meatball pizza was great as well. The homemade meatballs were super tasty, but I really enjoyed how light, chewy, and tasty the crust was. This was another food highlight of Portland!
google avatar

Yelp
Not even sure how I've gone so long without reviewing my favorite Hotlips location! I seriously have spent so much time here that it is almost impossible for me to think of not at least stopping in for a slice each time I'm in town. So, if you get here by 11 you can score $2 slices of cheese pizza goodness. I can eat two whole slices in one sitting....something I do far too often but somehow not enough. So, yeah I love their cheese pizza for the thin crust and cheesy goodness, also I dig their sauce. They all come together to make a slice that I eat from cheesy bottom, to crusty doughy top! I'm a trash person and I always spring for their homemade ranch for dipping, because everyday is the first of the month when your eating pizza! Anyway, download the ChinookBook app to get free slice rewards! Also, pay no mind to that chick huddled at a table eating pizza with glee... it's a treat for me!

Hideko O.

Yelp
I picked up from this place more than two months ago for the first time, and their pizza exceeded my expectation, so I decided to order again. I liked this place because they had no-cheeze vegan pizzas on the menu, so I went back only because of their vegan pizza. But when I got home and opened the box, there was real cheese on my pizza. Moreover, the distribution of the toppings was uneven, and one slice had no toppings--except the marinara and cheese. Putting real cheese on vegan pizza is a fatal, unforgivable mistake. I thought I found a good vegan pizza place in Portland, but now I have to look for another place. An insignificant plus is that I liked their salad and marinara!
google avatar

Yelp
The Waldorf is back! Deliciously light and crisp crust topped with walnuts, apples, and blue cheese. Very satisfying, lightly salty and sweet and 100% tasty!
google avatar

Lyndsay W.

Yelp
The perfect lunch spot- indoor outdoor seating options with vegan slices always ready. Popped by on peak lunch hour and the staff was so friendly & upbeat. Thanks for the yummy pizza?

Yelp
With dine-in closed at the moment don't fret as Hot Lips is allowing delivery for their large thin cut slices. Originally I tried ordering on the Yelp/Caviar app but I didn't find the option to customize the 18' we decided to get so I decided to call in and they were kind enough to take orders over the phone as well. Half pepperoni & half mushroom/pesto these pizzas are massive. The whole pie was even a bit too big for our box that one side was slightly folded in. More pizza? Don't mind if I do. As for the pizzas, I would say that both flavors came in 50/50 for me. The pesto/mushroom is a great vegetarian option that had thick cut mushrooms and a thin layer of pesto to cover the top without it being too overpowering. As for the other half it's pretty hard to go wrong with the classic pepperoni so this one did not fail either. It was interesting to see that they opted in for large/thin slices of pepperoni over the smaller cups I tend to see but still pretty good. I wanted to try their massive breadsticks but unfortunately they were out for the day. :\ I'll need to bookmark them next time I'm craving pie for delivery.
google avatar

Alan K.

Yelp
Awesome pie! Haddem do pesto instead of marinara. Was able to buy a 6-pack. Everything reasonably priced. Damn! Don't miss this joint!
google avatar

Steve L.

Yelp
In town for work, cold and raining so I couldn't leave hotel. Looked at Yelp for good pizza and HOTLIPS had great reviews, so I decided to try it. Delivery by Grubhub which took a long time. Pizza was lukewarm when it arrived. To my surprise, the pizza was fantastic, even almost cold! Their crust was the real surprise - not your average pizza crust at all - a little crispy, a little chewy, 100% delicious! I had the sausage/mushroom/pep/bacon and would definitely recommend! Next time I might just Uber there to actually eat it hot!
google avatar

Y L.

Yelp
Delicious gluten free slice - hot from the oven - super nice staff - will come back for more!!!
google avatar

Kate O.

Yelp
Hot Lips produces consistently delicious pizza. I have been to several different locations, dined-in, takeout, and delivery. Hot Lips even catered my rehearsal dinner. The ingredients are high-quality for this classic style pizza. I've never been disappointed. Most recently, we ordered delivery from the Pearl location, and the employee on the phone was extremely friendly and easy to work with. Our delivery arrived right on time, too. If you're craving some pizza, I would absolutely recommend here.

Kelly N.

Yelp
Great pizza! We've tried a bunch since moving to Portland and this is the best so far.
google avatar

Alan T.

Yelp
Food surprises are all over the place and they are hidden gems. Pizza places are notorious for this and I mean that in a good way. You walk up to a pizza place (some cities a dime a dozen), and your like "hmmmmm do I go in an try? I know what pizza taste like and if I really wanted a slice I can hit up the big chains like Pizza Hut or dominoes". However, you go in and you try a slice and are like "omg! Pizza nirvana". That's hot lips pizza. I go here now EVERYTIME I'm in Portland. So I'm all about the customer experience. This place is minimal touch. Your only interaction is when you order. However, the interactions I have had are all positive. Slices behind the glass are explained and it's one of those places where if I asked for a sample (I know, crazy at a pizza place right?) they would probably give me one. And I like that. I have always thought that the 2 major parts of a pizza are what creates differences between all other pizza places. The crust is number 1 and the sauce is a distant second. If you have some proprietary blend of dough or sauce or both, you can make magic. This place has JUST the right crunch to the crust. It's thin. It's a bit salty, it matches perfectly with a light sauce and toppings. I'm salivating now. Check this place out pls.

Yelp
This is it. I just moved to Portland and my coworkers said this is the best pizza place. They also recommended Baby Doll, which was a big disappointment for me (see my review). As vegetarians, my wife and I ordered a Winterita Fantastic. The toppings were flavorful and plentiful, the crust was great. The pizza wasn't cheap, but it was worth it. Oh, and it was better than any pizza place I visited in California when I lived there (California has godawful pizza). Hotlips is now my go-to pizza place for Portland.
google avatar

James M.

Yelp
This was my first time coming to HOTLIPS and there are quite a few reasons why I would return. But first my story why I came to them I. The first place. If you've read my reviews you know I use many establishments for the lunch and learns I teach. I was given a food restrictions for an Architectural firm I was going to be teaching at, which is normal. So I began my research and got lips could fill my every request! From yummy salads to gluten free options with their pizza! And yes it was sooo good there were no left overs! HOTLIPS keeps it simple. They make great pizza and offer a great selection of local craft beers. Not a whole lot to say after that, accept "can I have another! Please!"
google avatar

Tim T.

Yelp
Nice people, delivered a couple tasty pies to us at the Coliseum. Combo was excellent, Hawaiian had big slices of pineapple. Really good! Thanks!
google avatar

Katie K.

Yelp
Excellent, classic, well crafted pizza? Look no further. I've only done delivery so far so I can't attest to much more than that! It's delicious, my favorite! PS. Dear Hotlips! The small "cup and curl" pepperoni's are dearly missed!

Christopher M.

Yelp
Pizza was great, service was even better! Highly recommended pizza place if you are in the area.
google avatar

Mark L.

Yelp
Oooooh Hot Lips Pizza pulls me in every time. This place is dangerously close to work and has creative and delicious slices consistently rotating. I'm so thankful that the space is a judgement free zone when I go in and order multiple slices just for myself. When you find that good pizza place that uses fresh ingredients, and is generous with the toppings! I've been there and enjoyed the traditional pepperoni slice. I've also been there and enjoyed the deliciousness of Hawaiian slices with fresh not canned pineapple! But most of all I've been gleefully surprised at how good the veggie slices are, for example; broccoli, cheddar, HAZELNUT pizza with a squash sauce. Oh yeah they also have great salad and breadsticks, but it's all about the pizza.
google avatar

Charles T.

Yelp
I had pizza by the slice and a basil bread stick. The crust is light and just crispy enough and there are many inventive topping combos. If you need a quick slice without waiting, this is the place.
google avatar

Jenne S.

Yelp
Hotlips is one of my favorite pizza places in the PDX area! Slices are great, even wheat crust with veggies are good. Their gluten free pizza is nice as well. Employees always seem to be friendly too.
google avatar

Abby M.

Yelp
My fiancé got a piece after leaving Republica hungry. It was better than our overrated, overpriced meal! The only run was wanted more and it was 5min before closing. They would not dish. Bummer for my cravings, good for my figure.
google avatar

Sam L.

Yelp
Waited over an hour for one pepperoni pizza. Absolutely insane. Stay away from this place.

Jim W.

Yelp
Don't order here if you want a pleasant time, This was the worst single phone conversation i have ever had and I am 70 years old. I was not allowed to finish even one sentence without interuption and arguement. The employee was super rude and when complained to corporate offices, no reply at all.
google avatar

Natalie N.

Yelp
It's just okay. It has a decent taste and crust but I don't think it's super impressive...Maybe for Portland. However, as a native New Yorker, it is far from great.

jamal h.

Yelp
Pizza was gross. Little cheese. The sausage sucked. The pepperoni was sparse and tasted like hormel. 36$ I'd rather haven't gotten a frozen pizza. Bogus
