Hotville Chicken - Review - Baldwin Hills - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"You can find quality hot chicken all over LA these days, but make no mistake, Hotville is an extremely big deal. For one, the Crenshaw restaurant is owned and operated by a member of the family behind Nashville’s iconic Prince’s Hot Chicken. Secondly, the chicken itself is incredible - the skin is crunchy, crimson, and super-hot - and identical to the quality you’d get in Tennessee. But for us, the most exciting (and unexpected) element of Hotville is how tremendous everything else on the menu is. From a fried fish sandwich and banana cream pudding to the best mac and cheese we’ve eaten in LA in a long time - Hotville is much more than just a Nashville chicken spot, it’s a full restaurant that everyone needs to be eating at right now. photo credit: Jakob Layman" - Brant Cox

Google
Hotville serves Nashville-style hot chicken with a Southern LA twist. I ordered the “Shaw” level of heat and it was fiery but flavorful. The owner greeted everyone, and you can tell it’s a family-run business. The greens and cornbread on the side rounded the meal out perfectly. Seating is limited, so I recommend takeout

Google
The place was nice. A little old school rustic vibe. The food was pretty good, serve in big portions. Their Shaw burger was good. Full chicken breast meat in crunchy breading in a brioche bread. Their fries was pretty generic with seasoning. Food was okay. You could get the same thing in other places for a cheaper price in my opinion. Was not a big fan of their customer service. The lady who served my meal seemed apathetic. Felt like they didn't acknowledge I was there... but instead they entertained the other customers 2 booths behind me a number of times. It was different compared to my first time here ( they were nice and engaging) The parking is a lot since it is near the mall.

Wow! What an amazing establishment, we were greeted and welcomed warmly as soon as we walked in. The chicken is amazing, very flavorful and not dry for once! The fried fish(swai) has to be the best fried fish I have ever tasted. It is perfectly seasoned and expertly cooked. The Cali love heat level is perfect for those who cannot stand high spice levels and still want a little kick, the Music city medium is no joke. The wings were sold out, breast and literally the order before us bought the last of the leg quarters, a place normally only sells out because they are just that good and this place is no exception. We will definitely return to this place and hopefully sooner than later. Thank you!

Google
First of all, it's a very cute back porch kinda vibe. The greeter/order taker is welcoming and accommodating, taking her time to explain for new customers. I ordered the chicken sandwich with a side of mac n cheese and lemonade and it looked so good when the order came. It was all very good, nice size portions and definitely filling. I got the Cali mild spice and am very happy it was explained to me the degree of heat because this was perfect to taste some heat but not be overwhelmed by it. I like to taste my food and never add hot sauce to anything as a reference. I was asked multiple times if I needed anything else and if everything was OK. They were so sweet and I am disappointed that I live in the neighborhood and have only just stepped inside, although I did return the next week. I highly recommend and want to see this restaurant protected.

Google
Definitely one of the best hot chicken I ever had. They make it fresh to order - i liked both spice levels that are between least and high! Although the medium is too spicy for me, I enjoyed the kick out of it! The people working here are very courteous and treat the customers well! Will definitely revisit when I come to LA

Google
Chicken sandwich was very dry. Catfish sandwich was good but way too greasy. Mac and cheese was not bad -- it had some oregano or some kind of herb to make it different. The pasta in the mac and cheese was very soft so don't get it if you're not into that. As for spice level it all depends on your own tolerance. They let you sample Music City Medium, so make sure to do that first! Bte the service is excellent! Super sweet and friendly staff.

Google
The service was great and the employees were knowledgeable about the food. They really get into the theme of Nashville fried chicken. We got to try the medium spicy level which was tolerable for someone who really likes spicy, but my wife couldn't handle it. I ordered the fried fish sandwich with medium spice and she ordered the fried chicken sandwich. I really enjoyed the fish, perfect spice, perfect flavor and crunch. My wife found that her chicken sandwich was a bit dry. We enjoyed the french fries, baked beans trio and kaleslaw, though the mac and cheese was just okay. We ordered carry-out during "shelter in place" and the wait was longer than expected. We will be coming back to try the spiciest level. We are also curious to return to see how the speed of service is during the in person experience.

We arrived at almost closing, but when we walked in, we felt right at home! It was so welcoming with all the decor and the owner there to greet us and take our order. She was very friendly! The food was perfect and fresh. We got a chance to really admire all of our so familiar Nashville details in the restaurant. It was superbly clean! Convenience of napkins, plastic ware and their Hotville hot sauce right at the table. Wait time was amazing for authentic Nashville hot chicken or even Princes chicken, we waited about 30 min. So worth it. Hope to visit again!

Yelp
This Christmas I had a delicious meal catered for my family by from Dulan's On Crenshaw. My guests raved about the meal, because not only was it tasty, it was beautifully presented and the portions were generous. I would like to thank Christian Ferrell, the general manager, who personally coordinated my order and had it delivered to me. I can't wait to do business with Dulan's, again. I recommend them highly.

Yelp
This was my first time here and the only word I can use to describe my experience is excellent! Nice and friendly staff and the food reminds me of my mothers cooking. Those smothered pork chops, Mac & cheese, collard greens were almost perfect. The only thing I would change is to bring the corn bread to the table with the meal instead of bringing it out with the drinks. It was cold by the time our food arrived but I didn't let that stop me from eating it. That's the reason I said almost perfect. I ordered a Tiger Woods to drink and I didn't let them take it away until that glass was empty. They even brought out another one in a to go cup for me. I'll be going back for sure. If you are in the area, you should give them a try. Scratch that, go even if you are not in the area. You can thank me later!

Yelp
This was our first time eating here at Dulan's and they did NOT disappoint. Since we were in the area we decided to try this restaurant. We entered about 30mins before closing and unlike many other Soul Food places, the delicious items on their menu were still available for ordering! The staff were very welcoming and patient as we reviewed their menu. I ordered their meatloaf because it's rare to find a place who still uses red sauce on the meat. I must say, the sauce had a very unique taste. To ME it tastes like spaghetti sauce with sugar because it was sweet. I loved it because I love sugar in my spaghetti. My husband is a Mac and Cheese lover and he really enjoyed it, it was perfectly balanced with the right amount of cheesy. I liked it as well. The greens were good, and it had some type of meat in it as well, maybe neckbones, I think. The candied yams, OMG, the best we've ever had from a soul food spot. So much flavor and well cooked. The smother pork chops were delicious as well. Overall, we would go back. The restaurant was very spacious, clean, and welcoming. Also they do not accept cash so be sure to bring a debit or credit card!

Yelp
I've been going to the location on Manchester for years and although both locations are Dulan's, the food taste completely different. The menu is different. I decided to give them another try after saying I would never return 5 years later. On a Sunday, very busy. Parking is non-existent still. My food was okay. The macaroni was drowning in grease. The greens were flavorless. The short rib had good flavor but they are definitely stingy at this location. I probably had two small pieces of meat for $30. I don't think I'll return a third time but if I do I'll update my review.

Yelp
We invited friends to eat at Dulan's after church. They were pleased with their food. Although my health conscious son complained that his fried chicken was salty and the lemonade was too sugary. I had the short ribs with rice and gravy and cabbage mixed with collard greens. The short ribs were tender and delicious. The gravy had good flavor and the cabbage mixed collard greens were tasty. The service was great and we loved the casual atmosphere. Dulan's makes the best sweet tea make sure to give it a try. Overall our dining experience was nice.

Yelp
10 out of 10 ABSOLUTELY RECOMMEND!!!!!! Went here Saturday afternoon.. first time ever coming here ( don't judge me) my husband ordered turkey wings, Mac and cheese, greens and oxtails to go I ordered the meatloaf with Mac and cheese and yams. BABYYYYYYY when I tell you this food was so bomb!!!! First off the portions are so big we definitely had leftovers to go.. everything was cooked from the soul! And the sweet tea hit just right! I felt love from the moment I walked in .. which I knew was a good sign. Servers were polite and friendly.. just made you feel welcomed. I will be comming back but I know now maybe my husband and I should share ( since you get so much food)

Yelp
My friend took me to Dulan's for a late lunch a few weeks ago. There was a private event in the patio, so the staff were very occupied. As a result, the wait was longer than anticipated, but I just knew my food would be worth the wait. I chose the meatloaf with collard greens and macaroni & cheese as sides, plus sweet tea. Staff gave us fresh cornbread muffins, which were diviiiine. And my meal was SO delicious. I cleaned that plate! Staff were so nice and kind, and apologetic for the delay in service. The restaurant was full, so I knew I was going to eat good, and I was NOT disappointed. I can't wait to try their fried fish next.

Yelp
Tried a few new-to-me items: - fried fish: they seasoned this fish so well! I think it's catfish (forgot to ask). The dinner special comes with 4 pieces. - cabbage: this is solid, I'd ordered it again. I like the cabbage more than the string beans. Staff is really friendly and hospitable. We ordered takeout, but the seating space is nice. There's indoor and outdoor seating. It's counter service if you dine in. Free valet parking.

Yelp
What a fantastic experience! It was about more than food for us. While our meals were fresh, bursting with flavor & well proportioned, the history lesson we received from the owner, Greg really made our time there that much more memorable. Greg gave us a tour through the restaurant, providing details about all of the photos on the walls. We genuinely appreciated his time and attentiveness. We will always visit, whenever in the area'

Yelp
Today we had the pleasure of eating at our amazing local restaurant DULANs! The service was fast and the staff were exceptional! The food tastes amazing and leaves you with a feeling, that you have had a home cooked meal!

Yelp
Thank you for turning me onto this place . The food was delicious and even though on Sunday there was a line , we were served fast. I had the oxtails and she had the fried Chicken .... That and all the sides were delicious .. we took it to a nearby park and had enough left over for two more meals

Yelp
DELICIOUS. OUTSTANDING. EXTREMELY SATISFYING I went to an event at a church where Dulan's had catered the food. The food tasted so much like home cooking, I could not wait to come to the restaurant It did NOT disappoint. The three of us in our party had three different things. -fried chicken, fried fish and smothered pork chops - and we were all THRILLED. The sides had lots of flavor - especially the Mac and Cheese. The corn muffins were substancial in size. The portions were so generous, we could eat until we were full and still have plenty to take home. LOVE the indoor/outdoor patio area. Although it is primarily self serve, the wait staff was friendly and helpful. Will definitely be back and highly recommend.

Yelp
Thanksgiving this year was amazing thanks to Dulan's! I usually cook every year, but said no way this time. Got a couple dinners and it lasted me 4 days. The smothered pork chops, yams, cornbread stuffing, I'm getting hungry all over again just thinking about it. My favorite soul food restaurant hands down.

Yelp
I have been craving meatloaf for weeks. I called Dulan's on Crenshaw today and spoke with Kerri (sp?). I had a question about the type of gravy used for the meatloaf. Kerri was very pleasant and explained that they use red gravy. Not only am I confused by red gravy, I don't want red gravy on my meatloaf. Kerri explained that I could order brown gravy on the side, which I did. I placed my order for delivery. The food arrived nice and hot and my order was correct. The meatloaf was moist and the brown gravy made it taste better. The sides, dressing, cabbage, and rice were okay. Please forgive any typos, this review was typed on a mobile device..

Adrian M.

Yelp
I usually don't like to write poor reviews about restaurants. I'm aware that everyone has an off day. Today I went to Dylan's on Crenshaw and had the worst food that I've ever tasted in my life. I've never left a restaurant and did not want a doggie bag. My guess and I ordered fried pork chops that were only seasoned with numerous amounts of salt. I ordered red beans and rice that tasted awful. The only thing that I could really stomach were the yams and cornbread muffins. It was a complete disaster. Will not be returning. 50+ dollars down the drain.
google avatar

Yelp
This was bomb.com and good service. I love places with soul food cooking. Yes from pork chop, yams and corn bread. Full of people

Yelp
Ordered online and went to pick up in store. The service was super great and the cashier was super nice and helpful. Food was about a 10 minute wait and the manager check up in us and offered water while we wait. The food was pretty good! The collar greens were a bit too salty, but the chicken was very crispy and really good. The Mac and cheese was a little dry but still good! Also got a lemonade slushee and tasted a bit like starburst and very sweet. Would still go again and try the different sides. The dining felt very family friendly would definitely eat in next time to taste the food hot.
google avatar

Yelp
They have really outdone themselves. This is a spot I can frequent again and take great pleasure in the food. We went in for a dine in experience. You order and pay and sit wherever you like and they bring your food out. My smothered dark meat chicken was perfectly seasoned, fresh and crispy. My greens were delicious, especially when I added hot sauce. The Mac n cheese is Top Notch. My cornbread dressing was yummy and very filling. My actual cornbread came out HOT! I have zero complaints regarding the food. My total was 40 something and I got enough for 2 people. My only critique is that the service could have been better. There was an engaging man, Dunham, who was very attentive to us when he wasn't helping others but the rest of the crew seemed quiet and just going about the motions. Maybe, they were shy or just didn't wanna be there. Don't know...that won't stop me from coming back. It's just an observation. I will point out that I wish they served Kool-aid, lol and I wish the to go containers didn't fall apart so easily. Again, this will not stop me from getting my grub on! Dulan's is back and Aunt Kizzy's would be PROUD!

Yelp
I'm from Chicago and I visited this place in November From the moment we walked in the door the customer service started - The food was excellent- fresh, tasty and good. Not overly seasoned but just right! The Ambiance is nice and comfortable- Customer service was off the chain. I would definitely recommend going to this restaurant Shout out to Kerry our server and to Christian the general manager - you all definitely got it right!!! Two thumbs up

Yelp
Dulan's is a staple in LA for soul food, that's for sure. You should be good with almost anything on the menu but let me tell you what you can't skip! THE MAC AND CHEESE! Mac & cheese is one of my guilty pleasures and I consider myself an aficionado. It has all the right elements that make a perfect mac & cheese, that cheesy flavor, a little gooey but not overly so, a lil spice, an amazing crust on top. Just so darn good. Get whatever you want from Dulan's, but do not skip that mac & cheese!
google avatar

Yelp
Dulan's On Crenshaw is back open for business after a major renovation, and let me tell you, it is so nice inside and out. They offer interior seating and outdoor seating but don't worry about getting cold because they have ceiling heating lamps. It looks like they will soon have a window where you can place to-go orders, but for now, you walk inside and place your to-go order. They've been open for a few days now. While I was there, I had the pleasure of meeting the owner, Greg Dulan, who was kind enough to take me and another customer on a tour. He took us to the rear of the property, where they have plans to offer it as an event space, show sports, and also have Sunday brunch!! Yes, Sunday brunch could possibly be coming back :-) I ordered the 1/4 smothered chicken with greens and dressing. The food was really good and not over-seasoned. My daughter had fried fish, macaroni and cheese with mashed potatoes and gravy. I left without getting tartar sauce :-( and I think I should have received cornbread with my order, but there was none in the bag. There's currently street parking available, which I found quickly on the side street. There will also be a parking lot on Crenshaw for customers, perfect if you decide to have an event here. I would definitely recommend Dulan's On Crenshaw for a good meal with quick service.

Yelp
The taste of Los Angeles on Crenshaw is represented here. The remodel is a definate upgrade

Yelp
11/12/24 Fried Chicken dinner: Slice the insides before eating (undone/chicken blood on the bones) Chicken skin dark and spotty (as if cooked in a hurry and in dirty grease) Chicken Dinner of mustard greens (too smoky) and Mac and cheese (just ok) was unfavorable. Corn muffins: A+

Yelp
I was in the area for a meeting & my co-workers suggested we had lunch at Dulan's. I am definitely glad I went with their suggestion because the food was so good. I wanted to try the oxtail but it was not available. I ended up going with the short ribs with candied yams, mac & cheese. The short ribs were super tender & served with gravy over rice. The candy yams were really sweet but so delicious. Mac & cheese were also good. The portions are big so I had some to take home. I definitely need to come back & try the oxtails. I strongly suggest to try Dulan's on Crenshaw if you looking for great Southern style soul food. The food was definitely amazing. The staff is friendly yet professional. The restaurant had a nice vibe. It was not too busy which was perfect to enjoy a good meal.
google avatar

Yelp
I must say today was my first time at Dulan's it was absolutely amazing. Everything was very tasty. Service was outstanding. Weight staff was very personable. They came and checked on you consistently to make sure you had everything you needed. Serving sizes are perfect. One meal is enough really too. Prices are reasonable. Ambience is very nice. Get there early if you're going on a Sunday because the church crowd gets in there and it gets crowded quickly. Free valet parking, which is also a major plus. I will definitely be back and bringing friends with me Thanks Dulan's.
google avatar

Yelp
Food was delicious although I did not receive what I ordered. Ordered a fried chicken meal with dark meat (specifically asked for leg and thigh), Mac n cheese, and greens. I received a breast and wing, yams, and greens. The guy said he'll bring my Mac n cheese but never did. My friend also asked for dark meat (leg and thigh) and received a breast and wing. We figured they ran out of dark meat and just gave us what they had available. Other than that, the ambiance was chill and food was good.

Yelp
Absolutely, amazing wonderful place met the owner, Mr.Dulan he gave me my wife, my brother-in-law, my nephew walk around the restaurant very clean food was delicious. Unfortunately we had to order takeout because we had to get back to Pasadena on the Saturday afternoon, but we highly highly highly highly recommend.

Yelp
Waited an hour for a vegetable plate to go. The service was slow today. The food was good though. Will try it another day in the future to see if the service speed improves.

Yelp
The ambiance and service were great! We decided to dine in, and we missed the Sunday crowd by 20min and were able to pick a great table on the patio. The food was surprisingly great also... I've tried the locations off Manchester & Century plenty of times and was not impressed. The Crenshaw food is prepared a little different and tastes well! The portion sizes are huge!!!! The only thing is the prices are much higher than the other two locations & they don't offer the Sunday deal w/ dessert & drink like the other locations.
google avatar

Lisa U.

Yelp
I tried ordering the food online but there was no option to add oxtails as well as corn and okra , so I called to ask if they had these items and the guy assured me they did , so when I arrived at Dulan's another lady was trying to exchange the oxtails because she stated it's was too salty . When I placed my order for oxtails they pretty much said it's only enough for one person and the meat is loose , the bottom of the container was all that was left . I decided to just order one meal . When I got home the food was too salty , the oxtails , rice and gravy as well as the okra and corn too . So disappointing to have a restaurant in my neighborhood and they really don't care about quality of the food and presentation. My husband was disappointed as well he said pretty much everything was burnt including the cornbread . Dulan's you need to do better !

Yelp

Yelp
First time there since they did their reopening. And I like this restaurant style better than the cafeteria style that they had before. It was nice, clean tge main room could be a little brighter. The staff was really friendly and helpful. It was a group of us, but I ordered the meatloaf cabbage, macaroni and cheese. A side of dressing people in the group ordered fried chicken plates, yams, fish, and when ordering fish just know it's not catfish or red snapper, is swahi. The lemonade was good and they have lemonade, slurpee. And I hear that was really good.

Tokie M.

Yelp
I picked up a Family Meal and it was delicious. Everyone loved the Mac & cheese (wish I got more!) and catfish was seasoned to perfection! Dylan's saved my time and the day. Diner was a 10/10. Thank you!

Victor N.

Yelp
Excellent food and great service for delivery! Dulans is a great as ever! 5 stars easily!

Yelp
The food was not to my liking my fried chicken was overcooked, the Mac n cheese wasn't good at all. I was so disappointed in Dylan and the prices are ridiculous.

Yelp
I'd been waiting for this location to reopen as it is my favorite to go to. Had lunch with my son today and the remodel looks really nice. I do believe they're trying to get "settled" into the new environment. The service was great. All of the staff members and management were super attentive. No complaints whatsoever. The food...I was a little disappointed with my meal. I ordered baked chicken, rice/gravy, mac & cheese and cabbage. In previous visits, my chicken was more juicy and served as two pieces (breast & wing). It was one piece and could have baked a bit longer. Ended up taking it home and putting it in the oven for a bit. *Edit: upon cutting the chicken down, it clearly isn't done (see photo). My rice/gravy wasn't that flavorful and neither was the cabbage. The cornbread has ALWAYS been my favorite - it was moist and was just really good. I don't know if they changed how they make it, but you should go back to the previous recipe. I am going to give it some time because I believe they're trying to re-establish a rhythm.

Sophia M.

Yelp
Ok Dylan's totally redeemed themselves and then some. This is the Dylan's I'm use too. I did not want to tell them who I was because I / we wanted the natural dine in experience. The staff more than accommodating, very kind and welcoming. The food was EXCELLENT, the portions this time were proper and the food was piping hot. Thank you! The ambience was very nice. Thank you Dylan's for the experience that we are use to.

Hadn't been to Dulan's in years..dropped in a few days ago and WOW! There's a new head chef, Ms T..and my goodness it shows. Had meatloaf, cabbage (the best), w/ rice&gravy..and no jiffy cornbread here! Those muffins were from scratch. We ended up there again today (yes twice in one week) and ya'll...the fried chicken was the best I've eaten in Los Angeles in a while. Just know that whatever you decide as your meal, Ms T's at Dulan's will NOT disappoint!

Yelp
The best meatloaf I ever tasted and everything was in point. They serve soft drinks in a big mason jar which you can share with someone. They offer free valet parking as well. Enjoy!

Yelp
I don't know of any soul food restaurant in L.A. or the whole L.A. that compares to Dulan's. They are without peer. I live all the way in Long Beach and I still come there when I have a taste for soul food. Yes, it is worth the trip because it is just that good. As any of the best soul food places they have Peach Cobbler, and it is the absolute TRUTH. People that know something about soul food eat here and this is where I eat.

Yelp
Prior to the Burce Springsteen concert at what's now the Kia Forum last night I went to one of the great Soul Food restaurants nearby, Dulan's on Crenshaw, and had fantastic ox tails that were, literally, fall off the bone tender, with terrific mac and cheese, and an out of this world peach cobbler. The staff could not have made me feel any more welcome despite seemingly surprised that I was there sticking out like a sore thumb. Living in a multi-cultural city like Los Angeles, it's one of the best things about being here. We've got every kind of cuisine imaginable being cooked up by people that have relocated from elsewhere, oftentimes generations ago. They have a proud picture of the owner, Greg Dulan, with then former Vice-President Biden campaigning four years ago at the restaurant alongside pictures of Mr. Dulan's grandparents, and a video that splashed notable women and black Americans and their contributions to culture. Mr. Dulan asked me to tell my friends to visit and herein I hope that I have encouraged you to do so. It's a great meal. He asked me how I'd heard of his restaurant and I told him that I thought all Angelinos knew of Dulan's. If I'm wrong they should. Mr. Dulan also mentioned that yesterday Mayor Karen Bass and soon-to-be Senator Adam Schiff had met there earlier in the day in what I assume was a campaign fundraiser. These are my kind of people.

Yelp
Food . Service . Ambiance ***** This place is amazing. Free valet, too! So you don't have to worry about parking. I had the turkey wings with delicious dressing. I chose the cabbage and okra, corn, tomatoes for my sides. I was pleasantly impressed with all of the flavors and the freshness of the food. The staff was friendly and helpful. The place is clean and freshly renovated. You gotta check this place out!!!!

Yelp
This was our first time at Dulan's on Crenshaw, but I hope that it's not our last. The service was wonderful & each server was very attentive to our needs. The food was delicious & plentiful. My sister is vegetarian & the cashier suggested great side dishes that didn't contain meat when preparing. After we finished our didn't a gentleman graciously walked us to our car, which was up the street & around the corner. He opened & closed each of our doors for us. What great service & attention to detail. I wish that I could remember his name, but I can't, but he knows who he is & I seen him show that am attention to all of the customers. May you all keep up the excellent work & continue to thrive in 2025!

Yelp
Came here with three people at about 5:30 on a Sunday and we were instantly greeted. We had never been here before and he welcomed us and told us how to order and was very kind. We ordered a half smothered chicken and fried fish, for sides we got mashed potatoes, candied yams, Mac n cheese, and collard greens. Everything was fantastic. Our drinks came in massive jars and was such a good value for the cost. The cornbread every meal comes with was nice and warm, and with butter was incredible. The chicken was delicious and juicy. The fish was super crispy and melted in your mouth. The mashed potatoes were super fluffy and the gravy was amazing. The service was super fast and everyone in my party was super satisfied. I couldn't recommend this place more!

Yelp
Greg my man! Ya got down! The redone place on Crenshaw is super nice. The place is open and bright with a cool vibe. The service was fast and the people were friendly. The food - amazing! I've been to several events they catered and always thought the food was way better than in the restaurant. Not anymore. I live close by and this is now by go to spot for soul food. Does not hurt that Greg maybe one of the nicest human beings one would ever meet.
